This is a continuation of my last challenge.

 

My base workout is what I call my PPD routine, which is Pullups, Pistols, Dips.  It's my upgraded variation of the plp routine posted by Chad Waterbury on t-nation in 2011.  In which we add 1 rep to each of the exercises every day, doing as many sets as it takes us to reach that day's total reps.

 

So when you see me post PPD9, for example, that means I'm doing 9 pullups, 9 pistols (per leg), and 9 dips this day.  But it also means I probably did them as sets of like 3,2,2,1,1.

 

You'll also see me post about doing additional muscleup-oriented exercises/drills beyond the base workout.  Generally 1 or 2 extras on any given day.

 

The Man Behind the Posts:  I'm the almost-40 dad of a 1-year old girl who was born with a heart defect; she had three surgeries in her first five months.  I retired from the workforce to be at home raising her.  Happy to talk about it, if anybody is interested and has questions/conversation.

Nice goal! Muscle Ups are very challenging. Is your goal for this challenge to get 1 kipping muscle up by the end of the challenge or are you hoping for more/ non-kipping? Here to cheer you on either way :)

This is a multi-challenge goal.  It's going to take time.  I'll be delighted to kip a muscleup.  Heck, I'd be thrilled to Glide Kip my way onto the bar.  But I'm aiming for strict muscleups too.

My younger brother's son had a similar situation with his son needing two open heart surgeries in his first 6 months (congenital heart defect).  it's been 8 years now and the kid is still going strong and wreaking havoc :)

Yeah, docs tell me she'll be able to do what kids do.  Just that she might get tired quicker.

Today was PPD 10.  

 

I had poor sleep the last two nights, which does effect recovery, so there's that.  After finishing my last reps, I laid down, and within a few minutes passed out for an hour.

 

Getting a nap in the daytime is very, very rare for me.  

 

Anyway.  No additions to the workout today.  Tonight's goal is a full night's sleep, and we'll tackle tomorrow when it gets here.

Did PPD 12 + log rolls

 

Caught the charity edition of Ninja Warrior tonight.  Fun seeing some ninja veterans (yay Kacy!) coaching the actors through the obstacles.  I'm not an Arrow fan - I find the show insanely boring.   But Stephen Amell did really well on the course.

PPD 14 down.  That makes two weeks straight of progressing pullups, pistols, and dips every day.

Did gliding on the bar as my side item.

 

And I discovered the memrise app.  I can now write sushi in hiragana.  (The important things in life.)

YEAH! I was really happy to see Stephen Amell kick butt on the ANW course. I only watched some of the show because it's just a soap opera with more masks, but for some reason I just really enjoyed his commitment to stunts and fitness. :)

What is gliding on the bar? Is that like the typewriter motion where you go side to side?

I spent the past week visiting relatives.  Didn't do any PPD workout.  Did canoe-fish down a river.

 

Taking a week off put a dent in my endurance. Rather than fight it or fuss about it, I accepted it and backed down to PPD Day 1 today.   No biggie.  It's only 16 days to get back to where I left off on total work volume. 

 

My Day 1 pullup, pistol, and dip are all much stronger today than they were on the previous "day 1".  My pull is higher, my pistol is smoother, my dip is a fuller range of motion compared to what they were 3 weeks ago.

 

In other news, Mrs H took a new job in a nearby town, but it's too far for a comfortable commute.  So we're house hunting, and moving soon.

Stringer day 1 = clearly visible improvement!

 

Congratulations to Mrs. H on the new job, but house hunting and moving sounds like it is gonna suck

Back up to PPD day 7.

 

May not be moving after all.  There were literally three houses for sale in our price range.  Three.  Two of them sucked and I refuse to spend money on them.  The third was decent, but has one glaringly bad problem I just can't -- 6 and 1/2 foot ceilings.  Ya.  Seriously.
