Fireandlight respawn: Lost Woods

It's been a long long while, but here I go again.

To summarize I had been doing so well, but fell off the fitness wagon about 2 years and 20lbs back. I'm frustrated with the starts and stops, and want to become stronger and more fit. I want to be able to brush off some of these guilts that weigh me down and prove to myself how strong I can really be mentally, emotionally, and physically. This week has been exceptionally difficult on so many levels. Next week promises to be just as hard... but there is always room for excuses so here goes nothing...

Main Quest

Reaffirm my commitment to a happier, healthier me.

Goals

1. Establish a regular workout routine again

It started with a new dog at home, then followed by a cold,  and that followed by other injury. The regular workout routine that the BF and I had been doing went to hell, so it's time to get back at it.

Criteria: Work out 3 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each session

Pass: 12 workouts (30 minutes each) or a minimum of 360 minutes over the course of 4 weeks

Totals:

  • 0/12 Workouts
  • 0/360 Minutes

2. Commit to my meal plan

I track food, but lately I've been tracking without regard to my goals. My food choices have been leading me to go "over budget" on almost a daily basis. To break the cycle I'm committing to a minimum of 4 days a week (i.e. the majority of the time) to keeping within my calorie goal. A stretch goal would be to go back to being at or under my goal every day, but if I don't meet this I don't want to feel like a failure.

Criteria: Be below my calorie goal (as defined by LoseIt!) at least 4 days a week

Pass: 4 days a week being under calories for the duration of the challenge

Total: 0/16 Days

3. Finish settling into the apartment

We have a spare room that is needing some love. As of now it's the only room in the house that isn't done being decorated. With a few simple tasks I can very likely feel like it's accomplished, it's just a matter of getting it done. These tasks are:

  • Hang the mirror
  • Frame and hang the remaining photos
  • Clear out the "donatables"
  • Sell or gift the old computers/shelving

Criteria: Complete the to-do list by the end of the challenge

Pass: Finish at least the tasks in the list by the end of the 4 weeks

Total: 0/4 tasks

I also want to give a bit of credit where credit is due: @Elleme I fell in love with your format and detail for the challenge - thank you for the inspiration.

Observations:

I went a little overboard at the company offsite on Tuesday. Wasn't watching what I was eating and came out of the luncheon with 97 calories left for the day :ambivalence:. I knew there wasn't really any way of coming back from that, but I put in some time at the gym to make up for what I could. Overall for the week I'm still under by a fair amount, with softball lined up for Friday. All in all- workouts are off to a great start.

I haven't gotten anything done in the extra room yet, but there's ample time this weekend to tackle some of it. Not too worried.

Observations: It was a rough week. We got the dog back from quarantine this week, and had to bring him back to the adoption agency the same day :( Definitely engaged in some emotional eating that night and the next day (that over by 600+ calories). All things considered I still managed to hit my fitness goals, and I'm proud of myself for that. My weigh in on Sunday (4/30) was positive, although I'm sure my overeating set me back some. Reaffirming my commitments this week and trying to get back on track.

Observations: Destroyed my diet this weekend. We left town Friday afternoon, which meant we ate dinner on the road, but I'd ruined the day even before then (I'm sure I knew in the back of my head that if I behaved it still didn't matter because I'd end up over by the end of the day so I gave up early). When we got to our destination (BF's parents) there were all the goodies... Nothing Bundt Cake... Margaritas for Cinco De Mayo... Cookies... Late night coffee to wash it all down. I admit I made some terrible decisions, which then carried over into the next day visiting my family, but I still managed to hit my goal for the week. I definitely see some room to work on travel diet next challenge - I know this kind of behavior is sort of becoming the norm for these types of visits.

By the time we got home on Sunday I didn't have much energy left to try working on the extra bedroom, will have to pick up the slack next weekend (this one coming up)... Although I now realize that the donatables and the shelving were actually 2 tasks instead of 1 so I'm actually ahead of where I thought I was. I guess that's good, but doesn't excuse being a lazy pants yesterday...

Observations: Two days into this last week and my willpower is waning...no joke. Last week was better, but I'm still sucking at getting around to the extra bedroom. I'd like to say there's some excuse for it other than my own laziness, but I don't know that there is. I spent much of the weekend cleaning up the rest of the house instead of doing the things in the room that I needed to do.  I also forgot to buy the frames for the 2 things I planned to hang in the room. Then there was socializing with friends and celebrating Mother's Day... and before I knew it, the weekend (and my free time to do these things) was over.

Beyond that, I'm definitely seeing a trend in my calorie consumption habits. Willpower tends to wean toward the end of the week, so I indulge more, leading to being over calories. I am definitely proud of the fact that I've been regularly making it under goal 5 days a week instead of 4.

Just need to double down this last week and get through the rest.

No workout yesterday. I feel like I've already failed this week and it's just started.

Can't workout tonight, going to an info session for a part time master's program. Wondering if I'm making a terrible mistake.

OH THE DOUBT!

It was informative, for sure.

Turns out the program is essentially about what I already do as a job. The idea of spending 18-20 additional hours a work doing work that I'm not really getting paid for didn't exactly sound appealing, since my goal is more about getting back into Engineering and Development and not project management.

Still, part time is appealing, and dipping my feet back into the educational sector with something I'm already familiar with seems like a sane way of handling this.

All in all, I'm still on the fence. Need more time to think about it and feel out my other options. So much to do, so little time to do it.

  • Update: Still trying to keep my nose to the grindstone and finish out this week. I've been sullen, exhausted, and really unmotivated this week. Not sure if it's my impending 30th birthday, or something else. Trying to be forgiving, but don't want to make too many excuses for indulgent behavior. Plan to hit the gym again tonight.

  • 5/17: No tasks
  • 5/18: -

  • Update: Talked with the BF this week about how badly I'm failing at this. The plan is to go out on Saturday and wrap up the last 2 things. Man do I love him and how supportive he is.

Havig a bit of a wow moment. I think when I started this, I thought I would drop out partway through. Just like I usually do. Then I'd have one more reason to be upset and disappointed with myself. Yet here I am - I finished this. By no one's power but my own. They weren't tough goals, but it's a start and I think that's what I needed more than anything. I'm not quite sure where I want to go from here, but I do think I want to keep going.

Yay! You finished the challenge with beautiful passes all across the board. :D Sometimes it's better to find little goals and do them well, or even better little goals that can build towards a bigger one. Super excited for you and looking forward to seeing what next challenge brings :)
