Big Show: Chapter Two - The Wandering

Big_Show

Recommended Posts

This is the second challenge in an ongoing series using the same theme.

In Chapter One I bedded in my custom XP mechanic and I think it worked.  This time round I'm going to continue with that, and hopefully hit Lvl 2 somewhere in the middle of this 4WC.

I had originally intended to post it earlier on in the week, but I have spent the last few days sorting out a temporary contract to finally start working again now I'm back home, moved in, and all recertified for UK work.  Unfortunately it's far enough away that I'll have to stay away 4 or 5 nights during the week, so my original plans for this 4WC had to change a bit accordingly.  It's only until the end of June though, so hopefully in that time I'll find another contract much closer to home.

As it is, I think I've found myself a gym near where I'll be staying that I can pay for per visit, I'll be able to run during the evenings, and I'll even be able to keep on top of my OU work for a change.  That'll make a nice difference!

It also means my weekends will involve more time spent seeing family/the Welshman/nobody at all because I want to spend time in my nice little flat I've barely finished deecorating, so consistent training is going to be... interesting at best.

One thing I really need to focus on during this challenge is food.  No meal prep will be possible, I should have limited access to a kitchen during the week, and weekends will likely involve meals out & drinks while keeping contact with people, so my food choices & logging need to made a high priority this time round.

Training goals and workout plans remain the same as always, so without further ado here are the XP mechanics again:

  • +1XP for every full mile run (i.e. 6.22M = 6XP)
    • races (excl. Parkrun/GRL) count as double points
  • +1XP for every exercise in a workout (i.e. 5x5 squats = 1XP)

  • +1XP for foam rolling (max. 1XP per day)

  • +1XP for NF Yoga mini-session, +2XP for a full session (max. 2XP per day)

In addition, a Lvl 1 Swift Hunter starts with four special abilities:

  • Favoured Enemy:

    • Do extra damage against this foe

    • Specified exercise is now worth 2XP instead of 1XP

    • At higher levels the amount of damage done can also increase

  • Track:

    • Find tracks and follow them over difficult terrain

    • +1XP for any run involving a significant offroad potion (i.e. trails, XC, fell races, etc.)

  • Skirmish:

    • Deal extra precision damage to foes while moving quickly

    • +1XP for every dedicated interval workout performed

    • Amount of damage caused increases at higher levels

  • Trapfinding:

    • Use the Search skill to locate traps and then Disable Device to bypass/disarm them

    • +1XP for reviewing self-care list against my current life/actions and adjusting things accordingly (max. 1XP per day)

    • Effectiveness increases at higher levels

Other abilities are unlocked at higher levels.

The current side quests remain:

  1. Hoard all the treasure
    • log every transaction in YNAB and budget accordingly
    • +3XP weekly for keeping accounts rationalised
  2. Check the provisions
    • log everything and post on my challenge thread
  3. Beginner acrobatics
    • follow the NF Handstands course - do specific work as part of warm-up/mobility section before every gym session, at least three times per week
    • +1XP per session (max. 3XP weekly)

Total from previous challenge: 183XP (next level at 250XP)

Week 0, Day 4!

Well it was on ok start to the challenge.

Up first thing to get my run in before things were inevitably gonna get busy.  Found out my planned route included an uphill portion that lasted an entire mile and a half.  Which was nice.  Overall 5.1M in 43:00 @ 8:24/mile - felt a bit tough going, then I realised it was my first run in literally an entire week due to illness and other things.  So no wonder!

Spent the morning filling out loads of paperwork so I can start work next week, then also took care of various other jobs as well.  Managed to get studying done, albeit not as much as I'd like, but hopefully I should be able to finish that one off tomorrow.  Also had an impromptu Skype with @RisenPhoenix during which he insisted on showing off his blue balls.  This was either a low point or a high point of my day, I haven't decided yet...

Off to bed now so I can be up early for a legs session before I have to go do family stuff tomorrow.  Plus more studying, obviously.  Yay studying.

Scoring

+5XP for the run

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for yoga mini-session

Day's score: +7XP

Stash the gold pieces: YNAB fully rationalised
Check the provisions: 0/4

Beginner acrobatics: 1/3

Previous total: 183XP

Following! I'm thinking that since you can't do any fancy meal prep, maybe it would be worth thinking of some simple healthy things you can do for breakfast and lunch. Then just do the best you can with dinner and social times.

That approach helps me limit the damage when I travel for work and have to stay in a hotel. I figure out how to make sure I get a filling and healthy breakfast every day. If I do that at least one meal is under control.

Food while traveling is the best and the worst. When I'm gone I end up buying infinite vegetables and hummus or similar from the grocery store when I have a meal on my own, I think it is my body's desperate attempt to offset restaurant food. Though the internet myth is that restaurant food in the UK isn't as butter covered & sizes are smaller than in North America? But then I see all the pub food? Very confusing.

Week 0, Day 5

I hit the gym first thing!  It was Leg Day so sorry @miss_marissa, I did not #DoMyDamnPullups.  Although I did today add in some lunges - historically I have always hated and avoided them, but today I even picked up one of those damn barbells for it too.  No doubt I shall regret this tomorrow.

I also had a go at Level 3 of the NF Handstands programme!  Turns out I currently still lack the flexibility for wall slides.  Can't even get my elbows and wrists against the wall at the same time yet... MOAR PRACTICE

My eating has been kinda silly today as well.

Breakfast: didn't happen

Lunch: Gregg's cheese & ham baguette

Dinner: Pub dinner with my parents - steak & kidney stew with dumplings.  Lush.

My accounts are so fully rationalised in YNAB that I'm actually beating my bank to it now.  This is confusing me, as I started to question whether or not I had actually spent the money the receipt claimed I had.  But then i saw the empty bottles from when the Welshman stopped round yesterday, and I figured I would have been arrested for shoplifting by now had i not actually spent the money.  One assumes.

Week 0, Day 6!

Early update today as I've got plans for the weekend.

Out first thing for my run - I started off with the same route as Thursday but carried on further along the bypass before heading back down into town.  I would have carried on further, but my legs were making me very aware of the fact that yesterday was Leg Day.  It was an unfortunate scheduling error that I shall be doing my best not to repeat in future!  Overall 6.5M in 55:59 @ 8:31/mile average, so at least the miles got done even if the pace was slow.  I barely even sped up while going downhill, and gravity is usually very much my friend in those situations!

Since then I have done washing, ironing, and other such domestic rangering.  Everything is now packed and ready for when I head off up north for the week tomorrow to start my new contract (including the foam roller and my OU books), and I have also packed an overnight bag for today - going off to watch Jimmy Carr tonight with the Welshman, but we'd have to either miss the end of the show or the last train back therefore we decided to stay over in a hotel for the night.  So we're making an afternoon of it too - a funfair, arcade games, dinner, drinks, then a comedy show.  It's only ten miles away, but it kinda feels like we're going away for the weekend.  Should be fun!
