I agree that parentheses should be used to avoid confusion. I deliberately put up the problem like that to find out who has been taught what. Right now on FB, there is an amazing argument going on. I was particularly interested in your interpretation of the problem, because you teach this stuff and you have closer access to textbooks than I do. We have the same interpretation and I was never aware of anything different until I ran into the discussion on FB a few months ago and I looked up the question. x=a/bc, where a=24 b=2 c=12 I consider the rules to be a mule. Therefore: x = a / b * c = 24 / 2 / 12 = 12 * 12 = 144 I am in Camp 144, because I find NO Rule anywhere in the Order of Operations Rule Book saying that multiplication by juxtaposition must be resolved by inserting a multiplication operation between b and c, and now I have to resolve the operations from left to right, like a mule. I agree with the clarity. If I wanted to be clear on the answer being 1, then I would write: x = a/(bc) ------------------------------------------- So if I go into the realm of physics, here is a Wikipedia article on calculating eddy current losses due to magnetic field. Sam Ashen
Meanwhile on teh internetz, the war is still going strong. Here is something I found: Quote I have found that depending on how I type an expression into my TI-85, it comes out with two different answers. If I type 36/6(25-11*2), the answer comes out to be 2. However, if I type 36/6*(25-11*2), the answer comes out to be 18. The difference is whether I put the multiplication symbol between the 6 and the parenthesis or not. I've been under the impression this should make no difference; with or without the symbol, a number up snug against the parenthesis still implies a multiplication symbol. Help? ....... Your two expressions in the calculator are 36 / 6 ( 25 - 11 * 2 ) and 36 / 6 * ( 25 - 11 * 2 ) The problem is that some calculators that allow multiplications to be implied as in the former case treat that as a higher precedence operation (as some algebra texts say), while others treat all multiplications alike (as most texts do, in my experience). My world is still upside down. I will also assume that the two text books you taught from are silent on the issue. I did look at my physics text and my calculus text. They explicitly avoid the issue. I am also "pretty sure" I have been taught to avoid this specific issue with brackets. The writers usually avoided single-line text, unless it was easy to make the expression clear. WhiteGhost
So I asked Ghostlet about this.
