noxiousGnome -- Cleaning out the Clutter.

Hey guys! This is another leap into a not-quite exercise and eating challenge. BUT it does impact health over all. And I want to be healthy, and my wife, and my daughter... So Here is the deal!

A few challenges ago -- 1 I promptly failed -- I did a few major boo-boos. This was that challenge in a nutshell:

1. I stuck with a  routine for daily habits -- Mostly.

2. I did drink a gallon of water daily, for about a week...

3. I didn't do the other two goals I had wanted to do: cleaning and something else... writing? I don't remember.

So here is what I know I did wrong:

1. I took too much on at once. Oops I knew better to.

2. The goals I had put on myself were NOT effective, they were not SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. They were necessary... They just weren't any of those.

3. The routine for daily habits was mostly self-hygiene. Which I slacked after the 3rd week of that challenge and I am not quite back to that again. Working on it.

So this challenge is going to be a weird one.

I am going to take one of those goals from that previous challenge and make it this challenge... With the addition of continuing to do the things I did in last challenge, because habits? (and I like my job...) I know this is something I never maintain more than one goal a challenge, but the techniques I learned at work should help me here... So reinforcement for the win!

1. Clean my damn apartment. Seriously... All of it -- clean it. I have an action plan too!

I will complete ONE thing on my list of cleaning to-dos to completion in one day and then maintain it in that clean state through the WHOLE challenge and then some. (I will grab the cleaning list I have in a previous challenge and use it)

This is what I mean: Today I been working on laundry. So that means in order to complete it I have to: Wash it all, Fold it all, Put it all away in the correct place. And then keep it that way for the next (well 5 weeks currently). That's it. It is do it once and then maintain. It is the maintain part that is hard for me... Super insanely hard.

So my challenge is to declutter, clean, and maintain my house. Cause a clean environment bleeds into other things... Like a good clean bill of health, a place to stay, and room to do things in... I love having all of those things. It also would allow us to do some other things:

- Find things we were missing

- Better knowledge of what we have, how much of what, and where it is.

- Remove all the crap. Keep what we need.

- Force us to handle the things we need to take care of RIGHT NOW so we can dispose of the crap.

- Do some movement stuff (cause it will make us move it.)

I am going to break this done into the SMART criteria and see if I make it:

Specific: Do one cleaning to do on my huge list of cleaning to-dos and then maintain

Measurable: Said list gets done completely and doesn't grow.

Attainable: YES! Totally is

Realistic: Yes, especially if I remember to pick up after myself... And my daughter... >.>

Timely: Well, one item off my to-do list in a day = 35 days (that's including this week starting today) I should have that covered.

Here is how I plan on maintaining it: Example dirty clothes:

1. All dirty clothes currently washed, folded, put away, etc.

2. Any clothes dirted today - get put into hamper. --- Repeat until hamper is fill.

3. Do laundry: wash, fold, put away.

4. Repeat.

Another example: Izzy's room

1. Pick up tornado known as kid's room.

2. Daily, before bed and bath, pick up room. Teach Izzy to maintain it as much as she can without our help.

3. Repeat.

It hasn't been easy to get this even started, But we have kind of accomplished some things... But nothing to the extent I would call it clean. But laundry is almost to a manageable state, dishes are nearly completed and therefore should be easy to maintain. Hopefully I can scratch that off the complete list tomorrow. Laundry maybe. I am hoping to get those two things out of the way as they are the HARDEST to get to a state of manageability.

Once those are done I will chug along on the rest of things. Probably starting with Izzy's room as that is nearly done too.

NGnome!

SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely -- perfect!I agree and will be following your lead on this for myself too.

I am going to get specific, really specific, damn it. I know I can do it.

And you are gonna rock this organizing challenge. You have a really smart (hehe) attitude going into this challenge!

Hey guys,

So this past week has felt like a week of Mondays, ending in the shittiest way ever. Monday was obviously Monday, Tuesday was PI Planning for work and some of the things i was planning to get done on Thursday were planned yay! Wednesday started off with rain, we woke up later than normal for a day my wife had to be in work at 7AM... Dropped Izzy off to daycare, get to work.. Realized my badge was left at home. fuck me. I had to call a taxi to pick me up so I can go home grab my badge and get into work. Done. Sweet, what can go wrong now right? Well.. Everything apparently, what I was hoping to get done Wednesday to have ready for that night/Thursday I couldn't do because my QA person was sick and out... So that whole day went to shyke. Thursday I took a PTO day and spent the day with my wife, she had a dr's appointment and we went to that, got out picked up Izzy and she had thrown up when she got up from her nap... Joy.

Went home, rest of the day was pretty uneventful... Woke up Friday Morning, had to take another PTO day, Izzy woke up puking all over the place. So I stayed home with her and kept her from getting sicker (or at least throwing up more.. It didn't really help much). Cue Saturday. Well, the weather decided to make this week of Mondays end in hell. We had flash flooding. The way to our apartment was flooded. Wife couldn't get to work yesterday, we had several leaks in our roof (oh! That happened all week too... yeah) the power in just my daughter's room is out... And she had a pretty hefty leak in her closet... Joy! Oh and Saturday morning we had to water. a water main pipe bursted apparently.

However, it did give me a chance to do a few things. cleaned out our pantry so it was prepped and ready to rock and roll yay! It is all pretty and organized (well as organized I can get it currently) doesn't smell like rotting potatoes or breads. so win!

I got dishes done! Well, Nearly done, still gotta go through the fridge and clean that out and therefore all those dishes, but one thing at a time eh? As of right now all the loose dishes around the house + the ones in the sink are all cleaned. So win I say!

Wow man. That is one nasty week of Mondays. Glad you got through it and still got some good Wins done as well. I hope the kiddo is recovering! Sorry about the leaks, it totally sucks, but when it's fixed, it somehow feels like a safer, more comfortable place to be. Hope that happens with you.

Oh yeah it was. Monday wasn't awful. I am starting to feel like work is dragging my feet into thick mud I can't get out of. Determined to stick to my guns and get tired of the crap and accusations that my code is breaking things. I am not an idiot when it comes to development, even if my career experience isn't hard when you spend the last decade doing nothing but learning how to code cleanly and efficiently on your own time you start to learn things, then having to take what you taught yourself and apply it.

My focus for my BTech was in HCI, I am not used in my focus, but that is fine. I am a software developer and want to keep it that way. I may ask eventually to switch to a more HCI oriented team but right now I am not pushing it. Instead I am focusing my energies and efforts on other things. My team keeps harping on wanting to get to a point of clean code of quality assurance seeing us in good light (which right now we are kind of in hot water) and sadly the team knows what to do, but no one is willing to take on the endeavor but ME, and they won't let me take it on.

it isn't new logic, it isn't what business wants. Bullshit. If they want a quality product they need quality code. You can't have a quality software product if the code running it is shit. Gah tiresome bullshit.

Speaking of tiresome, that crap at work has made me super stupidly tired. Garbage has been removed from the house, but the rest of the rooms still need to be finished. Tonight when I get home I will see what happens, no idea yet as today is my wife and mine's anniversary (been married for eight years now)

Oh happy anniversary! So happy for you.

I get the 'we'll make crap code in order to make money on crappy products.' Businesses (not all of course, but more and more in my experience) create crap, shiny and cool-looking crap. Sell it, change the features a tad, and release a new and improved piece of crap. I know part of that is my age talking, but somewhere there has to be a balance between keeping up with technology and making products that live longer than a year or two.

I hope you do stick with it though. Doing that will give you great experience that you can build on later, making it easier to get through tough times without stalling or spinning wheels in a way to avoid the shite. You have an amazing ability to look straight at and then through a challenge. You know what needs to be done and when you get your mind behind your decision, it usually gets done with few hiccups. That's what I remember from before.

Hang in there, NGnome. I'm thinking of ya!

Thanks T and Prim for the Happy Anniversaries we had a good dinner together and then we just stayed in for the night. So all and all the day was uneventful other than the shit at work. But that is life.

This past week has been... Chaotic. To say the least. Friday I finally got a resolution to test box issues that needed to be done so I can move forward with my objectives. Just wasted two whole weeks to get it done, which is nothing new. Monday when I go in I will be verifying the box still works and then move forward as required. Onto the List though. With this past week though being so chaotic I was not able to keep maintaining on the dishes until today (I am finishing up the last set that I seen now). I also added a few other things to the maintain them now part of the job.

The Pantry is 100% complete now I just need to maintain it, which if we eat the stuff out of it and throw the garbage out as we do so that will be no issue. I am hoping to be able to mark off more things later today/tomorrow/Monday in the morning so I that I can at least feel accomplished on this daunting task. Since the flash flooding we had last week we have been sleeping in the living room because Izzy's room still needs some work done and our room is not clean enough or big enough right not to handle two adults and a little kid that likes to be a wild banshee. The living room provides enough room and accessibility to things we need right now anyway so it is beneficial for us. The wife is also roughly 10 weeks along in her third pregnancy (the second one didn't end well - I won't bring that up again though) and having us in the living room with the wife sleeping on the futon (not the most comfortable but it is easier for her to get up when she needs to run to the bathroom) has been helpful for that aspect too. She is able to get up easier and what not -- plus I think she sleeps a little better when she knows she can get up easier to use the bathroom.

With the chaos that has been going on I have not accomplished everything that needs to be handled. So that makes it really difficult to get back ahead of the game. Today though I hope to WILL get more done.

When I come back the following days I should have at least ONE more item to scratch off (this challenge my last more than one challenge. now that I am looking at everything going on)

Today I focus on our living room, which is half of the living room/dining room combo of the list. The reason the list has it combined is the two rooms are actually one. I was gonna post images... BUT the site wouldn't let me attach them. Anyway my focus will be on that half of the room. Hopefully I will be able to do the other half today as well.
