You guys, I haven't done a challenge here in, like, two years. HI. SORRY. I'm here now! And diving in to respawn, re-invent myself a little bit, and dig into what I want the next level of my life to look like.

As usual, I want to do ALL THE THINGS, and this barely scratches the surface...

 

But I've dutifully selected ONLY FOUR things for this challenge. With a tiny bonus side goal that I couldn't resist including, even if I don't focus on it this month. 

 

Inspired by this article on identity-based habits, I'm phrasing my goals this time around as things I will be endeavoring to believe about, and prove to, myself:

 

#1: [MOVEMENT] I AM A PERSON WHO EXERCISES REGULARLY.

 

This week will mark the eighth week in a row that I've gone to classes at my new awesome gym at least 3x/week, even when I was traveling (shooting for 4x this week). This is mega huge to me. I'm gonna keep it up: minimum of three classes per week. This gym is awesome - fun people, natural movement, heavy lifting, high intensity work, agility, nature... it's great. It's not cheap, but it's getting me out of the house (yay working from home), meeting new people, learning new things, and having fun. Worth it as long as I keep going regularly. Did I mention how proud of myself I am for my 8 week streak??

 

#2: [NOURISHMENT] I AM A PERSON WHO LIMITS SUGAR. *

 

Okay, I reserve the right to change this one - I'm still not sure which aspect of nutritional goals I'm going to focus on. Meal prep? Veggies? Protein? Snacking? I think sugar will have the biggest impact. I'm currently reading Food Freedom Forever and highly recommend it, so I'll keep working on how I'll quantify this for the challenge. Track food and eat less than 30g of sugar each day? No spontaneous desserts; planned indulgences only? We'll see. Open to suggestions. I want to move away from tracking food, but I'm not averse to it.

 

#3: [MENTAL HEALTH] I AM A PERSON WHO MEDITATES. *

 

This one is going to be the toughest for me. I have never successfully created a meditation habit. Even now I'm tempted to make it a generic "ten minutes per day of focused self-care!" mission, and include journaling, yoga, walking, whatever. We'll see. Meditation would be really good for me.

 

#4: [LIFE: FINANCIAL HEALTH] I AM A PERSON WHO STICKS TO A BUDGET.

 

Second hardest one, helloooo. I have a good credit score, but still have credit card debt (and let's not talk about student loans). The housing market is insane in Portland, I'm engaged and about to start planning a wedding with my favorite nerd (!!!?!!?!), I'm officially in my "late 20s" as of this week's birthday (??!!!?!), and it's just fucking time to get my financial shit together and stop living like a college student who makes $80 impulse purchases from Lululemon (but I get a 25% off trainer discount you guyssssssssss). So this time around, I'm setting a non-negotiable budget for food and miscellaneous things (the categories I always go over in). And I'm not charging a damn thing.

 

BONUS THINGS. I'm still slowly trying to work towards a handstand and have been playing with some languages in Duolingo (how do they still not have Mandarin, I'm losing all my skillz, 很不好), and it would be great to keep those up too.

Just went to my third gym class this week (not counting a bonus yoga class yesterday), woohoo! And planning to go tomorrow. I tried to make pumpkin pancakes the same way I make banana pancakes (basically eggs, banana, vanilla, cinnamon) and... meh. Can barely taste the pumpkin :( Oh well. It's a good excuse to slather almond butter on something. 

 

Anyone reading this play D&D or Pathfinder? I'm going to Paizo Con this weekend! Last minute decision and probably won't spend all that much time at the con itself - the GM for my current obsession, the Glass Cannon Podcast, announced this week that he's going to be there, and we're going to go meet him and OMG I'M REALLY EXCITED. I'm a totally new player when it comes to RPGs (can you still say that after 2 years? we've tried several different systems so I still feel like I have no clue what I'm doing) but I love it. 

 

For those of you who don't know, I've worked several Renaissance Festivals (Bristol WI and AZRF, also been to the MN and Carolina Faires). Oregon is having a two-weekend pop-up Faire in a few weeks. I'm a little nervous, because I've only ever been to the "legit," 9-week Faires set in permanent structures instead of tents, but my RPG group is going to get dressed up and go. Since I don't have to take my costume on a plane this time, I finally get to include my giant hat and (real, it'll be peace-tied) sword:

Found you! Your costume looks awesome ^_^

I play a bit of DnD (a bit? twice a week and occasionally in a lunch as well)... mostly 5th ed, but I've played some Pathfinder (dropped that game because three a week was too many), some swords and wizardry and some basic a while ago. 

I'm learning Mandarin at the moment, and it goes out of my head so fast, I have to be constantly revising if I want to keep the words I've learned in my head :P I finish this class next week and have over a month before the next class starts... no idea how I'll keep that in my head for that long without class O_O

HI I'M STILL ALIVE I PROMISE.

 

Fairly good start so far. Haven't missed any workouts (bonus birthday yoga class today!). Meditated twice so far this week (WHO AM I WHAT'S HAPPENING). Haven't made any nonessential purchases. Woo!

 

The only one I'm struggling with is the nutrition one - decided I was going to try to limit sugar/grain to 3x per week. I'm already at 3. It's Wednesday. And today is my birthday. Oops! So far the culprits are sourdough bread for a sandwich on Sunday (sourdough is LIFE), a flour tortilla when I tried to make a lettuce wrap taco and it fell apart and I gave up on Monday, and a decaf latte yesterday (I think Starbucks puts in 3 pumps for a tall latte; I asked them to only put in one, but still, I feel like that counts against my goals). 

 

As my hero Jen Sinkler (Camp NF headmaster and all-around badass coach) says, "Oh well, girl." 

 

Things are going pretty great otherwise! Went to Paizo Con in Seattle and met the world's most benevolent GM, Troy Lavallee of the Glass Cannon Podcast - IT WAS AMAZING. Going to watch some of the NW CrossFit Regionals on Saturday and going to see Wonder Woman on Sunday!

Week one check-in! Mixed bag.

 

1: Movement

Yep! Three times at the gym (this makes nine weeks in a row) plus a yoga class on my birthday. Also, I won entry to my gym's six-week MovNat seminar that starts next week, so it'll be easy to hit 3x a week - I might end up at 5x, even.

 

2: Nourishment

I'm still making progress towards my weight goal (want to come down just a few more pounds), but I totally failed on the sugar/grain thing. I literally had something with either sugar or grain in it every day this week. Hello, wake-up call.

 

3: Meditation/Self-care

Eeeeh. I've meditated 3/5 times this week. It's a start. I've done other things for self-care as well, at least.

 

4: Budget

Yep! So far I haven't made any unplanned or impulse purchases. 

 

Off to see a few events at the CrossFit West Regionals, and seeing Wonder Woman tomorrow! Hope everyone has an excellent weekend! :)
