Ok, now that I've completed OPERATION STOBAL, I'm ready to start focusing on one main goal/habit per challenge. We have 10 challenges this year, so that's TEN awesome new habits I can build into my life.

This month, I'm going to focus on walking 16 miles/week. I used to do that as a main challenge goal, and I eventually stopped tracking it once it became a habit. I still walk regularly, but over time my mileage has gone down. I think walking is a foundational habit that supports everything else, so I want to reestablish a good walking base.

  • I'm debating whether I want to count running mileage towards the distance goal or not. Thoughts?
  • I'll be travelling for a work conference on 1/9-1/13 (and probably networking into the evening ugh) so that week's overall mileage may be lower and that's ok.

Other things for January:

  • Continue Headspace meditation streak (2 months to go for that 365 day achievement!)
  • Sign up for a weekly yoga class on Wednesday nights (this will free up some mental space so I don't have to worry about squeezing in yoga throughout the week and can do other mobility stuff on mornings/evenings)
  • Continue 2 runs per week, building them up towards 5K each and getting used to running in the snow
  • Continue 3 workouts/week
  • Instead of my annual "frugal February" this year I think I'm going to do a 3 month shopping ban from Jan-March

Shopping ban details:

Spoiler

Don't spend money on buying things or eating out. I miiiiight make a once/month eating out exception, but I haven't decided yet.

Exceptions:

  • Experiences ok - yoga classes, travel, etc.
  • Ok to eat out socially
  • Birthday presents for my sister and a friend in February
  • Any athletic gear that I genuinely need going into the Winter Spartan in March
  • We're getting weapons in Aikido so I'm precommitted to paying for those
  • Toiletries, etc. only if I run out of what I have
  • Replacing something that's broken (not anticipated)

I'm currently still on Pacific Time so I'm going to be easing myself back onto Eastern Standard Time this week. Plus, I'm in my usual post-vacation funk where I feel really lonely with fewer friends around. So, I'll be a bit forgiving with myself about morning routines and workout intensity as I get back into the swing of things (but I will still work out).

Let's do an icebreaker! Nobody I know in real life will admit to having a new years resolution, which is so boring! I'm not a big resolution person myself, but I always have some sort of goals going on, and I love to hear about what other people are working on. My 2017 resolution is to have a friggin' dining table before the end of the year. I live in a studio with no room for one currently, so that will either involve moving or a serious change of furnishing. What about you guys?

My resolution is to be more resolute. I spent 2016 being wishy washy and I got bugger all done. I have forgotten how to see things through and this is going to change in 2017.

I say count it. It's all about covering distance on foot, right? There's no real difference between walking and running other than speed and stamina. :)

I want to get down to 59 kgs by Jan 2018. I tried to lose the weight for the better part of last year, but allowed myself too much junk and didn't get off my rear end enough. Not this year. This year there will be no excuses. I WILL lose these 7-8 kgs.

Replying now so I'm subscribed and will be back with a resolution later. I've been focused on shorter term goals and not thought about bigger stuff. Thanks for making me realize that.

My resolution is to have a daily fitness habit by the end of the year. That means walking daily and at least one other thing, but probably two other things since I plan to do 10-15 minutes of joint mobility in the morning, so the third thing would happen during afternoon/evening. I'm actually calling 2017 "The Year of Fitness".

Hokay. Hastily thought-up but still highly relevant resolution is to be more social/meet new people. Might be tough this semester, but overall this year I need to make new friends, date people, and do adult things like join organizations or volunteer somewhere to build my network and pad my resume and whatever other adulty jargony things. So apparently this will be the year I stop trying to become one with my couch.

My 2017 Roadmap is essentially my resolutions for the year.  But if I had to sum up it would be something like this:

Find more time for family fun, flee from fat, foster food and fiscal frugality, and figure how to frequently get forty winks.

This is great! 10 awesome habits can really get you a long way!

I honestly don't have any new years resolutions. I mean I have a looong list of things I'd like to learn and do but it's not time framed in any way. But I'm going to think about what 10 awesome habits I'd like to include this year. :)

Following. I've been batting back and forth a few resolutions. One for sure is "listen to more music".  I get a bit overstimulated so I'm working on it.

I want to really work on getting strong and doing a lot of lifting this year and improving the quality of my diet but I hesitate to make them resolutions because I'm complicated that way and it backfires sometimes.

I would actually love a dining table. No joke.

Buuuut... My resolution is to have moved by the end of the year. By the end of June, really, but there are so many things to work out.

Week 0 Day 2? Update

I did some yoga for the first time in a bajillion years. I'm planning to try to get into that yoga class starting tomorrow (as far as I can determine, I just show up with registration information and money to sign up during the first class??) and I'm very stiff from vacation / neglecting yoga, so I want to try to limber up a little before I go. I also dragged myself out on a walk even though it was raining lightly, since walking is my goal and all.

Eating was bad today. I'm still a jetlagged zombie and I'm not very functional yet. I was supposed to work out, but I finished watching Season 1 of The Magicians and neglected all adulting instead. I'll get to it.

Other Stuff

I read this article that goes around periodically again today. It asks "how do you choose to suffer?" We have to struggle to achieve our goals. Struggle is inevitable. But we can choose which goals are important to us, and we can choose HOW we struggle. The way we're willing to struggle determines which goals we'll achieve.

So. Things I know: I'm willing to be sore from working out. I'm willing to do the same exercises over and over even when they're boring or I don't see progress, because I know it works over time. I'm willing to stay up for an extra 15 minutes to meditate, or to slightly embarrass myself by admitting that I'm going to step aside to meditate when I'm visiting with friends.

I'm working on other areas. I'm not totally there yet. I WANT to be willing to feel the longing for something like a new sweater or a pair of running shoes that will make me feel good, and to let that longing go unfulfilled because there are more important things for me to direct my money towards. I want to feel the urge to eat something carby that reminds me of being home with my family but let that urge go unfulfilled to protect my health. I want to be willing to work through awkwardness to bond with other people better. I want to be willing to set aside the urge to procrastinate and suffer through mundane tasks at work so that my career advances and lets me work with more engaged people. But am I ACTUALLY willing to suffer in each of these ways? I'm not sure. Maybe as I look at habits in the coming challenges, I'll also take time to consider how to adjust my mindset to be willing to take on each of these different kinds of suffering.

2017 Resolutions:

1) Declutter the house. If I clean out something, big or small, every weekend then by the end of the year I might have a half-way uncluttered house (I fully realize this will probably take at least two or three passes to really get junk-free).

2) Run the Warrior Dash in September. Which by extension means dropping a whole hell of a lot of weight, building stamina (since I currently have, like, none) and strength (not too bad for an obese middle-aged lady, but still LOTS of room for improvement).

3) Do something arty that requires little investment in materials. I took up crocheting in the first week of December because I thought it would be fun to make scarves for my parents for Christmas. It still is ... i should be done in a couple of weeks.  Next, I'll try drawing - that has been something in the back of my mind for a very long time. I'm particularly interested in fantasy cartography.

I'll read the article in the next day or so and come back with anything I learn from it. It sounds like a self-reflection thing that fits me perfectly.

Week 0 Day 3 Update

  • Went walking at lunchtime. The ground was icy, but the temperature was nice. I picked my way along the ground veeeeerry carefully at parts. I may or may not have trespassed to get to a Pokéstop. Also I forgot to turn on my pedometer but the built in one seems to think it was about 2.7 miles, so let's go with that.
  • I went to that yoga class! It was an excellent choice. It was just a little bit challenging, which is right where I want it to be. And I could keep up with a lot of the yoga terms and instructions without looking at the instructor too much, so that made me feel pretty good. ALSO I managed to put my hair in a topknot that actually stayed on my head the whole time, so I felt like a cool yoga lady. I'm registered for 7 more weeks, so this should work out well.

I need to write out my goals for this year properly, but basically:

• Train for and run lots of OCRs this year (maybe 5-6)

• Re-address my work/life balance - that article you linked has given me some food for thought here; thank you!

• Get out of debt and start building some savings

Glad you enjoyed your new yoga class, and that you are indeed continuing to be awesome!
