Diadhuit doubles and halves

Hi,

after a half successful challenge, I want to double up!

But... life is strange and I happen to both be on holidays and start a new job these four weeks. This would make it very difficult for me to even setting up a challenge, but I decided to change the rules and make it two two weeks challenges.

The difficulty in tracking for last challenge will be replaced with Loop habit tracker, and that's what I mean with ticks below.

Changing the ratings to percentages will work better, with passing grade at 60%

First part: 1st July to 14th July

Main quests:

I have 15kg to lose and I want to be happier than I already am.

My quests:

1)   Walk "The Walk" app, this worked last challenge as motivation, but tracking should be 10k steps per day

100% = Reach a total of 14 days of mininum 10k

90% = Reach a total of 13 days of mininum 10k

80% = Reach a total of 12 days of mininum 10k

70% = Reach a total of 11 days of mininum 10k

60% = Reach a total of 10 days of mininum 10k

Note: keeping the bar high because I am on holidays so no excuse and I already do that most of the days when I work, so again, no excuse

2) Eat vegetables twice a day

100% = Reach a total of 28 ticks

90% = Reach a total of 26 ticks

80% = Reach a total of 24 ticks

70% = Reach a total of 22 ticks

60% = Reach a total of 20 ticks

Note: This should be easy here at Mom's :D

3) When I am out of bed I do phisio and abs excercises

100% = Reach a total of 10 ticks

90% = Reach a total of 9 ticks

80% = Reach a total of 8 ticks

70% = Reach a total of 7 ticks

60% = Reach a total of 6 ticks

Note: phisio plank as long as the abs app plank, the bar is quite high, but I am giving me some margin and I have time

Level up my life:

If I put my night gown on I pray the examen (around 15min/day)

100% = Reach a total of 11 ticks

90% = Reach a total of 9 ticks

80% = Reach a total of 5 ticks

70% = Reach a total of 4 ticks

60% = Reach a total of 3 ticks

Note: keeping this simple to not overstress it as it would get the opposite results... it it works I'll add a higher bar next challenge

Review of the first week (1 to 8 july included):

Due to the Italian heat, I needed to reassess the first quest to 8k steps. I hate changing the goals because knowing myself I will make up excuses and lower the bar just because. But this needed to be done.

I need to semember when I set up my goals about 'cheat days' such as travelling days and my birthday doh!

My quests:

1)   Walk "The Walk" app, this worked last challenge as motivation, but tracking should be 8k steps per day

5/8 - 62%

I could have done better here, it is interesting that I had no motivation at all, but also that I was in an awful mood and reverted back to teenage behaviour even if my family needed me. Surely this haven't been an emotionally and mentally recharging holiday, and I can't blame anyone but myself :(

2) Eat vegetables twice a day

13/16 - 81%

This is easy when I eat at Mom's, but I went out for pizza once, for 'liquid dinner' (even if I don't drink alcohol) another and to a barbeque festival just to meet friends. Probably I did set the bar too high considering that travelling will add another two missed opportunities (a slice of tomatoes in a sandwich doesn't count). I'll have a think on readjusting

3) When I am out of bed I do phisio and abs excercises

5/8 - 62%

I went to the phisiotherapist that said I was doing the exercise slightly wrong and my neck was not healing. And then she added another bit to the plank and a full other exercise. I won't modify the goal for now, but I will try to add the modified plank.

She also reccommended me to have my thyroid tested (she felt my neck big) and to check my sugar intake as all my fat is in my belly. Keeping this in mind for next challenge.

Level up my life:

If I put my night gown on I pray the examen (around 15min/day)

4/8 - 50% (but 70% against my grade)

This is kind of working because I am on hols, but not always as a night gown on. Still, not sure I am doing it right, I kind of feel empty and sad, way away. But sometimes it happens.

The double percentage makes me feel that next challenge I should use a multiplier instead of bands. E.g. Low bar is percentage * 2 (to give a every other day is success)

Review of the first part of the challenge (1 to 14 july included):

This second week I travelled back home and while from Wednesday the heat has been less of an issue, the consequences of a 16 hours journey (it started with a flat tire on my way to the train station, a train, a bus, a flight that was half an hour late, an expected wait of 3 hours at the airport, a flight that went to the runaway and then went back to check the PA and had one hour delay, a bus that because it was the last stopped 3 stops before mine, a 1.5k walk after midnight with all my luggage) made me lazy.

My quests:

1)   Walk "The Walk" app, this worked last challenge as motivation, but tracking should be 8k steps per day

8/14 - 40%

On Wednesday (the travel day) I got some issues with the tracker I used, and when I rebooted my phone it lost all the steps. I call it a successful day because I did walk enough considering I was walking with weights

2) Eat vegetables twice a day

13.5/28 - 72.5%

Well, travelling hasn't affected it as much as I expected as I had a salad side in my dinner. I counted the carrot and three radicchio leaves I had for lunch as half a tick because it is not a full portion, but the best I could do with the situation

3) When I am out of bed I do phisio and abs excercises

5.5/14 - 55%

Thyroid and sugars seems ok from my blood tests. The follow up decided that I have to reduce my blood pressure pills. Not that any of these affects the grade here, I just mentally gave up after seeing the PT (maybe because I have seen the PT?)

Level up my life:

If I put my night gown on I pray the examen (around 15min/day)

7/14 - 82.5%

I didn't count the times I did pray with the "Pray as you go" app as the challenge was meant for the examen, but that has increased and I like the app a lot. I am using the examen in that app too now, and I can't tell if it is an improvement in my prayer compared to the following a schema. Yet, last challenge I fared 10% on this compared to a 50% (but I was not on holidays) so I'll keep up.

Total challenge rate: 62.5%

Who-hoo! I (barely) passed the challenge! I know it is because the two successful parts of the challenge were too easy :D and that I failed one that I really didn't expect to. I really love the habits app for android to keep me accountable!!

Secret quests:

These were quests that were not in my challenge, but tried to keep up with:

Dance a song every day: 8/14 - 57% - Hahaha, I fared better this time that it was not in my challenges (that was 32%)

Meditate every day: 5/14 - 36% - Ok, sometimes this is part of the preparation for the examen prayer, so maybe I forgot to include it sometimes? Yet there is a lot of margin for improvement!

Drink 1.5l water 8/11 - 72% - I am using plant nanny, I thought I was drinking way more than I am... The app says I should drink 3l and I fail to drink half of it sometimes... ugh! But often I forget to tap the app, so maybe it's not as bad?

As I said last week I'll come up with a multiplier, and the formula to calculate it should be

multiplier = total_value * 0.6 / passing_value

e.g. every other day tick is the passing value (7 on a 14 days challenge): 14*0.6/7 = 1.2

if I do 7/14 = 50% * 1.2 --> final grade 60%

If the percentage exceeds 100% it will be capped: e.g. 13/14 = 111% --> final grade 100%

This will allow me to understand how I am faring more easily during the challenge, e.g. I have done 5/9 = 55% (that seems not be passing) * 1.2 --> partial grade 66% so I understand that it is a partial passing grade

Ok, I think it looks more complicated that it will be when I use it!

Second part: 23rd July to 5th August

Diadhuit faces the Unknown

So... on Monday I am going to face a new job after having left a job and a company I loved in the hope that I will like this one better (on paper it can be my dream job, I know it is the right decision, still I feel more for the place I left than the one I got)

There are so many unknown in this job and it is difficult if not impossible to put objectives for now. There is a canteen, but will I be able to bring my own food? Will the food be healthy? They said free fruit, gym classes and other stuff... so what will be the temptations and what the healthy habits I will start? I don't know yet. So this is a draft to be tested the first week and adjusted or completely discarded.

Main quests:

I have 15kg to lose and I want to be happier than I already am.

My quests:

1) Walk to or from work (it should mean 5k steps but usually I add other walks so I would expect to fare around 8k), walk 10k steps on weekends

Using habits for the weeks, step tracker for the weekends

Multiplier: 1.2 (every other day)

edit: no edits as after test in week 0 this seems doable (I did walk both from and to work nearly each day! 6/7 -->100%)

2) Eat vegetables twice a day

Using habits, putting a reminder at 7 for dinner.

Multiplier: 1.2 (at least once per day)

This is going to be difficult at home as I have the bad habit to skip dinner. And to go rarely for groceries

edit: no edits as after test in week 0 this seems doable even if tough (9/14 --> 77%)

3) Start tracking my food intake with the hand method (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/calorie-control-guide ) with few modifications

Any suggestion on apps that would use this method or should I write by hand? For now I'll use the counter app

Multiplier: 1 (every day)

edit: added a multiplier, using the modified method and an app instead of paper. After test in week 0 this seems doable (7/7 --> 100%)

If these are not working out, potential quests:

- eat fish 3 days per week

- turn off the lights before 11

- do phisiotherapy

- do abs workout

- do anywhere abs (https://darebee.com/workouts/anywhere-abs-workout.html)

- meditate

- try a new (healthy) recipe per week

edit: yes, they seem doable

Level up my life:

If I am walking home from work I pray the examen from the app

else if I put my night gown on I pray the examen

Multiplier: 1.4 (at least three days per week)

Note: this would make it easier than what I achieved the past two weeks, but I'm keeping it simple

edit: no edits as after test in week 0 this seems doable even if tough (4/7 --> 80%)

Review: 23rd July to 28th July included

Diadhuit starts to know the Unknown and likes it.

6/6 --> 100%

Most of the week I have walked both to and from work, but not always. On Thursday I did walk quite a lot (step tracker says 16k steps, but I know it is not accurate after 10k and tends to track less)

2) Eat vegetables twice a day

Using habits, putting a reminder at 7 for dinner.

Multiplier: 1.2 (at least once per day)

7/12 --> 70%

3) Start tracking my food intake with the hand method (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/calorie-control-guide ) with few modifications

Any suggestion on apps that would use this method or should I write by hand? For now I'll use the counter app

Multiplier: 1 (every day)

5/6 --> 83%

It looks like I can't track very well when I am out for lunch or dinner and have mixed food: how can I track a pizza? how much fat would there be in a plate of pasta with a lot of sauce?

I think my aim (for the future) is to eat the following portions:

Veggie: 6

Proteins and fats: 8

Carbs: 4 (aiming for max 1 white)

But looking at the last two weeks my results are:

Veggie 2.6 (yep, not at home with Mom anymore)

Proteins and fats: 7.7

Carbs: 6.5 (with 4 white)

Level up my life:

If I am walking home from work I pray the examen from the app

else if I put my night gown on I pray the examen

Multiplier: 1.4 (at least three days per week)

3/6 --> 70%

Review:  23th July 5 August (escluted as it is a cheat day - I was at a wedding)

Diadhuit embraces the Unknown fully

Three weeks into the new job, and yes it is the right decision for me right now. Is it challenging? Yes! Will I pass the probation period? I hope so, but it is challenging... Still have feelings for my old job? Yes, definitely.

The discoveries are that there is a canteen and 3 microwaves, so that's a good thing. They have pizza sometimes but usually even salads and sandwiches. They have tons of free fruit and Pilates classes. But they also have biscuits on a Friday... Oh, well!

Many other changes in my life are happening and at this moment I am happy!! You can see my main quest had a "be happier" but I think that a vague this can be, it is very difficult to be happier than I am now. Do I have doubts on what I am doing? on the future? on the decisions I am taking in this moment? YES! But it does not affect my happiness! I sometimes don't recognise myself here, it is quite out of character, yet I don't care. If being happy is out of character then let be it. Maybe I am just becoming the protagonist of my own life and my character is becoming more nuanced... Who knows? I don't care, I like it!

Main quests:

I have 15kg to lose and I want to be happier than I already am.

My quests:

1) Walk to or from work (it should mean 5k steps but usually I add other walks so I would expect to fare around 8k), walk 10k steps on weekends

This is going to be difficult at home as I have the bad habit to skip dinner. And to go rarely for groceries

17/26 --> 78%

3) Start tracking my food intake with the hand method (http://www.precisionnutrition.com/calorie-control-guide ) with few modifications

Any suggestion on apps that would use this method or should I write by hand? For now I'll use the counter app

Multiplier: 1 (every day)

25/26 --> 96%

Level up my life:

If I am walking home from work I pray the examen from the app

else if I put my night gown on I pray the examen

Multiplier: 1.4 (at least three days per week)

8/13 --> 86%

Dance a song every day: 7/14 - 50%

Meditate every day: 1/14 - 7% :(

Drink 1.5l water - I gave up on Plant nanny as it was not for me. I should keep more attention to my water intake but whatever for now

Challenge score: 90%

4WC score: 76%

Nice challenge!

I also have had success with shorter, bite-sized two-week challenges, so I think that's a great idea especially if you're already anticipating a busy four weeks to come. Do you have any questions or want any encouragement? How often are you planning to check in?

Let us know! I'll be cheering for you!

@Wobbegong sorry forgot to activate notifications... doh!

Thank you so much!!

I won't write much, but always grateful for cheers :)

Today especially, I barely moved (3k steps), my arse was too heavy :D (isn't it a lame excuse?!?)

No trouble! I struggle with notifications too lol.

It's fine if you don't write much, but I'll expect a progress report every week, since you bothered to set the post space aside for it. If I don't hear from you I'll ping!

I... also have a very heavy derriere. >_> But I went to a cafe for the morning instead of just sitting around in this dumb house all day! Even though it's only four blocks away, that's gotta count for something, right? Excuses are all well and good if they help you (and laughing at how ridiculous your low step count was might be helpful!) but as soon as they get in the way of meeting your goals, they become a problem. So you think you've got a heavy butt? Ever met a kangaroo? ;) Get moving!

I forgot to ask before, but how much do you usually walk? Is 10k a personal baseline, or just a number? (Just thinking, for some people 3k is a lot of steps... for them I would say "try a reach goal of 4-5k to get started.") It sounds like for you 3k is cringe-worthy for you, but according to the internet it's at the high end of average for most "sedentary" people. For me, I used to average about 12-14k when I was commuting, but now that I'm full-time remote my daily steps have plummeted. (They're so bad I don't even track them anymore. T_T)

Ah, and don't forget to drink some water!

Hahaha, you made me LOL so hard (that should consume calories too, right? right??) I like your spirit! and today I am not repeating yesterday's errors!

I manage easily 10k when I am in Ireland and working, so 3k is very low being on holidays and doing nothing. But I can't stand the Italian heat and with my family I revert to my teenager raging, eating and sedentary person. I should know better :)

Yep, that's the other thing... With this heat I feel run down because I drink as if I were in my beloved wettish island. I just installed Plant Nanny, let's see if I keep that one healthy, as I managed to nearly kill a catcus once! My fingers are not exactly green, I'm not that type of alien :D

I'm happy my spirit can be of service lol. Surely laughing consumes some calories... let's see... the Internet says yes! Apparently it's a mini-aerobic exercise. But who laughs solidly for an hour? (Also I have no idea how reputable the Telegraph is.)

Gotcha. Yeah, I also tend to revert to bad habits when I'm at home with the family, and then even worse habits when I'm out with friends. Basically the only thing I can do is sequester myself somewhere where I can cook all my own meals and not buy crap, but that gets boring. I too should know better, but situational habits are a thing! They're tough to overcome!

A Plant Nanny cactus or a real cactus? Plant Nanny cactuses need a lot more water than real ones. (I've killed them by over-watering before. The Plant Nanny ones need as much as a cabbage or any other plant, which is a little ridiculous.) Best of luck with the app and hydration in general! I find having a glass of water handy is very helpful.

It might please you@Wobbegong that yesterday I completed my steps because I knew you would have been checking!

I get headaches after laughing for 15min because I forget to breathe (as I do when exercising)

Killed a real cactus by forgetting to water it (to my defence I went on hols, but I forgot to ask Mum to care)

Do you find Plant Nannya bit toward overdrinking? 3liters are ok here in the warm, but a bit too much for Ireland where the weather already 'hydrates' me :D

It does please me! And also congratulations on meeting your goal!! *high five*

O...k, I'll set the laughing aside for a second and just say "please breathe while exercising." Just like... please breathe in general. And if you ever go SCUBA diving, especially please breathe through your descent. (Cardinal rule of diving: never ever stop breathing. Because your equipment will kill you.)

Sorry to hear about your cactus. I too have a black thumb. I managed to kill a pot of dwarf roses, from shop-fresh and growing to black through, in less than a week once. I watered them. I just didn't give them any sunlight. Whoops.

I do not but I find nearly all water recommendations to be a bit towards under drinking. I easily go through 4-5L of water a day (note, I don't drink anything else -- no alcohol, soda, milk unless in cooking, juice, coffee, etc), which is significantly in excess of most recommendations but is the amount I find works best for me. So I can't really help with that, I honestly have no idea what's "right." I do think in general most people could stand to drink more water.

Things are going well, I am walking because I know you will keep me in check :D

I will have to replan the 10k steps to 8k steps, as I noticed the heat is killing me. I am not used to 35 Celsius with 55% humidity...

Today I have eaten out all meals, so no good on that side, but yeah, long time no see friends deserve eating out (lame excuse), on the plus side I haven't raided Mum's fridge...

Watch this space on Sat or Sun for more details!

Yeah, sometimes circumstances change and we need to adjust goals to match. I'm always really happy when I see people doing this instead of running themselves ragged. Don't get heat stroke! Just take a chill pill and enjoy your vacation. :) 35C does not sound like much fun, especially with so much humidity. It must make it feel way hotter.

It can be tough to eat well when you're out and about, but surely in Italy there are healthy options at restaurants? Idk I've never been to Italy. But when I see it on the travel channel it looks like a bunch of people who know how to eat great food. ;) Good job with not snacking (if that's what the fridge raiding comment means) and good luck with future meals!

Thanks for the update and I will look for you this weekend.

I cringe in changing goals because I am afraid of the slippery slope... but this time is needed, so I did.

You know, I always feel that way too, but on reflection it's a little ridiculous. That "slippery slope" of "oh, well I can't make this challenge, better make it easier, well I still can't do it, I'll make it even easier," etc., etc. ... is it really such a bad thing?

Of course it's ideal to challenge ourselves to do our very best, but it's not like the slippery slope bottoms out with us doing nothing at all. Not at all! We're Rebels, here to put in the work and improve our lives. When we edit our goals, we shouldn't look at it as a sign of failure, but as a sign that we know ourselves and are taking care to keep in touch with our abilities and limitations, and keep our expectations reasonable. It's not "giving ourselves a shortcut" or "making allowances," it's "staying on track"!

After all, even if you roll back a goal slightly, you're still doing something to change and improve. Maybe not as much as you once thought you could, in this particular timeframe, but you're saying, "Yeah, you know, this time it's not going to happen, but I'm going to stick with it and do the best I can and be proud of myself for whatever that 'best' turns out to be."

And I don't think there's anything wrong with that at all (or with dreaming big at the beginning and ending up having to roll some goals back!).

AAAAHHH I got busy with random other things and didn't check up on you! I've been seeing you around elsewhere on the threads though, so hopefully you're still keeping up with your challenge goals without me bugging you. How's walking vs the weather going? Heat still overwhelming?

I keep forgetting to ask what part of Italy you're in. I hope not too close to any of the wildfires! Stay safe!

Hi @Wobbegong, thanks for checking on me :) you are nearly a guild leader for us newbies, together with Flea and I am sure I am forgetting someone...

I needed a laptop for the review, so I was postponing... but I am trying to check in into the forum, so I keep motivated (hopefully).

The weather got the best of me, but now I am back home to a beautiful 22 degrees and 75% humidity (yep, humidity is always with me). I am from the north, near Venice, so humidity is high and fires are low (luckily) but I live in Ireland to confuse things...

I finished my first plant in plant nanny!!! But I discovered I am not drinking as much as I thought (maybe because on holidays? Usually at work I used to drink 3 to 5 half a litre glasses, plus the out of work water...)
