Welcome to my new challenge!

 

For the last two challenges I have been working a contract a few hundred miles from home, so I've been staying in a a B&B during the week and returning home on Friday evening, then heading back up north again on a Sunday afternoon.  But soon this will be no more - in a week I will be back home, and working on a contract within easy commuting distance of my nice little flat.

 

I have also had talks with the Welshman and he agrees that July needs to be a month which is both 1) cheaper, and 2) healthier than the last few have been.  This has admittedly been partly because we've been trying to fit all the fun couple time into around 43hrs instead of spacing contact out over a whole week.

 

So my challenge this time round is simply to eat regularly & healthy (sticking with doing IF during the week, tracking everything on MFP to make sure, and getting back into meal prep), finally going along and joining the local running club (now I am actually in town on Monday nights!), and reacquainting myself with my nice little gym (200 steps away from my building).  If I can get these fundamentals down pat again then the rest usually falls into place on its own.

 

Also, only 44 days until I'm on a beach in Spain!  Definitely need to shift a bit of timber by then!

Custom Challenge Mechanics

 

  • +1XP for every full mile run (i.e. 6.22M = 6XP)
    • races (excl. Parkrun/GRL) count as double points
  • +1XP for every exercise in a workout (i.e. 5x5 squats = 1XP)

  • +1XP for foam rolling (max. 1XP per day)

  • +1XP for NF Yoga mini-session, +2XP for a full session (max. 2XP per day)

 

Lvl 1 Swift Hunter special abilities:

  • Favoured Enemy:

    • Do extra damage against this foe

    • Specified exercise is now worth 2XP instead of 1XP

    • At higher levels the amount of damage done can also increase

  • Track:

    • Find tracks and follow them over difficult terrain

    • +1XP for any run involving a significant offroad potion (i.e. trails, XC, fell races, etc.)

  • Skirmish:

    • Deal extra precision damage to foes while moving quickly

    • +1XP for every dedicated interval workout performed

    • Amount of damage caused increases at higher levels

  • Trapfinding:

    • Use the Search skill to locate traps and then Disable Device to bypass/disarm them

    • +1XP for reviewing self-care list against my current life/actions and adjusting things accordingly (max. 1XP per day)

    • Effectiveness increases at higher levels

 

Lvl 2 Swift Hunter spcial ability:

  • Combat Style: Shapeshifting
    • Bear form
    • XP to be assigned for being the best version of myself, making difficult choices when they need to be made, and openly being me
    • Difficult to quanitfy, but it'll become apparent how it works as it happens

 

Side Quests

 

  1. Stash the gold pieces
    • log every transaction in YNAB and budget accordingly
    • +3XP weekly for keeping accounts rationalised
  2. Beginner acrobatics
    • +1XP per session (max. 3XP weekly)
    • follow the NF Handstands course - do specific work as part of warm-up/mobility section before every gym session, at least three times per week
  3. Book learning
    • OU study needs to be a priority
    • +1XP for every day containing a dedicated study session
  4. Workday rationing
    • Stick to the IF window of 12:00-20:00 while away from work during the week
    • +1XP for every successful day

I don't know what week this technically counts as, so I'm gonna go with:

 

Week -1, Day 2 (I think)

 

Failed at IF today.  Maybe I was just bored at work, but started eating my lunch at around 10am and finished it all by 11am.  Didn't buy a second lunch though, so in one sense I kind of won?  Definitely ate a bit more in the afternoon as a result though.  I blame whatever sick bastard keeps leaving chocolate hobnobs in arm's reach of me...

 

Went out for a run after work.  Really need to start upping the distances again so I am committing to this properly - next week I am going along to join the local running club back home, and that'll force me to be a bit more honest about my current lack of fitness!  Another run this week and one at the weekend too should round my week off nicely, plus I can start hitting the gym properly again then too  Calves were still pretty tight though, so I need to make extra sure I foam-roll them every night and do my damn yoga too.  Overall the run was 5.6M in 49:10 @ 8:45/mile av.

 

Cleared some other little jobs away tonight to leave tomorrow free for a big OU study fest, with a few breaks for press-ups, yoga etc. in the middle of it all.  As for now, I am going to get an early night and try to catch up on some damn sleep!

Week 0, Day 3

 

My challenge offically starts here!  I just finished my third day at the new job and it's going well so far.  I made it to the gym yesterday for a session, and today I think I figured out what my proper daily routine's gonna be.  So might as well crack on with the consistency - after all, only 35 days until Benidorm!

 

After work today I went for a run.  Brand new route, but I made sure I included the big hill up through the middle of the park.  Not the longest of routes - 3.9M in 32:41 @ 8:15/mile av. - but I'm trying to properly rebuild my base so all that matters is that I got a run in.  Next time will be a bit further and bit easier as a result!

 

I also stuck to my IF window despite really really wanting to eat my lunch mid-morning

Ok, so I did several gym trips last week but none of it got updated on the thread.  Therefore I get no points for it.  But my gym habit is definitely fired up again - just means I need to focus more on my running now, as I only went out once last week.

 

Week 1, Day 1

 

First day of the new week, and on the train home from work I downed a coffee to give myself some more energy for my run tonight.

 

Not a complex route - it involved a long uphill on the way out, which means it involved a long downhill on the way back.  And I do like a long downhill.  4.0M in 33:46 @ 8:16/mile average - the plan is for 5M on Wednesday and then 6M on Friday/Saturday to round the week off.

 

IF worked today - I was hungry in the morning but persevered until lunchtime, and then this evening I cooked a chicken "pie" (there's no base) from a sample of a Joe Wicks ly cookbook I had.  It was actually surprising nice, so I'll definitely be making it again!

 

Tomorrow is the gym.  I am looking forward to it already.

Hey there! I've missed the heck out of you :D So excited to see your Swift Hunter action is still moving forward - it really is the greatest class for you!!  I'm really glad things are settling down for you, too it sounds like you've had a crazy couple of months.  Here's to an awesome challenge :)

Week 1, Day 2

 

I seem to have spent all of today running out of time.

 

Didn't make it to noon before eating - I was so hungry I just had to dive in to one of my sarnies at 11am.  Not the end of the world, but gotta try again tomorrow!

 

Got back from work at the usual time, did a quick shopping trip for food, then headed to the gym for my Back & Biceps session.  It went well - I made progress on all the lifts, and next time round I'll be putting the weights up a bit for some of them.  Turns out I haven't quite lost as much strength as I thought I had.  Not quite as much, anyway.

 

Cooked a nice big bacon & veggie omelette for dinner, then got on with my various jobs for the evening (including the yoga & foam-rolling, obviously).  Then all of a sudden it's 10pm and I'm still writing this when I should be heading to bed!

 

So I'm off to bed.  Busy day ahead tomorrow.

Week 1 , Day 3

 

Quick post - heading out for dinner.

 

Didn't make it to the end of my IF window again - got really hungry by 11am again.  If this happens again tomorrow I guess I'll have to figure out why it's happening.

 

Ran after work - 5.2M in 43:11 @ 8:15/mile average.  It was bloody difficult to be honest; my calf muscles were ridiculously tight and remain so.  I stretched when I got in, did my yoga and my foam-rolling, but I think I'm really going to have to work a lot harder on this otherwise I'll have myself an injury coming soon in future.

This sucks for sure - but how great is it that you can notice this and spend a little extra care on it to prevent injury? Definitely an accomplishment.

Week 1, Day 4

 

Leg Day!  Two Thursdays in a row!  How's that for establishing a routine?

 

It went pretty well too - moved back up on my squats & deadlifts a notch, and the squats in particular felt a lot better today.  I always have form anxiety so it's an interesting feeling to actually enjoy them for a change.

 

Too tired and my feet were killing my afterwards so I didn't get much else done all evening - lay on the sofa watching TV instead.  I regret nothing.

Week 1, Day 5

 

SO tired last night, I managed to fall asleep again for half an hour after my usual alarms had finished!  Bit of a rush but still made it to work on time, although I was draggin' ass all day anyway.  Felt absolutely exhausted on the train home but I bought myself a coffee and dragged myself a long to the gym anyway for my second Back & Biceps session of the week.

 

And what a session it was!  I hit my target reps & sets for every exercised that I hadn't just put the weight up from after Tuesday's workout, including the pull-ups - these even (dare I say it) seemed easy for a change!  Also got talking to one of the guys who's regularly there at this time of the evening, so I'm starting to make gym friends finally.  Establishing a routine is good for me!

 

Made damn I did my foam-rolling & yoga mini-session after missing last night's ones, and now I'm soon going to head out to meet the Welshman for a drink.  We went out on Wednesday for a meal as we had made it to four months, and tonight we're going back to that restaurant to try the other desserts we wanted to have then (it didn't seem right to order four between the two of us...)

Week 1, Day 6

 

Early post today - had a lovely evening last night (if a little bit too late to bed...), then this morning I got spoilt with coffee & birthday presents in bed and then a lovely breakfast at Cosy Club!  Just been for a short token run to take my total for the week up to three (3.0M in 24:53 @ 8:04/mile av.) - a long time since I've done three in a week, and with three gym sessions too!  Feels really good to be back at it again.

 

Came up with my goals for what I want to achieve by my 35th birthday too - nice & simple, I'll waffle about them a bit tomorrow.  For now, I'm off with the Welshman to meet my family for a nice big country pub lunch.  Gonna be a lovely day with a food coma to come later on!

Week 1, Day 7

 

Took the rest day!  Saturday was awesome, had lots of fun and got spoilt rotten.  Then the evening carried on into the night... but seeing as I had already done three runs and three gym sessions during the week it was not a problem in the slightest!  Spent the afternoon at a big wedding celebration enjoying the last of the weekend, then went home and started building my birthday Lego set.  An excellent weekend all round.

Week 2, Day 1

 

Monday always hits with a bang after a weekend like that, doesn't it?  Made it through the day, did my healthy shopping, then went out for a run.  Felt like hard work towards the end but that would be because 1) it's a bit further than I've regularly run recently, and 2) my calf muscles tightened up again.  But the continued yoga & foam-rolling is easing that off, so it'll improve as the weeks go on.  Overall it was 6.2M in 51:44 @ 8:19/mile av.

 

Cooked dinner for tonight - chicken breasts wrapped in bacon, with new potatoes and random veg sauteed in a makeshift tomato sauce.  Also made enough for the next two days' lunches as well, so hopefully I'll be able to make it through my IF window for a change...

Week 2 Wrap-Up

 

Ok, so I didn't get round to updating during the week.  But to sum up:

- I started prepping proper meals for my lunches and so managed to start hitting my IF window consistently.

- I ran twice but my calves were still very tight at the end of it

- I did three gym workouts and made good progress on each of them - definitely enjoying being back in there regularly, and with it being literally just round the corner I am failing to find excuses to not go.

- i had a fantastic weekend at a little nearby festival

 

Unfortunately I did not get round to updating during the week, so tonnes of XP goes unclaimed once again.  Bugger.

 

Today I prepped my lunches for the next few days.  My diet is getting a major respawn - so many items of clothing I want to fit into better, and all the training in the world won't help if I'm eating rubbish!

 

Tomorrow night I have a wedding reception to go to after work (never been a +1 before, this should be interesting) but I'm hoping to fit in a full yoga session first beforehand.
