KimShea
So, new here and trying to learn what I can, and especially want to try lifting. Would like to work my way up to powerlifting, but not ready for that yet. In my new quest for fitness, I've decided that the number on the scale is - perhaps for the first time in my life - not my primary goal. I did discover I sure as heck don't want it to go up, and I'd like it to go down, but those things are less important to me than they were in the past. I'm trying to decide what my goals are, though. What should I be shooting for? So I'm curious what others here are working toward on their fitness goals. I haven't decided mine yet, though I think to start I want to work my way up via dumbbells to being able to do a squat and bench press and maybe overhead press of the bar, and then eventually add weights to the dang thing. I'd like to learn how to do a deadlift. I want to look better and have a lower body fat %, but don't have a specific goal in mind on the number it should be. I need more specifics. Long range, I've always wanted to be able to through hike the big three trails. (Appalachian, Pacific Crest, Continental Divide) but realistically I'll not be able to do any of those until I can retire. I'd love some type of similar outdoorsy fitness goals that can be done in smaller timeframes. Or maybe section hike. I despise running. I did a half marathon a few years ago, and it was miserable. I don't really have a desire to ever do that again. I love being in the woods though. Maybe someday I can hike in Europe or something. If I'm gonna dream..... So what are your goals & dreams? 1 Quote Link to comment

farflight
I started tracking calories about 4 years ago when I asked a doctor (during a visit to rule out some other health complications/heart problems, was taking multiple medications) "What else can I do to improve my quality of life" to which he (and my wife) responded "Lose weight and get in better shape." I downloaded myfitnesspal and set it to lose .5 lb per week (wanted something manageable/not starving). Lost about 60-65 lbs thru diet alone. Rescued a dog and started walking. Since last september I started doing the body weight circuit from nerdfitness. I've kept with it to the present day about 3-5 times per week, and started adding walk/runs (with the dog) on the in between days. I really only started the journey with the goal of improving my health outcomes. As I've continued, I have come to realize that as I've dropped weight I don't seem to hate what I see in the mirror as much. I realize I need to work on self-esteem and being gracious to myself as well as those around me. Now I do I have a goal. My last PCP recommended a good goal weight of 200 lbs (I'm 6'2 and relatively large frame). I'd like to see some muscle definition (lower body fat) and just be the best version of me that I can be. I've slowly added dumbbells to some of the body weight circuits and was finally able to do my first REAL pushup at 33 years old. Next target is to do a REAL pullup and someday chin ups (just in case I ever am dangling from cliff). Small changes have really changed things for me. 1 Quote Fitbit username: farflight (would love to have more people on there) Getting life in order is a challenge worth doing. Improve immune system 3. Take a proper amount of time to achieve my goals. 4. Make my fitness goal measurable, attainable and time around. Quote Link to comment

This is the best place to be, it can take a long time for some people to get there so kudos to you! You will find that your body changes as your fitness improves and if you decide you want to work on your physical appearance at some point then that's fine too, but it probably won't ever be your highest priority again. Good health is kinda addictive. Quote I'd like to learn how to do a deadlift. I want to look better and have a lower body fat %, but don't have a specific goal in mind on the number it should be. I need more specifics. It's ok not to have a "goal weight", in fact I think it's actually better that way after all who really knows what they will/won't look like at any particular weight. You will find that you're guided more by your body and how it looks/feels that the number on the scale or bf%. I know that my "goal weight" was 11.5st (161lbs) but I'm currently sitting at 10st (140lbs) and I'm still looking at my Bingo Wings - that dodgy fat hanging around under my upper arms, with horror. Why does my body keep burning up my boobs and leaving my Bingo Wings in tact??? Not fair! Quote Long range, I've always wanted to be able to through hike the big three trails. I think your goals are awesome! I have a love of hiking and camping too, I hope to one day be able to recover enough to get back to it. That's one of my big goals. I don't know how often I say it but making slow, sustainable changes is the way to long term success. It's really good that you've recognised the need to be kind to yourself too, you deserve that. My own short term goals are to eat better (i.e. cut out bread), lose the Bingo Wings, and make as much of a recovery as I can (i.e do my physio!). I'm not making any real long term goals right now, I'm just focusing on what's in front of me. The Spider
My long term goal is to have the Spartan Trifecta within the next 10 years. My short term goal throughout these next ten years may seem somewhat convoluted, but it's this: I own a LOT of shirts (tees, buttons, dress, etc). Most of my t-shirts have shrunk just enough to show the edge of my belly button when I raise my hands above my head, but they fit otherwise. I want all of those shirts to be too tight on my arms and chest, so that I have to get rid of them. They're in perfect condition and I still like the design too much to simply donate/sell them. Honestly, if I could find these shirts (I bought them almost 10 years ago) in the next size up, I would get them. So to say that I know that I've reached this goal will be when I see and feel it. Another smaller goal will be to begin doing martial arts training again. I was, during high school, doing very well with martial arts training. Lots and lots of dynamic core and body weight style workouts, weight vests, along with good old swinging heavy swords and spears around (not to mention punching people and being punched in return). I didn't have a great diet, so I didn't look as good as I could have, so once I get somewhat better about my diet, which will help me reach the previously mentioned goal, I hope to get very serious about my martial training, and finish the curriculum that I had begun when I was 15. I figure if I get the appearance that I want by next year, I can begin training again. I hope to do a Spartan Sprint in September, but I'm not sure if my friends are still on board (it's a groomsmen gift from my wedding last year) since everyone has full time work. Heading to the gym after posting this, so I hope to be going to the gym and getting some good cardio for the next few months to be on my way to my next goal.
