Mizbrek Battles a Balrog of Morgoth

Challenge Theme

This challenge, I’ve decided to borrow from some others and take on a boss! Our fearless hero will challenge a Balrog of Morgoth - hey, no one ever accused Miz of knowing his limitations, alright? For this I will be tracking both Miz’s hit points and the Balrog’s hit points. I am using the classic RPG trinity here - physical health challenge goals, when completed, will damage the Balrog (DPS). Mental health goals, when uncompleted, damage Miz (tank). And home tasks, when completed, heal Miz. Each task is worth one point, and I'll be tracking the HP in each update. Miz and Balrog both have 75 HP.

Last Challenge Retrospective

The last challenge was going pretty well up until the 1-2 punch of a bad cold and vacation. After that it went off the rails slightly. That’s okay. Overall I still hit a new weight low during that challenge of 205.2, and generally made better choices than I would have in the past. But, as always, there’s room for growth.

This Challenge

Those familiar with my previous challenges will see a lot of the same basic tenets coming through. I’m sticking with what works for me, and trying to add a few things. Here we have 3 larger goals - build physical health, build mental health, and keep my house in order. I’m incorporating a few mental health focused things here, as I’ve found that slipping a bit lately, and so much of everything is tied to that for me. A lot of success is about being stricter here, though. In order to have a more immediate loot reward, I’ve set a reward of 7 Hearthstone packs at the end of each perfect week, with a reward for a perfect challenge as well. This challenge should be a bit easier. There are no trips planned (with the exception of one night away next Saturday) and no major events (short of our anniversary right at the end of this).

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - I’ve upped this from doing any workout to be 30 minutes, to try and get a bit more bang for my workout time.

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - pretty self explanatory!

Flossing daily - a habit I’d like to build!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - my watch has a guided breathing app that I think will be helpful to mental health. Just to build the habit, my goal is to use that for 2 minutes a day. This can be 1 minute here and 1 minute there.

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - the idea here is to be working on getting to sleep by 10:30. 10:15 proved difficult last challenge, so setting my sights a bit lower here.

Read 1/4 items - similar items from before, but only 1 out of the 4 this time. 2 out of 4 proved challenging last time around, so again, trying to achieve success by lowering my sights a bit.

  • 30 minutes of a book
  • The Economist Espresso (short daily magazine put out by the Economist)
  • 1 full newspaper
  • 10 minutes of a magazine (Economist/Atlantic/Golf Digest/Monocle)

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - pretty self explanatory again!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - carrying this one over.

Practice mantras - this one will require a bit of explanation. I tend to get into these mental spirals worrying about things - money, health, work, and my mind just runs round and round and builds it up. And I see it happening, and I don’t stop it, because I think I deserve to feel bad about those things. This isn’t helpful, or productive, and leaves me grumpy and not a great partner. I’ve been developing some mantras, or phrases to repeat when these particular things hit, and am going to do my best to practice these to whenever these moments come up. This is here more to remind me that this is a goal vs. something to track, but it’s important to me. This could go under mental health, too, but it’s important for me to remember how my mental state affects those around me, so I put it here.

Well as this is Week Zero I'm mostly considering this a practice week, working on figuring out how some of these work into my daily routine. As such I'm not counting HP or points this week, just kind of getting a sense of how to get everything together!

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Did a bit less than 30 mins today! More on that in the mantra section!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Was actually closer to 1500 yesterday, if my calculations were correct. Maybe a touch low but I felt okay (and probably underestimating a bit).

Flossing daily - Working on how to build this in. I don't normally brush my teeth right before bed, and flossing midday or right before work isn't ideal, so likely may want to start that!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Did this yesterday and today! 2 may not be enough for a total impact, but a start!

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - had a bit of an off night last night and didn't manage this. Again, more in the mantra section!

Read 1/4 items - Did a bit of a paper. Again, practice week!

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Folded some laundry last night and ran to Costco!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing so far!

Practice mantras - I was reminded last night how tough this one will be, and how important it is. I ended up in a bit of a spiral worrying about finances. All was well in the end, but I had a lot of trouble digging myself out of that anxiety. Did my best to practice the mantra, but it was clear I need to work on some mental coping mechanisms. My anxiety kept me up late, made me irritable, all that. Ms. Miz was incredibly patient and wonderful, and I am so very grateful for her. As such, couldn't sleep much, got up early. But, got it all sorted, all is well, and that's that.

Causes trouble, fixes nothing. Lovely anxiety. Easy to recognize but hard to fix. If you find the cure let me know.

Excessive beer seems to help, but only temporarily, and doesn't quite fit in with my fitness goals, sadly!

Feeling better today overall, though still not quite back to 100%. A stressful day yesterday (and so far another one today) definitely takes its toll. Enjoying this week zero where I'm working towards these goals, but not feeling like I'm totally bound by them. However, my weight ticking up a bit today tells me I need to get back to them!

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Slept in a bit so didn't quite hit this today, more like 20. Still something!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - At 1700 yesterday which was good. Today I accidentally ate a bit more than usual for lunch (realized after I'd heated and portioned everything out it was more than I thought). About 200 cals over so didn't think it was worth throwing stuff out and, honestly, I still love to eat, guys. Tasted good and was still reasonably healthy, just need to be careful tonight.

Flossing daily - Getting the sense this will be one of the tougher ones of this challenge! Didn't yesterday but will try and work on tomorrow, or tonight. It makes the most sense to do it before bed, but at that point I'm usually exhausted!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Done and done.

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - About 10 minutes over on this yesterday.

Read 1/4 items - Bit of paper this morning. Think I'll try and squeeze the Espresso in on the ride home.

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Put in some laundry and took care of a couple little things around the house. Asked Ms. Miz for a night off mostly, as I was feeling wiped.

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing so far this week!

Practice mantras - Practiced this a bit today, but Ms. Miz gave a helpful tip in terms of helping with anxiety, which is STAY THE FUCK OFF OF GOOGLE. I often will start googling things related to whatever I'm anxious about - health, finances, whatever, and it just fuels things. Gonna practice NOT doing that.

If I read this right, you'll do just about anything NOT to have to clean that garage?

You're about right. ;) And thanks! I think we all need to let off some steam sometimes.

Not a bad day overall. Got to sleep a bit later than I'd like, but it happens!

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Managed a full 30 mins today!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Around 2100 last night - technically a bit over, but as with everything you have to allow for a bit of variance.

Flossing daily - Did this yesterday! Hurt like Hell! And apparently I'm almost out of flosser things. But! Done!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Done and done today.

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - Closer to 11 yesterday. Eh. Week Zero! But paying for it a bit today.

Read 1/4 items - Did Espresso yesterday, and a bit of the paper this morning, and probably Espresso tonight. Need to work on my book though - Rising Heroes has a mission to read a book this month, must get on that.

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Done yesterday! Laundry mostly!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing so far this week!

Practice mantras - Haven't had the need to practice this yet today really, which kinda calling this a win. Maybe should've called it "stave off anxiety!"

This is interesting. I do the complete opposite and go out of my way to avoid anything related to the thing I'm anxious about. I can say that doesn't help me :)

I also tend to google anxiety causing issues (for me it mostly touches education in our country), then try to discuss it with hubby for perspective. That helps me to get rid of most of the anxiety and to think rationally. But of course it isn't always possible. Oh and I talk (a lot!) about what concerns me in my thread. That helps to get it sort of out of my system :P

The very worst of my anxiety is completely irrational. I understand that it is irrational and simply silly so it makes it very hard for me to actually talk to people about it. I find I deal with it far better if I can actually say I've got a good reason for it :) Normally the only real course of action is to turn off my brain and just do/get through/complete whatever it is I'm anxious about without stopping to give myself time to think.

Good ideas all around! For me it's very hard for me to sort out what's rational and not, so it's better mostly to put it out of my head. My mind can always come up with some unlikely scenario where everything comes crashing down around me!

Yup, this is what I find best. Get my mind off it ASAP. I don't think rationally about so many of these things, and often I can do NOTHING about anything I worry about.

Well it's Day 1 today! The weekend was lovely, though ended up with a bit of anxiety at the end of the day. Had trouble keeping calm, but in the end just fell asleep in bed, so there are worse ways to handle it. Official real tracking starts today! I'm realizing since I tend to post at lunch there will be kind of an odd dichotomy of yesterday and today pulling in, but should even out tomorrow, as I'm not counting yesterday towards my challenge.

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Full 30 mins done. A bit slowly and less vigorous than I'd like since I didn't sleep well last night, but something! 1 HP off the Balrog!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Not counting this yet as challenge officially starts today. I was just around this yesterday anyway, by my best estimate, but still, 0 HP off the Balrog since things hadn't started as of yesterday.

Flossing daily - Haven't been great at this the last few days, but challenge starts today! Just need to remember to do this tonight.

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Done and done today.

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - Actually managed this yesterday I think, though took me a while to fall asleep as my brain was running in circles.

Read 1/4 items - Read a book yesterday, and going to go do Espresso now in order to get the extra points for today...and done!

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Done yesterday, but need to do some today!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing yet, but I won't take a point until tomorrow.

Practice mantras - Again I'll handle this one tomorrow, since I haven't had to manage this today.

Great Day 1!

I'm better off staying away form google as far as anxiety, usually searches just end of being worst case scenarios.

Agree, it's like googling your symptoms... 10/10 Google will say you're gunna die O_o

Thanks! And yeah, definitely for sure. And it's so easy to read the good scenarios and read into them. I remember freaking out over reading phrases like "most of the time" and "in almost all cases" and freaking out about the conditional there!

Haha yup! Ms. Miz compared it to WebMD in exactly the same way!

Not a bad day 2 so far! Good workout, healthy food so far. I'm still consistently amazed at how little I actually need to eat. I say and share this a lot but it's part of this journey I never would've guessed. I just ate a small portion of quiche, less than half what I think I "need" and I'm quite full! Almost overly! Yet while eating it I was thinking "there's no way this will fill me up." Though I can't pretend I don't still miss eating those big, hefty meals. I still do occasionally, but not daily!

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Full 30 mins done again! Did a new Rising Heroes workout - not my favourite but not bad. Also worked on my assisted pull-ups for the Deadpool challenge! Forgot to do them yesterday so need to do 60 total today! 40 more when I get home. Generally doing them in sets of 10. 1HP off the Balrog!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Was on this yesterday, just. Was feeling a bit off and overate a bit, but still within 2100. 1 HP off the Balrog!

Flossing daily - So technically failed at this yesterday, but as it's Day 1 I'm going to give myself a bit of a pass since I'm still finding my way. I've set a repeating evening reminder and flossed this morning in penance, so I think I won't consider the challenge totally failed, but I won't take an HP off the Balrog today.

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Need to do this still today. Perhaps after this post! Or on the train home.

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - Yup, done yesterday. Actually went straight to bed without reading, which is unusual for me.

Read 1/4 items - Going to read a book after this I think (and breathing). Maybe Espresso too, since it's easy and helpful to my understanding of the world.

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Done yesterday, as per Ms. Miz. Not the full 20 mins but did some laundry stuff and some miscellaneous things around the house. +1 HP to Miz!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing yesterday! +1 HP to Miz!

Practice mantras - Had a bit of a moment and managed to calm myself today with these. +1HP to Miz!

Not a bad day 3. Nothing too interesting overall to be honest! Weight is almost back to my pre-vacation weight at the end of March which is great to see. Hopefully I can dip below it by the end of the week.

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Good full 30 mins today. Back to Rising Heroes A, plus some pullups for the challenge. Arms are REALLY feeling it today which is nice. -1 to Balrog!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Was under 2100 yesterday! -1 to Balrog!

Flossing daily - Flossed last night! 1h HP off the Balrog!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Done and done yesterday! Not sure I'm seeing great value but it's only a couple mins, and it's a good tool. 0 HP off Miz!

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - Technically failed this yesterday, so taking a point off Miz, but not considering this losing the challenge totally. Cats kept me up a bit which was out of my hands, and I'm still figuring this out. 1 HP off Miz!

Read 1/4 items - Read a book! Dead Wake by Erik Larsen, fantastic. 0 HP off Miz!

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Worked on cleaning our guestroom for 20 mins! +1 HP to Miz!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing yesterday! +1 HP to Miz!

Practice mantras - Practiced this a bit yesterday! +1HP to Miz!

Great going! It's nice to see those HP points coming off the Balrog! He's going down!

You're damn right he is!

Pretty good day until the end of it yesterday. I think possibly because I was a bit low on calories coming up to the evening, but I was feeling really...off. Irritable. I ended up stress/anxiety eating a bit. Still okay, but just felt off. I may need to look at rebalancing my calories a bit, or incorporating some kind of mid-afternoon snack.

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Full 30 minutes, though not...great. Was still feeling off after last night so I was a bit slow. But still, 30 pull ups for the mini plus Rising Heroes B. -1 to Balrog!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Despite the ice cream, was still under 2100 yesterday by my best estimates. So counting it as a win. Kicking myself a bit because the ice cream was still around 500 cals or so that I could've left on the table. Or just eaten less. Ah well. -1 to Balrog!

Flossing daily - Again last night! Need to buy more flossy things! 1h HP off the Balrog!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Did yesterday, will again today on the train home I think. 0 HP off Miz!

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - Managed this yesterday (I think maybe 5 minutes off). 0 HP off Miz!

Read 1/4 items - Read last night and will again tonight. 0 HP off Miz!

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Folded laundry yesterday. +1 HP to Miz!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing yesterday! +1 HP to Miz!

Practice mantras - Practiced this a bit this morning. It's less actually the mantras and more being able to pull myself out when I feel one of those anxiety spirals hitting, which happened this morning. +1HP to Miz!

Well done on staying within calories, even with the ice-cream!

Woo Hoo! This is such an important one, to be able to pull yourself out of the spiral of anxiety. Did it help?

Looks like you are continuing to smash this challenge!

Thanks! Doing my best! And it does. At this point it's less mantra and more making a conscious effort to stop those anxiety spirals, as opposed to giving in to them because I feel like I deserve to feel bad. Mantra is one tool, but often it's just "pull out my phone and think about something else," which helps too! Or just "yeah don't google that."

Good day so far. Excellent workout, arms are dead this morning, weight down to 205.4, 0.2 away from my best low and 5.5 away from Onederland!!

DPS the Balrog - Physical Health

30 min workout 6 days a week - Rising Heroes A, better than last time, with some pull ups thrown in. Debating looking at some kind of preworkout thing to help get me going. -1 to Balrog!

Calories 1700-2100 (1 variance per week) - Felt better yesterday. Still ate up to about 2000, but I think that's okay. I'm using a new TDEE calculating spreadsheet, which looks at your weight and calories consumed over a long period and builds up a true TDEE, based on your activity levels (which is estimates based on your loss). That says my "real" tdee is closed to 2880, setting my 1lb down a week calorie goal at 2300 cals per day. So I'm in the range! -1 to Balrog!

Flossing daily - Again last night! Need to buy more flossy things! 1h HP off the Balrog!

Tank the Balrog - Mental Health

Use Breath app for 2 mins a day - Did this morning and last night on the train home. 0 HP off Miz!

All devices off by 10:30 (weekdays only) - A few minutes late on this in order to achieve the read item below, so I think that's okay. 0 HP off Miz!

Read 1/4 items - Read last night and will again tonight, or maybe on the train home. 0 HP off Miz!

Heal Miz - Keep Your House In Order

20 mins housework weekdays/1h on weekends - Ms. Miz absolved me of this yesterday, though I did what I could. +1 HP to Miz!

Buy nothing non-essential (1 <$20 variance per week) - Nothing yesterday! +1 HP to Miz!

Practice mantras - Practiced a bit this morning while dealing with some banking stuff (which always stresses me out). +1HP to Miz!

"yeah don't google that."

Aha. One of my tutors says this a lot in her lectures. But then, the module is on early modern sexuality and some of the topics we cover... let's just say I'd be afraid of what I'd find lol.

And well done on the weight loss! Look at you smashing your goals!
