Discworld Reading Club - Reaper Man (Challenge #58)

This one is so metal, guys.

Reaper Man.

It is the best.  Death is still a precious cinnamon roll.

This book is fine to read without the previous Death book.  It doesn't rely on any continuing plot or characters that you can't pick up from this book, so you can jump in here if you've missed previous challenges.  It is also delightful and action-filled and sad and happy and wonderful.  It also has zombies, gluttonous epicurean wizards, undead-rights activists, existential battles, and one of the most surreally post-modern epic wizard-monster fights ever.  And then there is Death.

Previous Discworld Reading Group Threads

Feel free to comment on these threads if you're reading the books some time in the future and want to discuss them.  Just beware that there will be spoilers in these, if you haven't finished the book.

  • Challenge #55 (December) - Guards! Guards!, the most commonly recommended starting book, which introduces the hapless police force of Ankh-Morpork, Discworld's biggest city, one of the major sets of characters followed through the series.  This is the book where people often feel the writing matured into something fully representative of the series that followed, and it introduces Sam Vimes, one of the major characters we follow through the books.
  • Challenge #56 (January) - Wyrd Sisters, which introduces Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat; a trio of witches in the rural Ramptops mountains, who carry another major subseries of the books.  Granny Weatherwax lives in a town called Bad Ass, and it might as well be named for her.
  • Challenge #57 (February) - Mort, which is the first major book in a series focusing on the Grim Reaper and the consequences of his questionable parenting decisions.  Death is the third major character in the series.
  • Challenge #58 (March) - Reaper Man, the second Death book, where the Grim Reaper schools people about harvesting, and also there are zombies and wizards and insanity.
  • Challenge #59 (April) - Men at Arms, the second City Watch book.  Sam Vimes gets married, there are clowns and dwarfs and trolls and assassins, lots of things explode, there's a high body count, and Leonardo da Vinci shows up to invent some shit he really shouldn't.
  • Challenge #60 (March) - Witches Abroad, the second Witches book.  The Witches go on a roadtrip to Genua to eat gumbo, attend carnival, and deal with some world-class creepy fairy-godmothering.  Disney and Tolkein get eviscerated, fairy tales are the worst and we can't be having with them, and Granny Weatherwax is the biggest badass there ever was.

And if there are no objections, I'll pencil in the next Watch and Witches books for the next two challenges (Men at Arms and Witches Abroad), just so we have a bit of a roadmap before we throw it open to vote again.  Those are both amazing books.  IMO, all three of these books, Reaper Man, Men at Arms, and Witches Abroad, really surpass the books that precede them, like Pratchett's going through a growth spurt of quality right in there.

Please do!  The more, the merrier.  Bring friends, if you like. :)

This is a good trio of books coming up, no doubt.

Should we add in a catch-up month, do you think?  Maybe it's pushing a little fast to do five weeks a book.

Reaper Man's been announced, so that's going ahead this month - I'm more wondering about next month.  Well, we'll see.  Maybe that's a better question for the last week.

‘Yeah, it’s always the same,’ said Reg Shoe bitterly. ‘Once you’re dead, people just don’t want to know, right? They act as if you’ve got some horrible disease. Dying can happen to anyone, right?’

How's it going?  Who's with us?  We need more victims for this book, it's too good to not have victims.

I have accidentally mainlined most of the book.

I only just managed to find the thread! 100% in!

A catch up week sounds good, though finding out at the end would probably be best. And we can have a totally spoilery convo for each book so far and how they compare.
