Congratulations on adopting Mystic! How is Tarp dealing with a new kitty in the household?

I'm glad that you are seeing light at the end of the tunnel at work. How are you going to use your newly restored time when the season is over?

My condolences on the stress at home and in your community. I wish there were easier answers to both types of problems. Let me know if you want a sympathetic ear.

One thing I am failing to wrap my brain around is how, when I do everything the way I'm 'supposed' to do it (according to?) I still manage to gain weight rather than lose...no it's not muscle, my clothes do not fit any better, I'm honest about everything I put in my mouth and working out for an hour 3 to 4 days a week...it's no different than when I do nothing and it's very discouraging....I've checked hormone levels, thyroid, etc...all fine...only thing wonky is my vitamin D levels and my liver enzymes...not sure if that would have anything to do with it but this has been over the last several years and everything I try has the opposite effect of what I want it to have...I'm beyond frustrated...

In my head I keep saying I need to ignore the scale and such and just do what I enjoy and makes me feel good...but that's difficult when I want to break down and cry every time I look in the mirror...I can't stand to look at pictures of me from 6 years ago, or heck, even 3 years ago...wouldn't exactly say I was healthy then but I think a combination of what I did then and what I do now...I know whatever I'm doing now isn't working so I need to rethink it...On January 2nd I'll be here 4 years...always thought I'd be closer to my goals by now, not further away.

I used to be the person that went out and had fun, I need to do this again. The job that I had (restaurant management) left little time for eating (mostly done on my feet) and a lot of walking/moving, I need to do this again

I used to be the person who didn't worry about what they ate, not saying that was the best thing for me to do because a lot of it was junk, but maybe I don't need to obsess as much as I do now...

I used to only eat once or twice a day, when I was hungry....and stop when I was full...I need to do this again

I used to be the person who worked a 12 hour shift, got her homework done, and still made time to do the things she really wanted to as long as her schedule allowed...if it didn't then I didn't feel bad about using the time to catch up on sleep...maybe I need to do this again as well...

1. Move every day. Back then they didn't have fitness trackers, but I was on my feet 10-12 hours a day so I know I got a workout in. I have a desk job now but I have a lot of leeway, during season this will be easier but during the off season it's too easy to sit at my desk and not do much. I want to start getting at least 10,000 steps a day, and one day of kickboxing a week.  The first two weeks I will start with 6,000 steps (5k distance) and increase from there.

2. Eat when hungry, stop when full. Counting calories and carbs is not working for me. I need to stop obsessing over having breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I'll eat when I get hungry, if that means I don't eat breakfast then so be it. If lunch isn't until 2pm that's fine. The only thing is it has to be real food, not fast food, not junk. Mostly veggies and some protein.

3. Beyond checking in here (which I still intend to stick with 3x a week) I need to stop making plans and canceling them for whatever reason...be it my wife is working late, I talk myself out of it, etc...work obligations notwithstanding...or if sleep really is an issue (which should not be the case before season).

This was posted on my (then) challenge thread 12/26/17, I figured it's as good a end of year wrap up as any...

Just realized in five days I will have been here five years...lot of fives in the upcoming year...

One update to this is my Vitamin D and liver enzymes were back to normal at my checkup last year (reminder that I need to schedule checkup for this year) not sure why other than I take Vitamin D every day, no idea what that has to do with liver enzymes?

Had to give up kickboxing due to the repetition, was causing a lot of pain in my neck (literally)

Not sure I actually 'met' any of the three goals I laid out for myself last year...I've improved lately on all of them but not the year long goals I had laid out by any stretch.

1. Move every day...haven't done this much at all. been doing good at getting over 5,000 steps a day a couple times a week in the last two or three months but need to recommit.

2. The last,, 5 or 6 (has it really been that long?) I've been doing morning smoothies during the week, and then only when I'm hungry. Weekends I've been waiting until I feel hungry which most of the time ends up being early afternoon. I've been doing good at eating mostly plant based, whole foods, except at night when the other half wants a snack and want's me to join her :( (because ice cream is yummy)

3. Been doing a bit better at this, to the point that she's getting upset at me going without her. I don't sign her up for 5k's with me anymore because she works weekends now...of course that means many times I don't sign up either. This is overall not bad because after closing on the house we got a bit overextended and need to catch up on some bills so don't need to spend extra on unnecessary extras.

So...recommitting to a few things and changing a few others...

1. I've been doing better at getting to the gym but I am going to do it three times a week, with flexibility for work/extenuating circumstances. In those cases I will go as many times as possible. Either taking walking breaks or walking on the treadmill to get to at least 8,000 steps a day, every day,  with running intervals every other day will be part of this and separate from gym time, that time will be used for weights and stuff I'm unable to do at home.

2. Continue to listen to my hunger, not my appetite! Eat real food, plan menus ahead of time to make life easier. Continue to prep breakfast/lunch/snacks for the week and during season

3. Live life, don't stress over it. Continue working towards the three year plan.

4. Drink water, get sleep, reduce cortisol production (I stress a LOT over bullshit I can't control)

This time of year there are a million programs to help you meet goals available out there, and if you know where to look some of them are even free! (if you can avoid falling for the sales pitches) Two of them I've looked at involve a Girls Gone Strong Mini Course and Phit -n-Phat workshop. A lot of it is common sense but sometimes you have to hear/read things several times before it sinks in. One of them involves setting goals and breaking down why you want to meet these goals and how is doing it going to help you in life, then being honest one what exactly you're willing to do to meet this goal. Then on what you're willing to do how willing are you to do it on a scale of 1-10, anything less than an 8 gets eliminated, save it for later to see if you're more willing then.

My overall goal right now is to lose 50 lbs by my 50th birthday. this is in 10 months (almost to the day  ) That's 5 lbs a month. So in this, my 5th year at NF, my goal is to lose 5 lbs a month for 10 (that's 2x5) months to meet my goal. (all the 5's :D )

Anyone want to join me in this endeavor?? (I need all the support I can get, I have none at home)

That's pretty hardcore. Same time next year, looking behind, do you think you'll say "Done! What's next?" (Yes! Being a totally acceptable answer.) I tend to set myself smaller goals and work with smaller steps (which may mean that you'd have only lost 20 lbs by your birthday, sure, so no perfect solution here).

I'll be cheering for you. Don't drop 3. and 4. :)

Living life as a Druid is about walking with the beasts. It's about being scared, looking your fears in the eyes and going on anyway. Dread doesn't go away, you just learn to know it. It's still a beast, it still has fangs, but you walk among it.

Interesting way to sort things. I may try that.

You bet, I'm happy to join you. I am not trying to lose 50lb, so we can come up with something relevant. Support makes a huge difference and we've been on the same team most of those five years.

I know it contrasts a decision you mentioned earlier in the same post, but I think you need to add at least one 5km race to truly include all the 5's ;)

Hardcore is what I need right now, smaller goals has only gotten me 5 years older and 20 lbs heavier :(

Those are the most important two ;)

Always glad to have you along, weight loss not a requirement :D

You and Teirin were two of the first people I found on this amazing journey, I'm still trying to wrap my head around it being five years  Here's to the next five :)

It's already scheduled and paid for back during season, it's on January 12th, appropriately titled "Best Damn Race" <_< forgot to post it!

Of course the reason I want to start interval running is to be able to run a whole one by the same goal date as the rest of these...I envision myself running laps around the cruise ship deck in minimal amounts of running clothes

Seven years...(and one day) ago I was one of those "New Year, New Me" joiners of NF...things looked a lot different back then but the support and encouragement remains the same. I can't imagine trying to  do this without the amazing people I've met here.

Since starting NF I've lived in three states, and had five jobs. I've also had a hysterectomy with a cholecystectomy, (not sure how much that counts since it was five days after joining) completed a Masters degree, gotten married, had two kids graduate high school, had a child join, spend six years, and leave the Navy, struggled(ing?) with some relationship issues, became a grandma, tried to start various side gigs, some more successful than others  and started 69 challenges. (not sure we can say I've finished them all, but I did start them :P) Oh, and let's not forget relearned how to ride on two wheels and did I really don't remember how many 5k's.

I'm 37.8 lbs. heavier than when I joined, 42.8 lbs. heavier than I was at my first challenge (I lost 5 lbs. doing a whole 30) of course we're almost two years into a pandemic as well, prior to that I was almost to the same stats as when I joined. Living in an RV for a while contributed to the gain that time...I've learned a whole lot about what doesn't work, and what works for me, so once again I'm going to commit myself to doing that...I've had a lot of changes recently in my life so I need some stability and routine now that things have settled down. (for me personally, the world is still a dumpster fire) 59bois.jpg

I hope 2022 doesn't take it as a challenge

So I realized as I was looking at what I wrote last year to recap this year, that last year I'd been here 8 years, not 7,

Most of this is still the same, except for adding another grandchild, and 2 more companies as 'side gigs', and bought a new bike. D and I are working on the relationship/marriage even though certain aspects are very difficult (she thinks she's asexual, I disagree due to certain reasons, but she's definitely adverse...while I am the complete opposite) I would like to focus on going back in to therapy for this, she has to be willing to work on it though, not just pay it lip service like before.

Otherwise I'm focusing on me (again) I found an eating plan that works for me, once again I'm recommitting to the workouts that worked so well before, I lost 11 lbs before the holidays with this and the help of finding a nurse practitioner that does HRT the way that works best for me. We won't go into how much I regained over the holidays 😝 I've joined a few groups and have plans to ride a lot more in the coming year, there is a milage challenge in one of the groups and I want to have a respectable number at the end of it, I have a personal goal of 2500 miles, let's see how close I can get! That's almost 50 miles a week, definitely doable.

I need to learn how to take vacation time in 2023, I took the last week of 2022 and still spent part of each day at my desk...I've been told that if I don't that I'll cap out and won't accrue anymore, which is basically giving them time...can't let that happen! I love how this company encourages work/life balance but just need to learn how to practice it better.

10 Years...

I went back and read my first battle log from that time, got a little down on myself when I realized I'd gone up 30 lbs. from then. To be fair that's todays weight, prior to the holidays I was 8-10 lbs. less than today., which was less than I was last year when I didn't weigh in until the 13th. TBF, I know weight isn't the only measurement, but everything else has gone up too :(

Last year has been tough on me emotionally, thankfully a lot of that was resolved before the new year, I'm not usually one for new year new me stuff but it's applicable this year. I need to find a new job, with other health issues I'm going to focus on losing weight and improving the other health markers that need to be. We're going to be using Factor for meals so neither of us have to worry about cooking or meal prep. We'll reassess that after a month or two and see if it's beneficial.

I'm looking forward to this year and getting back to what I love doing without the stress of the last four.
