American Ninja Warrior and Ultimate Beastmaster have been inspiring me to get focus back on bodyweight -- specifically upper body -- and climbing training.

 

Challenge goals:

 

Week 1:

  • Take body measurements and progress photos
  • Set up Google Fit app with weekly challenge goals 

 

Fitness

  • 4 workouts per week total, incuding:
    • 1 climbing session   Climbing gym is closed this month!
    • 1 run, gradually increasing my distance (not speed) over the 4 weeks
    • 3 other workouts, including kickboxing class and/or suspension/rings as likely options

 

Life

  • Meditate every day

 

Diet

  • Take a piece of fruit to work every workday
  • Prep a meal on weekends for lunches 

 

By week 4:

  • Start putting up monkey bars on backyard gym

I'd love to hear how the Google Fit App turns out. It keeps popping up on my phone but I've never looked into it.

I sort of use it in a half-assed manner. I like my paper challenge logs, but I want to try a method that doesn't require me keeping track of a piece of paper, as I have a spotty track record with doing so.

A rogue's gotta be able to climb. I'm realizing that the climbing goal may be tricky since spring break falls during this challenge, and our climbing wall closes then. But I think the bouldering room is probably still open.

 

Kickboxing class this morning-- I was going to say it was a tough one, but frankly they're all tough ones.

I did not make it look easy today, dear. I'll work on it.

 

So, I have had this suspension gear (like TRX, but mine is an off-brand) for like a year now, and have barely used it, which was in fact one of my motivators planning this challenge. Observations:

 

1) First hurdle overcome: Took my suspension rig to the gym and used it in public for the first time, which I was feeling a little weird about. It was fine. And students are about to bail for the summer, so I'll have a less busy gym to work in while I get used to it.

 

2) I am super awkward at it, and I'm still figuring out how to use it to best advantage. But I like doing it, and will have a better idea what moves to work on as I use it more. Next time I'll plan out a very simple workout set that I can do from memory (I jotted down a routine and then forgot the piece of paper. Next one's going in my phone.)

 

3) A lot of suspension exercises require a modicum of balance, control and grace that I ... look forward to gradually acquiring.
