I wasn't particularly looking forward to this challenge until I realized I could start now and roll the 2 week break into a proper 6 week challenge.  

6 week challenge activate!

Power

I'll be starting Cycle II of 5/3/1.  Spreadsheet is here.  I'll be lifting approximately twice a week with 2 big lifts each day plus some accessory work, usually determined on the fly. 

 

Grace

I'll be continuing with Jeff Galloway's running principles.  The theory is every 2 weeks I test my 1 mile pace and use that to determine the training walk/run pace.  Each week consists of 2 short runs and 1 'long' run.  Every 2 weeks that long run will include a retest of the 1 mile pace.  As part of Galloway's program, there are also 3 walk or cross train days.  2 of those cross train days will be my lifting days, the 3rd will be a hammer day.  That leaves 1 rest day per week.  I just completed my 1 mile test run this past weekend so I'll do that again in 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and then on the last weekend.  I am hoping for improvement each time.  

The hammer workout will be some combination of Shovelglove, tire swings, or a short hammer run but the hammer will be neglected no more.  

 

Here is the tentative workout schedule for the challenge:

Wisdom

My current goal is to be somewhere between logging food on MFP and intuitive eating.  I have been logging food, with a 'goal' in mind but I'm not that concerned about the goal as long as I am making decent choices and eating when I am hungry.  I usually go most of the day eating primal, paleo + dairy, and then add some grains to dinner.  I'd like to have grains a bit less with dinner, either by having it less often, choosing better grain choices, or just smaller portions.  Restricting them altogether isn't ideal.  I tried tracking variances last challenge but the line between a variance and making a choice was getting blurry so I'm abandoning that.  I do have some guidelines to follow:

  • Plan the week's menu ahead and batch cook. 
  • Meal planning must include some veggies with dinner
  • Eat all the freggies!  Ideally no more than 1 meal without freggies a day but overall just keep track and aim for at least 3-5 freggies a day Edit for SMART goal: Get at least 4 servings of freggies a day.
  • limit sweets.  A little ice cream is OK some nights, maybe some chocolate, but stay in control and just don't go overboard. Edit for SMART goal: No more than 1 sweet treat a day. 
  • Focus on how food choices will make me feel.  Will it satisfy my hunger? Will it make me feel bloated and full?  I don't know why I make goals like this.  I never stop and think about this when I am deciding on foods.  My intention was to integrate some intuitive eating so I am not relying as heavily on the rules but it's not working.  

 

Wonder

Does anyone else feel suffocated by time?  It just keeps moving and there is no stopping it, whether you have something to hold onto or not.  The summer is quickly coming to an end.  This challenge ends a week and a half before the kids start school again and during that time is our family vacation.  So the 6 weeks of this challenge mark what's left of my summer.   I just don't want to squander it.  I have a lot of crochet projects to work on for an online auction fundraiser I am planning but I also need to be present for others and take some time to relax.  I've started a list in my bujo of some summer projects and to-dos.  I'd like to look back the summer and have something to show for it and have experiences we can remember.  

EDITED: This goal isn't very SMART either.  Now that I am consumed by crocheting for this fundraiser, I am not making much time for anything else, fun or adulting.  I need to get back to filling in my bujo and making plans.  Goal: Cross 3 things off my list each week.  Do at least 1 fun activity per week with family - with the exception for the 1 week I am on my own.

I know!  What happened to those days!?  It's not just the summer either. Each week goes by fast, summer goes by fast, each year is faster than the next, I kee get older!  AAAGHH I need a time machine.

I've only just taught myself crochet and knitting last year.  Well, my grandam taught me to chain stitch about a billing times when I was a kid but it never went further than that and I kept forgetting how to do it.  I really like it now that I can actually follow a pattern and make a complete project.

Week -1 Days 1

First day of the 6 week challenge and Peach decided to bake cookies!  I will say she did a very good job. ;) 

 

Power - Nothing scheduled

 

Grace - Nothing scheduled

 

Wisdom - So the first day of the challenge and I had no workouts scheduled.  The only thing I had to do was eat right.  Naturally, I had to test out Peach's cookies...  but I didn't need the 2 that followed that.  On the positive side, other than a few crushed Doritos in my taco salad, those cookies were the only grains I had.  Scratch that.  I rememebered I also had some baked potato chips for a late evening snack.  

Freggies - 5

 

Wonder -  Obviously I worked on some crochet.  Qbert was tasked with researching how he can raise some money for his own trip.  We spent some time going over his plan.  He's got a list of yard work and dog walking and he's going to hit the neighborhood tonight.  He also came up with an idea to do some LiveStreaming since he plays video games all day while we are at work.  Any one know anything about this?

Ok, first, how awesome was the Wonder Woman movie? So amazing!!!!

 

Second, following. 

 

Third, I feel like I don't have enough time for anything these days. I'm taking a class that is requiring more studying than almost any other class I've had and now I don't have as much time to study as I have had in the past. Ugh. I feel you on the time thing. 

 

Crochet all the things!!! I've actually started knitting again. It's very relaxing in a very stressful world.

It was amazing!  I have been waiting for that since I was like 10!  

 

I want to have time to do all the things but I want to do them leisurely and not have to overdo it and do everything at once!  That class definitely sounds stressful.  Maybe knitting is a good idea.  But then you need more time!  It's an endless cycle.

So my son has a live-stream set up. It seems to be all the rage. You can absolutely get started for free, but it's kind of hit or miss unless you artificially inflate your viewings (by that I mean, have all of your family and friends watch so his numbers go up). Unless he gets hit with some magical dumb luck. There is definitely a measure of internet safety, but I doubt that will be an issue because I am certain you taught your children well. 

 

I can talk to him this weekend more if you want some more info, but I'd not hold my breath on having it be a money-maker.

I sort of expected that it's not an automatic money maker... much like Youtube sensations.  But I didn't really want to burst his bubble.  Reality can do that for me.  We did discuss making sure he is never on screen and his real name, etc is never included, the standard internet safety.  It's good to know there isn't some any additional risk.

Week -1 Days 2

It was a bit of a crazy day. Well not that crazy really, just some hiccups in our routine.  And I got a warning from the kids that LS was in a foul mood.  That doesn't make one look forward to going home.  But he was out for his walk when I got home and he seemed to have calmed down by the time he was home.  I tried extra hard not to be defensive immediately.  Qbert was working on his flyer for yard work so I stuck around to help with that and make sure I was home while he was out knocking on doors.  This delayed my run and my dinner since I didn't want to eat dinner before the run. 

 

Power - Nothing scheduled

 

Grace - I went for a short run.  I had planned to do it right when I got home but due to the other events I put it off to make sure it was a good time for everyone when I went.  My knee was bonkers for the run and it really messed up my stride.  My short run was more like a short shuffle.  But my pace wasn't too terrible.  My running interval changed to 20 sec run/20 sec walk so that helped.  I'm sure when I can go out on a good run when my knee is behaving the time will be much better.  

 

Wisdom - In my typical fashion, I felt a bit guilty yesterday and felt like I didn't really eat that well but in retrospect it wasn't all that bad.  I was a bit stressed when I got home so I had another cookie.  Once I realized my walk would be late and so would dinner, I had another cookie too.  By the time I had dinner, it was around 9pm and I was really hungry.  My taco salad was pretty heavy on the Doritos.  But I also wanted ice cream after dinner and I resisted that and any other snacks.  All meals prior to that were mostly paleo too.  So overall it was a good day.

Wonder -  More crochet and I spent some time with Qbert while he worked on his flier.

You can use a bigger hook to make it a little bigger, but yeah, it might be a little difficult at times.

Week -1 Days 3

 

 

Power - I killed it at the gym.  I'm in week 1 of the 2nd cycle.  My working max for both DL and OHP are pretty close to the last cycle, OHP is a tad higher and DL is the same.  The lifts felt MUCH better this time.  I could tell my form was better and I still felt like I was pushing myself.  I think I needed that first cycle just to get lossed up again.  I followed up with 2 supersets of knee pushups and long arm planks.  Spreadsheet updated.

 

Grace - Nothing scheduled

 

Wisdom - I can't seem to go a day without sweets.  I did great all day and then treated myself to some ice cream... and some chocolate pudding.  Still managed plenty of freggies.

Wonder -  It was a pretty uneventful day.  Work was very busy.  We finalized the list of foods we are bringing to our friend's 4th of July Party.  I think I will be pretty busy Friday and Saturday cooking and baking.  The party is Saturday and then Peach and I leave Sunday morning for another drive up to Minnesota for the rest of the holiday.  I did manage some crochet yesterday.  I think I might be able to finish this blanket soon.  It will feel great to have something completed.

If you really can't go a day without something sweet maybe you should go ahead and plan it into your day. At least that way you can do away with any guilt associated with it.
