The Mini-Challenge: Rangers Gonna Ranger, Character Class Edition 1.0

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the Ranger mini-challenge for the February 12th to March 11th period.

I want you to take a moment before we begin to think about what kind of attributes your real-life Character class might have (be they Ranger, Monk, or something else entirely not covered by Nerd Fitness Guilds), what abilities they might hone and possess, and which skills or techniques they might focus on to aid in their adventures.  With that in mind, browse through the details and rules below to join in on this most Rangerly of mini-challenges for the next challenge period.

20150608_BehindtheScreens_Header.jpg?ito

THE RULES

Participation is entirely voluntary, this mini-challenge has only as much impact on your challenge as you decide.

Based on the format presented below, you will design a goal of your own choosing to suit each Feat, attempting to Ranger your way through that goal during the course of this mini-challenge.  An example is provided below to give you a feel for the nature of each particular Feat.  These weekly Feats will be randomly selected each week and you may check-in here to share your accomplishments and successes with your fellow participants.

Remember:  Don’t sweat the little things.  This is an optional and additional mini-challenge running alongside your personal challenge.  Step out of your comfort zone for a moment or keep your mini-challenge Feats in line with your current challenge goals.  It’s up to you.  Have fun!

  • Strength Feat:  Whether your truly identity with the Ranger class, or another more strength-based archetype like Warrior or Barbarian, strength is of utmost importance.  Members around here are strong and can regularly be found pushing for a new PR, hunting for that next push-up or pull-up milestone, swinging a sledgehammer or working with the next heavier kettlebell.

  • Ranger Feat:  Like any class-based video game your character class determines your abilities; in real life the skills we are born with can similarly be expanded upon over the course of a lifetime.  Use this week to build up your repertoire of skills by either working on a weakness or displaying your prowess with a technique you’ve already mastered.

  • Distance Feat:  Love it or hate it, terrain must needs be covered from time to time.  Whether your chosen locomotion is running, rucking, swimming, or rowing (among others), this is your speed or endurance based feat; select something that covers major distance or serves to improve your overall conditioning and fitness.

  • Recovery Feat:  Most characters feature some form of self-healing, rested experience from sitting still or visiting an Inn, or health point regeneration boosted by food and beverage.  For the final Feat of the mini-challenge we will look back on what we have accomplished, celebrate our victories, and focus on rehabilitating our bodies and minds using yoga or stretching, ROMWOD, meditation, or any healing techniques you prefer.

EXAMPLES

  • Strength Feat:  Add one additional weightlifting workout to my schedule this week.
  • Ranger Feat:   This week I will practice my quilting techniques by dedicating 30 minutes on 3 days.
  • Distance Feat:  Complete two sessions of Couch To 5k this week.
  • Recovery Feat:  Active recovery to heal my aching muscles by adding a 5 minute stretching routine every morning.

OPTIONAL SIDE QUEST

Let us know a little bit about your real-life Character; who are they, what kind of class it might be (even though we're squarely within the Ranger guild, or visiting the Rangers, here), which skills and attributes you want to work on that will bring you closer to this ideal, any particular inspiration that drives you toward this paragon, etc.

Consider this an entirely optional but wholly amusing deviation from the usual highway of health and fitness, putting the nerd back in Nerd Fitness for a couple of minutes to remind us why we all originally found our way here.

For inspiration and an idea of what I'm talking about, take a peek at the Incipient Order of Taggers and consider tagging your challenge (and future challenges) with a tag that represents your character inspiration!

WEEK 1

quest.png

QUEST:  The First Step.

Every adventure begins by putting one foot in front of the other and this quest is no different.  Before you can start slaying ratmen and boars in the Enchanted Forest, first you have to put your best foot forward and enter the starting zone!  Rally your elemental familiar or wild companion, summon your mystical spells and enchantments, or sharpen your blades and arrows, because we've got some space to cover yet; your mini-challenge begins with your DISTANCE FEAT.

WEEK 2

300px-Warchief's_Command_Board_(PNG).png

QUEST:  A Path Less Traveled

If the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, it takes skill and grit to stay the course and see it through to its conclusion.

It takes tremendous force of will, imagination beyond the average, and a courageous heart... but above all, a strong mind to survive these sorts of adventures.  The Red Mountains beyond the Enchanted Forest are full of all manner of orc, ogre, and demonic worgs.  You'll need every last drop of heroic vigor to endure the rugged landscape: upgraded spellcasting abilities, the most ferocious of wild comrades, enigmatic enchantments, and castle-forged steel for your axe, sword, or spear, but perhaps most importantly - your raw skill and talents to survive the night.

Your mini-challenge continues with your RANGER FEAT.

WEEK 3

Your mini-challenge advances with your STRENGTH FEAT.

WEEK 4

chest.gif

QUEST:  All's Well As Ends Well.

An adventure unimagined, fraught with harrowing heights, perhaps a failure or two, but thrilling successes.

At last we've made it to the end of our challenges and a resolution to our mini-quest here. You have grown as an individual, realized more of your full potential, and developed as an adventurer, a Ranger. Your can catch your reflection in a racing river, see the confidence in your gait. Feel the twinge of soreness in new muscles, and race from point to point without the same weariness as once before. Bask in the spoils of your accomplishments and rest, recover, recuperate, for your adventures are far from done with.

They are merely beginning...

Your mini-challenge concludes, for now, with your RECOVERY FEAT.

This sounds really fun!

I've been a ranger in every challenge but my end goal has always been to level up to the Advanced class of Hunter

Strength Feat: Handstands, while you might not need to do this on an adventure, it can definitely build up some core strength!
Ranger Feat: Woodworking. Maybe bushcraft, or making of tools or carvings. A ranger should know what to do with local resources!
Distance Feat: Rucking at work. All adventurers carry a pack of essentials right?
Recovery Feat: Meditation. How am I supposed to hunt if I can't be still?

Week 1: Distance

Rucking at work!

[X] Monday - I didn't check before i got here so i'll be using my regular work pack.

          Weight: ~ 3lbs

           Distance: 2 mi

[X] Tuesday - Still don't have a weight but i got a bigger backpack (plus it's got a lot of metal on it.)

          Weight: ~5lbs

          Distance: 2.14 mi

[X] Wednesday - added in a small 5lb dumbell! This is probably the weight i should have started with haha. Difficult but not painful.

          Weight: ~10lbs

          Distance: 3.71 mi

[X] Thursday - Maintained the same weight.

          Weight: ~10lbs

          Distance: 2.8 mi

[X] Friday - Maintained the same weight.

          Weight: ~10lbs

          Distance:  3.06 mi

DISTANCE CHALLENGE COMPLETE!

Week 2: Ranger

Making something out of wood!

[X] Sunday - I kinda lucked out in that i did a little prepwork for this since it dried up a little.  So i sliced off a bit of some wood in the back yard. I think i may try to make a kuksa. But if i cant manage that we'll see.

[X] Monday - Realized the project I was gonna do wasn't gonna work. Picked up a knife and some basswood since I haven't carved before and settled on a spoon.

[X] Tuesday - Carved as I could until my wrists hurt too much.

[X] Wednesday - I managed.  Bloody carpel tunnel!

[X] Thursday -  Made some progress today! I used my axe to get rid of some of the extra wood

[X] Friday - I only got a few cuts in but I tried.

[X] Saturday - Made some progress on the bowl (even though I couldn't keep to my outlines...)
I ended up unable to finish the piece. Maybe half done... I'll post pictures at some point.
RANGER CHALLENGE - HALF POINTS!

Week 3: Strength

Handstand Practice!

[X] Sunday - I learned my lesson and did a bit for both my remaining challenges just in case! I went through all the exercises except for the wall walk. (I don't have a wall to walk on rn :T )

[X] Monday - Same thing all the stretches, the hollow body exercise seemed easier.

[X] Tuesday - Up until this point the stretches felt like they were helping my carpal tunnel. After these stretches I may have pushed too far bc most of my left hand became numb and the tips of a few fingers on my right hand.

[X] Wednesday - I woke up with the same numbness. Slightly less on the left but the same on the right. After the exercises I could feel my fingertips! ... for a few seconds. But my wrists feel a bit nicer (well not my right but my left does!)

[  ] Thursday

[  ] Friday

[  ] Saturday

Class: Ranger

Subclass: Barbarian aka Primal Shaman

The me who is more than a mother of two and stay-at-home mom, she's driven. Working towards being that link that invites others to join in when movement is called for, she's kind and funny and invites other's to laugh about themselves and to be kinder with themselves and others. She is also driven to be inclusive, open borders in her own neighborhood. There's enough people with a migration background around, and language is a barrier we rarely see opened. She is driven to be that person, the one who addresses people in their own language, be it English, German Sign Language, or any number of others (she's a polyglot by choice), and includes them when they weren't sure if they were welcome in the first place.

For Feats

STRENGTH

Pushups. Definitely. Will test my max and go from there.

RANGER

Approaching people who know all the things about the licenses I am and I want to get and ask them about this and that.

What do I do if "Fitness und Gesundheitssport" is not all I want to be doing, what if I want to do things with music too, like step aerobics and/or bellydancing?

Do I need a full additional license (360€ + 7 weekends of classes), is an additional practical course enough (240€ + 5 weekends) or might I be able to start out with the license I have (=am getting right now) and build onto it with "Fortbildungen"?

Find someone to ask about qualifications for becoming a personal trainer and how to go about getting them.

HEALING

Quiet time for sitting down with a book and a cup of tea three times this week. Plus an extra session of yoga somewhere.

DISTANCE

Do two runs this week, weather depending in my fav park or along the coast.

You can get a bit of info from my sig, but Infinity is a Barladin, one who spreads the word of her God to those who will listen, via the form of stories, voice, art, and words. Adaptable and quick, she never lets her message of good will slacken, training herself so she can also combat those forces of evil, a deft hand with a spell or sword.

Class : Paladin

Subclass : Missionary

Strength Feat: Work on my core. The weakest part of my body, I struggle with it and have a bad tendency to avoid it. For this feat, I shall hold the plank for 15 seconds, and increase the time by five every day. If necessary, I will split this up.
Ranger Feat: I shall finish an A2 painting. Depending on the week, the painting will either be for my mother, or for an aunt.
Distance Feat: Go for two 5k runs, or one 8k! My ParkRun has been slacking, and I am actually trying to BUILD distance and speed. I'm trying to get to a 10k, so for that week, I shall run on a Wednesday and Saturday.
Recovery Feat: Do at least twenty minutes of yoga for two of the days. I struck this one from my challenge because it was too difficult at the current moment to do every day, but twice for one week sounds manageable, and I look forward to it!

Sounds like fun! This will let me get in the side quest I wanted for the challenge.

Class: Fighter

Subclass: Healer

I identify first and foremost as an archer, obviously, but moreso in the context of a hunter, than a fighter. I have also studied Kinesiology and am beginning a career in Pedorthics, so I have chosen Healer as my subclass at the moment. I believe as I grow, my subclass may change to reflect that.

Strength Feat: I will add ten additional inverted rows to my strength training days to begin training to complete a pull up.

Ranger Feat: I will add two archery training sessions for competing in league.

Distance Feat: As I added a day of swimming for my challenge, I'll push from 600 m to 1 km for this feat.

Recovery Feat: For this feat I will have a sauna, followed by a stretching session.

Guild: Ranger

Class: Healer / Magician, Bard

Subclass: Scholar

I am a Ranger who is cross-training as a Healer / Magician. In real-ish life, that means that I am studying and training to use words as healing tools for the mind and heart, and as weapons for exposing lies and corruption. In my spare time, I like playing with my tools, making me something of a Bard as well. Rather than drawing on dark or inward-looking arts to learn how to use my word-magic, I am training with the Christian Clerics, studying the Holy Scriptures and learning from wordsmiths of the physical world.

As a Ranger, my specialties are stamina and functional strength, meaning I specialize in walking (often while carrying a heavy rucksack) and lifting weights. My goal, rather than to become exceptionally strong or fast, is to develop strength in areas applicable to daily life - ability to lift things (or people), climb many stairs (or rugged hillsides), walk for long distances, and eventually progress to skills like running and chin-ups/pull-ups.

------------

Strength Feat: I will complete 30 backpack squats wearing a 15-pound backpack. (A 90-second break will be allowed in between sets of 10.)

Ranger Feat: I will draft a complete outline of a short story and identify one place I can submit it when it's written. (Storycraft is hugely important for preserving Ranger lore and raising morale on long, difficult missions.)

Distance Feat: I will ride a stationary bicycle for 15 minutes at my next workout session instead of a stair-climbing component.

Recovery Feat: I will crochet a bunch of hanging hearts for my friend whose son is in the NICU and mail them to her, to hang around his room.

Sub Class: Battlemage

One one hand, a fighter relying on every means available to her to tear down obstructions in her path. On the other, a would-be scholar of sorts, a collector of useful skills and knowledge.

Strength Feat: I will have something to carry on my daily walks, whether it comes in the form of a log, rock, or weighted backpack

Ranger Feat: Study the 'Ranger Library' (a tiny collection of wilderness survival/bushcraft skills/etc books) daily and put at least three skills to practice (knots, navigation, fire starting, anything like that).

Distance Feat: This will be highly weather dependant and therefore a final decision will be made on the week in question.

Recovery Feat: Mind and body recovery: Fifteen minutes per day meditation plus three post-work stretching sessions.

I'm definitely in for this one!

Class: Ranger Scholar/ Bard

So glad to bring some tags back, but I'm tweaking it a bit. My character is one of duality. A ranger with an innate love of the wild, and found wandering in the forests, fells and around the lakes of the wilderness as often as modern life permits. This side of Rhovaniel craves adventure, works to increase her strength and courage, and takes as inspiration such mighty figures as Aragorn and, for a real life example, Bear Grylls. Yet the other side, equally cherished, is to be found within doors, surrounded by books, and with a means of writing at her disposal. This is the scholar who delves deeply and broadly for knowledge within the past, both for the love of the knowledge itself, and in the hope that she may attempt to use the lessons of history as a force for positivity in the present.

Strength Feat:  It's time to hold my body weight, and since my new bar came in the post, on this week, I will do a total of 1 minute of bar hangs (cumulative) each day.

Ranger Feat:  For the scholar, I can never know enough. 30 minutes set aside each day of this week to research and look into potential topics for the Masters by Research I wish to complete.

Distance Feat: Endurance. That week, I will add an extra .5 to 1 km to my run, or an extra 10 minutes to my swim/other form of cardio.

Recovery Feat:  A calmer mind makes for a more efficient ranger. I will meditate/practise mindfulness, visualisation or some similar form of mental stillness and relaxation at least twice during this week.

Not sure how I'll go balancing this and my first challenge but I'm intrigued and willing to give it a try.

Strength Feat: 1x10 push ups each day. As many on the floor as I can manage (generally 1-3) and then the rest of the set elevated on a step.

Ranger Feat: Knit a teddy bear for my nephew who is due to arrive in 6 weeks.

Distance Feat: Climb the 1000 steps in the local national park.

Recovery Feat: Spend a few hours this week caring for myself; ideally with a long hot bath.

As for my character, to be honest I'm still feeling it out. The closest I can come up with at this stage is "Woodsman". Eagle is working towards being completely independent and able to survive and thrive in the middle of nowhere. I like the idea of being able to live without being connected to the grid (though I would definitely miss the internet and all my NF friends).

I study and research the world around me from a lab... well, currently I teach others about doing that, but I want to research. I also want to be outside venturing and putting that study into a practical setting. I am one big ball of confuzzled at the moment.

  • Week 1: Distance Feat:  Going to hit the pool after doing some much needed yard work this week, weather permitting for both.

  • Strength Feat:  Get in some daily hang time ~ 10 seconds from any low hanging branch. I want to work up to a pull up so I can climb trees again.

Class: Ranger

Sub-Class: Viking Conqueror

I'm a very large English man with enough weight to throw around, I am new to the gym and fitness lifestyle mind you; so throwing in a few goals during my usual workouts can't hurt, shoot for the moon!

  • Strength Feat:  Darn those weaknesses in your game, slay them! - I've been having trouble with my standing overhead dumbbell presses, finish all your sets; and if that's achieved...  Maybe pick up a heavier set.
  • Ranger Feat: Work on your cooking big man! - I recently started a paleo diet, but I'm a pretty bad cook (doh) so let's fix that by cooking at least one tasty paleo meal this month.
  • Distance Feat: Music in, Ride like the wind - I enjoy using the exercise bike for warming up and cooling down during my sessions, so let's push it up a notch and finish on a distance high note - Let's say 2 miles for now, if I beat that... then excellent!
  • Recovery Feat: Keep that mental health in a good place, but more specifically; work on my sleeping, set an early(ish) sleeping time and get a few more hours of beauty sleep than you usually get.

Class: Ranger

Subclass: Shapeshifter - Kyuubi no Kitsune (Nine-Tailed Fox)

Strength Feat: 20 shoulder press with my 7kg-dumbbell, holding it with both hands (I've noticed I can't do 10 on a single arm anymore. Could it some weeks ago)

Ranger Feat: My current favourite song is "How far I'll go" from the film Moana. Since I'm learning Polish now I will learn the words from the Polish version.

Distance Feat: If the weather allows it, I want to go to school by bike. That are 10 km each route on 2 days per week. If the weather doesn't allow it, I will do at least one 20 km bike ride.

Recovery Feat: Go to the swimming bath at least once and just enjoy swimming.

WEEK 1

So for myself this looks like...

Your subclass reminds me of my DnD half orc barbarian Duunack, he wrestled a Warg then paid a beast trainer an exorbitant fee to have it trained. Our party now has a battle Warg.

This sounds like something that might happen to me in real life actually.

Class: Khajit Ranger

Subclass: Pirate

Strength Feat: 1x10 pushups daily. I fucking HATE pushups. But I recognize that they are an excellent all-around exercise, so I will clench my teeth and knock out ten a day for this feat.

Ranger Feat: Practice guitar for 15 minutes every day. I recently signed up for once-a-week guitar lessons, which I am really enjoying - practicing at home, however, has not been steady.

Distance Feat: I0,000 steps every day. I struggle to meet this goal on a daily basis due to my sit-down job, so I will commit to an extra lunch time walk to make it happen.

Recovery Feat: I will do something nice for myself every day for this feat. Not just "collapse on the couch and binge Netflix", either: I will do something that requires me to do something that is actually GOOD FOR ME.
