Seabright's 2017 Battle Log of Awesomeness

Recommended Posts

Sat & Sun Apr 1 & 2

Eating paleo:

  • Breakfast - eggs w/spin, bells and onion and 3 strips bacon
  • Lunch - chicken salad wraps
  • Dinner - chicken teriyaki, egg rolls, lots of chicken and broccoli
  • Snack - apples and a cookie

Daily exercise:

  • On Sunday, went and took a yoga class that involved ropes! So cool. Every part of me stiff and sore the next day, though. Strrrrretched!
  • Walked over 3K steps on both days. Time to update the goal, I think.

Taking time:

  • Garden time putting bubblers on new plantings.
  • Long drive to the East Bay for the yoga class. Alone. Yay.

Bravery:

  • Fought off all comers to keep Sunday all to myself. This was sort of a big deal, but I'm not going to be any good to anybody if I never get a moment's peace.

Side challenges:

  • Get up when the alarm goes off, every day. DONE!
  • No alcohol this week. Beer on Sat, none on Sun.
  • Get out my rope. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. Done on Sat, not on Sun.
  • Walk 2500 steps every day. DONE!

Yay you! Loads of good stuff happening this week (I am intrigued by chicken and crunchy things too... some kind of crispy grub type larva thing perhaps?)

Yoga with ropes! (out of interest, what was this?)

Good tactics with your Dad!

Kneeling push-ups! (I levelled up to these about a month ago... I am SO proud that I can actually do a proper nose to the ground movement for the first time in my life.)

Getting the Cherokee Shuffle down!

10 minutes of yoga turning into 30!

Just general awesomeness!

Are you finding that keeping track on a daily basis here is giving you more insight into exactly how much you're achieving? Or are you doing the record keeping as another thing you have to do and not appreciating all of these many victories? Just wondering. I tend to do the latter, but you may not be so daft.

Half-Elf Bard, Level 6 Ranger. (Or possibly a Druid?)

We're not aiming for perfection, just progress.

Hey hey hey! Sulinar! I thought I felt someones's steady and supportive gaze on me. :-)

The updates here are absolutely crucial to moving forward and getting stuff done. Without my battle log, I'd probably just sit in the sun and dream a lot. :-)

Moved my dad!

This was the focus of the last three days, and that was puh-lenty. All other goals fell by the wayside, I'm afraid. (Including dietary goals - in a moment of stress, helped my brother to down the plate of chocolate kisses and cookies Aegis left in Dad's room as a welcome.)

Dad's in and so is most of his stuff. It's a nice place and I think we're all going to be happier. Still pictures to hang and a few things to get, but I think we're doing okay.

Whew!

That was a biggie, y'all.

Lesson learned: Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. A breakfast fail makes me vulnerable the rest of the day. Now I don't feel quite so guilty about getting the spousal unit to scramble me those eggs every morning.

Daily exercise:

  • Walked 4,500 steps! Had to take a few circles around the kitchen before bed to tuck those last few in, but did it!

Taking time:

  • After the blood test, I took those pastries and a cup of coffee out to the little patio at the side of the building, and sat in the sun, leisurely sipping and chomping. Watched a little phoebe swooping around above the pond. Took deep breaths. Calmed down and felt good.

Bravery:

  • Got biometric screening done at work. Let them draw blood and did not faint.

Side challenges:

  • Get up when the alarm goes off, every day except WFH days (Fri-Sun). Not done. Rough night and took an extra hour in bed this am.
  • Meditate for 5 mins every day. Not done. See above.
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. Not done. Spaced out in front of the TV instead.
  • Walk 4,500 steps every day from here on out. Up from yesterday by another 500 steps. DONE!
  • Crow Pose progress: soften & stretch wrists, then add a little weight. DONE!
  • Identify 3 opportunities for self-care improvement, implement this week:
    • Face-care routine each evening. DONE!
    • Floss each evening. DONE!
    • Cut out alcohol Sunday - Thursday. DONE!

Goals for the month:

  • Play Cherokee Shuffle up to speed on the mandolin.
  • Walk 5,000 steps a day in the last week of April.
  • Do a Crow pose.

Eating paleo:

  • Breakfast - apple and a banana
  • Lunch - weird fish and weird veggies with white rice.
  • Snack - chocolate peanut butter chip brownie.
  • Dinner - fish tacos with rice and chips, no beans.

Not the best eating day, again. I just realized that having to  report these food-fails keep me from making an update, or moving forward with other goals.

Daily exercise:

  • Fast warm-up, then 3x3 kneeling push-ups, 3x11 lunges, each leg,  3x5 chin-ups at the deeper angle, 3x11-seconds side planks, each side, 3 X 11 1/2 boat poses. Cool down working wrists, and twisting. Followed by just lying there.
  • Walked 7.1K steps.

Taking time:

  • Walk at lunchtime. Lovely day!

Bravery:

  • Sort of rebuked my new manager for jumping to conclusions. Not sure this was brave...it might simply have been not smart. :-)

Side challenges:

  • Get up when the alarm goes off, every day except WFH days (Fri-Sun). Not done. But I still forced myself to do my morning BWW. I was just late for work. Fair trade.
  • Meditate for 5 mins every day. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. Not done.
  • Walk 4,500 steps every day from here on out. Up from yesterday by another 500 steps. DONE!

Fri Apr 21 - Sun Apr 23

Eating paleo:

  • Breakfast - eggs and bacon for the most part, but did have a croissant, too.
  • Lunch - stuck to salads and wraps.
  • Dinner - Mexican twice, including beans and rice. No cheese.
  • Alcohol - kept it to Fri and Sat, per the plan. But had lots on Sat.
  • Snacks - cookies here and there, all weekend.

Daily exercise:

  • Walking - got my steps in every day.
  • BWW on Sat.
  • Some serious landscaping action on Sat.

Taking time:

  • Quiet moments in the morning, just me and a cup of coffee and the little graykins.

Bravery:

  • Meeting w/Dad's care manager on Sat, and all that went with it.
  • Strategized on how to introduce a walker into the mix. Think we'll go with a rollator, and position it as a device to help you go faster.

Side challenges: Pretty good on all the below. 2 out of 3 for everything but the practicing (which was nada).

  • Get up when the alarm goes off, every day except WFH days (Fri-Sun).
  • Meditate for 5 mins every day.
  • Mando practice for 20 mins.
  • Walk 4,500 steps every day from here on out.
  • Crow Pose progress: soften & stretch wrists, then add a little weight.
  • Identify 3 opportunities for self-care improvement, implement this week:
    • Face-care routine each evening.
    • Floss each evening.
    • Cut out alcohol Sunday - Thursday.

Goals for the month:

  • Play Cherokee Shuffle up to speed on the mandolin. Update: know it by heart. Still working on speed.
  • Walk 5,000 steps a day in the last week of April. Update: getting there. Reliably up to 4.5K steps.
  • Do a Crow pose. Update: this is a pretty hard pose. I'm working towards it, but might not be able to do one by end of April.

Mon Apr 24

Whoa. Slowly but steadily gaining weight this past month. Sad faces abound.

Experiment this week: just eat very very cleanly. Don't do anything other than the stuff I'm already doing, but eat and drink cleanly. Let's see if any weight comes off with just that action. An experiment, if you will.

Starting weight on Mon morning: 134.4

Let the games begin!

Eating paleo:

  • Breakfast - eggs and spinach.
  • Snack - nuts and dried fruit.
  • Lunch - work salad.
  • Snack - apple.
  • Dinner - chicken fajita and broc.

Daily exercise:

  • Walked 7.7K steps

Taking time:

  • Quiet walk at lunchtime. About to rain, so no one out there. Saw a pair of Canada geese in the tall grass! Mr. Goose was watching over Mrs. Goose while she was eating.

Bravery:

  • Sent note to brother to ask if he would come down and sell Dad's truck. I just don't want to do it. No other reason than that.

Side challenges for the week:

  • Walking meditation for 5 mins every day. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. Not done. Sigh.
  • Walk 5,00 steps every day. DONE!
  • Crow Pose progress: take feet off the ground. Not done.
  • Nutrition Boss Battle
    • Plan meals from now through Wednesday dinnertime. DONE!
    • Plan shopping and prep. DONE!
    • Execute against the plan.

Goals for the month:

  • Play Cherokee Shuffle up to speed on the mandolin.
  • Walk 5,000 steps a day in the last week of April.
  • Do a Crow pose.

Tues Apr 25

Eating paleo:

  • Breakfast - eggs, onions, bells, and spinach.
  • Snack - apple.
  • Lunch - work salad.
  • Snack - pecan and a couple of dates
  • Dinner - turkey burger with grill veggies. Yum!

Daily exercise:

  • Yoga warm-up, then 3x4 kneeling push-ups, 3x11 lunges, each leg,  3x5 chin-ups at the deeper angle, 3x11-seconds side planks, each side, 3 X 11 1/2 boat poses, working toward a full one. Cool down working wrists, and twisting in front of the fireplace with Emma.
  • Walked 7.1K steps.

Taking time:

  • I took a walk at lunchtime, but I was going to do that anyway, so I'm only noting it here, not counting it as, you know, spayshell.
  • Walked through the garden when I got home. Pretty Lady Rose is in full bloom and smells fantastic!

Bravery:

  • Called Aegis and called them on the carpet about Dad's bedding. This is a big deal for me, and part of me thought, 'oh, i'm sure this was just because someone was new/busy/on-vacation/forgetful/ignorant. But then I thought, 'Bullshit. No excuse.'
  • The conversation went well, I was matter-of-fact but pointed, and remained calm. The care manager felt bad.
  • When I said, 'If this is just too much trouble for someone to get done, just tell me and I'll come over and do it myself,' she really fell apart apologizing.
  • 'Nuff said. I hope.

Side challenges for the week:

  • Walking meditation for 5 mins every day. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. DONE!
  • Walk 5,00 steps every day. DONE!
  • Crow Pose progress: take feet off the ground. DONE! Got knees behind forearms, and weight up to my very tippy tippy toes.

Eating paleo:

Working lunch today with sandwiches. Let's see if I can figure something out! It's a chaaaaaaalllllllenge!

  • Breakfast - eggs, onions, bells, and spinach.
  • Snack - apple, a few nuts.
  • Lunch - deconstructed club sandwich (pulled it apart and used the lettuce for 'bread'). Win!
  • Snack - apple, a few pecans
  • Dinner - turkey burger w/bacon, steamed broc.

Daily exercise:

  • Yoga for 20 minutes. Realized that I haven't done a full sun salutation in a while. Felt good, but I could tell I've been letting this slide a bit.
  • Walked 7.1K steps

Taking time:

  • Picked up Dad and took him down to the beach. Leaned on a rail and watched the sun go down. Didn't do nuthin' else. Just chatted about this and that and let the day quietly end.

Bravery:

  • Almost fell apart at one point when I had some wild scheduling snafus. Took a walk instead of going to the parking garage to cry. Win!

Side challenges for the week:

  • Walking meditation for 5 mins every day. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins.
  • Walk 5,00 steps every day. DONE!
  • Crow Pose progress: take feet off the ground. DONE! Got knees behind forearms, and weight up to my very tippy tippy toes again. It was just as hard as it was, yesterday. I think I need to review how to get up there -- the way i'm going at it right now, it feels far more about strength than about balance.

Eating paleo:

Team lunch today at a local Mexican restaurant. The most yummy restaurant

  • Breakfast - eggs, onions, bells, and spinach.
  • Snack - apple, a few nuts.
  • Lunch - bent a little and had margaritas with the gang. I know there was peer pressure involved, but I think it was the right thing. Food-wise, stuck to the salad with chicken on top.
  • Dinner - seasoned chicken and broc.

Daily exercise:

  • Whoa. Next injury site REALLY acting up-- pain and numbness all the way down to my fingertips. I think the crow-pose efforts are the root cause.
  • Did yoga for 35 mins, focussing on releasing my neck and shoulders.  Counted this as today's workout (see note on goal-setting page about listening to the ol' body talk).
  • Walked 5.1K steps. Got it in but just barely.

Taking time:

  • Strolled meditatively around the garden. And volunteered to run to the grocery store.

Bravery:

  • Did not cry when I realized my fingers had pain and numbness from the old neck thingie. It is what it is. Now it's time to adjust things to get to recovery fast.

Side challenges for the week:

  • Walking meditation for 5 mins every day. DONE!
  • Mando practice for 20 mins. Not done. Again.
  • Walk 5,00 steps every day. DONE!
  • Crow Pose progress: take feet off the ground. Bailed.  important to recognize when something isn't right for your body. I'm actually calling this a win, because for the first freakin' time in my life, I listened and responded instead of just "powering through" to the detriment of my physical health (can you say 'ruptured disk'?).

Goals for the month:

  • Play Cherokee Shuffle up to speed on the mandolin.
  • Walk 5,000 steps a day in the last week of April.
  • Do a Crow pose.
