Aces back for first challenge of 2017

Okay, I'm back for a new challenge and will be active on NF when I can. 2016 was a busy year and I made real progress with my fitness program. I'm looking to take that even further this year. I did start a new job last month that will take a lot of my time. So my ability to post here will be somewhat limited, however, I want to stay involved here as I can.

Goals for this challenge:

1) Back to regular workouts of 4 times per week. I was doing this consistently until the time I started my new job. The first month was spent in training for my new position and my workout schedule suffered.

2) Coordinate my weekly workouts with my personal training sessions. I've spoken with my trainer and he is going to provide me with weekly workouts that will complement what he and I do together. I'm paying him extra for this service and know it will be worth it. I've been pretty good about what I do in the gym by myself, but a little more structure will certainly be helpful.

3) Cut out the sweets again. This is not really a huge problem for me, however, I did let more sugar into the diet during the holidays.

I will try to make these a bit more specific as the challenge progresses. I know from recent experience that if I don't keep this simple, I won't log any progress at all.

One more note. I watched The Barkley Marathons on netflix last night and found it very inspiring. It has caused me to give some thought to something I can do this year to really push myself. I'm not sure what it will be yet, but am going to find some event that I can compete in to really test limits. I can't recommend this documentary enough. Check it out. http://barkleymovie.com/

I want to be in the habit of posting so will make quick posts when I can. Yesterday was a crazy day at work. That will be the new normal, I can tell. However, I did hold myself accountable and went to the gym. Only had time for a quick one - Rowing 400m x4 and treadmill for 30 mins. Also a little stretching. Today I see my trainer so will be a heavy lifting day. Also will follow up with him about my workout plan.

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.

I've had a pretty good week, although my trainer went a little nuts with the deadlifting on Wednesday. It was a heavy night and my back was really tight yesterday. Feeling fine today though. Made it to the gym and did some yoga and a little on the treadmill.

Nice simple goals and you are posting more!  Yeah!  I am,taking, after your example and booked some personal training time myself.  I think it will be way worth the money.  I may pick your brain though just to see if my guy is up to snuff.

Great weekend here, filled with mainly fun stuff with the family. My alma mater played a men's basketball game in Chicago on Saturday and it was a good game. They won, so that helped. :-)

Yesterday was a family Catan tournament. That was a good time and the day flew by. Now it's back to work already.

No lifting and my back is completely back to normal. I have three sessions scheduled to lift this week. Will get one more session in as well for mobility and cardio.

I did lift on Monday afternoon. Today is a day with the trainer. He sent me this video and I think it's great and wanted to share it here with you all.

Really great session with the trainer on Wednesday this week. We are working on deadlift technique and it's frustrating, but also a good move. Frustrating because felt like my work weight was a lot lower than usual. However, I know that it's a good choice in the long run. I should have time to check in more later today!

Week one recap:

1) I went to the gym three times last week and had three great workouts. Friday afternoon was one of the best trips I've made to the Y in some time. I was focused and accomplished everything I went in to do. My goal is four per week, so today can still manage to do some yoga/mobility at home.

2) My trainer is working on my lifting schedule for me. I expect to get that sometime this week and be able to implement right away. Progress is being made here!

3) Sweets - okay, I'm still not back to my limited pre-holiday intake. I don't eat a lot of sugar, but there definitely has been some every day. In the grand scheme of things, not a huge issue. I just want to be aware of my choices.

Week two should be good. I've already got my workouts scheduled in my calendar. I'm doing some meal prep right now and my workout bag is already packed for tomorrow.

One other update from the week.

A number of years ago, I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea. I exhibited all the classic symptoms, did a couple of sleep studies and struggled with using the CPAP machine at night. The last time I had a follow up appointment with the specialist, he indicated that due to my weight loss my apnea could be described as mild and he believed there could be a time when I would have the choice whether or not to continue treatment. Mainly he suggested I get my weight down about 10 more pounds. That was in the summer of 2015.

Due to some changes in health insurance, I was unable to go for a follow up until last week. The first thing the doctor said to me was, "you look great." I've shed another 8 pounds since I last saw him and have been able to keep it off. After our conversation he effectively released me from care. Should I feel the need for a follow up, I can of course book one.

When I was first diagnosed in 2008, I weighed about 230 and was definitely not healthy. At that time, I lost about 20 pounds simply by changing my diet. I always made promises to myself that I would drop another 20 pounds, but was never able to follow through on those promises. It wasn't until joining NF in 2014 that I became more serious and committed to change. I'm now below 190 for the first time in years. Maybe 20 years. I look and feel so much better. I'm also sleeping better and don't need to bother with that stupid machine any longer.

This feels like a major win.

Thanks! I forget sometimes to celebrate progress that has been made. Choosing instead to focus on what still needs to be accomplished.

Week two recap:

Work out on Monday afternoon. Also a training session on Wednesday and picked up a bonus session on Friday. Both of which were fantastic! He should have my workout plan completed shortly. Yesterday went to a great yoga class with a friend of mine. It has been some time since I've taken a class so wasn't sure how it would go. It was not a beginner class and the level ended up being great for where I am. I was able to keep up mainly due to my past yoga experience coupled with the strength I've gained from my workouts lately. I am going to add yoga into my routine now. It reminded me how much I like it.

Food choices were a little goofy this week, but not horrible. I'm definitely cutting down on my sugar intake. Next challenge, maybe a little caffeine reduction. It's not too bad, but could be looked at I'm sure.

I should have some time to peruse the other threads that I follow. Well, before the football games start, anyway! Hope everyone is having a great day!
