Darkfoxx 33: Fresh New Year; Building Upon Solid Goals

Holla, 2017

2016 was a weird year. (in part because of the support I gained from all you lovely Rebels), I hit the eject button have had a complete life change in the last 365 days.

in 2016 I

  • Quit my comfortable but unfulfilling job in marketing/design/copywriting
  • Took a 3-month immersive bootcamp to learn the skills necessary to transition into a career in web development
  • Have since undergone the most grueling job hunt I have ever had - including the rough post-college hunt
  • Have gone from on top of my macros game to completely letting that fall by the wayside due to school stress to having dug my way out of the hole I created
  • Have monkeyed with said metrics to transition from paleo to keto (and am still playing around with them for optimization)
  • Have gone from a 5x a week workout schedule to nothing at all during school and a whole host of body crapiness that ensued, to kiiiiinda digging my way back out of that hole
  • Started (assistant) teaching front-end web development at my alma mater
  • Have shattered my comfort zone through: leaving the house (I used to work from home and am a natural hermit), going to a school every damn day with humans in it, forcing myself to attend networking events upon networking events, forcing myself on job interview after job interview, and now putting myself out there as someone who knows enough of what they are doing to be able to teach other humans
  • Have worked really damn hard on not being quite so hyper critical of myself and my abilities in an effort to stay sane during this job hunt
  • Have worked really hard on reaching out to my Nerds for support when I've fallen down on that last one
  • Went to CAAAAAMP and met some of my Internet Friends IRL - with Hugs! And got to tell the NF team in person just how damn much this community means to me - through that, I practiced a whoooooole lot of gratitude in a short amount of time
  • And that's it?

Up for 2017

  • Get a damn job that involves trading services for actual money
  • Minimalize the shit out of my stuff in prep for a move in late February/early March
  • Continue on with yoga - I've got 9 classes of hot yoga that need booking before the move!
  • Aim to add deadlifts & rings into my schedule with the new gym (providing that *is* the new gym - it has barbells and a spot to hang rings)
  • Explore the new neighborhood - wherever it is
  • Work on slooooooowly re-incorporating rucking into my rotation (of course there will be videos) - slowly so I don't roach my shoulder yet again
  • Continually work on my self-criticalness -- especially during the remaining (and hopefully waning) parts of this job hunt
  • Find ways to actively work on cultivating and improving my IRL relationships (Internet ones, too, but that's much easier)
  • Continue to build a presence in the NYC tech community
  • Find more ways to mentor and/or teach since that is a great way to rip the last of my comfort zone out from under myself
  • Travel asap
  • Keep learning in some fashion
  • Keep practicing

This Challenge Cycle

My goals will look familiar. I'm operating yet again under 'no damn free time in the evenings' protocols, so I'm rolling with the punches comfort v schedule-wise.

Goal 1: Work Out

Yoga classes 2x a week

Something else 1x a week - this can be either a quick Darebee bodyweight workout in the kitchen while doing job stuff, a supplemental video yoga class, or - lord forbid - an HIIT video in the gym. Maybe throw in a ruck if it's not too freezing and my shoulder isn't cranky.

Goal 2: Macros

Track macros. Stick with keto. Play with fat ratios. All tracking will be done on my Spreadsheet of Keto Awesomeness and involves doughnut charts.

Goal 3: Get A Job

Continue to apply for 10 - 15 jobs a week

Attend networking events as time allows

Find and work on side projects - on the list: continuing a 30-day vanilla JavaScript course, picking up PHP, working on SVG animations, building some pure layout sites using various shiny new technologies (either ways of approaching responsiveness, load time or accessibility), working on some pure layout designs that have really tricky elements because they are beautiful, and working on some great full-workup UI sites for business just because.

I will also look into picking up some sort of side hustle to generate some supplemental income.

Goal 4: Other Life Shit

Here is where I will work on all those other goals - starting with minimalism. Dog pics forthcoming.

Goal 1: Work Out

Nooooope.

Goal 2: Macros

KETO FAIL.

I was doing so well all day ... and then I held office hours at a tea shop and made poor life choices.

I stupidly ordered an Earl Grey Chai Latte with almond milk - completely forgetting that all chai shit in public is syrup. Ooooooops.

And I didn't want to throw away a $5 drink, so I sat there and drank my cup of diabetes while waiting for students to come - no one came, but at least I got to chat with my stepmom.

Mebbe that is why my head feels like someone is trying to pick the muscles of my temple up and squeeze them.

That, and my sinuses are full + I was so dried out last night that it feels like I'm being throttled slowly.

#goodtimes

Goal 3: Get A Job

Pinged my one outstanding application, cleaned my job tracking Trello board, identified a few jobs to apply to this week.

Goal 4: Minimize

No work here - was enjoying a clean house for one more day.

I did, however, get a bunch of bulk cooking done. Made buttery cauliflower rice pilaf, a sesame Brussels dish & a peanut butter-less smoothie to cut those carbs.

Yesterday

Goal 1: Work Out

Oof. I felt like pooooooop all day. My skeleton hurt (especially my spine), my sinuses were going crazy, and my throat felt all swollen and dry.

I'm thinking some sort of perfect storm - too much sugar the evening before, the air is too dry (despite the rain) and I have not yet purchased this year's humidifier, working on the big computer always hurts my back, and I'm probably coming down with something on top of all that drama.

I got some work done while laying in bed, took a nap, and dragged my Ass to school.

No workout

Goal 2: Macros

Calories: 1229.75

56.0% fat

31.1% protein

12.8% carbs

Needed more fat

Breakfast: No peanut butter smoothie + coffee

Lunch: Rotisserie chicken & sesame Brussels

Dinner: NuGo Slim bar + mixed nuts while in class

Goal 3: Get A Job

Scheduled 2 phone screens; initial phase of setting up an in-person with the one remaining prospect from before the holidays.

Worked on click-throughs.

Tutored a student before class and spoke to a former classmate who is now assistant teaching the immersive course.

Followed up on an application I put in last week.

That dog could not be bothered to be in today's picture.

97e8b495d6bd1d029996f5139be0984a.jpg

I think my stuffy sinuses, general restlessness, and sneeziness offended him last night - I woke up this morning to an empty bed. I never get to sleep in an empty bed. He was also giving me stink face from his "office" (bed under my desk).

Jerk.

Yesterday

Goal 1: Work Out

Again, no. Still felt kind of like poo, but had an all-day meeting and class at night.

Goal 2: Macros

Didn't track but did manage to eat Keto, despite going to a Japanese bakery cafe for lunch and my favorite hot bar for dinner. Didn't get enough fat, I'm sure.

Goal 3: Get A Job

Spoke to a recruiter briefly.

Had long meeting with free company where we saw how far out of the hole the Bangladeshi team can dig us. It's seemingly far.

We shall see.

Class was a little better for the students tonight - I spent a lot of time as cheerleader telling students they weren't stupid or alone in feeling so. We mostly reviewed floats and worked on a lab. We shall see how traumatic homework is for everyone this week.

Yesterday

Goal 1: Work Out

Nope - didn't stop going all day

Goal 2: Macros

Didn't track but was probably fine.

Smoothie + coffee for breakfast

Bunless boar & pickled tomato burger with Brussels slaw for lunch

Low carb blueberry bar + coffee for dinner

Habanero nuts for a snack

Peanut butter fat bomb for another snack

Goal 3: Get A Job

Argued with someone at the free job - held my ground when he stood up & started yelling. It may not have been productive to yell, but dammit I won't be intimidated.

And then we calmed down and got work done.

Have an in-person 90% scheduled for next week and a code challenge to complete this weekend, despite my throat being so swollen I'm squeaky.

Goal 4: Minimize

Was not home all day; no minimization.

I did, however, trek out to the probable new place to take pictures. We will most likely be putting a deposit down this week. Looks like we'll be on the first floor with a garden courtyard view - the water views have been scooped up. Boo, but we get crazy high ceilings in exchange.

Reference: it took me an hour/hour and a half to get from midtown to the place via 2 trains & the ferry. Half an hour of that was spent waiting on the ferry departure time.

@Sloth the Enduring: I do find the yelling kind of hilarious in hindsight.

Background: The other party is old enough to have attended EST (a notorious 70s self-help movement) in his 20s, and makes a living being an authority from talking (he's a career coach).

I am quite used to fighting for what I believe to be true, have zero patience with someone espousing opinions for the sake of opinions (or just wrong opinions in general), and don't do all I can to ensure he is mollified (one of my next personal growth projects will be to figure out how to temper aggression with finesse on a consistent basis and with personalities I usually clash with).

I find his (most likely) use of subtle aggression (posture and leaning forward + getting louder and emotional) interesting given the whole picture - and my own subconscious reaction of matching tone and physically standing up to meet the threat an interesting case study in interpersonal power dynamics.

Needless to say, it's a good thing the other principal is even-tempered.

Yesterday

Spent most of the day cuddling the dog and trying to sleep off the crud.

Still squeaky, lots of snot, and all the air is too dry. I got my new humidifier - and it's pretty, but not immediately making my house humid. Which I remember from last year -- it took a few days with the last one we had to get the air livable.

I made chia seed + coconut milk pudding base and ate 2/3 of the batch with peanut butter mixed in for breakfast/lunch, had bone broth instead of coffee in the morning, ate cauliflower pilaf + ground beef for dinner, and had spicy nuts as a snack.

No cleaning or minimizing.

I worked on the code challenge for a few hours and will work some more today.

We also put the application in for the new place - all that's left is to sign the lease. Not sure if we do that before move-in or no. Move-in is scheduled for Feb 29.

Maybe it's like prison, you have to fight your first day there so everyone knows you're not a pushover and they can't have all your cigarettes.
