Week 0: Monday

A sort of soft start to the pre-challenge warm up. I ate clean for most of the day but had an ice cream when we got home (fiance is a bad influence). Didn't log my meals, though - whoops.

It was a bit hellish all day with class photos of the kids. Have you ever tried herding 17 tiny drunks toddlers into neat formations and then getting them to hold a pose AND all smile at the same time, for four hours in the sun, WITH costume changes?

tumblr_inline_ofpmx1SyFn1r9ss08_500.gif

But I'm on early shift this week and took advantage of the hour between getting off work and catching the bus home to try out the new school swimming pool (and my underwater ipod). Unfortunately the earphones are a bit crappy so I only heard snatches of the story, , but my sister has offered to buy me a new pair for my birthday! Woot! Swam for about 40 minutes and it was wonderful, although I realised how swimming-unfit I have become. Well, only one way to fix that.  I am not used to listening to something while I swim so I was focusing on my breathing and missed chunks; I think it's forgivable to listen again from the beginning next time. This week is our last D&D session so as of the following week I should be able to swim on M-W-F.

I'm totally putting a load of laundry in right now just for the XP. The Texan bought us a dryer, which makes my job so much easier! Huzzah!

Swims: +1

Laundry: +1

Sweetness! I was sooooo happy when we finally got a dryer. I really dislike hanging clothes to dry.

We've got insanely high rails to hang them from, so I have to use this extendy pole with hooks on to lift the hangers up. Ugh. It's such a pain. Now all I have to do is dump things from one machine to another and then fold the glorious warm laundry... Aaaaaaaah...

Last time I was in the US I picked up a couple boxes of dryer sheets so now we are really living in luxury :)

Week 0: Tuesday

Nutrition: Urgh, roar, rage. I've been ordering delicious organic salads for lunch since there were no healthy options available. Eventually (after half the staff started ordering the food) the kitchen cottoned on and have started making a limited healthy option (generally a pile of lettuce with a couple of sprigs of broccoli, a slice or two of carrot, some kind of sesame dressing and some kind of meat - uninspired but at least not drowning in oil and carbs). But they only make it for the foreign staff (I object to this special treatment even though I benefit it because it is stupid and unfair). Anyway, I decided to give this week a try and see if I can continue to lose weight without having the nutritional info or luxury of choice for my lunch. Well, firstly, nope, because the meal is nutritionally unsatisfying so I end up still hungry even though I'm full of lettuce. And no, because it's boring and flavourless unless you drench it in dressing because they're incapable of using spices or herbs. And no, because I want that nutritional info. And today they didn't make enough so I had to wait 15 mins of my 30 min lunch break for them to pull together a plate for me. Grumble grumble starving kids in Africa but I'm hungry too grumble.

giphy.gif

So, to hell with that nonsense. Back to my tasty tasty salads, thank you very much.

Tonight I found a local delivery place that does salads. Tonight's was quinoa, chickpea, egg and raisins on a bed of lettuce and broccoli. YUM.

Nutrition +1

Swimming: Oh man, I can't believe how swimming unfit I am. I haven't swum laps properly in years - not since university. My back-rib and side-rib muscles hurt. I can barely move my arms. It feels gooooood. Definitely going to keep this up. I downloaded a swimming training app and might try to follow it although I don't like bringing my phone to the pool. Also, there's a bit of a snag with the time of my swimming workouts - they're trying to make the official time for teachers to use the school pool 5:30pm, but 4 seperate people told me I could use the EMPTY pool at 4 until Captain Bureaucrat With Modicum of Power came trotting along at 4:55 (when I was done) and told me, "The teacher swimming time is 5:30!" When I asked what the reason was, since the pool was not being used at the time I was there, and no one was going to use it, and the teacher who was finishing up when I got there said I could use the far unused lane anyway without any problems, he explained that, "The teacher swimming time is 5:30!" We contacted the higher-ups and explained that all the users of the pool, including both schools' PE teachers, the board, the principal, the head of the swimming pool, had agreed that 4pm was fine and if the pool was being used the teachers could ask permission to use one lane, and that coming at 4pm is not a problem because any problem that might arise has been solved by that policy. He smiled and said, "The teacher swimming time is 5:30!"

giphy.gif

Soooooooo let's see what happens there. Emails are whizzing back and forth. Maybe tomorrow I'll just hang around and get up to speed on school reports until 5:30. Grurgh.

Fitness:
Heading to gym after work.  Cue unexpected and late shark attack! Well, at least there won't be any Gurdris Imbabies coming along. And it made me think of a challenge caveat: workouts missed due to lunar phenomena will not count as missed.

Booky bedtime:

Currently reading the second A Court of Thorns and Roses book by Sarah J Maas but not enjoying it all that much.

Laundry loads: Took last night's second load out the dryer this morning, and folded the previous load while watching Doctor Who. Still need to put it all away though. Planning to do that as part of the apartment deep clean tonight.

7:24 pm - linen load is going in the dryer now, and we'll start cleaning when we've finished eating dinner.

I read your update and I found myself wondering when the teacher's swim time was - that man needs to be more clear about that. What a jobsworth, people like that suck.

Yeah, I think it's at 5:30 but I might need him to confirm that for me. I might be wrong; it might be 5:30 or it could be 5:30. #

Whoops, missed some daily updates.

7DzlajZNY5D0I.gif

Generally this soft start has been going okay except that all workouts have ceased while I'm attacked by sharks, and will resume next week. Diet-wise I tried out the school's healthy option for this week and it's bland and ineffective (portions are too big and it's still drenched in oil) so I'll go back to ordering my salads with nutritional info. I've been good at reading before sleeping. Laundry is a million times easier with the drier now. Swimming - I need to stop letting whether the Texan is swimming or not influence my desire/motivation. I wanted to swim a couple of times since Monday, today and on Tuesday, and let him talk me out of it with his tiredness. But we're swimming tomorrow, or at least I am and he can hang around waiting for me to get home to sort dinner out, so there.

In addition, I'm coming down with something; this week has been crazy with end of year workload. I haven't spent more than 5 minutes with my co-teacher and on Wednesday I didn't spend more than an hour with my students in our class because of all the damn meetings. Four day weekend coming up and I'm going to spend the first 24 hours asleep to try to kick this bug.

Details from last night's D&D game under the cut.

Spoiler

In other news, last night Gurdris (the original drunken dwarf barbarian who is the namesake of this quest and my nick change) completed her first quest as we concluded our D&D session. Her habit of dismembering her enemies and adding bits of them to her bag of holding paid off, as the beholder eyeball she licked gave her laser vision in one eye, and she was able to dodge some nasty traps by poking them with doppelganger arms. Finally, they took on the troll invasion of the town and she took a dump on the pile of troll corpses that she had built, before adding some of them to her bag too. As a brewer, she's been gathering lots of ingredients and now she's ready to make her finest ale yet. Of course, the speculators, god-dog poop, and other weirdly magical and mysterious items give the brew some kind of perception-altering capabilities which (from her perspective) rip holes in space time and allow her to slip into parallel universes (aka other game systems). She's going to pop into a friend's pathfinder game (complete with backstory but we'll decide if magic from one realm works in another or if her beholder's eye is nullified) and that should be awesome. Super exciting.

Day -1 (Challenge officially starts tomorrow)

Well, yup. I'm fully sick. Did a saline rinse last night before bed, which helped. I know it's gross but it's soooo satisfying...

tumblr_n6d1u1BLQl1rcqnnxo3_500.gif

Had a little second supper as well because I felt like the salad wasn't enough and I needed some soup to help with the throat infection I'm developing, and neener neener the number on the scale was still down this morning. Drinking hot water (which is supposed to cure every ailment) does soothe my throat so I guess there's some wisdom in it. Adding coffee to the hot water is even better.

giphy.gif

Nutrition: +1 for salad, -1 for overeating, total: 0

Haven't made it to the gym since last Thursday because of shark week. But that's ok. I brought my swimsuit and I'll see if I feel well enough after work to go swim. I think it might help my sinuses, actually... Fingers crossed.  Adjusting the goal - instead of logging, I am changing it to "eating healthy options" - so, no junk.

Booky bedtime: Being sick made me pass out before I even turned on my kindle. Whoops.

Laundry: Woooooooot I love my new dryer so muuuuch. So much easier now. +1

Score for Week 0:

Nutrition: 4/5
Fitness: 2/5
Books: 4/5
Laundry: 5/5
Swimming:  2/5

Day 1:

The horror, the horror! I sneezed so hard at the end of the work day yesterday that something ruptured in my sinuses and I had bloody nose clots. Also had 4 huge boxes of teacher gifts for Dragon Boat festival (Fruit! Bamboo-wrapped rice and meat thingies! Salted duck eggs...! A year's supply of rice!) that I had to carry to the bus and had nowhere to store them, so no swimming. Felt pretty proud of myself carrying all the heavy things though, without assistance.

QWkNH.gif

Got home, made some of the rice things for us, and dragged myself into bed around 7pm, where I passed out until about midnight. The Texan's band was playing a birthday party so I was all alone. Blocked nose, went to blow it, and MORE blood. Sheeeeesh.

Spoiler

I swear I wasn't watching porn.

giphy.gif

So I did another saline rinse which took care of the remaining clots, and green stuff, and stopped the bleeding for a bit. Got to sleep, woke up when Drunky McDrunkface staggered in, made him a snack to prevent a hangover, read for a bit and went back to sleep.

thenug-UwjKW7hpiQ.gif

I still feel pretty crappy but at least I'm on track with nutrition and mindset goals - huge supply of fruit to eat before it goes bad and reading, although I am really finding A Court of Mist and Fury infuriating. I think I can handle doing some of my mini quest goals, which I forgot to post here... Ummmmm...

Swimming pool is closed for the long weekend, so I'm off the hook for that one. I guess I'll put away laundry later.

Cooking:  I'll spend this four day weekend on making my kitchen less crappy by organising the storage, developing some kind of workflow system, deep cleaning and buying the equipment we're missing.

- I can order some stuff online from my bed, so that counts, I guess!

Strength:  Plank and pushup practice every morning for the week.

- Oh god, ok. Let me do this. Be right back. *grunt grunt puff puff*

30 second plank, 5 full non-kneeling pushups but my form was atrocious.

Climbing:  Improving hanging grip strength in preparation for pull-ups by doing pull-up prep progression work (hanging for 10+ seconds, standing on a chair and lowering down, etc).
... here we go!

10 second hang.

Combat:  I am plagued by an army of villainous dust bunnies and poltergeists. I will defeat them by deep cleaning the whole damn house. (later in the month I'll work on decluttering and maintaining the defences)

giphy.gif

Sinus infections are the WORST.
