Diet Challenge: be fussy like a cat

Old – eat veggies with every meal, replace daily unhealthy snack with a healthy one.

New – wet food over dry kibble, by which I mean choosing proteins first. My goal is to never have a meal that is essentially a giant bowl of carbs… looking at you, rice and pasta.

Fitness Challenge: stretch like a cat

Old – exercise at least once a week.

New – incorporate 3 (fertility related) yoga poses into my daily night-time routine.

Life Challenge: play with yarn like a cat

Old  – finish crocheting my blue beanie.

New – get at least halfway through crocheting a new “messy bun” toque.

Nya~~~~!

Had a weak start to this challenge so far, blah. I was visiting my family over the weekend and was sleep-deprived AND certain I was catching my sister’s cold. All yesterday I was dizzy and drained, took a two hour nap and ate nothing but soup, all the while feeling like crap. Missed my stretches too.

Thankfully today I feel like I’m more or less heading back to normal. Supposed to go exercise with my SIL today, buuuuuut…

(talking about health and doctors and fertility)

Spoiler

So. Both me and my SIL are trying to get knocked up, with months of un-success behind us. We’re also both trying to be healthy and fit. Both of us have gone to our family doctors/holistic practitioners for help with fertility and both of us have been (separately) instructed not to lose weight, not to do any strenuous activity or workouts, and to not consume less calories than we burn. Neither of us likes these instructions. She’s accepting them better than I am, but I’m just like “uh but Instagram is full of fit & pregnant gym junkies” and feeling kinda distrustful on the inside. I don't want to be infertile, but I also don't want to make Getting Pregnant the crux of my whole goddamn life.

Realized I forgot to bring my Greek yogurt to work, ugh. Mondays are the worst.

I certainly don't have any fertility tips, but I remember how bleak it felt when it seemed like everyone was able to get pregnant except my husband and me. I didn't stop exercising, but my doctor never suggested not to, so I probably would've if he had. It took us about 6-8 months for it to happen, then I didn't realize it right away so for the first 5 weeks, I was still going to Brazilian juijitsu 3x/week. Then I switched to yoga.  Fingers crossed for you. I've been there.

Day 2 (March 20) results

Cat Diet

1. Had either grapes with lunch and a clementine with dinner, almonds for my morning snack but then SIL talked me into cookies & cream breakfast bar as a pre-workout snack. (3/4)

2. Lunch was a whole bunch of oven roasted chicken with a bit of mashed potatoes. Dinner was made by SIL and was unfortunately pad thai... damn you, noodles! (1/2)

Score: 4/6

Cat Fitness

1. Did 30 min of brisk walking/jogging yesterday! (1/1)

2. Crap, totally forgot about my stretches. I need to post them up next to my bed or something as a reminder. (0/1)

Score: 1/2

Cat Life

2. Continued crocheting the messy bun hat, didn't get very far but now I have the main stitch memorized.

Score: 1/1

Total score - 67%

BONUS GOAL - I'm trying to floss at least 3x a week (as opposed to never, whoops). Actually remembered last night to do so!

Day 3 (March 21) results

Cat Diet

1. Had grapes with lunch and carrots with dinner. Snacks were yogurt and almonds, but I was feeling strangely faint and dizzy yesterday so I also had one of those Fiber 1 dessert squares which definitely helped. (4/4)

2. Neither lunch nor dinner was full-on carbs, hooray! (2/2)

Score: (6/6)

Cat Fitness

Forgot my stretches AGAIN. My issue is that I’ve scheduled them right before bed and the timing isn’t working out. Will try to do them with my SIL tonight after we work out.

Score: (0/1)

Cat Life

Didn’t do any crochet; like I mentioned above, sometimes I delay things too long in the evening and there’s no extra time for me to decompress before I go to bed.

Went for my very first acupuncture treatment yesterday. It was slightly painful but overall just meh. I’m also taking a tincture of Chinese fertility herbs that taste so disgusting that the doctor straight up says to follow each dose with a chaser, hah.

Day 4 (March 22) results

Cat Diet

1. Had grapes with lunch and a delicious vinegary bean salad with dinner. My snacks were yogurt and chocolate almond milk (foisted upon me by an overeager coworker). But ALAS, it was another coworker's birthday and I also had red velvet cake foisted onto me after lunch. BAD PLAZMOTIC! (3/4)

2. Lunch involved a lot of rice unfortunately, but in my defense it was homemade Indian curry from my mom full of protein (lentils), veggies (brussel sprouts) and healthy fat (ghee). (1/2)

Score: 4/6

Cat Fitness

1. Due to the aforementioned red velvet cake, I really kicked it up a notch for my evening run, went 10 laps in less than 20 minutes (jogging/brisk walking combo) (1/1)

2. Finally got my stretches in! Felt painful to do (in a good way) and my body isn't as sore today. (1/1)

Score: 2/2

Cat Life

Crocheted a little bit more! One round done, need to see how each new round starts and I can then carry on the hat entirely.

Fertility talk again...

Spoiler

Went for my second acupuncture session today, this time on their heated massage table wooooo! So warm and toasty and relaxing...

giphy.gif

Need to find myself a BBT thermometer, my local Shoppers doesn't carry them so hopefully the one near my work does. Chinese herbs continue to taste nasty, but I'm starting to derive a weird masochistic liking for them. O_O

It's been suggested that if I have a progesterone deficiency, one of the potential side effects is anxiety. THIS BLEW MY MIND, as I have always been a very chill & happy person but around 4 years ago I started getting nervous and bothered about things that never made me so before (like talking in front of people or creepypasta). I thought I was just getting old. But it turns out it might just be my stupid body messing with my brain.

Heated massage table... wow! :D

I don't know much about fertility, but the "don't lose weight' advice sounds odd. I mean, to put it bruntly...

Unless you have some medical condition, as long as you are menstruating you are ovulating, and as long as you are ovulating you can get preggers. Also, I've never heard about fitness affacting men's fertility, rather the contrary.

But then, I'm a random zombie cat on the Internet so you should probably take my words with a grain of salt and ask for a second opinion. :D

I’m not sure what my SIL’s doctor said to her, but mine said that shedding a couple pounds (which I have done) is fine. I think she’s seen some ladies in her practice who are hardcore Paleo and it messes with their ability to conceive, so she was giving a blanket warning. So she probably IS talking about people who get to the point where their ovulation/period is out of whack. I'm good.

Day 5 (March 23) results

Cat Diet

1. Lunch was jerk chicken with Greek yogurt and a couple spoonfuls of rice, no veggies (the meal came with coleslaw that had way too much sugar in it). Dinner was falafel and salad... MAN that was good falafel! Snacks were grapes in the afternoon (only one snack because I was out in the morning). (3/4)

2. My jerk chicken came with rice but I only had a little of that. Dinner didn't even come with carbs! (2/2)

Score: (5/6)

Actually did my stretches before bed! Not sure if I did them right (probably not) but it was worth it nonetheless.

Your food reports are making me hungry. And jealous. Also hey, thanks for mentioning the progesterone thing. When I started on the pill last year my anxiety got worlds better; I was told it was probably a hormone thing but nothing specific. So I'm going to assume it's that. :)

Hormonal birth control is such a crapshoot, my friend. There's a specific brand that changed my effing life (and didn't turn me into The Sad Monster) and I will go back on it the moment I can. I loved it so much I recommended it to my older sister, but after a couple months on it she had her first ever panic attack and stopped immediately. Bodies are so weird.

Bodies are super weird and need to chill out. Or at least all get on the same page so things actually work.

Day 6 (March 24) results

Cat Diet

1. Lunch was once again my brussel sprout curry, mostly rice but I can’t say no to mom’s spaghetti cooking. Dinner was ancho chili basa fillets, rice with pigeon peas, and garlic butter green beans. Snacks were Greek yogurt in the morning and grapes in the afternoon. (3/4)

2. Lunch was a little too much carbs, but dinner was just right. (1/2)

Not going to do the weekend in detail but some bullet points of note:

  • This McDonalds all-day breakfast thing is the best aka the worst, I think me and my husband have had sausage egg McMuffins every weekend since it started in Canada
  • Saturday evening was spent with the in-laws, so there was a lot of snacking and carbs than I preferred. On the plus side I played a lot of games with my very active nephew, which is a great cardio and ab workout hahaha
  • Sunday I took my BFF out for AYCE sushi for her birthday, ate waaaaay too much whoops. For dinner I made ham fried rice with leftover tabbouleh and garlic sauce.
  • Didn't even touch my crochet, alas. Instead we had to run errands, catch up with our financial tracking, and finished Iron Fist.

Week 1 Average – 69%

General thoughts: BOOOOOO not as high as I thought I would be. I’m actually doing well with my food habits, it’s the fitness and life stuff that’s dragging me down.

ugh, food habits are the worst! On my own, I'm ok, but other people are the food habit devil. I know I should resist social pressure and just say no, but it's soooo hard. I feel your pain.
