J3NN - 0 for 3... Trying again

J3NN

Recommended Posts

In my last challenge,

I started with a great post and then completely disappeared. So the long story about why is in the spoiler.

Spoiler

Four weeks ago after hearing that my next door neighbor growing up as a child had been diagnosed with aggressive cancer and had passed away rather suddenly, I was giving our sick cat medicine and my phone rang. I didn't answer, you don't have any extra hands when you have a cat rolled up in a blanket while you try to force liquid medicine out of the syringe into their throat instead of all over everything else. My phone rang again. I still didn't answer. My daughter's phone rang, she answered it. She blanched white (okay, she's an indoor beast, so she was already white, but she got whiter, I swear). My husband was on the phone and he informed her he'd just crashed (on his bicycle) and broken his collar bone. He needed a ride to the hospital. Long story short, after what seemed like forever in the ER but was really only 8 hours, the break was confirmed, broken collarbone, broken rib, bruising, road rash and oh, scratches from the rose garden he crashed in. He was sent home with pain meds, a surgical consult and a sling (which he never wore). Surgical consult revealed no need for surgery, but he does have eight weeks off work to recover.

In the meantime, two days before his crash, he and our daughter started demolition on our kitchen. We're tearing everything out, Putting in new cabinets, new counter and re-configuring the kitchen. So I have a concrete floor, some make shift workspace in the kitchen, a fridge, an oven and a microwave, at this point I still have running water and I live in a walk-in pantry because every flat surface in my home is now covered with items from my kitchen cabinets. Was I smart and meal-prepped a bunch of healthy food to put in the freezer that would eliminate the need for dirtying dishes prepping, and make it easy to have healthy meals. No, of course not.

So fast forward, we pull out the sink and discover that for x number of years a pipe has been leaking in the wall behind the dishwasher. An entire section of the wall is rotted out, black with rot and yuck, and we now have to call in professionals. After two weeks, and three contractors plus my husband and daughter doing work, this is finally fixed. Meanwhile, our cabinets which were due in a week ago are still MIA.

So, I've had no running water in my kitchen... wait, it's not a kitchen, and we're eating frozen food and eating out, a lot.

Meanwhile, my husband, who used to work fulltime and ride his bike 15-20 hours a week has been cooped up in my house with nothing but a daily visit to the gym to keep him entertained. He's going stir crazy which is driving my jobless/schoolless daughter crazy, and I have been holding down the fort at work while the rest of the leadership team is out on vacation, so I'm mentally exhausted every night.

Needless to say, I withdrew...but I'm back. Again.

In the meantime, I realized I'm not too late to join this, so I'm here. I need the accountabillibuddies here to keep making forward progress, especially since this time I'm going on an 11 day vacation and my gym class is over.

My goals this time:

Here and following again. I'm sorry to hear about your husband! I hope he is healing well. And your kitchen... omg... I'd go stir crazy with a set up like that. I hope it is marching closer to finished faster now and that the cabinets appear pronto!

Oh my gosh! Sorry to hear about the mishaps and mayhem! I go crazy with a small kitchen, no kitchen would have me gone bonkers. Hope things start going better on that front and glad you're back to try again! :D

Day 1 Check-in

I can't count yesterday, but I did spend quality time putting together my new style guide for my blog brand and have picked my color scheme, so that was good towards my blog work. I might still write later, but we'll see, it's already late and there's dinner and family time...

We did go hiking today, We did two different hikes with lunch sandwiched in between. Over the course of the drive up the mountain and back down again we had a temperature range from a low of 47 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 105... gotta love Southern California in the summertime when you can climb over 8000 feet and have the luck of getting caught in a thunderstorm that delivers 3 inches of hail!

I found a couple of rock treasures and took pictures of them, practicing a technique for blog photography, and there's a picture of the hail in there for you too!

Thank you ladies for your kind words, my hubby is doing well, and life goes on :) The kitchen is a pain, but the end result will be worth it in the end, I'm sure of it!

Day 2 check-in

Today I spent an hour working on a draft blog post and I completed a 1 hour arms workout at the gym. Yesterday, after my check in I almost finished my style guide and even started working on my logo for my blog.

I am surprised that I went to the gym a day after a hike, and that I'm pleasantly sore after using the gym equipment. Usually I default to easier as opposed to pushing myself so while I feel good for working out, I don't usually feel the good kind of muscle soreness. I have an appointment with a girlfriend to go back Wednesday night.

Last night I had a horrible night's sleep. I was dreaming the entire night. Very vivid dreams. Nothing bad, and nothing good, just dreams so real that I was exhausted when I woke up because I felt like I'd been doing all the things in all the dreams all night long. I made the decision right then to get back to working out. It's only been two weeks since I had a workout, but apparently it matters.

On the kitchen front, three boxes of our cabinets have been delivered. Now they're going through a quality inspection. I guess they have to wait for the rest of them to show up before they'll schedule the install, but all the demolition and reparation is done, so we're ready when they are.

No real update today, I haven't made any forward progress on my goals. I may still work on my blog post, we'll see, I'm kind of beat still. I had another night of vivid dreams and was tired all day.

Kitchen...the cabinets are all in and will be delivered here on Thursday. No date for installation at this point sadly. We leave for vacation next Wednesday so I guess I'm not going to have my kitchen in before we go. :(

Nothing to report today, not feeling that great, just trying to make it through the day. Tried to find some research to support my blog post and found a couple potential items. Nothing else.

Feel better today, was going to go the gym but was so close to finishing a project so I stayed and did that. Will go to gym tomorrow afternoon. Since I was feeling bad for skipping again I came home and worked on my blog post for a while. Found some images, worked on keywords and the headline too. Yay me.

I'm brain dead, so don't trust anything you see here. Or do... I dunno. BUT at least I'm checking in. I missed yesterday because we made a spontaneous decision to go to the beach for dinner. The beach was worth it though. Also, we walked in the sand, and even though it wasn't a real work out,  that combined with all the house cleaning I did today is going to count as my second workout for this week instead of that gym trip that never happened. Today was busy and I didn't get to finish my blog but I'll make time tomorrow and keep on track for four over the challenge. We cleaned, introduced our cat sitter to the cats and then ran errands for vacation. Now I have everything and I can finish laundry and start packing. Tomorrow we're celebrating my Dad's birthday and trying to get in hike too, not going to stress about that since vacay will include tons of hiking and starts Wednesday.

Kitchen cabinets are in my kitchen, boxed, waiting for inspection on Monday. If they pass inspection we can schedule installation... Here's hoping for July 31 for that to happen.

I signed up for Amerithon Challenge with my family. The three of us are going to do it as a team. My husband, as the athlete and cyclist will carry more of the miles, but we're going to use it to keep us hiking every weekend. He thinks we can finish it by the end of the year. So I think I'll start recording anything I do towards that in my tracker here too. I'll be using mapmywalk, unless you guess have other suggestions? My fitbit died and I haven't been motivated to buy a new one.

Now, some le Tour and reading and readying for bed.

My fitbit died in May and I haven't thought about getting a new one. In fact I'm going with a clock on my arm for the first time since my teenage years (so a decade and change ago). It is interesting to not feel so obsessively attached to what time it is. So right now, I have no plans to get a new fitbit.

Sigh, I just can't finish this blog, I'm chipping away at it and making progress, but I'm just not set up enough to crank these out quickly. AND apparently I picked a hard topic to write my first post for this...

Meanwhile, I did get a hike in, two miles today along the Santa Ana River Trail. We had a little bit more rain just as we finished which made the temps so nice. It was hot to start, we weren't sure it had been a good idea at all.

Then we did my dad's birthday dinner, so the day disappeared quickly... I woke up late this morning, not feeling 100%. Not sure if I over slept, or if the smoke from the fire got me. Come to think of it, the same thing happened last week with the fire. Maybe I'm more sensitive than I think. There's a red flag warning in Montana right now, I really hope we don't get there to find wildfires, that would make for a sad vacation indeed.

All in all it was a good day. I'm exhausted from the hike. I made progress on the blog, albeit slow, and I spent quality time with my family on two separate occasions, so it was good.

Hooray, it's about time! Hopefully they pass and the reno can continue onwards... why with the gap between inspection and installation though?

That is one of many good questions about this whole process. On their end, I can't answer. On my end, it's because we leave for vacation Wednesday and will be gone. If they could come tomorrow and do it that would be even better, but we all know that isn't going to happen...

I found a blog post on how to make templates so I can make this process easier for me. I'm going to work on those and the posts while I'm on vacation, so I'm not going to stress about it right now.

Skipping the workouts in favor of lovely Montana hiking starting Thursday.

Checking in. I've got that down...

One more day at work, and so beyond ready. I definitely have short-timer's disease. The cabinets passed inspection, but we still aren't scheduled for installation. They're supposed to call us to schedule, surprisingly they didn't do that in the first five minutes after they were given the all clear... or in any of the minutes past then for that matter.

I think I'm going to start my vacation early by vegging out and watching some tv now.

[emoji3] I hope you have a wonderful and inspiring vacation! I'm on vacation next week but I'm chaperoning kids around Nova Scotia. I'd rather be hiking (envy).

We're going to visit Glacier National Park, among other things, I know you're into the national parks, I'll send you a postcard if your DM me your address. [emoji3]

Do you know what kind of blog you are going to have yet? I'm not sure if I read that anywhere or not...

I'm writing a life hacking blog geared towards married, working women. I want to share tips and tricks for making life easier so you have time to enjoy the weird and do crazy fun stuff.

Made it to Montana, is 1030pm and the AC guy is on the roof trying to fix the AC. I didn't even know they had AC in the condo. Certainly don't need it tonight but the home owner things differently since the guy's here...

This is by far the nicest condo we've ever stayed in, it's right on the Swan River, a cafe literally next door and a bar across the street. It's the first place we've vacationed where you could believe Sam and Dean could walk in at any minute.

Still no installation date for the kitchen, but here I have an amazing kitchen that is far better stocked than I imagined.

Tried a local beer Summer Honey at the Garden Bar and had a barbecue burger with steak fries, nothing fancy but hit the spot.

Also we flew Allegiant for the first time and I have absolutely no complaints. Considering I was terrified and expecting the worst, it felt like a 5-Star experience. We did fly over the fire in Modesto, the smoke was crazy, so big. Hope they get a handle on that and stay safe.

Tomorrow the real fun begins :)

I have seen enough deer that I've already lost count. I discovered Montana Sapphires and a crystal called veszelyite that is amazing. We sat on the dock and dangled our feet in the water. We drove half way down the lake. We wandered the town on foot and sampled all kinds of local deliciousness from cinnamon rolls to bison meatloaf with Moose Drool beer. An amazing stout, starts like Guinness but finishes like heaven. Tried to figure out how to write a blog about the fishes in the lake, to no avail.

Kitchen install scheduled for August 1. Finally, yay!  Afraid it could be mid August before the counter is in the way this has been going. But one step at a time I guess.

Today we started with a hike along the Swan River. Our condo is on this river, and we spent all day on it from the hike to ending the day with a three hour kayak tour. We've seen Osprey, red-winged blackbirds, turtles, a heron, fish, ducks, Canadian geese, and best of all a Fisher. The Fisher was swimming in the water and I thought it wa s a beaver, but it had a pointy tale. I looked it up and they're adorable!

 fisher-john-jacobson-wdfw.jpg

Food today was breakfast in (eggs, ,salsa and cheese), lunch in (sandwich, chips and local & Ranier cherries) and ice cream (Grasshopper Mint at Sweat Peaks) and dinner at the Old Pub & Sub (taco salad and some shared garlic Parmesan fries with a half pint of Wild Mile Wheat from a local brewery). Bonus part was that they were showing the Tour de France.

I came up with a way to be blogging. I'm going to write a vacation travel review blog of all the places and things we've seen, tried and done. Not tonight thought, we signed up to do a 5k tomorrow, so that's the focus for tonight, especially after all that exercise today. But I'll have a souvenir shirt from the 5k and It'll be the first one I've done in years. It's on the same trail we hiked this morning. I think I'm going to be one tired puppy after this vacation.

Two day check in here, did the 5k yesterday and was mostly lazy today. Lots of driving and site seeing and eating.

Worked on documenting everything fit the travel blog, got to the start of our kayak trip, will do more later this week. Going to Glacier finally tomorrow :)
