Big Show: Chapter Three - The Respawn

Big_Show

Recommended Posts

I'm back!  Better late than never!

Last challenge finished abruptly as I had to prioritise sorting out some Life Stuff instead of updating my thread, and unfortunately I let other things slide as well along the way.  But now that's mostly dealt with, so I'm back at it again!  Again.

I'm still staying away from home five nights a week for work unfortunately, but now I've figured out what does and doesn't work with this kind of lifestyle in this location I should be able to have a more successful four weeks this time around.  And (touch wood) for the next challenge I'll potentially be somewhere closer to home, which'll make life a lot easier!

But we'll burn that bridge when we get to it in Chapter Four.  First up, Chapter Three - time to knuckle down, get my eating right again, rebuild my aerobic base while having to cram all my running into the weekdays, and prioritising gym trips at the weekend as well.  While also getting my OU work done, working a job, and maintaining my fledgeling relationship.  Yay for forward planning!

I'll post my updated scoring mechanics in the next post - the only main difference this time round is that I'm giving Intermittent Fasting a go during the week.  I suspect it will help me with my tendency to snack at work, and it kind fits with my food/cooking arrangements at the B&B too (see below for the scoring mechanism).

I'm quite excited to be back into a challenge properly again.  No more half-arsing it!

Week 1, Day 2

Started on Day 2 as it was the first day back at work after the bank holiday weekend.  Very pleased to have a short week ahead this time!

Work went ok as usual, got a bit peckish halfway through the morning so I drank loads more water instead.  I was pissing like a racehorse for the next couple of hours, but I stuck to my IF window and that's what matters.

After work it was straight out for a run - unfortunately I've been nursing a really tight pair of calf muscles this last week so it couldn't be very far, but a short run was better than no run - 2.5M in 21:31 @ 8:17/mile average.  I then spent the evening in my room in the B&B doing my OU work, with intermitten breaks for foam-rolling, yoga, and press-ups.

Oh yeah, the press-ups - I completely forgot that years ago I bought the 7 Weeks to 100 Push-Ups book and promptly forgot about it.  I may have made a couple of half-arsed attempts over the years, but never really committed to it.  Well, it seems like now I have the perfect reason to crack on with them, seeing as I have no access to a gym during the week!

My initial test score was comically low, therefore I am starting on the Beginnner 2 programme.  You do the prescribed sets with a minute's rest in between, then for the last set you do as many as you can (with a minimum standard specified).  If you manage the week, you progress to the next.  If not, you repeat until you do.

Today was 2/3/2/2/3+(7) = 16 total.  The numbers in a few weeks look a lot more intimidating, so I'm carefully not looking at them any more and treating this as an exercise in Greasing the Groove.

Scoring

+2XP for the run

+1XP for press-ups

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for Yoga mini-session

+1XP for Trapfinding

+1XP for OU work (Book learning)

+1XP for IF (Workday rationing)

Day's score: +8XP

Week 1, Day 3

Funny night's sleep yesterday so I've been draggin' ass all day today (my mind still plays that phrase in a Tennessee accent thanks to the @wovercast...) but with therapeutic quantities of coffee I seemed to make it through the day.  Didn't eat anything until lunchtime, although did then get a chocolate bar with my lunch in the canteen without thinking about it.  Better watch out for that in future.

Another run after work again today, this time a little bit further and a little bit faster - that's probably just because of the route itself though rather than anything else.  Calf muscles felt a bit looser again, so that foam-rolling and yoga have already had a noticeable effect.  3.7M in 30:25 @ 8:07/mile av.

After that it was another night spent doing OU work in my room, with breaks for foam-rolling and yoga.  And of course Day 2 of the press-ups (there are three sessions per week): 3/4/2/3/4+(10) = 22 total.  Gonna do Day 3 tomorrow, and then in future try to space them out with a rest day in between.  Think I'll need that when it gets up to grown-up figures...

Tomorrow evening looks to be like more of the same - this is very much going to be the pattern for my weekday updates I hope, I want to get the consistency nailed in for four weeks where I can!

Also, I need to get back on doing my handstand practice (I couldn't in the last challenge due to having bursitis) otherwise @miss_marissa will start giving me grief again...

+3XP for the run

Week 1, Day 4

Today was more of the same really - up early and went to work.  Came perilously close to eating biscuits but persevered with my IF until the window opened at 12noon and went for lunch.

This week I've been going for the roast dinner option in the canteen - a couple of slices of freshly roasted meat (today was pork :) ), 5 roast potatoes, and a big ladle of whatever veg they have fresh that day.  Plus today I had gravy too, because roast pork.  Come at me bro.

After work i was out for a run again - ran out until my Garmin said I'd run 2.5M, added another hundred yards for good measure, stopped briefly to stretch out my calves, then ran back again.  Thankfully it wasn't quite as hot as it was last week, but I definitely was a big sweaty bear by the end of it.  Also fairly certain my new running vests lend themselves to a fair amount of side-boob (not side-moob any more thankfully) but 1) it means I'm better ventilated (see above), and 2) they're obviously lucky bastards for seeing that.  Overal 5.1M in 42:28 @ 8:16/mile average - plan for next week is to add a mile or so to the Tuesday & Thursday runs while keeping the Wednesday run the same, with the eventual goal of turning the Tuesday run into an interval session and Thursdays into Long Run night.

Then it was back to crack on with more OU work!  Of course it was.  With a brief break just before 8pm to make my dinner before the window shut, and a slightly longer break earlier on to chat with the Welshman on the phone - we've just booked a weekend holiday away with his best mate & his wife (the best mate's wife, just to clarify that...) at Centre Parcs & Go Ape!  This will involve high ropes courses, canoeing on the lake, forest walks (through the actual Sherwood Forest no less), very competitive crazy golf, and I shall also be taking some card games along too.  Can.  Not.  Wait.

But yeah, also did my foam-rolling, more OU work, but forgot about the yoga until too late.  Plan is now to do a double session tomorrow to make up for it!  Press-ups also got done - today's effort was 4/5/4/4/5+(11) = 28; that gives me a total of 66 for Week 1.  Of course I have a spreadsheet to track it as it all goes, on, who would have thought otherwise...?

Funny night's sleep yesterday so I've been draggin' ass all day today (my mind still plays that phrase in a Tennessee accent thanks to the @wovercast...)

The other day I saw a neighbor walking along the road and I stopped to talk. I started with "Whatcha know good?"  in a very southern (even for me) accent. He had no clue. I had to translate to "How are you?"

Ok, so I basically didn't get round to posting at all in Week 2.  There's a surprise.

I had a massive amount of schoolwork to get done, plus some other general adulting, and by the time I got round to posting on here I just wanted to go to bed to be honest!  So, not logging means no XP.  Tough for me, and so we start back up again with what I think is Week 3, Day 1?

Today I was back at work and stuck to my IF window again.  Still getting used to it, but the hanger pangs mid-morning aren't as bad as they used to be now.  Or at least I am coping with them better by drinking a shedload of water when they come calling...

After work I headed out for my run - I had to keep stopping every so often to stretch out my ridiculously tight calves, but overall time spent running was 6.2M in 51:58 @ 8:22/mile av.  I have been neglecting this far too much and coming up with excuses, so my one goal this evening to was get round my 10k route in whatever form I could.  Next time it will be easier.

Also done my yoga (ow), my foam-rolling (double ow), and I'm repeating Week 2 of the 100 press-up programme as I didn't get all the workouts in this week.  Today it was 4/6/4/4/7+(10).

Clearing up some more admin tonight, then for the rest of the week it'll be hitting the books once more after I've done my day's exercise.  I need to get properly caught up and ahead as I just booked a short holiday with the Welshman - 4 nights in Benidorm in the middle of August.  So I need to be up to date, or even ahead, by then.  And it also means I have 8 1/2 weeks to uncover whatever beach body is hidden under my extra rolls of insulation right now...

Week 3, Day 2

Today has been a good day.  I hit my IF window at midday (was bloody starving when I got there though), managed to avoid the temptation to eat any fruit pastilles after my lunch, and then went for a short run after work.

It felt a bit rubbish and slow at first to be honest, but about three quarters of the way through my legs seemed to loosen up and wake up a bit.  Which was much nicer.  Overall 3.7M in 31:27 @ 8:25/mile average.  Off out again for tomorrow - hopefully for a slightly longer one again if my calf muscles don't feel too tight.  I have done my foam-rolling and yoga mini-session though, so they should be feeling ok with a bit of luck.

The rest of this evening was mainly spent doing a bit of adulting (bills etc.) and then cracking on with more OU work - tomorrow will be yet more work unfortunately!

Week 3, Day 3

Same old, same old - my weekdays are pretty boring up here.  Got back from work, went for a run, achilles was getting a bit sore from doing three days in a row and so I decided to definitely rest on Thursday.  It also slowed me down quite a bit over the last couple of miles.   Overall 6.2M in 52:32 @ 8:27/mile average.

Stuck to my IF window but I'm certain I'm eating too much throughout the day - made the decision to go back to full MFP logging starting from Monday.

Scoring

+6XP for the run

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for yoga

+1XP for Trapfinding

+1XP for OU study session

+1XP for sticking the IF window (workday rationing)

Day's score: +11XP

Stash the gold pieces: YNAB fully rationalised
Beginner acrobatics: 0/3

Previous total: 392XP

Current total: 403XP (next level at 550XP)

Week 3, Day 4

Did shopping straight after work, then cracked on with OU work for a few hours as it was a rest day.  Made time for breaks to do my yoga, foam-rolling, and also today's press-ups.

Week 2, Day 2: 5/7/5/5/8+(13) = 35 total.  Doesn't seem like much, but it's over twice as many in total as Week 1, Day 1 was (16).  I'll take it,

Scoring

+1XP for the press-ups

No updates over the weekend - I'm off to Center Parcs with the Welshman, the Welshman's best mate, and the Welshman's best mate's wife (carefully worded to avoid jokes about the Welshman having a wife...) for those of you that don't have it in your country, there's a massive indoor swimming pool with rapids, a big lake with loads of things you can do, and it's right in the middle of Sherwood Forest (yes, THAT Sherwood forest) so there are loads of outdoor activities too.  Should be a fun weekend, and also a very active one - we're going to Go Ape! too!

End of Week 3

That weekend was so much fun!  We did loads - Go Ape! on the Saturday morning, which was two hours of climbing round rope ladders, swinging into cargo nets, and going down ziplines - lunchtime invovled a massive chocolate pancake covered in ice cream and more chocolate, and I had definitely earned it by then!  It was followed by an afternoon playing in the swimming pool with its rapids and flumes, so by the time we got back to the chalet after dinner that night all four of us were pretty much spark out!

Sunday was similar - crazy golf, more swimming, another barbecue, and lots of walking too.  All in all a great time.

No work on my goals while I was there, but no harm done either!

Week 3 Scoring

+3XP for Stash the gold pieces (YNAB fully rationalised)

Week 4, Day 1

I acheived nothing today.  The office was boiling hot, my bedroom was boiling hot, and between the two of them it sapped all energy I had left.  Pretty sure I was also dead from the weekend still though.

I did, however, download the MFP app again and start logging all my food.  Not exactly the best macros, but it was under my calorie target and I didn't get hungry, so that's a start.  Hit my IF window as well!

Week 4, Day 2

A better day.  A much cooler day!  Wandered down the road to sit in the park at lunchtime, which handily removed some of the temptations to buy extra food...

A run after work occurred as well.  My calf muscles are still horribly tight so I'm limiting the distances at the moment.   This always happens when i run on consecutive days regularly, but after tomorrow I won't be doing that any more and hopefully they'll ease off a bit again.  3.7M in 32:01 @ 8:35/mile average.

Spent the evening adulting my admin out of the way, so tomorrow I'm all clear to just go for a run and then get on with my OU work.  Seriously cannot wait until I'm back in my flat in the evenings and all weekend, it'll be so much easier...

Oh yeah, did Day 3 of last week's press-ups too (a tad belatedly, admittedly...) - 6/8/6/6/11(9+)

Scoring

+3XP for the run

+1XP for the press-ups

+1XP for foam rolling

+1XP for yoga

+1XP for Trapfinding

Day's score: +8XP

Stash the gold pieces: YNAB fully rationalised
