Magicman's 1st Challenge

I've been on a roll since the holidays with my training and diet, so I'm hoping to use this challenge to reenergize myself to keep heading in the right direction toward my goal of 10% body fat/185 pound body weight. I currently stick strictly to my diet during the week but don't pay too much attention during the weekends. I'm not horrible, but there is damage being done that I'd like to clean up.

I have several projects happening in my house that will need attention this year, so I'm including a couple of tasks that need to be done by March 10, which is our carpet installation date.

I have decided to give (mild) minimalism a try, so I'm starting small and trying to reduce my wardrobe a bit. I don't know that I need 20 workout tees, hilarious as some of them were when I bought them.

Finally, I have taken a couple of years off from performing a feature length comedy and magic show, but have decided to get back up on stage and do my thing in 2017. I have my new show written, I just need a venue and a date so I can motivate myself to start rehearsing.

Specific goals are:

1) Track calories and macros on weekends.

2) Paint the wall that I forgot to paint and vacuum/mop the entire floor on March 9th to be ready for carpet installation on March 10th.

3) Create an "Essential Wardrobe List" and sort wardrobe into On The List/Donate/Discard piles.

3a) Donate/Discard anything not on the List.

4) Contact 5 venues for pricing and availability in October, and schedule site visits ASAP.

Building up the junk happens way too fast. I like the line that goes a little something like "I've concluded that the are people living in my house whom I haven't met yet" because of all the laundry/stuff in the closets lol.  Following!

You're not kidding! I counted my dress shirts this morning: 24. What the hell? Why?

All those shirts allow me put off doing a load of dress shirt laundry for 3 weeks. I'll then be overwhelmed with about 2 hours of ironing ahead of me. I think I can reduce this to 8 without any issues; 5 work shirts and 3 shirts for magic gigs.

My problem is I come from a family that keeps EVERYTHING. So I'm swimming against the tide a bit.

Thanks for that quote, it should be on the welcome mat to my house.

My mom learned from having three boys that dress nicely that if you have the shirt immediately after drying, they look just about as good as having been pressed.

Brief and early update:

I hit a bodyweight milestone today of finally having less than 20#'s to hit my goal weight. I haven't been within 20 since May 2011 after my first paleo challenge, and the difference this time is I feel like I'm just getting started, not burned out!

I also made my first contact for a venue. 1/5, unless this one fits my needs and availability in which case I'll consider it a special item unlock and consider this portion of the challenge complete.

I just moved (see: may 2016) and I still haven't unpacked all my dress clothes. Guess what I'm donating to the rescue mission.

Finishing out week 2, here's where I stand:

1) Tracked all weekend. I have been cheating on weekends without tracking, so I was likely 500+ calories above what I should have even on a cheat day. So I cheated but still stayed in a deficit due to tracking, and I felt great! Weekend 2, here I come.

2) Painting is not done, but I've been busy getting other things done down there. I'll have the painting done either Sunday or next weekend, though.

3) I have made my list of essential items but haven't pulled the trigger on sorting my wardrobe yet. I think I need to break it down further into work clothes/casual clothes/workout clothes, etc and tackle one at a time. Actually, yeah, I'll do this.

4) I've reached out to 2/5 venues so far. Both are ignoring me, which is fine because it helps me learn to better deal with rejection. It's a start, but I'd like to lock this down and start working toward that big show sooner rather than later.

Onward...

I like magic a bit.  I'm more into the circus arts with juggling and devil sticks, and have gotten pretty handy with that, but I'm also working on the sleight of hand.  I'm good with a piece of candy or a coin, which is great on the nieces and nephews.  But I'm big on all the performance arts.  I hope you get some good venues nailed soon!

Have you tried contact juggling? I find that hypnotic to watch but I haven't taken the time to learn yet.

I hadn't even heard of it until you asked.  Looks like fun!

Some updates:

Weekend tracking has been a breeze. I'm glad I made the change finally.

Basement is done and ready for the carpet ahead of schedule. It was cool having this challenge in the back of my mind to motivate me to go down there and get it done when I wanted to sit on the couch and slam my face into a bowl of popcorn. I'm actually going beyond what was planned since it's so clean right now and painting areas that needed touching up but weren't high on my list of to-do's.

Sorted out a ton of my clothes and I've got things ready to donate. Had to throw out a bunch of workout shirts because years of crossfit has essentially wrecked them, but I had way too many anyway. For my work and gig clothes, I've essentially cut my closet down by 2/3! It looks really peaceful now and not like I'm trying to have The Kingpin's closet from Daredevil season 1 stuffed into my tiny armoire.

I sent all 5 feelers out to different venues. In the meantime, I booked several other gigs while asking around if people had contacts at any of these venues, so that's a win regardless of whether or not these places contact me back.

So, I guess that means Challenge Complete! I'm so glad I did this challenge, and joined this site. I can't wait to jump into my next one! Thanks for the kinds words, everyone.

Way to smash the challenge.

I've found weekend tracking  very helpful. The weekend is when it is easiest to let things slide, so it's nice to have the accountability.
