Asa Pond - Takes the Assassin's Pledge

Asa Pond

Recommended Posts

I'm taking a note out of @Jonesy's and @RogueLibrarian's pages and trying something new.

Asa Pond takes on the mantle of an Assassin

Assassins protect the innocent, fight the evil, and carve out a better future in the world. They do this in many ways - for me it will be:

1) Save the citizens:

giphy.gif

I signed up for a month of unlimited Krav Maga classes (paid already and everything). I should probably use them.

Attend at least 2 classes per week of Krav Maga (starting January 15).

Mission: Save 2 citizens per week (20 pts each - unlimited pts possible, 100 min)

2) Climbing buildings to escape enemies:

assacreed2_b07_380.jpg

One of the reasons I joined my current gym (other than getting recruited by the Kingsman) was because there is a huge climbing wall there. I have yet to use it and that needs to change.

1 Climbing session a week

Mission: Avoid 1 enemy soldier per week (10 pts each - 50 pts min).

3) Eavesdropping

Related image

I need to step up my language game - otherwise how am I going to know what my targets are saying.

2 hours per week of serious language study.

Mission: Spend at least 2 hours per week eavesdropping on enemy plans (5 pts per hour - 50 pts min).

4) Collect Flags

Related image

Other goals I have that are optional but important (2 pts each, 40 pts min):

  • Spend 1 full hour cleaning X
  • Spend 1 full hour studying X
  • Get in a volunteering application.
  • Read a full, real book (audible doesn't count) XX
  • Spend time with a friend.
  • Spend time learning something new X
  • Change Bank Account
  • Schedule an important appointment XXX
  • 1 Session of yoga OR 1 cumulative hour of stretching XX
  • other type of workout (not climbing or Krav Maga) XXXXXXXXXX
  • Cancel Old Gym Membership
  • Take measurements and record for Team Havik
  • Unpack and put away clothes from the holidays
  • Grocery Shopping XXX
  • Meal Prep XX
  • Return Rented Violin
  • Go to Book Club on the 18th
  • *TBD*

Thanks!! I think I'm going to like it.

French and maybe beginning Russian. I took 4 years of French at University but really need to brush up. Russian is because a coworker gave me a beginner course he had and it seems fun (and might be relevant some time soon).

Assassin's Creed, you say? I feel like maybe I've heard of this somewhere. I look forward to learning more about this thing you mention.

CLIMBING! It's so much fun. It's SO much fun. It will make you feel like an Assassin.

I thought you might have heard of it before but I wasn't sure. It's pretty cool, ya know - parkour murder kind of stuff.

CLIMBING IS FUN. But I get anxiety walking in there for some reason so I have avoided it but NO LONGER. What kind of shoes do you climb with? I know there are climbing shoes but I don't really want to make that investment if it isn't necessary.

YAY Volunteering!

Parkour AND murder? In one package? Surely not.

I wear ... the kind that they rent me for free at my work gym. You know, that brand?  :) I keep meaning to buy my own, but I do it sporadically and haven't justified the cost to myself yet.

I was intimidated getting started. It was a whole new thing and I kept shying away from it. Finally I went in and said, "Hey, I've been wanting to try this and I never have. Can you show me how?" and it was great. I want to hear all about it.

Hey hey, those are the languages I speak! Russian is a lot like working out and leveling up: sometimes fun, sometimes a giant PITA, but has a real sense of accomplishment once you realize how far you've come. На здоровье!

I told Pond this already, but I'm very interested in hearing about RH as it progresses. I've decided it's just too expensive for me to justify, as much as I love NF and want to support it, but if it's getting universal raves from my friends in a couple months I'd look hard at it again.

IN FOR POND.

I'm curious to see how the RH works - I wonder if it will be a lot like some of the amazing minis that the Assassin's guild has put on over the last few years? but, right now, it is too rich for me. we are buckling down for a period of strict budget adherence.

Oooh climbing and languages! Love it!

If you decide that you like climbing (which you will because climbing is so much fun! :D) then shoes are absolutely the first thing you should get. Climbing shoes make a huuuuge difference, and rental shoes are plain awful (and rental gets expensive anyway). With good shoes you'll be able to trust your feet a lot more which is super important in developing good technique. But there's no need to get fancy expensive shoes to begin with, the important thing is that they fit well.

Do you have a specific brand recommendation for a first pair of climbing shoes? I should probably buy my own pair at some point too.

Not really, I honestly think that all brand will be decent enough for a first pair. Then it becomes more a question of preference and what kind of climbing you do. If you go to a decent store they'll be able to help you out. But really just having a shoe with fresh rubber and clean edges makes a huge difference. The import thing is really to get a good fit so try on as many as possible. They should be very very snug, if they're comfortable they're almost certainly too big.:) But they shouldn't poke or hurt either, if they're so tight it hurts to stand on them it completely defeats their purpose. The store should have a few foot holds to stand on, definitely have a play on that to see how the shoes feel!

Yay! :)

For my gym - I think they let us climb in regular old running shoes? Is that a thing and will it get me through a few climbs at first? I know I like climbing but I don't have a lot of extra cash hanging around (lol climbing pun) at the mo' so don't want to invest before I know I will stick with it.

*ETA - nope I lied, they rent us shoes for free. Below question now applies even more to me as well!

And this is why I don't own any yet -- I need to go to an actual store instead of just picking them off Amazon.

And I seem to wear a different size in climbing shoes than I do in other shoes. I don't know if that's common.

That's great! They still suck, but nowhere near as much as running shoes, and it won't make such a big difference in the beginning anyway. As the holds get smaller and the movements more complex you'll start to notice it more and more.

Very common! Not only that people even squeeze their feet into shoes a few sizes too small on purpose. Ouch! But yeah unfortunately it really makes trying them on necessary. :)
