karinajean has fewer tiny excesses

HI TEAM AWESOME.

So, last challenge I tried to have fun. it's important! I did ok at it, but it was still hard work. I'm realizing that I need to get off the STRUGGLE BUS and get on the SPARKLE BUS. before I can do that, though, I need to practice a tiny bit of austerity.

The last several months have been all about being sweet and kind to myself as I work through a ridiculous schedule and a lot of family pressures and crap like a tree on my house. I've been super gentle with myself and not managing my diet carefully, allowing myself to sleep in more and go to bed later, and not exercising at all because WAAAAH I'M TOO TIRED. if I want to turn this fitness train around, I need to stop with the TINY EXCESSES, and get on the STRAIGHT AND NARROW.

Goal 1: STOP THE TINY EXCESSES

or more positively framed, I will:

* go to bed at my bedtime every day so that I can

* wake up on-time and leap from bed all healthy-like every morning.

* stick to my caloric goal which means NOT eating all the snacks at work and NOT drinking beers all the time.

Goal 2: Prep for a run

There's a 10K on May 21 and I am running SUPER LATE in preparing for it. So, I am implementing DRAMATIC TRAINING PLANS.

I'll be mapping out the Hal Higdon 10K novice plan, with tkd as my cross training, and in a way that will maximize the 4 weeks I have to get ready for the run as best as I can.

ALSO, listen to your body while you're running, karinajean, and fiddle with foods so you are eating the best you can and not feeling starved (aka fill up on protein, not cake).

Goal 3: Don't break yourself

With all the running and the shortened schedule I have to focus on restorative activity too. So, that means yoga. do it in the mornings when I'm not running.

STRAIGHT AND NARROW LOOKS LIKE THIS:

logging my stuff here on nf.

logging in the hobobujo.

don't eat back exercise unless you're starving and then by all means eat it back but try not to do that in the form of beer and ice cream (though there is room for beer and ice cream in a healthy lifestyle).

measurements before the end of April.

do an interesting comparison between heart rates for a run of set distance at the beginning and end of this period.

show you the weekly exercise plan drafted out every week!

I declare a Monday start! so: START!

I ran this morning, did the thing AND it was bright enough that I could run outside, so pleased. 2.5 miles | 24:55 min | 9 min 52 sec pace.

I'm going to run out of time for the 10k, even tightening up the schedule. I'll max at 5 miles 1 week before the run and I'm hesitant to squeeze another 0.5 increase in there. Maybe I can, we will see. I haven't run since... oh crap... 3/22.

Monday started out so great with my run!

ALSO I rode the motorcycle to and from work! which was great!

and my broke ass car is officially FIXED! and home again!

but then I didn't do my extra work that I needed to do, and ate a bunch of cheesy poofs (bonus outcome: no more cheesy poofs in the house), and didn't quite get to bed on time tho' I tried.

And then today I woke up at 3:30 AM stressed about work that I need to get done quick, that is kid of high pressure, and got out of bed to do some of it. I'm about to send all the emails I drafted (hate sending emails at 445AM, it just *looks bad*) and do my yoga morning.

BUH

today is going to be so tired.

wow, it didn't take long for me to crash at all. after my ridiculous trip last week I don't have an reserves. I'm at work and feeling a tiny bit nauseous, so coffee is out for now. I am committed to being awake for a good long time - I have a meeting in NYC tonight that I can't miss. UGH. thankfully my husband is in the city too and will drive me home afterwards.

ALSO somehow? somehow yesterday I burned a bajillion calories over goal? loseit logged a 1100 calorie bonus from exercise... now, running was responsible for 385 of those but I'd forgotten that the motorcycling also manages to add a lot of calories... apparently it's between 6 and 7 calories per minute, according to the fitbit. I mean, I am actively squirming around, my heart rate is up, etc. it's always surprising though.

Hm, how much of that do you think is road vibration causing your fitbit to count steps?

I'm sure it's causing a HUGE step increase - my car is like that too! NEVER do a step competition with me, I totally cheat. I decided a long time ago that I don't care about steps, really all I care about is calories which SHOULD be calculated entirely from HR and nothing else - I've had some laborious emails with fitbit trying to confirm that, and I'm PRETTY sure that it's the case. when I have an exercise logged for driving or motorcycling I'll delete the exercise and my calories don't change, so I sorta have to believe them. the other reason I really tried to confirm that the calories are derived ONLY from some arbitrary formula having to do with my HR is because other arbitrary formulas for calories burned that are based on exercise type and weight and duration really overestimate the calories I am burning.

Be careful with the Fitbit biking/ motorcycling KJ.  It registers each 'vibration' as a 'step' and it thinks you've just taken an amazing jaunt!   It did this for bike rides for a long time too!  Actually it still does.  My Saturday bike ride, earned me 7000 steps.    I overwrite the Fitbit data with my HRM data so that it doesn't add me up for a bajillion wiggle-calories!    I dunno if anyone has figured out a way to counter that mis-info from Fitbit... maybe google fu it?

Still sounds like a lovely day!!!

So I had legit spent like, days of poor communication with fitbit helpdesk asking them if the calories were only calcuated based on HR, and not steps. And I am pretty confident that this is the case?

How does my tracker work while I'm driving in a car?

Our engineers have worked diligently on your tracker's algorithms to make sure that it does not pick up false steps or activity recordings while in a car. Unless you are driving in a car with a stiff transmission or on back country roads, your tracker should not give you credit for any work that you don't do.

If you do pick up some steps while driving, see Can I delete data? for instructions on removing steps.

Yay for short race training times! I have a 10k on June 4th and am legit just planning on winging it. Look at you being all responsible and actually training. ;)

You should be good for a 10k if you train to 5 miles don't you think?
