Mad Hatter does... something?

Recommended Posts

Pole session fuelled by 70's hard rock today. It was just me and one other girl at the studio so it was a mutual decision. ;) (Speaking of, on my way there I saw a really cool string trio playing Led Zeppelin, and it was brilliant!)

Of course I forgot to write a list of stuff I wanted to work on in advance, but I ended up with a productive session anyway. Except that I tried to practice handstands but my traps were killing me so I stopped... I mostly experimented with basic spins in cup grip and reverse grabs. And then butterflies on my wrong side, which continue to confuse me like crazy. I am getting somewhat closer to understanding what I need to do, but it's still a big mess. I also helped decipher a trick the other girl had found on IG, super fun. I got the mechanics of it, now I just need to find the balance. If all works out we're going to work on it again tomorrow. :) And of course I finished off with abs and a stretch.

After training I found a nice patch of grass and chilled in the sun while waiting for my grandma and mum to get into town. I finished season 2 of My dad wrote a porno, and I just want to say THANK YOU @raptron for suggesting it! :D Pure genius.

Then we took the ferry to a Suomenlinna, which is a UNESCO heritage site and really rather quite lovely! It's an island with a fortress on it, but people also go there just to chill and picnic and stroll around. It's very green and has tons of wildflowers, and we found a huuuuge patch of wild strawberries! But they still need a few more days of sun so I might have to go back soon. ;) After a nice long stroll we headed back to town for beer and burgers and now we're all in a food coma.

Good day.

WEEK 1 WRAP UP (feels weird to do this on a Saturday...)

Except for random niggles and confidence issues, this week has been a great training week! A lot of volume and a lot of fun. :) I feel on track, let's just see if it will stick when I start work again next week (whaaaah)

  • Structured Circus – 2 pole sessions! = 10 points
  • Stretchiness – 4 stretchy sessions! :o = 20 points
  • Abs – 3 core sessions! = 15 points
  • Life goal (Finnish) – Umm, I'll start next week when my family's not here
  • Bonus Photo or video progress on butterfly (pole), forearm stand or flying pigeon. - No photo or video yet, but I've been working on butterfly and flying pigeon
  • Extra Double Bonus – 1/5 freezer meals. Admittedly I didn't cook it, but that wasn't specified in the rules. :P

Total points = 45 points

And here's next week's abs video. I haven't tried it, but it looks like some kind of fun. Definitely not type 1 fun.

Have you ever heard of a group called Apocolyptica?  They are a cello quartet who play Metallica and are quite impressive :)

  • Marilyn spin on one side => reverse grab => Marilyn spin on the other side (Need more momentum and core to do well! I got some great piece of advice at the end of class about overgripping the pole in spins that I'm excited to try out)
  • Cradle spin => spinning Jamila => thread through into a lunge (can't do the last part, it's super awkward and can't get my foot in)
  • Tumble: Swing to hero => Aquarius => Gemini (scary yo! could only do it with a spot)
  • Gemini => butterfly => flatline scorpio => handstand (wrong side butterfly is sooo confusing!)
  • Fan kick => pole sit => cross ankle release => brass monkey (way to sweaty to attempt brass monkey at this point)

I'm soooooo in awe of what you can do!

Something to look forward to in other words. ;)

So you know the thing that one does when you pretend you're going to be responsible and go to bed early before your first day back at work but instead you play computer games until 2 am?

Yeah.

I was just about to write that yesterday was a rest day, but then I remembered that actually I went to open training! I was too tired for it to be productive though, my mum woke me up at 4.30 to leave for the airport and sleep wasn't great after that. I felt like an injury waiting to happen so I took it pretty easy, but it was nice to hang out in the studio! There was a super bendy girl there and I have to admit I got a bit jealous. Right now I can barely bend at all because of my pelvis thing and I miss it...

After class I dropped off my grandma at the airport and headed back home, fully intending to be a good adult but failing miserably. Oh well. :)

I meannn, you did go to a workout and dropped your family off at the airport. Plus, you were totally due for some personal time after entertaining all week! Sounds pretty adult-like to me. ;)

Haha I like the way you think. Except that I'm knackered today. And my flat is a mess. But today the only thing scheduled is hangout with friends so that's ok. :) (though I won't lie, part of me really wants to go home and keep playing. :P)

Yeah I squat with men and I'm like, hey I'm so flexible, look at me get right to the floor, then I go to pole and hoop and I'm like, ah yeah, my hamstrings are tight, my calves are tight, my thoracic spine is welded together...

And coffee...

Yup, hanging out with circus people completely destroys your frame of reference of what flexible means.

I think this is actually a manifestation of the "Friendship Paradox" - that on average your FB friends probably have more FB friends than you. Why is the Friendship Paradox true? Because people with lots of FB friends are more likely to be FB friends with you.

Here, the average person at gymnastics probably does more gymnastics than you, otherwise you wouldn't see them so much... and that means they're probably more of a natural and have spent more time practising so they'll be more flexy.

Or if you go to a weights gym, the average person there will be stronger than you.

Or if you go climbing, you'll usually be below average ability, just because the few extra-serious climbers who go 4x per week and you see all the time are probably better than the very casual climbers who go once a month.

So I guess it's good for our confidence and perspective to remember that whatever you're doing, the "average ability" isn't so high as the average you actually see.

Nope not a paradox. In the muggle world you're considered flexible if you can do a proper squat or touch your toes. In the circus world nobody will even bat an eyelid if you can do the splits or a bridge, that's just basic flexibility. Regardless of the level of the people around me, I find that now when I can't do the splits I have a deficit ROM rather than me being flexible when I can do them, if that makes sense. I don't mean it a negative way, it's just what I think my body and even most semi athletic bodies are reasonably capable of.

I'm currently on a point and click adventure binge. :D I played Kelvin and the infamous machine (super fun!) and then I played the first chapter of the King's quest remake, which is rather lovely!
