Big Show: Chapter One

Recommended Posts

This is the beginning of a challenge theme which is going to take me through to the end of this year at least.

After seeing the awesome challenge mechanics that @Raxie and @shaar have come up with, and also following the identification by @Rurik Harrgath of the Swift Hunter prestige class as being my true calling, I decided to come up with my own over-arching custom challenge.  My training goals are not changing: I want to get stronger, both in absolute terms (lifting heavy stuff) and relative terms (lifting myself), I want to get faster at running again over various distances, particularly in offroad races, and remain uninjured for as long as possible.

Here are the basic mechanics for accruing XP:

  • +1XP for every full mile run (i.e. 6.22M = 6XP)
    • races (excl. Parkrun/GRL) count as double points
  • +1XP for every exercise in a workout (i.e. 5x5 squats = 1XP)

  • +1XP for foam rolling (max. 1XP per day)

  • +1XP for NF Yoga mini-session, +2XP for a full session (max. 2XP per day)

In addition, a Lvl 1 Swift Hunter starts with four special abilities:

  • Favoured Enemy:

    • Do extra damage against this foe

    • Specified exercise is now worth 2XP instead of 1XP

    • At higher levels the amount of damage done can also increase

  • Track:

    • Find tracks and follow them over difficult terrain

    • +1XP for any run involving a significant offroad potion (i.e. trails, XC, fell races, etc.)

  • Skirmish:

    • Deal extra precision damage to foes while moving quickly

    • +1XP for every dedicated interval workout performed

    • Amount of damage caused increases at higher levels

  • Trapfinding:

    • Use the Search skill to locate traps and then Disable Device to bypass/disarm them

    • +1XP for reviewing self-care list against my current life/actions and adjusting things accordingly (max. 1XP per day)

    • Effectiveness increases at higher levels

Other abilities are unlocked at higher levels.  I shall figure out how they apply as I get there!

I also have a few side quests that I am currently working on which will yield extra XP:

  1. Hoard all the treasure
    • log every transaction in YNAB and budget accordingly
    • +3XP weekly for keeping accounts rationalised
  2. Check the provisions
    • log everything and post on my challenge thread
  3. Beginner acrobatics
    • follow the NF Handstands course - do specific work as part of warm-up/mobility section before every gym session, at least three times per week
    • +1XP per session (max. 3XP weekly)

Starting Character Sheet

Big Show - Human Swift Hunter

0XP (level up at 250XP)

Current abilities:

  • Rank 1 Favoured Enemy: pull-ups

Day 1!  Yes, no Zero Week for me this time round, I've been looking forward to cracking on with all this for too long!

Today started with a Chest, Shoulders & Triceps workout.  I am loving my new gym, and getting up early to head into town is keeping some kind of structure to my life while i'm not working.  It'll be even easier when I'm just 2mins away, mind you...

Back home soon after and most of the day has been spent catching up with my OU work.  I did find time to do the Touch Your Toes yoga mini-session and also foam roll my calves, plus I popped out for a short recovery run to ease some of the kinks out of my legs (2.8M in 22:19 @ 7:57/mile average).

Food has been good today: Porridge for breakfast, a ham & cheese sandwich for lunch, and dinner was leftover roast chicken with a baked potato and baked beans.  No liquid calories, although ii am going to need a small snack before bed as I am decidedly peckish.  Definitely hit a decent calorie deficit today though.

I logged all my transactions immediately on the YNAB app, so that should be all up to date.

Also reviewed my self-care list and reminded myself of a couple of things that were creeping back in.  I really am very good at letting my head get in my own way!

+2XP for the run

+6XP for the weights

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for NF Yoga mini-session

+1XP for reviewing self-care list

Day 2!

It has been a busy one.  I was at the gym first thing for Leg Day (words cannot express how much I have missed deadlifts!) and I also had my first attempt at the beginning exercises for the Handstand progression too.  My wrists are definitely not mobile!  Gonna give them another couple of goes and then try the test to see if I can move up to the Lvl 2 exercises.  Very handy being able to watch the videos on my phone while I'm there though, saves me remembering them all wrong.

Then I headed off across town to buy most of the furniture for my new flat - should be delivered in the afternoon on moving day, which works out perfectly!

Apart from that I have mainly been doing more of my OU work, and also cramming for my driving theory test on Thursday; the majority of it's all fine, but they might ask for the specific numbers for stopping distances etc. so I'm covering all my bases.

Also found time for a yoga mini-session and some foam-rolling today, which nicely ticks off that too.

YNAB: I properly rationalised my account today - going through the transactions I had logged and marking them as Cleared, and also checking there weren't any others that I had missed.  All looking good now!

Food today was pretty good, although it will get easier next week when I'm not as reliant on eating out for whatever is available at home; a small bacon sandwich for breakfast, a healthy full english from a quality cafe for lunch, then dinner was homecooked ham, egg & chips with peas & sweetcorn.  Plus plenty of coffee, tea, and water, but no liquid calories at all.  Tomorrow will not be as good, as I am eating out at least for lunch with my sister, possibly dinner as well with someone else.  Still up in the air at the moment.

Tomorrow will either be a rest day, or I might manage to fit in a brief run/gym trip in the morning too.  Basically depends on what time I wake up!

Week 0, Day 3!

This was definitely an off-plan day.  My sister is off work this week, so this is the day we had set aside to go out for the day.  We headed into town for lunch, some shopping, dinner, then some drinks on the way home.  Good to catch up and exchange notes on what the rest of the family has been up to, and apparently there is some juicy scandal from a many years ago that I have yet to hear about.  Gonna have to winkle that out of her at another time.

Beforehand, however, I got up early and headed into the gym for my workout.  Back & biceps completed, with Handstand work during the warm-up.  I do love a workout that finishes with different types of curls; it's just rather damn satisfying.  Managed more reps on the pull-ups today too, which is good.  A quick Touch Your Toes mini-session while at home got everything ticked off for the day.

Didn't input all the card transactions into YNAB today, but I did put the receipts in the To Do section of my wallet so I can easily do them today.  And turns out short train journeys are a very useful time for reviewing the Self-Care list as well!

Scoring

+5XP for Back & Biceps

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for NF Yoga mini-session

+1XP for Handstand work (Beginner acrobatics)

Where are you at in handstands? A couple of years ago I worked on it for a while, but decided I'd need about a million pike push-ups to get strong enough and got distracted and moved on.

Oh I'm right at the very beginning - I bought the NF Handstands & Rings course when it became available last year. So far it's just all wrist mobility stuff tbh.

Week 0, Day 4!

Today was a rest day from all training, although I still got my Yoga mini-session and foam rolling done.  Instead, I spent the morning revising for the driving theory exam I had at lunchtime.  Yet another downside of not learning to drive until I moved out to Qatar - my license is only valid for the first year after moving back to the UK, and so I have to pass all the UK tests too.

The test went well - 48/50 on the questions and 63/73 on the hazard perception tests.  Now I get to book my practical test, so hopefully I'll be back on the roads soon enough!  Much easier driving over here too, as the traffic is somewhat less psychotic than that in the Middle East... *shudders*

Food was not too bad today, although I did have to grab lunch in town again - GF bread things with ham for breakfast, a sausage & cheese toastie from Costa for lunch, and dinner was slower cooker chicken & pork provencale - gonna steal that recipe for myself!  Plus many coffees, teas, and pints of water too - no liquid calories today.

This evening I went through my wallet and input all the outstanding receiptes into YNAB.  I really really am spending far too much money on takeaway coffees at the moment.  Although they come with a good excuse for social time at the moment, so I'm just gonna have to suck it up.  And remember that from Tuesday I'm in my own flat, and in charge of all my own food & drink once more.  Life will be much simpler again then, just need to make it through a few more days first.

Week 0, Day 5!

Early post today - I'm heading out for the afternoon/evening with my Dad so won't be able to post later on.

I started off the day with a really nice trail run - off along local public footpaths through the woods and across some fields.  It took my up past a local quarry, which meant I got to practice my active descending as the footpath came back down along the side of that.  Nice wide trail, clear path ahead, so I could turn off the brain and start actively running down the hill.  I had forgotten just how much damn fun this is!  Really can't wait for the next XC/fell race I get to do!

Overall the run was 5.2M in 42:50 @ 8:06/mile average.  Got some good thinking done during it too; I've said it many times before, but a good hard run is always excellent for clearing out my headspace a bit.

After that I got all my jobs done for the day, got today's planned study session done, then ticked off mmy Yoga mini-session and foam rolling too.

Food has been healthy enough so far - leftover gammon, cheese, and some GF bread.  Many cups of  tea, coffee, and water.  Going to be eating out for dinner and also drinking several ciders, but there are relatively healthy options available so it won't be too bad a meal.  I have a deal going with @RisenPhoenix to do some food-based accountabilibuddying from next Wednesday onwards anyway, so the end is definitely in sight.

Right, off out for the rest of the day now.  A good way to start the weekend!

Scoring

Well it wasn't quite 12, but there were definitely more than 2.  And I got a pizza on the way home too.  Oops.

It is, 43 to pass.  That came as a surprise when I started looking at practice tests!  Thankfully never again now, I've passed two of them in two separate countries - surely that is sufficient?

Week 0 , Day 6!

Well.  What a day.

Up first thing to head into town and go to the gym.  Got there and really wasn't in the mood for a proper workout, so I warmed up, did my handstand practice, then worked through a load of mobility work and stretches to get my legs into a good state for tomorrow's race.  I'll do a bit more again in the morning.

A bit of shopping afterwards (now have a kettle for the new flat - vital importance right there!), then met up for a really nice brunch.  High quality full english breakfast and a couple of coffees - just what I needed to clear any lingering after-effects from yesterday.

This afternoon I broke out my Instant Pot for the first time (Christmas present from my parents) and had a go at Instant Pot Kahlua Pig - HOLY FREAKING CRAP THAT IS ONE TASTY MEAL.  I shall definitely be making it again later on in the week and using that pork for my meal prep.  Only a few more days until I'm cooking for myself full-time again!

Apart from that, I am now just having a rather quiet evening researching future purchases online - tomorrow morning is the Stowmarket half-marathon so I'm resting up for that.  Not gonna be anywhere near my PB, but I think that if lots of things fail to go wrong I might manage to dip sub-1:50.  It'll be fun either way, and a good training basseline for when I actually race on of them in September (the Great East Run in Ipswich).
