Tzippi's Ascent to the Eyrie - Westeros Travelogue - Vale Edition

Recommended Posts

It’s not spring here yet, but the worst winter my town has had in recorded history is passing by, and I am ready to be done. Done with sidewalks and streets too slick to walk safely, Done with freezing in my own house. Done with shoveling snow (actually, I quite enjoyed that, except first thing in the morning before my breakfast. Boo.). I’m also feeling spring-ly because I’m currently pregnant, after a miscarriage last year. So Rejuvenation and quickening life is definitely on my mind, though not very reflected outside my window.

Throughout Westeros, the coming of Spring, like the coming of any other season, is marked by the flying of White Ravens from the Maesters at the Citadel in Oldtown to Castles, towns, and fortresses.

tumblr_mg8rv51cB41ru1pgno1_1280.jpg

In the mountainous Kingdom of the East, the Vale marks the coming of spring with the return of The Lord of the Vale to the Eyrie, the ancient castle which sits atop a peak called the Giant’s Lance and is the seat of House Arryn. From his Winter seat at the Gates of the moon, the Lord and his household ascend past three waycastles called Stone, Snow, and Sky to reach the Eyrie itself. I need an ascent out of winter and out of my laziness and complacence, so I will follow the Spring ascent to the Eyrie for this challenge, and as the next stop on my Westerosi Travelogue.

The_Eyrie-TN.jpg

1.  Fresh fruits and vegetables coming in from the Vale’s farmland as well as the port at Gulltown (with the winter ice and storms past) would be one change. While Dorne and the Reach can harvest into the Winter, the northeastern Vale is largely high-altitude, as well as north.  I mean to add more vegetables and fruit to my diet, a minimum of 3 servings per day. 1 must be leafy (raw salads, cooked spinach or cabbage, and seaweeds from the Sisters all count as “leafy”) to get full points. This will be a chained goal, with each successful day multiplying its worth. Over 4 weeks, (28 days), a chain of five days will achieve my “Stone” goal. A chain of ten days will achieve “Snow”. A chain of fifteen days will achieve my “Sky” goal, and anything past that gets me to the Eyrie. Two successful Stones becomes a Snow, and two successful Snows becomes a Sky, but ten nonconsecutive days cannot be a Snow. I’m keeping my daily goal low (3 servings is very doable, but I need to get into better habits of cooking and eating, hence the chaining). SUCCESS = CON +2

2.  Only madmen and Southerners war in Winter. North of the Neck, or in mountainous areas like the Vale, fighting men train as best they can inside their castles, waiting for the melting of snow and ice to make the ways between castles passable again. I have a lot of training to do, but winter sluggishness (and first trimester exhaustion) mean I need to be creative and work on adding it up, rather than trying to do big workouts several times a week. I need to be active (more active than mere step count – strength training, yoga, or bodyweight will work here, as will jogging, swimming, or hiking) to get ready for the spring ascent. Goal is 120 minutes per week. Each week successful is another step on the journey – Stone, Snow, Sky, the Eyrie. SUCCESS = STR +1 STA +1

3.  Until the bounty of tithes and tribute from peasants and vassal houses starts coming in, even the House of Arryn will be mostly eating from the winter stores. Ensuring that food is provisioned properly is a chore of winter that continues into spring, but as the Vale breaks their fasts from fresh foods, I’ll attempt to break my daily fasts more responsibly. Breakfast has too often been stopping at Starbucks or Jamba Juice and eating at my desk, which I don’t like doing. To help with this challenge, I intend to build up stores of smoothie and energy bar-making ingredients per No meat Athlete, as well as eggs and veggie sausages. This should help keep me from getting bored, and also provide several fast options for breakfast (though my beloved soft-boiled eggs will have to wait until September). Eating at home is a success (unless it’s instant waffles with syrup) , eating out or not eating is a failure. Same chaining numbers as the veg challenge to reach Stone, Snow, Sky, and the Eyrie. SUCCESS = CON +2 CHA +1

4.  This last one is going to be a little on the nose, since an Eyrie is literally a nest. But I am obviously very excited to not only be coming up on my first spring as a homeowner, but also preparing for my first child (due September 10th). I have a lot of things I want to do, and am not sure yet how to grade this one. Maybe make it a mini-challenge with lots of parts that each have a point allocation? Anyway, I want to get my house and year ready, by starting seeds indoors, logging the light hours in our garden to determine where to put raised beds come spring, shop for hardy, seed-sharable veg and fruit to plant, clear the room that will be the nursery, and of course, literally prepare myself for a physical challenge, with prenatal yoga, stretching, and meditation to get ready for birth. I’ll probably prioritize the yoga, stretching, and meditation for now, along with doing some reading and starting to work on a birth plan with my husband and my OB. Specifics to come, probably a time/week spent on this topic in general. EDITED: I'm going to call it 3 times a week. SUCCESS = WIS +2 DEX +1

I’ll probably start a mini-game for those house and garden-prep chores, like I did in Japan, with points allocated by how much I hate it. # points = buy a song on iTunes for my playlist, ## points = some bigger, non-food treat like a pedicure or a massage.

Week 1 review

My Fruits and veggies challenge worked great - I reached the waycastle at STONE on my ascent!

My Breakfast challenge was also a great success - making smoothies has been a great way to start off my day with fruits, protein, and veggies. Waycastle at STONE reached!

I moved for a total of 174 minutes this week! I counted my long lunch walks, but not general step count to get through my day, which I have also tried to increase.

My nesting goal was my one failure, with 2/3 achieved.

Week Two Retrospective:

Fruit and Veg Challenge: Reached the Waycastle at Snow, plus one day before the chain was broken. Definite Success!

Breakfast challenge: Reached the Waycastle at Snow, plus two days. Chain continues unbroken!

Movement challenge: I really didn't want to do my entire minutes goal in one go, but with a sick husband the week got away from me. However, over two hours of hard labor fighting the lilac monster counts. Success

Nesting: Meditation and yoga 3/3!

Week 3 Retrospective

What I learned this week: I really love starting my day with a smoothie, and get really disappointed if I can't have it. I need to keep supplies on hand, and get more when I'm halfway down, rather than waiting until I'm completely out. Starting off with some fiber makes my whole day go better.

Fruit and Veg: reached Waycastle SKY!

Breakfast: reached Waycastle SKY!

Movement: Did it all in one day again, but with another 15 minutes on another day. Not really what I'm going for. May have to tweak this goal next challenge to reflect three discrete sessions or something.

Nesting: 3/3

When-She-Smacks-Hell-Out-Her-Little-Cous

Sunday:

Fruit and veg goal: Success Day! Day 1 of Chain from Snow to Sky.

Breakfast goal: Fail Day, but no matter. If I can keep it up on workdays, I'll make it to the Eyrie!

Movement: Ha ha ha.

Nesting: Not so much today, though it was nice hanging out preggo-style with my SIL.

Monday:

Breakfast Goal: Success. Day 1 of Chain from Snow to Sky

Fruit and Veg goal: Success. Day 2 of Chain from Snow to Sky

Movement: 15 minutes.

Nesting: I'm counting it. Mr. Longstockings and I talked out some concerns and ideas about thing.  1/3

Tuesday:

Veg and Fruit goal: A moral victory. Day three of Chain from Snow to Sky.

Breakfast goal: Success. Day two of chain from Snow to Sky.

Movement: to and from bathrooms. Not a success.

Nesting: I went to bed early, but more out of giving up than anything.

Wednesday:

Fruit and Veg: 2 fruit, 1 leafy veg is a success, but I can do better after dance tonight. Day 4 of Chain from Snow to Sky

Breakfast: Sad trombone, but a success. Day 3 of chain from Snow to Sky

Movement: 14 in the morning, 120 minutes of dancing at night. 134 minutes! Week success already, but let's go on!

Congratulations on the new arrival!!

Thanks. I'm super-excited, and of course want to do all the things to be healthy and  strong for September, but also not overdoing it, especially with this crazy exhaustion. Should hit second trimester at the end of this challenge.

Thanks! I'm super-glad to be back. Reading over my challenges in Japan (including those mini-challenges) is making me miss it so much, but I love being back, having my own house, being able to grow our family, and of course, AMERICA-SIZED PRODUCE DEPARTMENTS. I still can't get over the amazing variety and bounty in my supermarket. It's incredible. I do miss being able to buy a quarter-head of cabbage, though. Or half a kabocha.

9/10 is theoretically the day, but could be anything around there. I'll drink a bunch of red raspberry leaf on 9/9 and see if I can't manage a mini-shaar.

Oh, I'm new to your threads and didn't realize you lived in Japan previously.  My brother and his family have lived over there for most of the last 20 years.  They live in Tokyo so the kids can go to the ASIJ and my brother works in Utsunomiya during the week.  Whenever he is in the states, he just wants subs and wings.  LOL.  I guess my sister in law's uncle owns a big produce market in Tokyo so they must stay well stocked in produce. :D  What took you to Japan?

Teaching for a year in high schools on Shikoku (big southern island). It was also kind of our extended working honeymoon. I didn't have a lot to do, so I worked out a lot. And I had a tiny little fridge, so I cooked all the time. And I didn't have a car (or need one, because the city was set up for people who didn't have them), so I walked or rode my bike everywhere.

Can't get the good purple-skin, white-flesh sweet potatoes here, though. Or some of the specific mushrooms.

That sounds awesome!  My daughter is starting college in the fall and is hoping to study English.  We've talked about her doing something like this later.

And WTF about the potatoes.  They call those potatoes Japanese Murasaki potatoes at Trader Joe's.  I feel betrayed!

Yup. They were everywhere in Japan, but Trader Joe's only has them seasonally. I'd stir-fry them with shredded red cabbage, mirin, shoyu, and a bit of brown sugar.

Ok. So much stuff going on!

Last night, I managed to get to the Asian market to get some hijiki* seaweed and fried tofu, for making my hijiki salad that I loved so much in Japan.

*Star Trek fans might know hijiki as " the stuff that looks kind of like gagh"

hijiki2-lg.jpggowrongagh.jpg

I may have to do a Klingon challenge at some point, just to spend some time with hijiki, wakame, and maybe pickled ginger for the pink, to try to make a "faux gagh" dish. It's hard eating Klingon when you're kosher, let alone vegetarian.

Unfortunately, they (Asian Market, not Klingon Empire) were out of kombu (a thicker seaweed used to make a umami-salty stock called dashi), so I have to go out again today before I can prepare my favorite salad. Getting back to the Vale, seaweed is most often mentioned in Iron Islands cuisine, but I'm sure the Sistermen and other shore dwellers of the Vale would use the high-fiber, high-iron sea vegetables to supplement their shellfish and stringy mutton diet.

The_Vale.png

Apart from that, it's snowing again. It's supposed to be warm and rainy the rest of this week, though, so I hope to start on walking and very slow jogging soon, to prep for my  Goal #2 above.

Whoo! First time to dance class in almost a month, and I almost managed it all. Got through level one just fine, but level two I got a little dizzy while doing the Arabic quarter turn. I thought it was the turning, but I stopped turning and was still dizzy. I started turning again, and did the arms, but stopped the body wave movement of the Arabic basic, and the dizzy went away.

Not sure if I was maybe holding my breath to concentrate, or if somehow the wave movement was doing something to my preggo-weird system, but I just stopped doing that particular move and finished class strong. That's two 1.5 hour classes (though there is a decent amount of downtime during each), which is the most physical work I've done in probably a month (except for some snow shoveling). It felt really good. Slept like the dead afterwards, too.

a bit more tired again today, but I'm maybe still recovering from yesterday. Got some of the ingredients I listed for my food goals, and may bake up a batch of the energy bars this weekend, to see how my first formula  goes.

latest?cb=20160829160819  Hopefully better than this.

Unrelated to my challenge, but I figure the "do all the things" rangers may be interested:

This weekend project, siphoning my cider off the yeast and into a carboy for secondary fermentation. It's been on the yeast for a . . . long time, so it may be very very dry and strong, so I'll probably have to backsweeten it before bottling. Super-excited, because it's my first-ever ferment of something other than cabbage or kvass.

Ok, the weekend didn't start quite as strong as I'd have liked. But, I did some other very cool stuff. Sunday was:

A total wash as far as food goes. I ate an apple. No veg, no leafies, not even any other fruits. An apple, and some jam. Big fail on the eating side. My breakfast goal is for workdays, so it doesn't apply to Sunday. I didn't do any exercise (went over t0o my brother and sister in law's to help them paint their nursery wall. It look so cool. I'll try to get a picture soon.

(ETA; another fun thing Sunday - I bought a pitchfork for turning my compost heap. I need to get it home, though - left it at my brother's. Still, that's good work I can do to make good soil to fill my garden come spring, which will in turn lead to more veg for me this summer and fall!)

Then  we played Pathfinder for a while. My necromancer got to raise a shipwrecker crab (roughly fifty feet across) as a skeleton, so we're making an undead tank now.

I did get a chance to visit my friend who had her baby last week, and to meet the little. I can't believe I'm making one of those! But we brought them over dinner and got smelling-baby-head time, so it was a good day overall.

On to Monday!

But, despite yesterday, I'm starting today (Monday) strong with a smoothie made from the No Meat Athlete Smoothie formula. I used:

Banana (.5 serving fruit for me)

Frozen peaches (.5 serving fruit for me)

Sun butter

Rolled oats (lack of protein powder)

Blueberries

Milk

Chia seeds

Spinach - (.5 serving leaf for me)

Honey

Pretty good flavor. A little odd, because I’m not used to the nut butter flavor in a smoothie, but pretty good. Really ugly grey-purple color. Texture might be better if the oats had been soaked overnight to soften. I’ll try that tonight/tomorrow.

I also packed myself a lunch that includes some cabbage cole slaw (1 leaf, check), and apple (1 fruit, check) and zucchini and cherry tomatoes cooked into my rice and beans (probably .5 veg, check). Counting breakfast smoothie, that takes care of my minimum fruit and veg for the day, but I'm going to try to have more tonight (shouldn't be hard - I have lettuce ready to go and just need to cook some eggs and potatoes to make a big salade niçoise).

I mean to walk at lunch today, if the weather allows, and so a little something (probably just half an hour or so of yoga or 14 minutes of playing with my hammer) when I get home before I sit down. If I can stop by the Asia Market to get that kombu and a sushi mat, I can also make up some bento staples for the rest of this week.

We'll see how I finish out the day. Getting out of bed AT 6 am gave me time for a quick shower, making the smoothies for me and my husband, taking out the trash, recycling, and compost, and being at work five minutes early. Without worrying about the trash, or as I get faster with the smoothies, I should be able to get some time to pack myself a proper bento lunch or do 14 minutes of shovelgloving. which may be one of my favorite workouts ever.

Will edit tonight to update on how I did.

Update!

I took a 35 minute walk over lunch, which counts toward my exercise goal. After work, got to the store, and got some veg roasted, the smoothie prep done for the next morning, and a dish of roasted veg and bean enchiladas made. I then had to A.) sit down, and B.) do the weekly email for my synagogue. So I didn't get any other working out done, but I think it was still a successful day.

Daily rundown: Veg and fruit: Successful Day. Exercise: 35 minutes. Breakfast: Successful Day.

Tuesday the 14th

Smoothie this morning is:

cooked carrots (1 veg)

Banana and Frozen peaches (1 fruit)

soaked rolled oats

brown rice protein (unflavored)

milk

turmeric, cinnamon, maple syrup

ice

It's pretty good, but some orange juice would help to brighten it up. I think peaches just aren't a strong enough flavor. At least these frozen ones.

Didn't sleep past my alarm, but didn't get up either - I had some aching pain in my back that I tried to fight with some gentle cobra pose(ish) and cat-cow. It's kind of embarrassing, because I didn't even work out yesterday, but I think it's from being on my feet on hard floor as much as I was last night, doing dishes and all that veggie prep. It's been a very "go home and sit immediately after getting some water" few weeks, so I may have to work up to doing bigger cooking projects again.

But while I didn't get a workout in this morning, I did get smoothies made and a lunch packed (roasted veg and bean enchilada with some extra roasted veg on the side, and some shredded cabbage/kale/Brussels sprouts salad). Which is my leafy greens and another serving of veg, bringing the day up to four, before dinner or the apple I brought for the afternoon.

I'll also walk again over lunch - it's finally nice enough, and there's a 15 minute out-15 minute in walk along the Greenbelt (Boise's walk/run/bike path along the river) near my work. almost all the ice is melted, and the few patches left are easy to avoid.

Probably no working out tonight, because my husband, brother, sister-in-law, and I all decided to skip or postpone Valentine's in favor of playing Pathfinder. I'll stop by home and bring some more of my yummy salad to go with whatever (probably not very healthy food) we have for dinner.

Edited for evening: Salad for lunch, and I did day one of the 100 push-up challenge* and 14 minutes of shovelglove before heading over to game.  Had salad and a slice of pizza while gaming (we killed an animate nightmare)

4 fruit and veg (2 leafy greens) - Successful day (Day 2 of chain!). Worked out for 20 minutes. Breakfast success (Day 2 of chain!).

* I got confused an thought it was the Strength week of the Rangers Gonna Ranger challenge. I'll try to run tomorrow and Saturday to make my distance goals. Stupid lack of careful reading.

Wednesday the 15 (yesterday)

Started off with a good smoothie, though my back hurt and my arms were all wibbly (I assume from shovelgloving for the first time in forever).

Mixed berry smoothie with cooked carrots = 1 fruit, .5 veg.

Had leftover roasted veg and bean enchiladas for lunch (with extra veg on the side), a cup of shredded cabbage and Brussels sprouts slaw, and an apple for afternoon snack = 1 leafy veg, 1 veg, 1 fruit.

Walked at lunch. It was colder than I'd expected, and I started feeling nauseous and a little swimmy-headed on the way back. 30 minutes.

Went to dance anyway and did well! another 60 minutes of activity.

For a lateish dinner, had two slices of thin crust white pizza with a ton of spinach on it'll count it as .333 leafy veg.

Fruit and veg: 4.8, 1 leafy. Successful Day (Day three of chain- more than halfway to Stone!) Moved for 90 minutes. Breakfast - Successful day (day three of chain - more than halfway to Stone!). Stretching and meditating at dance class will count as one occurrence of my self-care goal.
