Big_Show
Second challenge of 2017, and it's going to be an interesting one! This challenge is all about uncertainty. Everything in my life is kind of up in the air at the moment because at some as-yet-undetermined point within the next month I shall be leaving the sandpit and moving back to Blighty. So my regular routine is all currently shot to hell, and as soon as I get back I will be cracking on with finding myself a flat (initially crashing on a sofa bed), getting recertified for work, establishing a new social life, finding dates - all the important stuff. When discussing this challenge with another nerd (thanks again for being an excellent sounding board, @Flex Luthor!) and wondering how I was going to be able to set any goals without them becoming horribly vague, I mentioned that what I really just need to do is look at the Level 50 version of Big Show and try to make the decisions that he would. So that is now the challenge theme - Future Me! I don't cope well with change & uncertainty, but the next four weeks (as well as a lot of the subsequent challenge after that in all likelihood) will be full of both so I need to concentrate on making the best decisions I can in the moment I'm faced with them. That said, I did come up with a few specifics: 1) Don't eat & drink like an arsehole I will be faced with several social occasions when I will likely be seeing people for the last time ever. I'm not realistically going to live like a monk or stick to a strict diet so I'm not aiming to continue my weight loss, but I can still prep meals whenever possible and make the best available choices where I cannot. Also, I'll be selling/gifting away most of my kitchen equipment, so meal prep will rapidly become impossible anyway. Don't want to resort to pizzas though. 2) Just. Get. Sh*t. Done. My instinctive reaction to tasks which are going to be difficult/awkward is to hide from them, usually by picking a far less important task and working on that instead. It's something I hate about myself and am constantly having to work against. I just plain cannot afford to let this happen this month. Procrastination will have direct, negative consequences and I need to keep pushing myself to leave my comfort zone as often as necessary until I'm safely out of the country. And then, when I'm back home, I'll really need to hit the ground running. I already have several lists of Things. I must Do All The Things. 3) Log every UK transation in YNAB As I'm studying with the OU I get a year's free membership with You Need a Budget and it received glowing recommendations from numerous nerds when I asked for opinions, so I have just done the initial setup of all my accounts and categories. I really do need to use this correctly and consistently, as I have historically been appalling at keeping track of my own finances. There won't be many at first, but once I'm back home I'll need to start logging all transactions, setting up me new regular bills for my flat, utilities, etc. and keeping a close eye on how much I'm actually spending. Especially seeing as I won't be able to work for at least the first month that I'm back home. 4) Review my Selfcare List at least once daily This really was a lifesaver in my last challenge so I am keeping it going. I wrote out a list of behaviours that I need to ensure I do daily/regularly, and some others which I need to avoid doing as often as possible. I have since then typed it out into Evernote so I can access it from my phone or whichever computer I'm currently using - I intend to read through it every day and compare it to the things I'm currently doing or planning to see if it changes my mind about any of them, or if I'm letting things slide. For anything else which does not fit into these categories, the big question to ask myself is - What would (lvl 50) Big Show do? Then to try and do it! 7 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. One day at a time. Big_Show
Might as well do an update for today, start as I mean to go on! 1) Don't eat & drink like an arsehole I ate well today, despite a large amount of coffee in various Starbucksesses (I drink a black Americano though, so bugger all calories involved). I enjoyed the curried chicken & beg that I prepped for dinners, so I am doing it for next week's lunches too. Very quick & easy to make, won't eat up much of my weekend. 2) Just. Get. Sh*t. Done. Holy crap. So productive today. I was off hunting one of the few remaining signatures today, and once I got that I was able to go tick loads of other things off my To Do list (including sneaking in a cheeky Chest, Shoulders & Triceps session at the gym too). 3) Log every UK transation in YNAB I ordered my NSU card so as to start claiming all those discounts as soon as I get home (including free Amazon Prime!). Paid for it on my credit card (it has many many protections for online purchases), and immediately followed the step-by-step guide to log it in YNAB. Success! 4) Review my Selfcare List at least once daily Read through and reoriented my plans for the weekend. Should be fun, but more downtime was needed. Went for a short run this evening to keep my legs ticking over before my 10k on Friday morning. I just set off for a steady run and kept finding the pace creeping up gradually as my legs were feeling rather fresh - I ended up doing 4.2M in 32:40 @ 742/mile average, which is the first non-race for which I've hit a sub-8:00/mile average in a very long time. Absolutely no idea what's going to happen in Friday's race. Think it will very much depend on whether I have someone just in front of me that I can try to keep up with. Either way, a nice restful evening tomorrow and a proper Yin Yoga session to iron out any kinks is exactly what I'll need first. 6 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. One day at a time. Big_Show
Made it though another week at work. Just 12 working days to go! 1) Don't eat & drink like an arsehole Today has involved extra carbs etc. as I shall need the reserves tomorrow. I have sensible food prepped for over the weekend though, so I'm not concerned. Dinner out tomorrow evening - meeting people at the Nobu, so I need to tick that place off my list of places to eat before I leave Doha! 2) Just. Get. Sh*t. Done. I have done everything today which needs to be done. Absolutely exhausted so I haven't ticked anything extra off, but I haven't slipped backwards at least. 3) Log every UK transation in YNAB Nothing else to track today. Did figure out the category in which I'm going to log all the various expenses involved in signing a lease for a flat when I get home though. 4) Review my Selfcare List at least once daily Gone through it again. Plans made for tomorrow accordingly. Tired now. Lazy night in front of TV. Many sleep. Much rest. 3 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. One day at a time. Big_Show
It has been a good day. Up early for the race, with my usual breakfast - three mugs of strong coffee and a bowl of chocolate cereal. Tried and tested, not gonna mess with the formula. Really nice area for a race. You did a lap round the bottom of the park, followed the footpath up and did a lap round the balcony-type area around the top of it, then did a stretch out along the road for a bit, before turning back and doing the whole thing in reverse. And as I was doing the 10k, I then did the whole thing again. I was not feeling particularly confident about the race beforehand as I was certain I had already put too much pressure on myself for it to go well, but on the way there I was listening to my pre-race playlist and I got the good butterflies in the stomach, so I decided to just go for it and see what happened. Went out hard from the gun and settled in nicely between two people who seemed to be setting a pace that felt good, if a little bit quick. Tried to check my GPS to check, but while running round the bottom of the park we repeatedly went underneath a concrete overhang which messed with the signal repeatedly. Got to the turnaround, headed back (high-fiving my friends on the way past) and got back to the startline. At which point my pacers both stopped - turns out they were both doing the 5k, which would explain the pace! Headed back out along the course again (more high-fives) and started having to give myself a bit of a talking to. Definitely noticced some hills that weren't there before, and as I came to the turnaround point for the second time my legs felt like they lost all energy and power. Stupid legs. But hey, that's what happens when you go off too quick. I checked my watch and the pace wasn't too far below my target, so I decided to just push on as hard as I could and not worry about it. These things happen, but I would still learn about my current state of fitness for the next time. So imagine my surprise when I was coming round the penultimate bend and looked at my watch to realise that a sub-45 was still on! Somehow my legs had receovered enough to find another gear and I threw everything I had at it, making sounds similar to those of a dying steam train. Actually had to slow down slightly before the end otherwise I would have been violently sick from the amount of effort I was putting in... Crossed the line in 44:52! Way better than I was expecting, and over 5mins faster than the 10k I did in October after Camp! Took 3rd place in the men's 10k (admittedly not a large field at all) and also found out that the course was more like 6.4M, so my time for the 10k will probably have actually been under 44mins instead! Definitely looking forward to my next 10k in May now, really gonna attack that one. Since then I have been utterly wiped out all day, and this evening I am going out for dinner & drinks with mates. Tomorrow I shall do ALL THE THINGS and end the week successfully. 8 Quote Big Show: Human Swift Hunter Respawning. One day at a time. Took 3rd place in the men's 10k (admittedly not a large field at all) and also found out that the course was more like 6.4M, so my time for the 10k will probably have actually been under 44mins instead! Definitely looking forward to my next 10k in May now, really gonna attack that one. Your recap explains so much about my FB trends this am. 5 Quote Rebel Scum - Current Challenge Link to comment
