JediNickD
Welcome back for another episode of The Exciting Adventures of JediNickD! It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away that I joined this site and started my first challenge.. World 1 was my first extended stay. I took a hiatus from NF and came back with a new direction for my goals where I warped to World 2, which I defeated in a Boss Fight slaying some mighty big goals. On to World 3 to continue to level up my life! Challenge Lesson: In Episode IV: A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi is training Luke Skywalker in the fundamentals of the Force and Jedi. Aboard the Millennium Falcon, during a lightsaber training exercise, Luke is able to use the Force to deflect laser bolts while blinded. Han Solo is unimpressed calling it luck. Kenobi responds, "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck." His experience is that of a Jedi Master, listening to the "Will of the Force" and being able to predict or anticipate future events. Using instinct, intuition, observation, and knowledge, one can predict and anticipate future events like a Jedi. Maybe not deflecting blaster bolts, but predicting the motives or actions of another person can be fairly helpful in many situations. I don't rely on luck unless I'm playing a friendly game. It is better to create your own luck by understanding the circumstances and generating favorable odds through use of instinct, intuition, observation, and knowledge. My Main Quest and Mission: My mission is to be the best Jedi I can be. My main quest is always to enhance my overall health, fitness, and knowledge to be prepared for whatever challenges life could throw at me. As a Jedi, I need to be able to help people, whether that is a life threatening situation or just a charitable one. There is no boss level in Jedi training, there is only tomorrow. Some workouts are longer than others ;-). I have found 120 min a week for each category keeps me in the physical shape I desire while challenging me to improve. Also, it works out to be 60 minutes for 6 days a week, giving me one rest day, which is the weekly average I want. Lastly, it doesn't give me a lot of room for error. If I miss a day or part of a workout, then I need to make it up or I will miss my goal. 1 Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. JediNickD
156.0 lbs. I'm starting in the same spot as last challenge >:-(, but that is my fault for not being consistent enough with my new habits. I did make small steps forward. I will be better this challenge. That's what the challenges are all about. Monday, I did 10 min of Stretching in the morning, then 10 more at lunch time before a 50 min Bodyweight and Physical Therapy workout. Karate class in the evening for 45 min. In-to-out, out-to-in, and turn-backs, which is what killed my hips last time. I was sore, but not injured. The muscles are getting stronger. More work to build the one foot balance to go along with the hip flexibility. Tuesday, after a morning stretch, I took the dog for a run for 45 min, where he took me for at least a 1-mile sprint to start. I wish I clocked it, but I know about how much distance we covered, before he had to take a pee break. We moved pretty fast through the whole run. It was his first time back at that park in a long time so I guess he was super excited. I planned to go for an hour, but we were done at 30 min, so we headed back to the car for water, then packed it in when the dog decided the parking lot was a good place to lay down. Wednesday, this morning, I did 10 min of Stretching before a 50 min Bodyweight and Physical Therapy workout. I hit the hips and one-foot balance exercises hard. Pistol and shrimp squat holds with moving my free foot to different positions to challenge my balance. I found out this morning that calf extensions is a weak spot, which I need to hit more often to help with my toe balance. I also thoroughly worked my arms with archer pull-ups, type-writer push-ups, jumping diamond push-ups, hand-stand push-ups and holds, and toes-to-bar. Plan for today: Toastmasters at lunch and evening. Usually, I would plan a speech to give at both meetings, but I slacked. I could always do the Distinguished club program. Yep... I'm doing that now. Looks like I'm starting my 8th Competent Communicator manual today! Got my speech title and message: "DCP to Be A DTM", the Distinguished Club Program is designed by Toastmasters International to track the progress and success of an individual club, while also orienting club members and leadership towards pursuing individual growth and success in communication and leadership through the Toastmasters Education Program and path to Distinguished Toastmaster. The message is long, but the title sums it up in a clever way. My personal experience achieving DTM and serving as a club leader will add to the speech, but I need to pull a Ralph Smedley quote to pull it all together. Also, this post took 90 minutes to type, because of my Ranger-brain. 2 Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. JediNickD
My speech went well both times, save for a couple moments where I needed to collect my thoughts (but that will happen with improvised speeches). I'm certainly improving the skill. After the evening meeting, I talked with the previous club president about the state of the club and what we can do about membership. After I got home, I walked the dogs to get in a little cardio and wear the dogs out since I was hardly home yesterday. This morning, I got to the gym late, because my wife is out of town, so I have to do all the morning routine stuff for the animals. I need to remember to feed the fish tonight. I always forget about the fish. My workout was 12 min on the recumbent bike and 20 min of stretching and one-legged balance exercises. I finished with hand-stand push-ups. Try not. JediNickD
155.6 lbs this morning. Not bad starting blocks. Stretching, physical therapy, and bodyweight exercises. I worked on my hip flexibility and one-leg balance. Yesterday, I changed the oil on the Prius. The van needs a change too before my wife leaves on vacation. I'll be doing the oil and spark plugs this weekend. I also helped a friend change out an alternator. Vacation Bible School is this week, starting tonight. My wife and I are running imagination station (because SCIENCE) and I will also be running sound for the opening and closing activities. We'll miss karate all week, but the kids will be at Karate camp so they won't. Instead, they will just be exhausted during VBS. I'll make up the karate time next week, but I'll also try to get some practice in a lunch time work out. Try not. JediNickD
I got to the gym at lunch time. I started with Toes-to-Bar as my warm-up exercise. Two 10 rep sets, then squeeze 7 more out in my last set. That got the blood flowing! Karate practice with push-ups to break up all the kicking. JediNickD
155.2 lbs Ran this morning. I went hard for my first mile, but I was not anywhere close to 7 min mile pace (7:45 min mile pace was my max speed). Maybe that Incentive is set too high. I thought I had been going faster on my miles on the treadmill than I remember, but it has been a while since I went hard. Toastmasters today. I'm giving a Demonstration speech for fitness called "Get Fit Anywhere". I'm going to talk about the benefits of squats and planks, after covering individual goals, walking and warm ups for your heart rate, and quality over quantity. I've got a bit to jam into 5-7 min. The demonstrations always take longer than I rehearse, so I just need to make sure I get to them before I hit green (5 min). Try not. JediNickD
156.4 lbs... I need veggies. I only have lettuce left. A run to the store won't happen until Saturday. Ugh. Just an overbooked week with no time to get to the store. I should have shopped at the end of last week. Maybe I can stop on my way to the gym tomorrow morning. In the morning, I will just need to pack a cooler with ice packs for the produce. Stretch, physical therapy, and bodyweight exercises. I focused on core, triceps, and one-legged balance exercises. Speech went well yesterday. I forgot my notes, so I only hit one of my references, Shin Ohtake's MAX Workouts, which stresses quality and intensity. I hit all my points and exercises, but I did go over 30 seconds in time. It is hard to see the Red Card go up when I am down on the floor in a plank position. JediNickD
It's been a couple weeks since my last update. I can assure you, I am on track for most my goals. Fitness and Life goals are being met. The Diet goal had been going well, but as usual, I go on vacation and my calorie intake increases. I'm usually hungrier at meal times due to excess activity (sports, pool, beach, hiking, etc), but I always over eat or eat the wrong things. I thought I did ok this time since I was walking 17000 steps a day. I made the healthiest choice of the selections I'd enjoy. I didn't snack on popcorn or ice cream even though I had ample opportunity. Alas, my weight ballooned to 159.8 lbs. My waistline is still a trim 32" with my pants fitting loose, but I can feel it in my gut that I am heavy. I've got some recovery to do, which might carry over to next challenge considering I was aiming at 154.6 lbs this challenge. I regret nothing. I'm just disappointed with the results and plan to improve next time. I'm hoping to get some long runs in next week, but my back, hip, and leg soreness might stifle my efforts. Physical therapy, muscle relaxers, ice, and hot tub this week to recover. It is a circular process. It is one I'll be doing the rest of my life most likely (not like my spinal cord discs will magically become younger). I tend to procrastinate or ignore the recover parts when the pain is minor which just spirals into major or crippling pain. JediNickD
Ate like a rabbit yesterday. Had to take one of the cats to the vet last night and drop off this morning for follow up treatment. Dumb cat gets in fights with the feral cats when he gets out, because Snarf is a trouble maker. He came home with his ears cut up Tuesday and one wound swelled up. So, I missed my morning workout. I am planning to get karate practice at lunch time to work on my Green belt combos and form. My test is Sunday! I did make it to karate, last night, and got a great workout in practicing body twists to add mass and momentum to my strikes. After Karate, I went out to Karaoke night at the local dive. I'm not a singer, but I enjoy singing. Karaoke is something which usually involves a lot of liquid courage and slurred lyrics for me. To help build confidence, I have pushed myself to do it whenever I am on my own. I went twice last week and last night to give it one last spin before the family comes home. Over the past two weeks, I've developed a repertoire of go-to songs (Buckcherry's "All Night Long" is a personal favorite to get up there and belt, but it isn't really singing) and found some that just don't fit me (like Eve 6's "Here's to the Night", fun to sing, horrible to listen to, because I can't sing). I put the songs in a memo on my phone, so I won't forget. I'll try my hand again on August 18th and 31st when the family is out of town. Even better, I've made some friends at the bar (regulars, bartenders, and the owners) with similar tastes in music, who I am looking forward to seeing again. Unfortunately, I am getting comfortable with the crowd there, so I might have to find another bar to go to for experimenting in front of strangers. Either way, I have a few weeks to go through my music collection to find a few new songs to try out. Try not. JediNickD
The weekend was full of activity: After work on Friday, I cleaned the house before my wife and kids returned. They gave me plenty of time getting home at 9pm. Then I had to unpack the van... yay. Saturday from 9:30am to 3:30pm, I was representing Toastmasters and my local club at an Arts and Crafts Fair at my family's church. It was a successful venture making a bunch of contacts and convincing several that Toastmasters is right for them. Hopefully, I'll see them Tuesday. I had a couple club members come out to support, too. Saturday night, we had friends over for RPG night, which means more cleaning for me (mostly, just vacuuming was left). We started a new D&D adventure last weekend with half the regulars and added most everyone else Saturday. The party is almost complete and the adventure has been fun with mystery, carnage, and tomfoolery, but I'm not sure it will last as the GM is a stickler for rules and that is the last thing everyone in the group wants. Previous GM was much looser, especially, with the Dungeon Crawl games. I'll probably GM our games next. Since I have mostly been GMing for my kids, I have an even looser approach, using Basic Fantasy and DCC as guidelines for building an adventure, but I don't stick to any particular rules. I prefer to focus on the storytelling and creativity aspects of role-playing games. Sunday morning, I had my green belt test for Karate. It was awesome to get out there and spotlight skills, but we also learned a new skill for stick defense. Penetrate and dominate, which starts with reacting. When we are doing application, reacting is one thing I need to improve. The second piece is flowing from one move into the next. I'm too focused on doing part A correct first that I practically stop halfway through to check my technique before moving into part B. It makes my technique very awkward, but I am improving on it. I did well on Sunday. I think spar class has helped me speed everything up. After the Karate test, we went out to lunch. My wife told me some big news. We have been renting our old house for 7 years and we decided in June to sell it. It has been a process, but we received our first offer Friday night. It was a good offer from good buyers and thought they'd be able to meet us at our price, so we decided to negotiate with a counter off. My wife got a call Sunday morning from our realtor that our counter offer was countered right where we wanted and she accepted. Our old house is finally SOLD! We just need to get the inspections and paperwork out of the way. After lunch, it was yard work time. Weed whacking, cleaning animals, fixed the driveway lamp. I was going to haul away branch trimmings but the ride-on mower tire was flat and came off the rim. Gotta get that fixed. Dishes and laundry after dinner. I also started getting my wiring stuff together to wire the electrical and lighting for the deck. My basement work space is still a mess, but next weekend I'll make some progress on it. Try not. At the end of the test, we receive our new belts. They say they are "grading", but we've already earned the belt by test day. I'm pretty sure the instructors are just noting progress and pointers for individuals and large pointers to bring up in class. The real test is earning the 7 belt stripes during classes over the 2-4 months between your test days, especially, the purple stripe which is for "knowing everything you are suppose to know". Try not. JediNickD
155.0 lbs this morning. phew. I've recovered from Disney World gluttony. 4 pounds lost in a week. Now, to keep driving to the finish line. Yesterday, I ran and walked 3.8 km in 60 minutes. Today, I sprinted 3 400m, 2 200m, 2 100m and 3 50m, for 10 total. That's two of my running Bonus Incentives. Can I get the other two before the end of this challenge? My legs and lungs will have something to say about that. We'll see what it is tomorrow morning. Either way, I'm running and I'm going hard, so they might as well get on board. I gave a speech yesterday on who the Last Jedi may be in Episode VIII by doing some Interpretive Reading of The Force Awakens novelization. Unfortunately, there is no mystery there. Snoke comes right out and says that Luke Skywalker is the last Jedi. The main plot of the movie revolves around a map to find him, because he is the last Jedi. On YouTube, there is so much speculation on The Last Jedi, who is Snoke, who is Rey, why did Luke leave, and so on, but the conversations between Snoke and Kylo Ren in Episode VII reveal a lot more than you may have noticed in your viewing of the movie. But then again, you also have to get the background from the other novels to compile all the information to understand what The Force Awakens is telling us. It's a fun speech, so I'm giving it again today, and I'll do better with meeting my time allotment. JediNickD
154.4 lbs this morning! Met my challenge goal, but breaking my maximum weight goal certainly made it more difficult. This morning, I ran 1 mile in 6:42. Phew! I ran hard at 6:30 pace until 0.70 mile mark, then slowed down to catch my breath, then finished with two 0.15 mile sprints slowing down between to catch my breath. It was a tough run. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the treadmill's assistance. Looks like I'll keep this incentive for next round so I can improve on it. But it needs to be worth more than $5, as it is a pounding on the body and lungs which I will not be easily convinced to go after again. I'm going to raise it up to $20 next challenge, but without slowing down or grabbing the hand holds. Falling short in any capacity still nets me $5. I believe I can do it building off what I did today, but I don't want to burn myself out for nothing. Toastmasters at lunch time was a lot of fun. I changed my angle a bit for the my Star Wars speculation pitch, but I still ran over in time. At least, this time I got to the second excerpt from The Force Awakens to interpret it. It'll be something to work on as I have one more time to give it. Karate last night was good. I got to begin learning my kata for Blue belt. We also worked on breaking out of hand holds by penetrating attacking elbow to elbow and dominating with application of combinations and katas. Try not. JediNickD
With house sale, the Septic passed inspection. Only have the home inspection left, then it is all paperwork! Hooray! At home, after my Triple Play discount on DirecTV and Verizon was negated by the AT&T acquisition of DirecTV, we are becoming cord-cutters opting for SlingTV. First step is faster internet to support live streaming which is getting installed Saturday. Upgrading the internet was something that we needed to do anyway with the kids using it now for their kindles and my Extra-Life streaming (and my desire to not be pwned every time I play online shooters). It is a good time to ditch DirecTV and Sunday Ticket as the New York Jets are going to be really bad this year. SlingTV has the NFL Redzone, which will suffice, but I'll miss watching every down of the Jets. I'll just have to use the saved cash for tickets to a game every once in a while ;-). JediNickD
155.4 lbs closing weight for the challenge. My starting weight was 155.6. My minimum for the challenge was 154.4 (yesterday). I made my goal, but I didn't make any weight loss progress from last challenge where I started at 156.0 and my minimum was 153.8. My 30 entry average is the best indicator for weight loss progress. May 30th was the start of last challenge. On that day, my average was 155.9. Through June, it dropped to 155.6. Today, it is 155.8. I've treaded backwards this challenge. I will tighten the nuts for Level 5. Karate last night. Worked on elbows and a little cat stance. My right side is in sync, but my left is awkward lacking power. The cat stance is weird, but once I got my balance on the back foot right, it is a cat walk. While working towards green belt, it finally felt like I knew what I was doing with my balance, quickness, and power coming together. I actually feel comfortable saying, "I know Karate," instead of, "I'm taking Karate." Of course, I really know nothing relative to what is left to learn, but I am confident I can instinctively apply what I have learned, which comes out in spar class. With more practice, I can make that "intuitively apply". Quads and hamstrings were sore this morning so no 3 mile run. I need to push the run to get my lungs in better shape, but I have spar class Saturday; therefore, I'll save the run for Monday or Tuesday and do some light running over my 5 day vacation. Instead of running, I hit the foam roller and physical therapy. I'll probably do some Karate practice with my wife tonight as she hasn't been in quite a while. Maybe the kids too, but they will get to class on Saturday. It would be good to brush them up before class. I've got 10 minutes of Cardio left to make my weekly goal. I'll need to get a walk in or something. Maybe I can walk the dogs tonight or early Saturday morning. It is First Friday, so maybe take the kids to town. I'll get it done. I got a Toastmasters mentoring session at lunch time. Also, I need to get my Jedi training in for this week still. I don't think I am missing any other check marks for this challenge. I need to get my "How to Conduct Productive Meetings" seminar prepared for August 19th. I have vacation next week so my time is shorter than it looks. This evening I've got cleaning to do to get the house ready for the cable internet installation, which means cleaning the basement so he can maneuver to run cable. I ordered an ASUS WiFi router to setup as well. I'll probably install both in the TV cabinet, because that is where all the wire devices sit, but I am contemplating other ideas. The WiFi router has a USB ports for a file share drive and a share printer. Location of the router will determine if I can take advantage of these. Or I could run an extension USB cable... so many options. This weekend is more cleaning, maybe some yard work, cutting up an old rug for garbage collection, changing oil and spark plugs for the van, and figuring out why my check engine light came on the Prius. Try not.
