Jarric: As Yet Untitled

So for those of you who may not have seen this, there's a show on British TV called Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled (Wikipedia link) in which Alan Davies sits at a round table with 4 guests (mostly comedians) and shares stories and talks nonsense for an hour, with no agenda, no plan, just having a chat. At the end of the hour they pick a title for the show based on what they've talked about. I've only just discovered the show and love it, so in the interest of sharing stories and talking lots of nonsense for this challenge I want to do the same - at the end of the challenge we'll pick a name for the challenge based on what's happened this month.

Format!

Last challenge (which I will go back and wrap up soon, promise!) fizzled out a bit at the end, so I'm jumping straight back in and making this one a 5 week challenge. Building on my 2017 road map and my last challenge the goals will be similar to last month, with a few minor tweaks...

Goals!

Move! - 15XP

What? Exercise every single day.

Why? Working towards my OCRs this year, and I find I work better working every day than trying to have rest days.

How? Follow Juggernaut lifting plan MWF and Runkeeper sub-55 minute 10k plan TTSS. I'm rolling the 4 days of lifting over three days (until I become ruler of the world and make standard weeks 8 days long), so if one week is Monday Bench, Wednesday Squat, Friday OHP, then the next week will be Monday Deadlift, Wednesday Bench, Friday Squat. Make sense? The running program is a faster version of the 10k plan I ran last year (and briefly injured my hips on), and I rather enjoyed it so I'm trying it again.

Snooze! - 10XP

What? Don't hit snooze!

Why? Because I set that time for a reason, and I need to remember that! And I don't like rushing (more than usual) in the morning.

How? On weekdays, when my alarm goes off at 05:30, get up without hitting snooze.

Track! - 10XP

What? Track calories every day

Why? Because I've lost sight of quite how much I should be eating, and I want to find that again. And it wouldn't hurt to lose the barrel I'm carrying around my waist at the moment either!

How? Track calories using Fitbit (and best guesses where necessary) every day. No target amount until I work out how generous Fitbit is being with the calorie burn.

Budget! - 15XP

What? Stick to my weekly budget

Why? Because getting out of debt and saving is one of my main goals for the year, and ultimately because I want to own my own house before I reach retirement age!

How? Every week I have a weekly budget of £80 for random sundry expenses (this feels like far too much, but whatever). This doesn't include groceries, work travel or exercise expenses, or bills/rent which come directly out of my account. Basically it's food and drink out and random stuff.

And to get us going on the random chat, and icebreaker (I may do a few of these):

Icebreaker: Have you ever won a trophy or medal?

So for me, I won a couple of trophies when I was about 14 in a pool competition. Run by a caravan park in Wales. I think as a way to shift off-season tickets. But it was the start of something and I've had a string of pool and snooker trophies since, so I have fond memories of it :) .

I've been a runner for a bunch of years. Last year was the first time I won a race. It was a 5K with an untimed polar plunge at the end. I was the women's overall winner and the master's winner (I'll admit it was a very small race). I won a pair of long glass ornaments with a feather inside each one.

I won a trip to Mexico when I was in high school (Spanish contest).

p.s. I like your goals. Except the 5:30 am part. That sounds terrible (but necessary). I also love your idea about the title!

Found you! Following for teh metal and teh mud.

On trophies/medals: I got a certificate or two from competing as a swimmer during my teenage years. Upon returning to fitness, I earned my first medal in late 2014 for running a 5k race around a local village. Done a few 5k and 10k races around town, plus various trail races (usually from 7 to 13km), each earning me another medal for the collection. Latest trophy came for completing a Spartan Super last spring and I'm looking for a similar one upon completion of this year's Tough Mudder.

...you know, I don't think I've ever won a trophy or a medal in my life. I'm searching my memories, trying to come up with something, and I'm drawing a blank. This saddens me, so I'm gonna bring up winning a uni photo contest in my third year. Won every category I entered (three of the four). No medals or trophies, but I do have some half decent canvas prints of the winning entries :D

I'm hoping my first medal is going to come along in the form of a Spartan sprint finisher medal!

Pool trophies? That's really cool, prize money much of a thing, or just enough to cover beer money?

I was a homeschool jock growing up, so the athletics trophies i won were for policy debate. I ran that high school.

No, no prize money really. I got about £50 out of one, and beer vouchers from a couple of others, but nothing too exciting!

That's awesome winning your first race! I know that you must obviously have a bajillion finisher medals from all the races you do.

The 5:30 am part is disgusting, but work's a two hour commute at the moment so it's the only time I can find to get a workout in! Hope to do something about that commute over the next month...

Cool theme for your challenge. I've never watched that show (but I am partial to a bit of Dave Gorman's modern life is good(ish)) but it sounds like the sort of nonsense I like.

You know, I don't think I've ever won an award. I've got lots of medals from races but none that I've "won". I did win a creative writing competition at school, but I got a book voucher instead of a trophy, so does that still count?

So I realise it's Wednesday already and I haven't actually posted any challenge updates. To be honest I'm in a whirlwind of work stress at the moment and I'm massively behind on everyone's threads (sorry guys :(), and I seems to be so busy doing things I don't have any time to think about things.

Anyway, enough whining, Week Zero, The Story So Far...

Monday - I didn't hit snooze! I didn't hit snooze because my alarm didn't go off, because I failed to set it properly. Regular readers will know that this isn't the first time this has happened this year! Because of this I missed my workout in the morning, and as I had no time after work I go into this challenge having already technically failed my first goal!

Budget - £65.50 remaining

Tracking - 2,875 calories in - 4,210 calories burned = 1,335 deficit (allegedly, but I cannot see how Fitbit can be accurate with that calorie burn on a rest day)

Tuesday - Got up without hitting snooze and went out for my first challenge run :D . Runkeeper called for 2mi easy, had some headphone issues which messed with my pace consistency, first mile in 11'05", second in 9'23". Funnily enough the average of those two (10'14") is about the pace I was aiming for!

Budget - £60.36 remaining

Tracking - 3,208kcal in - 4,301 alleged kcal burned = 1,093 deficit

Stats after 0.2857 Weeks

Move! 1/2

Snooze! 2/2

Track! 2/2

Budget! 2/2

I know that boys vs girls caloric burn is different, but man, my best EVER day, I took a 25 mile bike ride in the morning and played a 90 minute hockey game and only tipped 3800 calories burned.

Or, wait.  Are those British calories?

It's worth checking out if you get a chance. I think Dave has a an online catch-up so there might be episodes on there. I do remember seeing that years ago. If you like that, then you'd like Modern Life too.

I don't remember what story won, I used to write quite a lot of science fiction and fantasy stories when I was younger. I started a new story about 6 months ago that I was planning to use in a challenge but I changed my mind. Maybe I should revisit that.

If you're having alarm and snooze issues, maybe you need The Rock Clock

I've won trophies/medals with teams as a kid, but the one that stands out in my mind the most is, all through grade school (Kindergarten 'til grade 6) we did Track and Field every spring. I wasn't a very fast runner and couldn't jump all that high, but one thing I could do was throw a ball really far. The softball throw was the only event I ever got a ribbon in. Through my entire elementary school career, I always competed against Janice Garten, who was a year older than me and who I admired very much, though I was way too shy back then to ever talk to an Older Kid. She was the only person who could throw farther than me, so she always got the 1st place ribbon, and I always got 2nd, and every year I was so determined to beat her and get that red ribbon, and every year I missed by just just a few metres. I was so excited for the year I entered Grade 6, because Janice had moved on to middle school, and I was finally going to be the best softball thrower and get the red 1st place ribbon I coveted so much! It was going to be my year!

And then they decided Track and Field would be replaced with Fun Day, which did not come with ball throwing or with ribbons.........................

No idea if there's a lesson in there or not, but I can tell you, to this day, I don't care one whit about trophies or medals. I want to accomplish The Thing, but I have no desire to be given a material object to mark my accomplishment of The Thing. Well, except for one Thing, I think I'll be proud when I get that material object...

It's a struggle, especially with the 10,000 members in the rangers.

Good title for a biography porn film? "Jarric and the 10,000 rangers"?

Following, I'm also already falling behind on everyone! :D

Good to have you! I've actually got everyone's new challenges in a OneNote to start reading, I'm still trying to get through the end of everyone's January!

Whoa!   Not to sound a panic alarm, but you burn that much on a rest day!?

Are you secretly a Kodiak bear?  :P

I know that boys vs girls caloric burn is different, but man, my best EVER day, I took a 25 mile bike ride in the morning and played a 90 minute hockey game and only tipped 3800 calories burned.

Or, wait.  Are those British calories?

Handle the stress first though Jarric.   Don't worry about the updating, if you are doing the DOING, then you have the priorities right until things chill out!

No, they're standard metric calories! To be fair I think Fitbit might just be lying though... I'm just going to eating loads for a couple of weeks and once the scale gives me some feedback I can find out how much it's lying by!

And thank you, hopefully they'll chill out soon :) .

Medals or trophies?  On my own no, but as part of a bigger group yes.  Many huge trophies were were won as part of Marching band in High School.  I'm on the hunt for a few little medals this year from some 5K races as I get back to running.

Ps: a two hour commute sucks!  I hope you find a way to reduce that time sink!!!

Oo, that's cool, what instrument did you play in the marching band? They're not much of a thing over here really, I've done plenty of marching and played in bands but never both at once! Good luck on finding some cool 5ks

I want this to be my alarm clock sound.

(Also, hi Jarric! Following!) I won a medal once as a senior in high school from the English department for being the best English student or embodying the spirit of it best or something like that.

That would be a very cool alarm clock. Wonder Woman might kill me if I did that though (she doesn't get up nearly as early as I am now).

So, did you embody the spirit of the English? Like, play host to an 18th century English ghost or...?

I love your goal format, very clean.

Last medal... hmmm... I was the queen of the three-legged races and the slow bicycle race (last person to cross the finish line without falling over wins) in elementary school. That might have been the last time I did anything where people kept score.

Thank you!

Slow bicycle race was a nightmare at school! Then again I never was much of a cyclist.

I really like the way you setup your challenges: What the goal is and exactly how you'll achieve it!

Also, not hitting snooze is really hard and part of my current challenge! Though I don't have to get up until 6.45 (thank goodness!)

Thanks!

Yeah, it's really something I need to work on. To be fair I could wake up at 6:45 and get to work on time, it's my decision to work out before work that gives me the totally disgusting start.

I'll try and give it a look.

Definitely give the challenge/story a go! We all love story theme'd challenges, and I suspect I'm not alone in loving sci-fi stories!

I've just looked and I can't get the Rock Clock *shakes fist at windows phone*. But again, don't think Wonder Woman would be too impressed being woked up to Dwayne Johnson saying "beep. beep. beep. beep. beep."

Is the Thing you'd be proud of a red ribbon? :panda:

Seriously, that does sound like a story with a moral to it. No idea what it might be though!

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.
