yo dudes, I am gaining weight again. I mean, I'm still down from my start weight! but, over the last two months I definitely gained a bit.

But that's ok, because I am UNSTOPPABLE in the sense that I literally perhaps do not know how to stop.

So I am going to UNSTOPPABLY STOP this weight gain.

I BELIEVE!

 

MAIN QUEST

LOSE FAT. This could be signified by either losing weight, or using fancy schmancy tracking tools (wifi scale, skulpt device, measurements, photos) to double check.

 

In an effort to be more scientific-like, I went back to where my weight dropped again -- last July I tracked a bunch of actual data, and then the August Challenge I tried to put it into effect, with an outcome of some loss.

SO what did I do right in August 2016, and how can I keep it up? Well, upon review, I learned that I didn't actually identify any challenge goals in August 2016. I ate less, and I ran a BUNCH. After reviewing July's challenge, I have a hypothesis that I didn't exercise as much as I should for my food intake over the last couple of months, which is contributing to GAINING. I had data for this hypothesis in July, and the hypothesis mildly substantiated with no actual data because literally I did not exercise at all in November and December.

you guys did you know I have a stack of paper notes from many of my old challenges? I'm missing some from the beginning, like, 11/2013-11/2014, but it's cool to have them around - even though they don't have much usable information noted.

Goal 1: Exercise More / Don't Break The Chain

I need to do something every day. Running, TKD, going to the gym and doing weights, SOMETHING.

If I can't do a formal thing exercise for at least 30 minutes (20 if it's running, plus a cool down at the end), these are my options for not breaking the chain:

* do at least 5 sets of 100 jumping jacks

* go for a real 30 minute walk. Poke-walking counts. just WALK.

* hula hoop practice for at least 15 minutes.

* other things that are like these things that will be good for me.

(HEY trying to do some kind of bullet journal planner is ALSO a thing that I am experimenting with and I DO NOT FEAR FAILURE)

Goal 2: Eat Less / Eat Better

STICK WITH THE PLAN, STAN.

my loseit plan is still set at losing 1 lb a week, which is a 500 calorie / day deficit over where it thinks I actually am.

ALSO I am going to start logging half and half in coffee / milk in tea. DIRTY SECRET I never logged that. I did decrease my budget by 75 cal to accommodate but the more coffees I drink in a day, the less close I am to that being reality.

 

"LUCKILY," I am also embarking on a version of "no spend january" this month. My husband is going back to school full time and I am the only breadwinner right now. Funds are tight - we have an expensive mortgage. So, I gave myself a few passes for eating out, but mostly, I will be bringing my lunches to work. which means I can EAT BETTER with no problems.

 

Other considerations: DO NOT eat back exercise calories unless I've burned like 1000 exercise calories (i.e., dojo sat.)

Goal 3: Put the NERD back in NERD FITNESS.

Use the tools! Track food, daily weigh, dust off my nutty excel spreadsheet and fill in the last few challenges.

ALSO

weekly photos

weekly measurements

weekly or MORE skulpt readings. it's annoying but the more I do it, the faster I am at doing it.

and most importantly!

USE THIS TOOL! the forums are like my A+ Number 1 tool for success, USE THEM. DUDE. Check in every day. Say hi. update log. YOU CAN DO IT.

I should have just stolen your goals. :)  I'm here for that daily motivation bump.  Like you, I need to get back into the habit of doing at least something every day.

I've been having a rough time over the last few months - so busy, and it was easy to not prioritize me! (well, in some cases I really couldn't prioritize me. but, details.) coming here is important to me. :)

I just today went over to Lose It to see if a change of scenery would help inspire the food tracking business.  (And I recall more than once, saying I like your data when you share it.)  I just got an email that they have a sale on premium.   Do you find it worth the money spent?

I do! I am not sure what they are charging these days, I am such a long-time user that it's something like $15 a year for me and it's absolutely worth it. I feel like the databases are pretty robust, the mobile / app interface is clean and easy to use, and I find it to be intuitive to add recipes or manually add foods to the database. I really only use it for the tracking (there are forums and challenges too), but it pulls in my weight from my wifi scale to recalc my daily calorie goal and my fitbit adjustments automatically to update my daily burn. I've been happy with it. that said, I haven't used any of the other tools that are out there, so I have no comparison points.

So the hobonichi techo is a japanese planner with a kind of cult following? (review: http://www.thefinerpoint.net/blog//10-months-in-with-the-hobonichi-techo-final-thoughts) it's got this amazing tomoe river paper that is so thin, and so smooth with fountain pens. it's really popular as an art journal (http://hobonichilove.tumblr.com/) because it's got daily planner pages... I'm NOT a great artist, nor a great journaller, but I'd been staring at this thing for like, 2 years, and I finally ordered one in November. I'm glad I did because it was a totally extravagant thing that I wasn't sure how to use, and now that we are down to one income I have this added emphasis on using it!  I'm trying to do some manner of hybrid memento / bullet journal -- hence the #hobobujo term.

 

I haven't written out the challenge yet but this is my no-spend january page:

in all the GIF DRUNKENNESS I never posted about the gym yesterday.

 

oh week 0 day 1

I went for a long pokewalk with my husband. it was awesome.

 

week 0 day 2

we cleaned out the basement! I wish I had taken a before photo but it was HORRIBLE and to be honest, I was embarrassed of how it looked. I am almost never embarrassed by my shoddy housekeeping! but I was about the basement.

 

we have one of those terrifying basements with rough foundation walls. its a usable space but there wasn't a concrete floor until shortly before my husband bought the house in 2008. it was FILTHY. piles of dirt and soot from an old chimney demo and just the paint from the walls peeling off and spider webs, inches thick in the corners of the room. it had a LOT of stuff from the prior owners in it, and then we chucked a buncha stuff down there too when we moved in. over the last few years we've sorted out 3 of the 4 quadrants of the basement, and this week, we have a dumpster in our driveway from the attic drywalling project, and filled it up with stuff from the last 1/4 of the basement we had just been stacking and shoving stuff into. With this cleaning we have removed all of the prior owners garbage and fully reviewed and chucked all the stuff of ours that was randomly shuffled down there during each of our moves into the house. IT FEELS SO GOOD.

 

cleaning = carrying a bunch of down to the dumpster, then me refusing to stack things in piles of dirt, so moving stuff around, vacuuming, making piles of garbage, and organizing, my husband carrying a million things down to the dumpster.

(some day we will have nice scrubbed, epoxyed, and painted walls, and lots of shelving for all that old wood that we have accumulated. except before then, my husband promises he will make a bunch of stuff out of it.)

 

week 0 day 3

I packed my bag the night before, and we woke up and went to the gym. I did get sidetracked with some morning chores that were NOT AT ALL NECESSARY for me to do! but we still had enough time for some exercising, once there, I ran for 1/2 a mile, stopped and stretched - I think this needs to be a normal thing for me on account of my knees and leg muscles being so tight, and also I have read it's what real runners do. Then I ran for a mile on the treadmill and STOPPED and that was awesome. the stopping I mean. after that - I did 3x10 sets of bw squats, and did floor work by alternating a million bicycles (I did about 100 total) and I think it's shoulder stands (you start lying on your back, do a leg lift and keep going up until you pop your butt off the floor and you are on your shoulders? then lower to a leg lift down back to the mat but don't touch and go back up again? is that a shoulder stand kind of thing? I did a bunch of those too) with pigeons and downward dogs and toe touches and forward bends. 

 

and then I went to the locker room and there was no hot water in the ladies showers and I took the fastest navy shower ever. As a friend of mine who was a seabee in afghanistan says: "any day with water is a good day." BOY WAS IT INVIGORATING THOUGH.
