How Far Can You Go? (Running / Walking Distance PvP) [June 26th - Aug 5th]

Recommended Posts

How Far Can You Go?

This is nice and simple. How many miles can you run or walk in 6 weeks?

This PvP is going to start earlier than the challenge, as I know a lot of people are using the extra week break to run a 6 week challenge. So this will run from June 26th to Aug 5th (so log any miles you may have run / walked already!)

Track your miles on the spreadsheet here

The Rules

This is for running and walking only, no cycling!

Running / walking can be outdoors or on a treadmill

The challenge is for any miles that are additional to any "regular" miles you may do. So, for example, if you do a daily walk to work, this doesn't count.

Log all runs / walks on the spreadsheet.* It doesn't have to be full miles, part miles are allowed.

The person with the most amount of miles at the end of the challenge wins!

*If logging in kilometers, there is a formula to convert to miles. Please copy the mile conversion to the mile column (2 decimal places).

If you have a goal distance in mind, let us know what you are aiming for! I'm aiming for 100 miles and I believe @jonfirestar & @Jarric are doing the same

Now get out there and get those legs moving!

Good Luck!

I think for this one, I'm going to have to convert myself into using miles rather than kilometres!

I'm not quite a running newbie, but neither have I been consistent with it. So, I'm setting a much more modest goal of 25 miles. I know you guys will storm way ahead of me on the leaderboard, but that's okay. The competitive nature of the PvP itself will push me, and if nothing else, I can tell this is going to work great for accountability!

Wait, I thought Canada has to use kilometers because of England. Now you are telling me you get to use miles like the states? Disillusioned.  I guess I can manage the math.

My goal for this challenge is 65k (30 miles), including my 5k OCR on July 29th.  I'm definitely not a contender, but  I am an enthusiastic participant.

I'm in England and I tend to use kilometres as well lol. I think its more about personal preference here.

I didn't know Canada used kilometres as well. I measure my distances in kilometres too, but I figured most people here would use miles.

I've added some columns to the spreadsheet so you can put in kilometres and it will convert to miles for you. I did it on my phone so if it's wrong or doesn't work, let me know!

The whole Miles/KM thing in England is... complicated. We sort of use both. It's weird. I tend to use miles for distance, except when I don't.

Well up for this.

I may also have added a ranking column - not that I have any illusions of finishing above anyone (and especially not if @Xena is joining us!)

I like how races go 5K, 10K, 13.1 miles, 26.2 miles and then 50 or 100 in either measurement. We can't make our minds up! I once did a run that was classed as a 1/4 marathon, which was just over 10k. I don't know why they couldn't just do a 10km race.

Thanks for this. I was playing around earlier trying to find ways to highlight who was in the lead, but didn't think to put on a ranking. I've set it so it highlights the leader!

I really do wish that everyone could just agree to use one or the other and be done with it. It really doesn't matter which one. Although choices like these become religious to those who care :P

PvP = mini-war??

ok...I'm in cuz it will be fun to hang out with all my running friends! I'll have a taper coming up in a couple weeks (and a marathon at the end of July followed by some recovery), so I'm not sure what my exact goal is. You guys know I run a lot of distance. It's perfectly fine if you want to take me out of the rankings.

So the idea is to count all exercise miles, right? If it's meant to be miles more than you would normally plan to do, I guess I would be at zero or negative numbers. I'll run my plan or a little less, but rarely more.

I believe it's the miles you do that is regarded as a workout instead of miles you do that count as leisure sports(i.e. Walking to the store, warm-up jogs).

I'm def counting warm up jogs, because between those and sprints, that is pretty much all I will have this challenge...

Yes, exercise miles or leisure miles. So for example, my walk to the train station to get to work each day is 2 miles there and back, so I won't count this. But if i decided to go for a hike or hill walk on a weekend, then that would count.

Okay, soo how about this? I wasn't planning on counting this, and I'm still not planning on doing so, but I'm curious to what you think. Every day for my lunch break I take a 5k walk. The purpose of this walk is solely for exercise (and to get out of the office for an hour) but I do it every day and I've done it every day for years and years. Even before I decided to get fit but it does amount to 15 miles per week ;)

You walk 5k every lunch? Damn! I don't want to be draconian on the rules so if you want to count it in this challenge then you can. This is just  a bit of fun after all! Although, I was thinking that we could run a mini competition where whoever has fewer miles out of the 3 of us going to Barrel of Laps by Fri 28th July, has to get the first round in. :D

My 100 mile running goal is for running only, so even though I'll log any walks in the pvp, I'll log my 100 mile running goal separately on my challenge, if that makes sense?

Yep. TBH it's some where between 2.5 miles and 3.3 depending on how fast I'm walking that day. It is essentially a long lap around the park and lake. I like to walk and find it a good way to clear my head. I sort of credit it for why I was able to take to running so well. I'm used to putting in a lot of miles on my legs.

I'm still not  planning on counting it though because I do plan on getting in excess of 100 miles running alone and that should keep me in contention ;)

I was thinking that we could run a mini competition where whoever has fewer miles out of the 3 of us going to Barrel of Laps by Fri 28th July, has to get the first round in. :D

I'm certainly up for a bit of a wager! It'll give us all a little bit more motivation to get the miles in! I might need it in order to actually get out and running next weekend.
