Agnarr: Respawn

Hi! It's been a long long while.

During summer vacation I derailed embarracingly, had a bazillion beers, ate whatever the heck I wanted, woke up every day feeling like I had lava  on my guts and one of my friends was mistakenly taken into custody and had to spend 4 days locked up until we managed to get things straight and get the poor dude out. Good times...

But now it's time to get back on track and shed the extra Kgs. I've already returned to CF and Krav Maga. I'm also officialy dieting, that is obsessively tracking macros and calories (especially calories) even on weekends. I've cut out alcohol and started intermitent fasting again, in ~15 hour fasts(which basically means not having breakfast).

Nare is on vacation with her parents and the academic year has not started yet, so it's a perfect time to focus on training and eating right. Let's do this!

Hey, following along in hopes of hearing more of your thoughts on Start the World. Also for crushing the fitness goals, 'n' stuff.

I've been reading a lot of P. Waggener too lately. even if I don't agree 100% with everything they say, both Donovan and Waggener have drastically changed a my view of the world, my place on it and among my peers.

Last night mt dad made pork with a side of rice for dinner. Carbs were higher than supposed but overall I still achieved a 359kcal deficit.

Today is Krav Maga day and I'm excited to see what the instructor brings up. Next month they are tranfering me to the late shift at work, which means I'll have to reschedule my whole life around that. I wish I can still make it to KM, as I enjoy those classes greatly

Soundtrack for this morning \m/

I'm so glad to hear that the krav Maga classed are fun! Last time I heard, you had just started and weren't quite sure you liked it. Are you a lethal weapon yet??

As much as I would like to spoil my male ego, I'm far from a lethal weapon yet. That said, I'm finding the drills and techniques almost perform themselves once I've practiced them 20 or 30 times. Obviously, in a real stress situation I seriously doubt my fight-or-flight response would allow for the complex stuff. At least at this early stage of learning

I'll admit I missed the part where you got into Krav Maga. Still a newbie I assume, heading towards P1 exams?

Still a newbie, hoping not to get my face caved in and my ass kicked if I ever get attacked. For now my main gig is still CF. Of course if I find a more stable IKMF affiliate I'd like to take exams in the future. Currently the classes take place on a public park and it takes me about an hour to get there from work, which causes me to skip some days among other setbacks like stepping on dog poop while sparring and not having a propper restroom. But it's dirt cheap and for now works fine with my work hours.

As I was just telling D_R, as soon as college is in session, I won't be able to make both anymore unless I find a late hours, really close affiliate. Until then I'm trying to absorve as much knowledge and training as possible.

02/09/2017 - Week 0 Day 4

Workout: Hell of a KM class!

after a bazillion burpees, pushups and some awkward pistol squats we practiced  some dismounts, defence against front choke and guilliotine choke, and a bit of light sparring. The last part of the class consisted of a drill where students took turns to stand in the middle of a circle doing burpees, mountan climbers, pushups and the such at the instructors comand while the rest of them walked around said circle.

One the guy in the middle got tired and breathless the instructor called the guys outside the circle for random attacks from every direction.

Each one of us stood in the middle 3 times, and every time we where supposed to up the intensity. The last round was awesome: most of the attacks were at high speed, the chokes were forceful and it took propper technique to escape, especially against advanced practitioners. Took a few good punches, gave a few good punches and broke all chokes, even got to prevent some of them. Adrenaline was high and I really liked it.

The instructor told us that next Thursday we'll be sparring in full gear, something which I'm really looking forward to.

Nutrition: I was so tired I zoned out and completely forgot to log or even weight my food. I had about 1200 kcal left, so it was probably fine considering dinner was chicken, salad and mashed potatos.

From what instructors have told me, nobody expects that, but if you pull off even 50% of it, you have a good chance of survival. The idea is to get you from a panicked helpless victim to someone who'll react and fight for survival. The circle&attacks routine you described is a common practice, exhausting practitioners and then having them do everything. It's reaction under duress. Conditions are never ideal and neither will your response be.

This ties in to my previous stuff. A good KM instructor once told me fights are nothing like the choreographies used in order to familiarize one with techniques. I also remember a quote from a book (think it was Pressfield's "Gates of Fire"?) where the soldiers were passing a field and someone mused how nobody ever thinks of fields or cities as battlefields. What I'm saying here is, you never know when it'll happen. If someone tries to mug you in a park, you won't be thinking about dodging dog poop. I guess a seasoned practicioner would think about using the dog poop to solve the problem, maybe smearing them on an attacker's face or something.

Sure, that's true. Is better to train for  poor conditions than having to figure them out in the middle of an attack. Practicing and sparring on irregular terrain proved to be far more challenging than on a dojo or gym enviroment.

My point is, landing on poop after a takedown (which happened to me yesterday)can be counterproductive to the training session unless you have a spare tshirt (which I had) or your partners don't mind getting poop rubbed on their clothings. And is gross as f*ck.

Besides, not having basic training facilities makes changing clothes a bit awkward (especially for female practitioners) and makes it difficult to tend to minor injuries.

Tonight and tomorrow will be a test for me. Tonight I'm meeting my airsoft buddies for dinner and tomorrow is a friend's birthday party. And the man parties like a Jarl:  booze and grill, all day. Grilled meat and water will be my allies. If I manage to resist snacks and alcohol it will be a victory on my book.

Update on WOD in a few hours
