undermining the conspiracy / theanne faces self in battle

Long time no see, nerds! In fact, I'm not sure whether I've seen anyone I know in here still...

Short updates and life overview since I've not posted much in, oh, years: 48 state road trip in 2012 completed. Moved to Austin in 2013. Traveled globally through 2014. Solo month bicycle tour + summer job in the Grand Tetons in 2015. Have been living in Germany since 2016.

While European eating is way healthier for me in general, I've seriously fallen off the fitness bandwagon. I've been so low energy for so long now, I finally connected the dots. Lately, I've been getting back on board, and find that fixing my diet is far more effective than trying to jump straight into even a basic fitness routine. So, relative baby steps or else I'll quit in three days. You'll see that my diet goals are way bigger than my fitness goals, and that's okay because it's where I experience the most impact for my efforts.

July is becoming a month of positive change for me, so I thought I might rejoin the NF forums for a challenge so I have a place to record my goals, wins, and losses. The conspiracy is that I am not capable of following these things all the way through, so here's to proving that wrong. Hence, the challenge title. The challenge officially starts July 9th, but since I'm already underway I'm setting up the starter post now. As an aside, one day I see growing into an assassin but for now my actual real-world practices are much more reflective of adventurers. So here I am!

The theme is to reset and develop generally healthy practices that address both the mind and body, hopefully to restore my spirits and energy by the end of the month:

Goal #1 / Diet: Whole30 until August 2nd (or as close as humanly possible given budget limitations, I am not worried about being crazy strict).

Goal #2 / Fitness: Walk outside at least 20 minutes every day.
Goal #3 / Fitness: Don't sit at the desk longer than two hours without standing and moving around even a little bit. I work from home and have no natural interruptions, so this happens a lot.

Goal #4 / Life: Complete one four week Coursera course, topic TBD but current contenders include Communication Science, Intro to Probability and Data, or R Programming.

Let's do this!

I'll be following along! I too work from home so I can really relate to #3. Best of luck and I'm sure you can finish the 4 weeks.

P.S. Where in Germany, if you don't mind saying? I lived there for a couple years and miss it.

First day checkin!

A note on my Whole30 is that I can't hit ideal portions all the time, my main focus and motivation here is to not be eating trash food.

  1. Diet: I ate less than usual today, but ate whole. Super loaded scrambled eggs (3) for breakfast, sausage with a tomato coconut milk curry for lunch, and then stuffed mushrooms with more eggs (2) for dinner. Ate a few nectarines and part of a banana throughout the day as well!
  2. Fitness: Whoops, I had forgotten today was the first day of the challenge and forgot to get outside on purpose. All the grocery stores are closed on Sunday so my usual outside trip didn't happen naturally!
  3. Fitness: I took it fairly easy today and used a lot of household chores to make sure I was up and moving around a bit throughout the day.
  4. Life: Still researching which Coursera route I want to go, planning to crack one open and start Monday (tomorrow). It's difficult to choose between A ) a topic I think is relevant to my professional aspirations right now or B ) just take one that's plain fun!

I've been living in Trier for the last year, and was in Cologne for nearly a year before that! I love it here in Germany. What brought you to/took you away from here and where were you based out of?

Ugh, it's so difficult sometimes! What do you do? I'm a web dev/designer/blog writer. :) Freelancing now, but ideally one of these side businesses I'm building up will support me fully one day.

They way I see it you should choose one that will enhance your life. I think that would be something that I'd want to learn rather than something else required for work. I know I'd sure be alot more invested in it if it was something I was interested in. Make that part of your challenge that much easier on yourself I say. But maybe for you something to grow your business and work might be better.

I do some low-man-on the totem pole website maintenance stuff. Working for a family business doing alot of digital busy work essentially. Nothing impressive.

First I lived there during 8th grade. My step-father was German and worked there that year. We were a couple hours north of Munich. I then went back to Germany for a year doing study abroad and I was in Munich. I loved Cologne when I visited it. I loved die Dom Turmbesteigung. Lol. that was a hell of a climb.

Day 2 checkin:

  1. Diet: Loaded scrambled eggs for breakfast, baked fries and boiled veggies for lunch, and salmon, boiled potatoes, and broccoli for dinner. Nectarines and bananas as fillers throughout the day. We treated ourselves to a little grape juice which is questionable as far as Whole30 goes, but in the end I'm calling it okay.
  2. Fitness: Multiple trips outside the house! Win.
  3. Fitness: Definitely was up and down, almost to the point of distraction.
  4. Life: Since I largely focused on launching a new podcast, I didn't end up finalizing my Coursera choice. My goal for Day 3 is to get the freak started.

General notes – this is actually now the start of Week 2 on the Whole30 plan. I'm not having particular cravings for bad food or anything, but I am getting very tired of the amount of effort/prep/time that goes into cooking. I just want some easy-make meals that don't suck ya know??

Day 3 checkin:

  1. Diet:
    • Breakfast: 3 loaded scrambled eggs (loaded for me typically means bacon, onions, paprika, green onions, spinach and the eggs whipped in coconut milk)
    • Lunch: Mashed potatoes, tuna (1/2 can), and spinach
    • Dinner: Baked french fries and boiled frozen veggies
    • Snacks: Peaches and bananas
    • Drinks: Coffee, water
  2. Fitness: Took a trip to the grocery store! This is always a decent 20 minute round trip ordeal at least, walking to and from.
  3. Fitness: I didn't track it closely but I was pretty good about getting up today.
  4. Life: I settled on Pattern Discovery in Data Mining, since advanced text analysis is something I want to be able to do for a hobby side project of mine. Went through the orientation session! Hopefully I'm not in over my head here.

When I did whole 30, I ate a lot of pulled pork... and still do. Usually I can find a shoulder,  tenderloin,  or spare ribs cheap/on sale at the grocery store. Then I'd just do it in slow cooker following nom nom paleo's kalua pig recipe... 1 strip of bacon per pound,  salt on top,  cook for like 16 hours.

When it's done the sky's the limit with what you can do with it for additional seasoning,  sauce whatever.

Wow, those bike tours you did sound awesome! I hope I'll be able to do something like that, too :D

It was just the one, but it was a doozy! Went from (just outside) San Diego to (just outside) Salt Lake City. And... if I can do it, almost anyone can do it. I went super slow, 30-40 miles a day maybe. My farthest days were 60-75 miles, and there were only a couple of those. Honestly it was more the mental stamina and survival stuff (being prepared, pushing through exhaustion, and getting creative in a pinch) than the actual biking. Though the biking WAS hard and I had to walk a good portion of the mountains. If you ever have questions about doing a solo bike tour just hit me up :-) I am far from being an athlete and there were times I wanted to quit but it was such a great experience. I can give you all the non-athlete, doing-it-for-fun advice... some people get real intense.

Oh! A note on the cost of Whole30 – it's 12~ days into our Whole30 and we've already spent the upper limit of what we normally do in a month. And we're still even doing it on the super cheap side (not much in the way of organic, for example). So, it's a good thing I got those raises!
