Obstacle Racers, Assemble! [CLOSED]

Ok, cool. I think I might have 5 coming from my way (including me) so it might be easier if I get it on credit card and do the collection if you're happy?

If you're happy to do that, that would be fantastic. It would just be me and the hubs from my end. It would just be race entry and barrel purchase, people can sort their own camping out separately if they want to camp. Thanks Jarric!

Incidentally, there will be a nerdy trip to the Great British Beer Festival in August if anyone fancies it?

Oh, interesting. I might be up for that.

Lets start off with some introductions.

Let us know what race (or races) you are preparing for and what races, if any, you've done previously. If you've done too many races to list, you don't have to list them all! Maybe just let us know what was your most epic or memorable race.

And for a bit of fun, what's everyone's favorite obstacle and what obstacle do you loathe?

If you are preparing for your first ever race, what obstacle are you most looking forward to doing and what are you not looking forward to doing and why?

I did my first spartan sprint last August, and it was really fun! I'm doing another one next month with @Sylvaa. It's a winter race on a ski resort, so I have zero idea of what to expect. I'm also probably going to do a warrior dash sometime this year, but I haven't solidified plans for which one.

I don't know that I have a favorite obstacle...maybe ones where you hold a rope and walk up a wall or cliff? Those make me feel pretty cool. :D And just climbing over walls in general.

And my least favorite obstacle is...when I can't finish so I have to do burpees instead. I don't really hate any obstacles themselves (yet - I'm sure I'll meet one I hate soon enough.) I have trouble with the hanging ones like monkey bars and rings, and I haven't been able to figure out the rope climbing technique yet, but I don't hate them. Of all of the obstacles I've seen so far, the memory test makes me the grumpiest.

I've been summoned!

2015: Spartan Sprint

2016: Spartan Beast, Spartan Sprint <-- this Sprint was my favorite! I had so much fun going through with new people and encouraging them to finish!

2017: Spartan Winter Sprint, Spartan WV Trifecta Weekend, NY Warrior Dash, Maybe a Savage Race? Maybe a Tough Mudder? Maybe a Triathlon (okay, not an OCR).

I actually love the carries! They make me feel strong and capable. I'm working on improving my grip / upper body strength for the rings / monkey bars / etc... so hopefully by the end of the year I will not dislike them so much!

Ooh I'm so jealous for the TM in Ireland, if it were a month later I could do it with you guys! Oh well, maybe next year!

I have never done an OCR, but I'm signed up for the Boise Spartan Sprint (3-5 miles) in June and the Utah Spartan Super (8-10 miles at Nordic Valley, which is, ya know, a mountain and not a valley at all!) in August.

I'm most concerned about all of them...but specifically anything that requires me to bodily lift myself up by my arms. When it thaws a little I'm going to break out my parkour skills and practice going over walls, and I'd like to set up a rope climb somehow to practice that!

I don't know that I'm looking forward to any obstacle particularly, but I'm really looking forward to the team aspect of it and accomplishing this great feat of strength with other people!

Me too!!! I was thinking signing up for a race for overseas would help me stay dedicated to my training when I'm going through the move, you know? I'll know more about my moving plans after my Mister gets here tomorrow night, and I'll see if I can afford a short stay in England for the Beast! I reckon we can hostel it up and keep it cheap and cheerful!

200 obstacles in 20 miles? Yes please.

When/where is it in 2018? I want to!!

Also, did you do the season pass thing to get all  those spartan races in your sig? Also, that is some spread of locations, holy traveling batman!

I'm waiting for them to announce the 2018 date. Maybe @Charlie_Quinn knows if it's usually the same weekend. I've already informed the GF we will be taking a London vacation and I will be ruining it by racing.

I've had a Spartan annual pass for the past two years and am flirting with this year's purchase. They changed from a 365-day pass to a calendar-year pass and I have a decision to make. I need to do the analysis again for my schedule, last time I did it I came up with about a $25 difference in payment methods between buying two Trifecta passes, using my remaining Volunteer Credit to cover one race, and paying for one out of pocket vs. buying the pass. But I've changed my 2017 schedule since and I need to do the analysis again.

I'm not travelling nearly as much this year as last.

Barrel of Laps - It's the 28th of July, in Buckingham, just past Aylesbury and you are more than welcome to join us.

It's as many laps as you can manage carrying a 4.3kg barrel. It's a team event so if someone in the team wants to skip a few laps or drop out, it doesn't matter as long as someone is still going around the course with the barrel.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, BEER FESTIVAL!

Hellooooooo!!!!! *slides in waving trying to catch up with the party*

I'll be doing my first Tough Mudder this summer in Ireland, with @Jarric and @DarK_RaideR. There are two ways this goes - I absolutely love it and get addicted, or I find out I hate it and leave NF never to be seen again.

... who am I kidding. I'm the kind of person who will get lost in the woods, with 10% battery left and the sun going down, somehow make it home safe and will be telling everyone what a great adventure I had. There are very little changes that I'll hate this.

Also there is free beer at the end. A sure-fire way to get me happy is giving me free beer after an event where I spent so much energy I can freely drink it without worrying about putting on weight.

As of now I don't really know what obstacles I love and loathe, but I am absolutely dreading anything that has to do with hanging from stuff and moving. I am pretty sure those will end up with me in water.

EDIT: ok, am I the only one who regularly fails at tagging people? @Jarric @DarK_RaideR
I swear the tagging system is infuriating.

It's a nice idea, but the way it functions (typing some letters, then having to wait so you can click the right name) is infuriating.

I am ridiculously excited about our Tough Mudder

And then sometimes it doesn't load... for whatever reason.

Speaking about TMS, what's everyone's experience with the elettroshock therapy obstacle? I'm... not exactly frightened of it as I am just unable to figure out how to approach it.

I won't lie, if you get hit with a cable that has a high charge running through it, it does hurt, but not as much as you think it's going to. I got hit in the chin the last time and it was like get a slap to the face. Just run fast and don't stop! I'm not a fan of electroshock as an obstacle in general. It's not something you can ever train for use any skill to get through, it's just luck whether you'll get a shock or not.
