Kestrel: It's Always Darkest Before The Dawn

Recommended Posts

This challenge cycle exactly covers the final five weeks that I have to work rotating night shifts. So, the name of the game is getting through it without burning out and without letting myself put off serious training until my schedule becomes sane on May 20th.  Key will be making my challenge goals part of my daily routine so I do not have to think about them.

OCR Training

Monday hike (walk on nights)
Tuesday strength training
Wednesday long run (short run on nights)
Thursday strength training
Friday skills training/hike
Saturday short run
Sunday strength training

If I keep a habit of exercising as soon as I have finished my morning cup of tea (and loading up a playlist), this should get done consistently enough to put me in good shape for my Tough Mudder in June.

Reward for 85% completion: Day at The Cave, a new spa with a bunch of different types of sauna rooms.

Nutrition

Keep to the guideline of 10 carbs, 5 fats, and 5 proteins a day. I am allowing +/-1 to the numbers, and while I am not mandating what I eat within those guidelines, I am expecting that I do not eat like an asshole.  To help with this I am scheduling food prep time for as soon as I have finished my breakfast smoothie. Some days this may not amount to more than putting today's lunch in a tupperware container but I am hoping if I try to do as much as I can daily then there will always be something healthy available to me. Veggie prep especially is something I need to stay on top of.

Reward for 85% completion: New hiking gators. These were going to be a reward for completing the last challenge, but I didn't make my target, and I still really want new gators.

Flexibility

Daily mini yoga session. I don't need to change anything to achieve this as it is already part of my bedtime routine.

Reward for 85% completion: Awesome flexibility! I should think up a reward so I still can get myself something nice if all my other challenges fall through, but nothing comes to mind.

Spanish

One unit of the Spanish Living Language course a week. My Spanish goals until now have just been putting time in every day, and it hasn't been returning as much progress as if I actually had a plan. I'll still try to work on this daily.

Reward for 100% completion: A night out with a local Spanish Language group. Much wine will be had.

My bullet journal will be key in helping me track and stay on point through all this. Because colourful checklists make me happy. :) And when I finish this challenge it will be saying goodbye forever to terrible sleep schedules and hello to a summer of freedom and adventure.

Thanks! So far I have Tough Mudders in Whistler on June 17th (yay road trip!), Rugged Maniac on July 29th, Spartan Sprint August 12th, and an X-Warriors Challenge sometime in the fall, date TBD.  I am also toying with the idea of a trail race this fall, though my current pace would put me almost dead last in the competitive wave, and there is a Zombie Survivor run in August that I am trying to get the time off for.

My Monday hikes are looking to be much shorter than I had originally planned so I may need to add endurance work elsewhere.  A friend of mine who is new to hiking is joining me on Mondays now, so our trips are little local ones without any elevation. Though I am sad to give up my mountains I am happy to have a new hiking buddy, and I'm sure by this time next year she'll be right there with me on the peaks.  Otherwise my workout plan seems to be flowing well.  I did have to lighten a couple exercises since I cannot do 3x10 chinups even with assistance bands, but others are easier than I anticipated.

Zero Week - Monday

OCR Training: hiked with a buddy

Nutrition: +1 for all macros, which is okay as long as I don't eat over every day. I cooked rack of lamb with roast veggies and yorkshire pudding; it was my first time making yorkshire pudding and it must have turned out as we ate the whole tray. :)

Yoga: squat mobility mini session

Spanish: didn't work on

Zero Week - Tuesday

OCR Training: strength training

Nutrition: spot on, I just need a glass of whole milk before bed to round out my macros. We ate out for a friend's retirement party but I was sensible and passed on the alcohol.

Yoga: shoulder mobility mini session

Spanish: reviewed current unit

mmmmm, yorkshire puddings are easy to get right once you know how. How was the rise on them? It's a really satisfying job when you pour a little batter into the tray and end up with a pudding the size of a dish (perfect for filling with gravy):P

They puffed up to ridiculous proportions, but collapsed when I took them out of the oven. I don't know if that's supposed to happen?

Thanks, and now they get mine watering too! My family is from the tropics so I grew up hearing how bland British food is, but I think they have the ultimate comfort foods. Not everything needs spices.

Now I need to stop delaying by browsing the Rangers forum and get out for my run... I'm not feeling it today but I am telling myself it will be great once I get going.

Pretty much. It is part of the reason you are supposed to put them in the oven and pray until they come out :) the 'perfect' pudding will puff up all around the edges and really look like a dish.

There are plenty of spices in certain traditional British food although they tend to be milder spices like nutmeg. There are some British foods that are just the best but they also tend to be the ones that you only want to eat if you intend on putting on 20 pounds instantly. Mostly anything called 'pudding' :P

and now I'm craving treacle pudding sigh.

For some reason my trail running shoes gave me giant blisters on my arches on Wednesday. Which is odd as I have been wearing them for months.  I actually could have prevented them from being as bad as they are, but at the half-way point on my run I was set to shave a minute off my time and really really just wanted to push through it... I convinced myself at the 3/4 point that bleeding feet will set me back in my training more than a PR would be worth and took off my shoes and walked the rest of the way.  Fortunately I still have last year's shoes that I am keeping for mud runs, so I'll pull them out and see if they are better.

In other news one of my coworkers heard that I was planning a trail run this fall. She is a marathon runner and decided we should do trail run competitions together this summer... as in starting in June. I was thinking maybe September. I guess I need to step up my running game since there will be witnesses to my suckage if I don't.  The only issue is she says to train for an actual running race I will need to be running a minimum of 4 times a week. Currently I run twice. If I don't want to give up any of my other training then I will have to find more hours in the day.

Ahhh no it's the Ranger's curse :( problem when 'do all the things' runs up against 'get good at something'. My compromise is 3 times a week. Very reluctant to give up any strength training and I really need that rest day. I've considered doubling up days. Strength in the morning running in the evening. Or running right after a workout one morning. I suppose a good question is how long are these trail races going to be? Are we talking 5k, 10k, half marathon? Those distances I'll maintain you can do with 2 or 3 runs a week. Maybe not be the fastest you could possibly be but you could do well. I guess for longer distances more training miles become more important.

I think I will try for the 10K trail race on June 24th if I can get the day off work. I can re-evaluate at the beginning of June and drop to the 5K if my training isn't going well.  I mean, I don't even really run at all right now, more like slow jogging.  If I run the 5K at least there will be other newbies trying it out too.

So now to try and fit in a third running day. :)

Zero Week Summary

OCR Training: 7/7

Nutrition: 5/7

Flexibility: 5/7

Spanish: unit complete

Thoughts on the week: I found myself exhausted all week. It shouldn't be too from much exercise, as my strength training is only 30 minutes long and I cut my running sessions short due to blisters. Possibly I am not eating well enough. More of the carb servings were from sugar that I care to admit. I'm like a junkie; one taste of sugar and I'm done for for the rest of the day. I'm going to make sure any treats I allow myself are after I have already had a full day of healthy eating.  Yoga is actually becoming a sticking point again now that my husband is back from his trip. Before, I had things that had to be done when I got home from work so it was easy to tag yoga on the end. Now I collapse straight into bed when I get home at midnight, and forget about yoga. I guess it will need to be done before work, along with everything else.  Finally, my Spanish got procrastinated until 11pm on Sunday night.  Now that I don't have to do it every day it is very easy to keep putting it off... another thing to work on next week.

This week will have it's own challenges. Comic Expo starts Thursday night, and my mom flew into town to go to it too. So there will be full days spent eating out at crappy food courts, plus I am on nights this week.  It should be a fun week but I weep for my exercise and nutrition goals.

Are you monitoring how many calories you are eating? I hate using MFP but I did it for a month or so just to get an idea of how much I need to eat to keep me properly fueled.

I'm with you on this. I tried to deny it but as I'm more and more mindful of what and how I'm eating I'm starting to admit it's true. I've found fruit and nut (and sometimes dark chocolate) bars that are sweet but don't seem to set off the sugar demon in me. Brookside is a good brand for these

I'm not at the moment, just eyeballing the servings.  I'm pretty sure I am eating enough. Possibly not drinking enough.

And my mom is pretty nerd-tastic in her own way.  One of her jobs is making historically accurate 1870's dresses, petticoats and all, so last year she made herself an 1870's version of the Insect Queen with a bumblebee bustle.  The GeekEnders had a Star Wars themed event this year so she also made an 1870's Darth Vader costume for her school teacher.

Flavored teas work well for me most of the time, but I will have to try the fruit and nut bars.  If I end up snarfing 20 of them, I'm blaming you. ;)

Hey, I didn't disappear off the face of the earth!  I gave myself time off from being healthy while my mom was in town for the Comic Expo.  I could have found a way to stick with my challenge goals, but it would have cut into family time and I had to make a decision about priorities.  Plus it's my mom, so having her around gives me gumption-lowering anxiety attacks.  But now I am back and rearing to go. :)

In my best news ever, the asshole trainer who told me I was too weak and shouldn't come back to the OCR training gym is gone!  I don't know the story but I am very happy about it. The place will feel much more welcoming without him.

I felt like playing with fire today and said yes to a donut at the beginning of my work shift (don't worry, it was accounted for in my otherwise healthy meals today).  Usually this sends me into a sugar spiral, but I am trialling a couple different methods of distracting myself from sugar cravings and so far they seem to be helping. Mind you, I am in a great mood today so it is easier to say no to sugar.  It was warm enough today to go for a run without a jacket, and a few trees are starting to put out little green leaves.

Welcome to NF and the Rangers! It's good to see another Albertan around :)  I'll keep an eye out for you around the forums. What's your poison when it comes to fitness?

Thanks Kestrel!

I haven't posted my stuff yet, still working on it. But I'll have something posted soon!

My poison: I like jogging and am also working on a weight training program as well.

Not too interested in competition levels, except for my personal bests. So right now it's just about getting back into better fitness for health sake.

Edit: Been exploring different jogging routes around Leduc and noticing woodpeckers and bluejays around (not too common in Edmonton in my experience. Will be getting back to the 24hr World Health Club in south Edmonton soon.)

Lorcan
