Einar
In the words of Bugs Bunny, "I should have taken a left at Albuquerque." A few months ago I gained a couple injuries and took some time off to recuperate, then I let that spiral out of control for 5 months of very little activity and negative progress towards improving my health. Well that changes now. In my constant efforts to not bite off more than I can chew I am going to change my training methods to remove potential excuses before they arise. My goals will be simple and revolve around a basic start in endurance, strength, and food. Endurance: As much as I want to go out and work on running because it lines up with my ultimate goals, at my weight and cardio condition right now that is not feasible. So 2x/week I will ruck with my dogs and aim for either a faster pace or a longer distance each week. Strength: I love lifting weights. Unfortunately I have found that I let weight training take up most of my attention to the detriment of everything else so I determined that I will have to earn my way back to the Iron. To do so I will start with body weight work 3x/week. Food: My girlfriend does most of the cooking at home so I'm not always in control of the food available and she is not 100% on board with healthy eating habits. So for this goal, I will strive to take over cooking most days by planning and preparing meals I can put in a crock pot to cook while I sleep so that we have food ready when she gets home from work. On days that this doesn't happen (even on days that it does honestly) I will focus on portion control. That way even when my nutrition isn't optimal, I will be working towards maintaining a healthy calorie intake. Optional: In place of my endurance and strength training I will have an optional 1x/week I will do GPP and heavy bag training and/or sledgehammer work on my tire (weather dependent), again I will strive for longer duration or more rounds completed in a time limit. As either of these options have a bit of both I will use it instead of one of the others on a day where I am constrained by time or weather. Punishments: If I don't follow my planned routine or if I sub in my optional work more than 1x/week I will perform some corrective measures that have yet to be determined but I'm thinking 5 minute cold showers seems like a likely candidate. I am aiming for 1 training session per day but if I need to make up missed time I can do two different types of training a day the give allowances for unforeseen circumstances. I can only make up training sessions for the week I am currently in. Remedial training was the word I was looking for instead of make up training... Brain wasn't cooperating yesterday. Last, but certainly not least, for my fellow Doodlies... PERKELE!! 8 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill. Einar
Was going to start my rucking yesterday but then Iowa weather decided to ignore that it is nearly spring and dump 2-4" of snow on us. Since the challenge technically doesn't start until next week I can get by without needing a punishment if I don't get a remedial ruck in, but I'm going to try to get all my training in this week anyways. 4 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill. Einar
This isn't a set part of my challenge but I recently started following Chad Howse's newsletter and he sends out a "10 days to toughness" challenge that sends e-mails over the course of 10 days with mini challenges named things like dare mighty, humility, sacrifice. Each e-mail has a little reading and links to a video and lays out the mini challenge so I will work on completing each mini challenge to add a bit of mental work for myself. Following completing these challenges, since there is only 10, I will move on to Wim Hof's method. From what little I have read into it so far it is mainly a meditation/breathing routine but has some additional components that lean towards increasing physical and mental toughness. There are a handful of claims about the Wim Hof method that are certainly pseudo-science, but his list of certified accomplishments are certainly testament enough to make trying it a worth while effort 4 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill. Einar
Fair warning for anyone that decides to look into Chad Howse. He uses a lot of hooah, hyper masculine language/terminology which I can easily see putting people off and overshadowing the actual content that he is putting out which so far seems to be pretty solid. 1 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill. Einar
Haven't really made any progress on my goals this week. Had a couple curveballs thrown my way and some OT I wasn't planning on. Luckily it is only week 0 so no harm no foul. I'm going to sleep like a rock when I get home from work and have no idea how tomorrow will go but I'll get a fresh start on Monday. I had fuck all for sleep today because I forgot that I had agreed to spend some time with my niece for VIP day at her school when I agreed to come in early tonight but it was worth it to spend some time with her. Food has been decent this week, not always "healthy" food but I kept decent portions. Except today of course, niece wanted to go to the Chinese buffet for lunch and then I didn't get a chance to eat again until 0300, 14 or so hours later, but at least I kept it to the small pizza that the hospital makes and managed to forgo the fried cheese balls so at least there is that. I hate Iowa weather, snow at the beginning of the week and 60 degrees yesterday. Of course because of working extra I only go to enjoy about an hour of the nice weather with my niece. Hopefully it will continue being nice out for my rucking next week. The second week of the challenge will be one big curveball because I'm going to do some training to become an instructor for the security department and aside from knowing that at least two days will be 8-4 I'm not sure how the rest of that week will shake out but I'm determined to keep a flexible mind and figure it out. 4 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill. Einar
Got things started off right today. Well mostly, got out the door with the dogs and forgot my ruck on the floor. I did weigh my ruck though, with the two sandbag pills I made last year it comes in at 42.6lbs without water. Didn't walk terribly far but it was a start and Remi was tired. Granted he is 6 and was lazy all winter. Doc is 5 months old and an asshole, but puppies are assholes and we've only just gotten to start walking him on a leash so it'll better. He was damn near choking himself the entire time because he was pulling and Remi would randomly decide to cross over in front of me and slow down so I would accidentally kick him or step on him. I decided that from now on, until they behave better on the leash, I will alternate days walking them. Since it was nice out, when the GF got home we took them on another walk. Food wasn't the best, last night we had tequila-lime chicken burritos which I kept reasonable, but then the guy that made out the post schedule for work only cares about making sure he gets a break so I ended up not getting a chance to eat because my only opportunity would have fucked over the guy that goes home at 0300. I ate two brownies when I got home after the walk because I was in no mood to cook anything, which is really no excuse. 4 Quote A true warrior does not train tirelessly to fight, or to kill.
