Kestrel - Choose Your Own Adventure

Kestrel Grey

Recommended Posts

Kestrel leaned back against the trunk of the old pine tree and watched the rain continue to sheet down.   In some parts of the world, Spring apparently arrived with a gentle sigh. In these mountains, it ROARED.  She had come a long ways today and was so close to home that she could smell it, but she would prefer not to drown or freeze, so she hesitated.

There is a bottle of mead in my pack, she thought, and a nip before going onwards might be just what is needed…

Kestrel sighed and pushed away from the tree and out into the downpour. There would be time enough for the mead later, and this bottle was the Tavern’s finest. It deserved to be savoured.

Welcome to Zero Week of the Kestrel – Choose Your Own Adventure – Story!

There will be four challenges that need to be met each week for the success of the story segment, and any failures will impact the outcome of the story.  I am also shaking up my exercise routine quite a bit and trying out P90X3 (the 30 minute version) for the next 90 days in place of my regular 3/week strength training.

The Challenges

Strength               What: daily P90X3 session for the Classics rotation. OCR training classes can be substituted for any P90X session.

Why: I am hoping this gives me a boost in my push-ups/chin-ups stats. ‘Cause they’re currently at zero. :(

Flexibility             What: daily yoga mini-session from NerdFitness Yoga Academy. Full sessions are also fine. :)

Why: I am hindered on some of the OCR obstacles due to inflexibility

Communication   What: daily Spanish practise, any amount or type.

Why: I would like to get through the rest of the course books that I have for Spanish and try to get through the Spanish TV drama series in preparation for starting Skype conversations again.

Health                  What: follow a rough macro-tracking meal plan of 5 servings protein, 5 servings fat, and 10 servings carbs per day (all healthy)

Why: I’ve noticed my weight creeping up a little recently and I would like to stop this while staying fueled for training. This rough-estimate way of tracking seems doable and effective.

Week 1

Kestrel strode quickly up the mountainside, taking care to stay far back from the swollen stream. The current was dangerously strong from the melting snows. As she hurried through the rain she could hear crashing as entire trees came barrelling down. I hope no one gets swept up in that, she thought.

Suddenly Kestrel paused. Did she hear something over the roar of the stream? Yes, a faint yelping... Shit.

She struggled though the underbrush and broke through just five feet from the water. Her heart sunk as she spied a small red fox kit struggling, pinned on the bank under a massive trunk. The poor thing, it's back legs might be crushed! Kestrel thought. Either way I'll have to get him out, and fast. The water is still rising. The young fox noticed Kestrel at that moment, and stopped struggling long enough to bare its needle-sharp teeth in a snarl. If I can get him to trust me enough to help him, that is, Kestrel amended.

Thanks you two! I got the idea from @Ranger Five, his challenge thread was always so much fun to read and I bet it helped motivate him with his runs.

My challenge won't officially start until Monday, but I started P90X3 this week. It seems a lot easier than I remember the original P90X being, so I am not sure whether they toned down the intensity or if I (hopefully) have just gotten fitter. This weekend was supposed to be a winter backpacking trip but it looks like it may be cancelled due to high winds and avalanche risk. This has been a bad year for them in the Rockies. :( Since this was an item on my Epic Quest list that I now cannot cross off, I decided to actually start a martial art this month instead. After a bit of browsing I have settled on a Japanese Jiu Jitsu class that is offered right near my house.  I went to my first class today and had a great time (though I think I wrenched my neck a bit on the backwards rolls).

I'm very glad it is still zero week. Otherwise I would have killed off a character with my bad habits today. Have you ever had those days where it feels like you aren't in the driver's seat? I could see myself making all the bad choices and tried telling myself to make better ones, but I was ignoring me.

My husband is gone for three weeks so I guess I'm a little blue and lonely, and a few minor disappointments knocked me out today. I went back to my old bad habit of just not getting out of bed, not doing anything, and refusing to eat anything other than ice cream.  It was really weird though, because I have gotten a ton better with tolerating "bad" emotions recently so the emotional side of things was actually fine, I was handling it. But the stress triggered the habits from when I couldn't handle emotions. Urggg.

I eventually resorted to bribing myself with seeing Beauty and the Beast if I got out of bed, dressed, showered, and ate something solid. Once I got momentum it was easier, and a quick bodyweight workout happened too.

England needs a few mountains for sure. Have you done any climbing in mountains? There are still many that I cannot go up because you need to be able to do a rope-ascent.

Week 1 - Monday

It ended up being a great start to the challenge. Monday started off a little rough; the wind was so cold during the hike yesterday that I didn't notice how much I was sweating, and I woke up today with dehydration sickness. Fortunately a couple litres of water and a few hours made it all better, and today was a day off so I still had plenty of time to get my workout in.  I also prepped some meals today for my next few lunches: roasted rainbow carrots and beets, roast chicken (and I have the stock cooling overnight for soup later), and quinoa/wild rice. I love beets. :)

England has some mountains but not many :P and none particularly impressive. Scotland and Wales are better. I've never ever climbed a mountain myself. Even the big touristy ones we have around. It has been added to my todo list. Hopefully this year. My Mum will be over the moon if I take a trip to Wales in the summer so I might be able to make it a thing.

Week 1 - Tuesday

Soup took an unexpectedly long time to get ready, so my workout did not get done before work. Since I return home after 10 pm I decided to be kind to my downstairs neighbours and swap out my cardio workout for the P90X yoga one. Otherwise the day went as planned.

Week 1 - Wednesday

Again I ended up doing my workout after 10 pm, but fortunately today was all about push-ups and pull-ups. My arms are numb right now so forgive me if I have several typos. :)  Nutrition, yoga and Spanish also were completed as planned.

The only thing is I keep on eating my planned breakfast late at night, as the mornings have been a little tight for time.  It seems to be working for me though.

The nerd in me is having a mental breakdown at work. We receive packages shipped in dry ice, and people are constantly leaving signs saying things like "Please leave box open for dry ice to evaporate". Dry ice sublimes! It does not melt. It does not evaporate. And I know I am being a complete anal tool for insisting on using the correct word so I make myself just walk away, but but but...

Week 1 - Thursday

It was a little hard to drag myself out of bed on Thursday. I did my exercises and my Spanish and had no time left over to make any food, so I picked up some Thai food on my way to work. It seemed to hit my macros, though it is hard to be sure when I didn't cook it. Yoga when I got home before bed so a pass on all fronts.

Week 1 - Friday

I had my first fail of the week, and I didn't even mean it! At the grocery store this morning there was someone giving out cookies, and I took one without thinking. It was on my last bite that I realised what I was doing. Damn! On top of that I think I am getting sick. I was really tired again this morning, and now my throat is starting to hurt.  Fortunately I only have yoga left for today's challenges. Some oregano oil and some sleep hopefully will make it all better by morning.

Hope you get over your sickness quickly. As far as the cookie goes, don't think of it as a failure, think of it as a lesson in remembering and paying attention to what you are eating. There are so many times where sugar is pushed at us, it is easy to eat and not even really be aware of it.

Thanks, and I'll try.  You're right, when you pay attention it is amazing the number of times a coworker tosses you a candy as you sit down, or people offer sugery samples as you pass. I work in a health centre and still everyone brings baking in and each area has a candy drawer.  I rebelled, and I put a colouring book and some pencil crayons in our drawer for a pick-me-up.

Week 1 - Sunday

Hurray for the end of the week!  Today's P90X workout was an optional one, so I took a much-needed rest day and napped before work.  Man is that cold virus ever fighting hard! Fortunately I am fighting back harder and am still winning.  Tomorrow will be grocery and food prep day. Since that left me food-less today I picked up my dinner at a new place that opened up nearby called Freshii. It was really good! Kind of like what Subway wishes it could be.

So without further ado:

That sounds like a great trip. Wales is on my list of must-visit sites, so be sure to take pictures when you go!

I love Freshii. Great choice! -drools-

I had never heard of it, it must be an American chain? Either way I am happy it found its way to my town.

Week 1 Resolution

Kestrel took a deep breath, then looked up and down stream for anything suitable to lever the trunk off the fox. Miraculously there was a large sturdy branch 20 yards upstream that looked promising. "Don't worry little one, I'm going to help you," she gently told the scared beast.  The fox relaxed its snarl but continued to watch her intently.  Kestrel ran over and grabbed the branch. Perfect! Running back to the kit she wedged it between the heavy trunk and a stone and prepared to heave.  "Don't be scared," she said.

"I'm not scared" the voice of a young boy stated defiantly.

Startled, Kestrel paused. Did it just talk? But now wasn't the time to think about that. "Okay, just stay still for a minute longer." She leaned her weight onto the branch and the trunk listed with surprising ease.  The fox squirmed forward then bounded away from the trunk, and Kestrel dropped it with a reverberating crash.

They backed away from the river together and stopped a safe distance. Kestrel looked down cautiously at the unexpected creature, but the fox seemed quite calm now that he was free and began licking his fur back into place.

"Let me check if you are hurt anywhere," Kestrel said, reaching for the med kit in her bag.

"I'm okay. I'm tough!" He said cheerfully. Kestrel smiled. He reminded her of her little nephew.

"Okay, tough guy. Let me put a dressing on that scratch, and then we can introduce ourselves."
