Luciana Valerosa Culming - Stick to the schedule

April/May Challenge (23.04.2017 - 20.05.2017)

This challenge will be about time management again. I'll try to incooperate more changes into my schedule and try to get my stuff done while visiting classes. I want to finish my studies without more lags, so this will also be a challenge for my discipline. On the other hand I'll also schedule times of relaxation. I shouldn't take things as they come anymore. At least not, if they take up more then two hours on one day. And I'll force myself to procrastinate less on housework.

Fun things are going to happen:

  • I'm making a small cosplay of the Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland). I'm not good at sewing and can't put much time into this, but I like this charakter and I'm trying to create my own interretation. And I'm visiting my first ever cosplay ball on the 6th May.
  • I started visiting a dancing course from university. It's not so good for newbies, but it's free and I want to feel a little confident about what I can do again and just challenge myself by trying out something new. I was never good with standard dances or pair dances in general. And it will also be a little odd to do this with I lot of people I don't know. My bf won't join me, so... I'm curious about it. Did my first session on Wednesday April 27 and although there was some frustration and one guy just let me stand there alone, when he realised I was a total newbie. But I still had fun and didn't let it get to my heart.
  • I'm going to do some Tai Chi and Yoga again at university. Visited both classes in week one and both teachers remembered me annd seemed to be happy to see me again. That was really nice.
  • After my next milestone, I'm going to visit a friend in Vienna. He's going to have a concert with his band and we want to cheer for them. And finally see the city again =)

Goals: (More or less the same compared to last challenge)

March/April – Continuity

The zombies are still roaming the streets, so I'll continue what I've been doing so far and try to not lose my brain. I only changed my goals little by little since the beginning of the year building up momentum. This challenge will only be harder because of some milestones I set myself and my first course will start on April the first. The course has high reading requirements, that's why I try to get as much as possible done about two projects, I want to hand in on May 15.

Goal One: Overcome the Virus and scavage enough for food

With this goal I try to get healthier and improve my immune system. I'm getting a cold frequently. Therefore I’m trying to build some healthy habits and reduce unhealthy diet habits. I'm also trying to lose weight at the moment. These goals helped me to watch my portion size and I changed my regular meals. Usually I was skipping lunch and eating a lot for dinner. My bf usually get's back from work between 7 pm and 8 pm. We usually don't get dinner before 8 pm. Now I'm regularly eating a small lunch with my study buddy and have a smaller dinner portion in the evening. Unfortunately the salad in the evening didn't stick with me for last challenge. I'm buying less fresh fruit and vegetables at the moment, so let's see, how I can still make this happen.

  • drink 3l a day and more when I get exercise
  • 3 portions of freggies
  • reduce unhelathy snacks and take away (not more then once a week)
  • Bonus: prepare a bento for Wednesday

Goal Two: Don't let them outrun you

I got back into walking regularly, but I didn't bild an indoor routine yet. It's hard for me to train outside of classes, so I'll try to do use the courses offered at my university. I can do them for free until I graduate. Let's take at least one positive thing from delaying my graduation. (Had to change my minor subject this therm. :/)

  • Tai Chi
  • Yoga
  • As bonus I'm getting some dancing lessons until May the 6th.

Let's see how it goes and if I can get these things into my schedule without feeling stressed again.

Goal Three: Get your stuff done and don't give in the lethargy

I tried to convince myself to study almost daily and at least spent 15 hours a week on study related tasks. Last challenge I got in my 15 hours in 2 of four weeks. It's getting harder, because of my lectures. I'll try to do my homework every week, but I also want to have some progress with my papers. So I'm going to set specific days for my papers. They are priority. Of course it's not cool to miss some homework, but the tests won't start before August, so I'll make my papers my priority for now. I have to get this stuff don, if I don't want to delay my studies further.

  • Study 15 hours a week again.
  • Bonus for getting all my homework done by Saturday evening.

Goal Four: To Do List

This is an optional goal, so I won’t grade it. Instead of trying to get in five things and do some recreation, too. I'll try to get in some organisational stuff, housework and so on every day. At the moment I'm doing these things in the morning, when I get up at 7am or in the evening, when I get back from studying. Last challenge I managed to get the necessary housework done without taking a day of from studying. Let's do that again.

Week one went quite well. It was a really full week and I don't think this schedule will be manageable on the long run, but it's going to change after May 12. And after the cosplay ball my Wednesday evening will also be free again.

My friends are great. They know I'm trying to lose some weight and feel bad about unhealthy snacks. I don't know, if it was a coincidance, but for two meetings friends brought nuts and fresh fruit as alternative to the other stuff. So I didn't feel bad about the pancake breakfast with friends today. We had pancakes, a lot of different fruits and of course also sugar and chocolate. It was great! :D

I'm experimenting with onigiri. I just made too many of them and could have bentos on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. So I managed to have a lunch with me on busy days.

Score 6/6 healthy eating days and I made a bento.

I also enjoyed exercise a lot. I was able to walk daily although the weather wasn't always that good. On Tuesday I went back to Tai Chi, Wednesday I took dancing lessons, Thursday I went to Yoga, Saturday we trained a little with the swords and in the evening I showed a friend, what exercises we had done in my yoga class. I didn't have much time for myself this week, but I really enjoyed getting back into exercise and the social aspect is also important. Also Tai Chi and Yoga help me to relax.

I studied more regulary this week to get some study time in in advance for next week. I also organized the notes I made during the new lectures and managed to work on my paper/portfolio. I decided to work on the paper, when I stay at my study buddys place and to the stuff for my lectures at home. Because of the classes I can only meet up with Sarah on Tuesday, half of Thursday and on Friday. Monday and Wednesday I work at university in between classes and at my own desk. I'm still not disciplined enough to get a lot done from home but at least I'm slowly getting better and spent less time wasting on the internet.

Sunday 2h; Monday 2h; Tuesday 3h; Wednesday 1,5 h; Thursday 3,5 h; Friday 5h, Saturday 1h = 18h

I finished my homework last minute before lessons for week two start.

What I learned:

The meditations during the yoga classes were really good for me. I'll keep going to the classes, although I have to do some more homework and housework at the weekend because of me getting home too late Monday to Thursday. Friday is the only day I get home before 9:30pm. That's why it's really good I was taking some bentos with me.

Mood: A little stressed and tired but also optimistic.

Yeah I haven't changed my theme since January. So you didn't miss much. =) Glad to have you back at the forums.

Let's see how long it takes me until I'm confident with these goals. Maybe I'll take another theme, when I try out something new again.

Week 2 ✔✔✔✔✔✔✘

This week my eating habits were a little off. I baked a lot of muffins on Friday for the event at the weekend and of course I ate a lot of them, too. And Monday we had our deluxe pancake breakfast, I already mentioned in my last review. So I got a lot of sugar this week. The rest of my eating choices were all right tough and I made another bento. So I guess it's ok. I'll try to be careful with sugar cravings tough. Don't want to make such treats a habit. The rest of the muffins almost left our home. I packed them in my boyfriends bag and he's going to share them with his coworkers.

I didn't spent as much time on my paper as last week but I got my homework done before the weekend. I thought it would be hard this week to get in my study time, so I did more last week to compensate that. Now I'm positively suprised I got in my 15 hours and got my cosplay done. So studying went well. =) Next week will be stressful tough. I set myself a milestone for next Friday. Let's see if I can finish my paper until then. That would be really cool, because I want to continue my arts project on May 15.

Exercise wasn't bad. But I had to skip Yoga. I was just too tired from the dancing lessons and hadn't gotten enough sleep the whole week. On the one hand yoga would have been really good for my back. On the other hand, I still had some housework to do on Thursday evening and with my sleep deficit it wasn't likely I could do both things that day. I'm not happy with my decision, but I guess it was a good one. I walked a lot this week, even got in some extra walks. No yoga. I went to Tai Chi and hopefully my form will improve again. And I went dancing on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday. I even met somebody at the cosplay event, who visits the same dancing classes as me on Wednesday. I was reluctant about continuing the course, because of me being a newbie. In summer there are only free advanced classes. But he said, I was doing all right and if I practised the basic moves some more before the classes, it could work out. I don't really think I'm going to do the beginners classes in winter. A friend told me, there are twice as many people as in the advanced class. I already feel more then a little uncomfortable about the full room in the advanced class. So I'm hesitent to drop the advanced class, although I'll have to put in some effort to not hinder somebody elses progress? Of course there are other dancing classes, which are probably better and less crowded, but they aren't for free. Mhhh :/ and I don't want to drop out of yoga. It's really good for my back. So I'll have to see, if I can handle so many classes at once.

What I learned: Sometimes you have to set priorities. They help you handling a busy schedule. This involves making compromises or imperfect schedules. I can't get everything done at once and sleep is important, too. It was also a good idea to cook the rice for my bento in the morning. This way I already had cold rice in the evening and it took me much less time to prepare my bento for the next day. And I got more sleep.

Mood: Exhausted, but really happy.

Saturday at the Hanami:

There were a lot of people who had cooler cosplays then me, but I still liked mine and got some compliments. I didn't get much stuff there. Only drank a tea at a made café, but it was a lot of fun to see so may dressed up people and spent time with my friends. And I'm really glad, because two of my friends bonded a little, who had gotten a wrong expression of each other a few years ago. I had been worried, if it would work out. Now I'm really relived and hope, that these things from the past won't become a topic again.

I'm also really motivated after this weekend: I'll try to get my stuff done in time, so I can put some effort into my next cosplay for September. I don't think, I'll be able to put in more time into the one for the beginning of July tough. (Chris got me a ticket for ComicCon in Stuttgart and September we're going to go to the Sci Fi Con again.)

Hey, good work! You seem to benefit from doing things that let you practice nice and gentle-like. That enjoyment is key - hopefully it'll keep you engaged.

True. I have to keep an eye on that. Maybe that's an angle I can chose for the decision about my dancing classes. As long as I enjoy taking them, I should continue doing them. But when I get stressed out more, it's better to drop out of dancing and not drop out of yoga or Tai Chi instead. These classes help me relaxing a little better because of me feeling uncomfortable with so many people in one room.

negativ: I feel a stressed by so many people. More stress isn't good for me, when I try to unwind from studying.

positive: dancing classes are good for my self esteem. I can definitely learn more then dancing from these clases. I enjoy some dances at the classes and was able to enjoy the cosplay ball more.

conclusion: Let's see how long this new hobby can keep me engaged. I'll try it out for the next two weeks, but if I can't get in my study time because of me feeling too stressed out, I'll stop going to the dancing classes.

It's great that your friends are being supportive. That helps so much.

Thanks =) It was a ton of fun. So many pretty people. And I didn't feel totally out of place. Instead I really enjoyed spending time with so many cool nerds. I don't have enough time too watch all the anime. But some of these charakters looked really cool. And I also saw some old school costumes from shows and games I enjoyed as a kid like Naruto, Inuyasha, Pokemon, Final Fantasy 7 & 8, Dragon Ball, ... And some shows I recently watched like One punch man and KonoSuba. It was pretty cool.

Spending time with cool nerds is the best. Finding people like that can sometimes be stressful due to the high interaction levels, but can also be extremely refreshing because you know that they're like you, and that you can relax a little and just be yourself ^.^

I decided to not go to the dancing class tomorrow. The not so good trainer will be there again and I'm already feeling overwhelmed by my deadlines. I still have a grasp on things, but I can't let go of things, I've been doing for so long. Usually in May I would start planing for our summer community meeting. This year I can't do the organisational stuff because of my tests in the first September week, all the deadlines, ... Gosh. I don't even know if I can find time to plan my role play sessions for summer. The community meeting is one week before my tests, so I have to get everything in my head before I even might consider to go there.

I guess it's this damn feeling of obligation. I don't want to let my players down. I don't want to let the rest of the chefs down, who have to manage the kitchen on their own this summer. But I can't manage all the things. And a friend said, it's good I searched for a stand in, instead of really letting people down last minute.

My brain is odd. I'm getting overwhelmed by the stuff that's going to happen in July. It's still May. I guess it's a combination. I'm also wortied about my Deadline on Friday. But I got a lot done today. Wrote on my paper for six hours. And later I'll read a text for tomorrows class. Tai Chi helped to calm down and sort out my toughts.

I still feel overwhelmed, but also more in controle of things.

Tai Chi/meditation is so good for keeping thoughts under control. It's amazing what just a few minutes a day can do to my mood and my ability to think clearly.

So true. In the and I figured out what was really bothering me (it would definitely take to long to write that down...) and afterwards I had Yoga. Hopefully I'll be able to put this new energy into good use today.

So I don't really have to finish my current project this Friday but I want to.

1) I can enjoy my weekend with friends from Austria better.

2) I really should start the next project on Monday, if I want to get that done properly. It's an art project and I can't get anything slightly creative done with at least some time to let my thoughts go.

3) It's not unreasonable and I need to accomplish a milestone for myself. Or at least show myself, that I have some self discipline.

Plan: I'm going to work on the writing parts. Get the important parts in. And when ever I get stuck with my art project the next two weeks, I'll tweak the orthographie and the layout of this paper. I could hand in my folder without doing this last part. It's just a bonus. I'm a little perfectionistic sometimes. But I won't pressure myself about that one.

@Teirin Thank you. I'm getting to a point where I accept my own decisions.

Update: I'm going to write the update soon. This week went quite well. Next week I'll have to get some more rest because of shark week. I feel emotionally and physical drained. But somehow I also feel really good and content with myself.

So I got into a life threatening situation this weekend and somehow my thoughts are much clearer now. I'm more calm about a lot of things that happened in my past. And I'm just glad, I'm still alive. Maybe I should write my thoughts down in a journal so I can reread them, when I feel less zen.

Gosh... It feels great to be alive. And I missed my mother, when I tried to call her at home for mothers day. (No big deal I called her Friday before that.) So I didn't reach my mother, but I talked to my sister for two hours and for the first time in years I bonded with her.

Edit: It wasn't that bad. We were driving for 2x 9 hours with a friend, who didn't get enough sleep and didn't want to switch drivers. We saw someone driving on the wrong line in the wrong direction of the highway, ran out of fuel in the middle of a Bavarian village where no gasstation was open for another two hours... It was quite a crazy trip. But I had a good weekend. And, YEAH, Wouldn't do it again but I'm not feeling bad about the experience.

Oh and I realized how many good friends I have ;)

Goal 4 To-Do

Week 3 ✔✘✔✔✔✘✘

Week three went by like a dream. I was busy because of my deadline and social events but I was still having a good time.

Food went well. I only had one cheat day with jummy dark chocolate. My friend accepted my wish and made me different waffles with whole flour, almond flour and porridge oats. Because of the almonds she only added a little sugar. They were really good and I need cream or aditional sugar. Again I have the feeling I can resist sugar better. And maybe I don't want it, because I had too much of it in week 2. The other  ✘ is for Saturday, when I forgot to drink enough during our road trip.

I missed some walking days, but I got in Yoga and my Tai Chi class. So I think I got enough exercise. Although I first thought going to class was too much, I was really glad I did go. I still got most of the stuff done by Friday. And I went to a concert on Saturday night. And I guess I was the most enthusiastic fan that night. haha It was a really smal concert, but I cheered a lot for my good friend and his band. He improved to songs so much in the last two years and WOW. That went under my skin. If he shares the concert on his youtube channel, I might share some videos. ^^

I got in 23 hours of studying this week.

Sunday: 1h for homework

Monday: 2h for homework and an oncoming presentation

Tuesday: 8h for my paper/portfolio

Wednesday 2,5h

Thursday: 1,5h (I tried to write on my paper/portfolio. But somehow I was really unconcentrated. That's why I made an early break after four hours and went to yoga.)

Friday: 8h for my paper/portfolio. I could have worked two hours longer, but I couldn't go on. And so instead I enjoyed a nice dinner with my friend.

My days ended really late this week. That's why I'm going to write a new to-do-list. I don't want to miss more sleep than necessary. There is some house work I should get done this week. And the garden also needs some attention. But I also have to finish my art project by June 1. So I'm going to plan my time carefully. I'm really glad that my time management strategies are finally working.

I wish you all a really good week. Hang in there. =)

Mood: Fantastic. After getting through some busy time, I feel really good.

What I learned: I have to believe in myself. (cheesy ;))

So happy for you that you're feeling focused and on-track! I know how easy it is to get overwhelmed by everything going on, especially where I'm at right now. Meditation is pretty much the only thing keeping me from the brink of madness. :D

You SHOULD believe in yourself, because you are awesome!

Hey, that's awesome that you seem to be over the sugar for now! I know that can be a bear. Sounds like you've made some progress away from it, though.

Also, yeah, you don't want to miss sleep for all the things. Sleep recharges you for activity, and you don't want to exceed your charge. Otherwise, you might do a lot of stuff, but it won't be as good, or as good for you. If you can, try to get more. It will help.

True. I kept that in mind and managed to get some more sleep in. But because of making sleep a priority for this week, I had to take Wednesday of from studying. Instead I got my household chores done in the afternoon after my university classes.

Unfortunately sleep didn't help with my other thing. Last week and this week I got dizzy a few times and felt like my blood sugar or blood pressure was too low. I don't think it was because of me not eating enough. I'm eating more regulary now then a few years ago. And it always happened before training. So maybe for zero week I'll try eating some more or try to see a doctor for a blood screen if it happens again.

beside that this has been the first challenge this year I didn't get sick^^ so jay. No flu.

Week 4 ✘✔✔✔✔

Food: Baked a strawberry cheesecake for my boyfriend and somehow I couldn't resist. And Saturday his mother invited us for dinner and I think I ate too much.

Exercise: Went to Tai Chi and Yoga. But because of me getting dizzy I couldn't finish my training on Tuesday. And I missed two walks because of heavy rains. :/

Got my study time in and my homework done. I'm on track with my current project. So I guess it was all right to only study 15 hours.

Mood: I'm fine.

What I learned: When I begin my tasks early and study continuatly, I can take necessary breaks. And I feel less stressed by my deadlines.

Challenge Retrospektive

Goal One:  Overcome the Virus and scavage enough for food Grade: 75%, B (Last challenge: 62%, B)

  • drink 3l a day and more when I get exercise
  • 3 portions of freggies
  • reduce unhelathy snacks and take away (not more then once a week)
  • Bonus: prepare a bento for Wednesday

I think I was able to get a healthier lifestyle. I didn't get the flu this challenge. I had some cheat days, but I ate less produced stuff. I baked my own cakes and was more in controle of how much sugar I consumed. Again it helped, that I'm tracking my water intake with plant nanny. With the freggies Goal I figured out, that smothies are a good way to get in fruits. This way you can still use overripe stuff, that's sometimes sold with a discount. And I managed to pack my own bentos in the evenng. So I didn't have to spent money on Cafeteria Food. I also realized that Rice balls are really cheap to make. So no more skipped lunch. So for next challenge I'll try to not get in so many cheat days. The rest seems to be fine.

I'm definitely going to continue with this goal. Maybe I'm going to use myfitnesspal again. It's just really hard to measure what I'm eating. I'm not cooking alone for lunch. But I'll try to at least roughly track. At the moment I don't want to lose much more weight. I just want to try to not gain ist all back.

Week 4 ✔✘✔✔✘✘✔                                     66% B (Bonus: ✔:star:)
                                                                           ~75%   ~B

Goal Two: Don't let them outrun you Grade: 86%, A (last challenge: 96%, A)

I only missed one yoga class and added dancing to my challenge for half of the time. But I didn't walk as often as last challenge and that's showing in my statistics. I still have to get in more at home exercise. On rainy or busy days I tend to not walk so much. On These days I should at least try to get in 20 minutes of yoga or do my tibetans. I'm still trying to make that a Habit, so I'll definitely go on with this goal. We have one week off University at the beginning of June. Maybe I should try doing one of these every day for ten days in a row then.

Week 4 ✘✔✔✔✔✔✘                                     71% B (Bonus: ✘)

Goal Three: Get your stuff done and don't give in the lethargy Grade: 118%, A+ (last challenge: 92%, A)

  • Study 15 hours a week again.
  • Bonus for getting all my homework done by Saturday evening.

This challenge I got in my 15 hours every week and managed to reach my milestones. I'll try to continue the good work. And definitely helped me, that I was working on homework on days, where I had to go to lessons and save Tuesday and Friday for my papers. I'm not going to aim for higher numbers because of what happened last challenge. Last challenge i had one week with >130% and afterwards I wasn't able to motivate myself for the following two weeks. It's better to get my stuff done every week and not stress myself out about getting in as much as possible.

Goal 3 Study                                                   (71/60 hours)

Week 1 ✔✔✔✔✔✔✔                                    120%   (18/15 hours;) A+ (Bonus: ✔:star:)
Week 2 ✘✘✔✔✔✔✘                                   100%  (15/15 hours;) A (Bonus: ✔:star:)
Week 3 ✔✔✔✔✔✔✘                                    153%  (23/15 hours;) A+ (Bonus: ✔:star:)
Week 4 ✘✔✔✘✔✔✔                                    100%    (15/15 hours; A) (Bonus: ✔:star:)
~ 118%  ~A+

Goal Four: To Do List

I wasn'tz able to get in stuff in the morning. Maybe I should instead aim for doing most of my stuff in the evening and stop jumping out of bad in the morning and trying to get everything done. That's just stressing me and I feel that my sleep is less good, when I'm already thinking about the stuff I still have to do in the morning. Like packing my bag. I wasn't Walking as much as I used to last challenge, because I was late and then took his grandfathers offer to drive us. All in all I got more housework done than last challenge. It definitely helped to write to do lists regularly and set priorities.

FINAL CHALLENGE GRADE: ~93% = A

ANY OTHER NOTES / COMMENTS:

Overall this challenge was more successful then last challenge. I compared the numbers of last challenge to this challenge. Not only did I get in more study time, I also didn't get less then my 15 hours every week. I managed to get my water in freggies in. But I think I had more cheat days. It just doesn't Show, because a cheat day is shown in the same way as a bad water day. So I can see this change only in my paper tracker. I did get in a lot of exercise and sometimes felt a Little dizzy. Especially on days, where it got hotter from one day to the other. Maybe I should really do some rough calory tracking again on days where I want to participate in the University Sport. Maybe I'm really not getting enough carbs. Or maybe I have to get a blood test done to see if my thyroid is overactive again.

I lost 3,5kg this challenge and got measured twice. I'll post my measurements in my battle log.
