Syren Goes Back to Scouting Roots

Hey Scouts! I took a long break with the Rangers while feeling very down and out about the job rut I was in. I have since acquired new employment, and will be moving this weekend. In the midst of all of the change, I am going to get back into my scouting roots. My scouting is a little different as a swimmer, but still aiming for distance while constantly adding improvement on speed ;)

 

Since this is about the 5th challenge of 2017, I think I might have a plan for success. By my count, there are 37 weeks left of 2017. By the end of the year my goals are:

 

  • To be active for most of the day
  • To kick my habit of buying and eating processed food
  • To learn to relax and de-stress

 

In order to get a little closer to those year goals, I am going to take a stab at the following for May:

 

  • Swim 1 mile each day
    • Aim for 30-minute mile by end of May

  • Ditch my Starbucks Habit
    • Stick with Homemade French Press and Home Cold Brew

So, I forgot to budget in pool membership fees with my move, so I will be tweaking this challenge a bit until I get paid again. I am going to aim for 15 k steps daily instead of swim a mile a day. I know I have an ocean nearby, but I don't trust it to play nice most days -- plus traffic is a nightmare. 

 

Practiced guitar a bit yesterday: mostly learning how to tune, learning how to read tabs, getting my fingertips used to the strings, and some tone recognition practice -- I am terrible at playing by ear, but I can kinda play chord E!

 

Coffee -- power went out yesterday morning, so we went out for breakfast, stuck with a cup of regular brew. Power was back on when I came home from picking up emergency preparedness stuff, so I started a pitcher for cold brew -- tasted it this morning and it was still a bit weak. Needed to find internet for other errands today and I still had funds on a gift card, so generic brew out today too. 

 

Did not swim yesterday, as it was stormy all day. Did not make the step count either -- did attempt to wash a blanket via bathtub method though. Logistically not too shabby, drying that sucker is impossible though.

 

Ok off to do internet related errands and go for a couple of nice long walks :)

Trying not to go crazy, but in a completely different way than I used to go crazy.

 

Moving is stressful, and I don't get paid now until the end of the month, so that has introduced a whole new set of challenges for me who likes very much to eat food.

 

I impromptu changed things up / canceled trying to fit this challenge into my life at the moment.

 

I suddenly went to a super strict budget which means no alcohol, not a whole lot of sugar, lots of frozen veggies, or anything I can find on sale, hold meat as a precious commodity, deal with what I can get for coffee, try to find ways to entertain myself without spending money, forget about swimming for now and stick with body weight training and yoga, and try really hard to fit in those dress slacks. I was on a tight budget before, but I didn't feel it as much as right now, so it has taken some adjustment on my part.

 

But! I no longer have to commute 2 - 2.5 hours any more :D

I've been eating them fired. Tried them baked, but I haven't quite got the knack for making them tasty that way.

Sorry, no recipes. I usually only eat them in restaurants, and usually fried.  

I did have some once that were boiled, they had the flavor of a banana and the consistency of a potato. That was in Haiti though, I'm not sure that variety is available here.

Fitness -- Get Stronger each hour take a 5 minute walk and roll an exercise:

6 -- Superman

 

Life -- Do Fun Things on My Own after work:

1 -- Practice Spanish

2 -- Practice Guitar

3 -- Read

4 -- Write

5 -- Draw/Color

6 -- Video Game

 

Health -- +1 for every vegetable -1 for every tablespoon (14.3 g) of added sugar
