Remember the Animorphs from the nineties?

I was a big fan, and I recently got the books back from my mom who stored them for me for the last 10 years.

I'm reading them again, and actually enjoying them that doesn't happen often when re-reading books from when I was a kid
This challenge will contain a lot of spoilers, but I doubt there are a lot of nerds here that are reading the series right now, and definitely none that are reading it for the first time :P

A small recap for those who don't know:
The animorphs are a group of 5 teenagers: Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel and Tobias and an alien teenager (an Andalite they call Ax) who are fighting an alien invasion.
The aliens they are fighting are called "Yeerks" and look like slugs. They crawl into your head through your ear and take over your brain. Trapping you in your own body, still seeing, hearing and feeling everything, but unable to move or talk yourself. People with a yeerk in their head are called a Controller.
The animorphs have one weapon: the power to morph. To change into any animal they have 'acquired'. Acquiring means touching them to absorb their DNA, don't ask me how, it's andalite technology that isn't explained much in the books). It does have a downfall though: if they stay in a morph longer than 2 hours, they become trapped and can't change back to their human shape.
To extend the analogy: I have to change my behavior, my thought patterns to fight this battle.

During the challenges in 2017 I plan to bring down my brain weasels, my yeerk so to speak.

The thing inside my head that makes me do things I don't want to. Like eat the entire chocolate bar, skip exercise and makes me feel bad about my body and myself.
To guide me, I have made a roadmap for 2017

I will make new goals every week. Or keep them the same. Just what I think I'll need that week.

Week 0: The Invasion

During this book the Animorphs learn about the yeerk invasion and acuire the ability to morph.

Battle plan this week:
- Read the book EatQ every day for at least 5 minutes
This book is giving me a lot of information about emotional eating and dieting and how to deal with that.

- Do something to battle stress every day
Stress is like candrona rays are to my inner yeerk. It feeds it and keeps it alive.
I can choose between the following options

Spoiler
  • Get a massage
  • Take a bath
  • Read fiction
  • Dance
  • Meditate
  • Listen to music
  • Take a mindful moment
  • Remember: I don't need to be perfect, good enough is what I'm striving for
  • Use the mantra: "Ik ben genoeg, ik doe genoeg, ik heb genoeg" (I am enough, I do enough, I have enough)
  • Controlled breathing
  • Crocheting
  • Watch a show/movie

-When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat
Am I really hungry, or is it just the yeerk talking?
Am I hungry? I go for the most healthy option at that moment
Not hungry? Examine how I feel, Accept this feeling, Find a way to deal with this feeling without food. Like described in my road map

-When I fail at one of my goals this week, I will try to figure out what went wrong, and try to come up with a plan for the next time that I'll be in that situation.
The animorphs fail terribly during their first mission to rescue Jake's brother Thom (who is a controller). Tobias even becomes trapped in his morph. But they learn a lot, and they are still alive. Ready to kick some yeerk butt!

Week 0, day 1

green-anole-lizard-wallpaper-2.jpg

- Read the book EatQ: Done

- Do something to battle stress every day

I watched a tv show, and added some mindful moments throughout the day.

I also tried the pomodoro technique again. I've tried that for a while in the last year, but because of perfectionism I stopped doing that. Now I just went with the flow. My boys don't have school this week so they needed attention throughout the day, and I can't plan that :P So when I got interrupted I just took a mindful moment and gave them my full attention. I let the pomodoro time just run (whether I was on a break or working) and accepted this. And I actually got a lot done today, and I feel very relaxed as well :D

- When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat

I ate when I was hungry. The hard part was stopping when I was full. I tend to overestimate my hunger and put too much on my plate.

-Things to work on
I'm going to put smaller portions on my plate tomorrow, so it will be easier to stop when I'm full.

Week 0, day 2

cute-golde-retriever-happy.jpg

- Read the book EatQ: Done

- Do something to battle stress every day

This morning I had to run some errands and A asked if he could bike himself (well, actually he asked me when he was finally allowed to bike himself when I put him in my bike, and I said: you can bike yourself now. And he started crying that he didn't want to bike. And I told him that he was a big boy who could easily bike himself and kicked him on his bike) So he rode his bike besides me. And since he's only 6 years old and has no clue how to work traffic, I had to work overtime to keep him save. He fell a couple of times too (didn't hurt himself and got right back on his bike). All in all it was a stressful bike ride. The last place we hit was the supermarket, and by that time I was totally stressed out, and bought a bar of chocolate, against better judgement.

When we came home I was hungry and I started to binch. After a few bites I stopped myself, calmed myself down with breathing exercises and made a sandwich (the boys were already eating their sandwiches). After that I wasn't hungry anymore, but I felt still stressed and I REALLY wanted that chocolate. So I put on a tv show and did breathing exercises to calm myself down. I managed for 10 minutes, but then I caved and ate the chocolate until I was nausius :(

The stress was a lot less after that, and completely gone after a fun zumba class :D

- When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat

I was aware I ate the chocolate because I was stressed because of the bike ride. And I worked really hard on alternatives.

But the rest of the day I ate really well. I noticed why I wanted to eat, and acted accordingly. I also took smaller portions, so I didn't overeat.

-Things to work on
I need more ways to deal with feeling stressed. I still haven't taken out my crochet stuff. I'll try to crochet tomorrow when I feel stressed, maybe that will do the trick.

Ugh.  That sounds super stressful.  I've been there too.  I think you did an amazing job following your goals and trying everything to address your stress with something other than chocolate.  The fact that they didn't work is just a reflection on those mechanisms and the level of stress, not on you.  And you went right back to eating well.  Great job!

A stressful situation and being hungry is a tough combination. It was a great achievement to go back to eating well right afterwards :) Could you try walk away from the kitchen for a while? And tell yourself a few times, "Food is not going to fix my stress" or "I deal with my stress by doing some crochet"? Visualize yourself (I'm all about visualization these days haha) walking back to the kitchen, making yourself a portion of food. And then do that.

Another two affirmations that somehow calm me down these days: "I am wanted and loved" and "I am enough". You don't need the food to take you to somewhere better, you're already there. Stay strong, sister <3

Week 0, day 3

fQYSUbVfts-T7pS2VP2wnKyN8wxywmXtY0-Fwsgx

- Read the book EatQ: Done

- Do something to battle stress every day

I've finally got out my crochet stuff! The boys saw the knitting needles that where in the same box and asked me to teach them how to knit. Because, how hard could it be? Well, very hard for two boys who can't tie their own shoe laces yet :P:D

The crocheting is fun, I started on an arugami alien. Seemed appropriate with this challenge theme.

- When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat

At the end of the day I suddenly felt like eating stuff that's not healthy. Like cookies and candy bars. So I took a deep breath and examined why: I wasn't stressed, just a little tired, but nothing extreme. And than it hit me: I was angry. At myself. For not getting stuff done around the house that I wanted to have done.

We had been out of the house a lot today (play morning at the mommy's club, library in the afternoon). And the knitting adventure with the boys had taken some time too.

When I realized the reason behind me wanting to eat, I thought I was being very silly. I reminded myself of all the things that I had done today, and told myself I had spend my time well. The cravings got a lot less and thereby manageable.

-Things to work on
I'm at the part of the EatQ book where techniques are offered to help get your eating habits in check. One of the techniques was: take 5 bites of your food, pauze and check your hunger level, if you are still hungry eat an other 5 bites and so on, until you're satisfied (not full!). I tried this one at dinner, and I think this is a keeper. I've got the feeling I actually ate less :)

Weird, my snacking monster also came out tonight and I wasn't really sure why. i figured it's because I am cold but actually it is probably for the same reasons as you did - I had a similar day and there is lots of stuff I wanted to get done but didn't. Thanks for helping me get clarity on this! It's the Doodlie Hive Mind at play again ;)

Well done on a day spent well - teaching your boys new skills is never a waste of time. It's good they're interested in knitting, it's a hobby that could be a great creative outlet for them and it's handy too because why buy a jumper when you can make it yourself?!

- Read the book EatQ: I finished it! I'm changing this goal to: "Write something you learned from the EatQ book here."

- Do something to battle stress every day

I messed up the front of the alien's head :P  But crochetting is still fun and relaxing.

I also made it to zumba this morning. All the fun people where there and the dancing was a lot of fun! At the end of the lesson I was beat, but I still felt good. And then the instructor asked us: "Can you bring it one more time?" Two of the 20 people there said yes, and the other 18 grunted (including me). And that last song broke me. I was so tired the rest of the day. It was a good tired though :)

- When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat

After zumba I'm always extremely hungry. That is usually the moment that I eat stuff that's not good for me, even after I had my lunch. So today I made a big lunch. I got myself the Gilmore Girls cookbook two weeks back, and one of the recipes is for a tuna melt. I tried it and it was so delicious. I put a little less cheese on them, and a lot of tuna so it was a protein filled lunch and I didn't feel the need to snack afterwards.

Because I was tired I still felt the need to snack on not so healthy stuff, but I kept it to a minimum. All in all a good day :)

Week 0, day 5

horse-running.jpg

- Do something to battle stress every day

tl;dr stressful day ended in the munchies, despite my efforts to deal with the stress otherwise

This morning I had to run the mommy's cafe. I had done this before, but there is always a little bit of tension. I woke up late. 8:45 late. I had to leave at 9 am. So I had to get dressed, eat breakfast, make sure the boys were dressed and had their teeth brushed in 15 minutes. I managed to do it in 20. After that I rode my  bike as fast as I could, and I was there in time. Afterwards I calmed down by making an elaborate lunch for me and the boys: the american pancakes from the gilmore girls cookbook (or the 'African pancakes' as A calls them :D ). The cooking took away most of the stress, and the bit that remained was manageable and I didn't overeat.

In the afternoon I had to do the weekly grocery shopping. The supermarket was crowded and off course I had to take the boys with me (they'll be back in school next week). A is super proud that he can read now, so he was reading EVERYTHING. Preferably in the middle of an overcrowded isle. I had put J in the cart seat, and he was using the scanner as a microphone. Which was very cute, but a bit impractical :P

And they wanted to take everything they thought was yummy. Like cookies, pudding and ice cream. The positive side of this is that I didn't take any of that stuff with us, because I didn't want to give in to the whining :)

After the shopping trip I just layed down on the couch for a while doing nothing. When most of the stress had subsided I suddenly got the munchies. I knew it was because of the stress and I put on a light netflix show. It didn't help and I gave in. It wasn't too bad, but I could have done better.

And after dinner I crocheted a little.

- When I want to eat I examine why I want to eat

Because of the stress I didn't always go for the healthiest option. But I did know why I wanted to eat.

-Things to work on
I need to prepare food for stressful times. So I won't go for the unhealthy options so fast.

I've bought trail mix and yogurt today, that'll help. I'm going to dive into food prep after this weekend.
