Well, that is a shame. Should we talk about the weather? And other R.E.M references, perhaps? If the parents do not lift, it is hard to explain to them the value in terms other than the clinical. And that is so boring.

Pretty much - and the conversation on this topic moves along very slowly.

Something very amusing from a year ago:  My father was calling my sister and commented how much into lifting I am.  Of course my sister already knows all of this because that's all that is ever on FB.

Today was a rest day.  Dinner was taco salad without the taco and some kind of smoothie.

In other news, my property is rented and I am a landlord for another year or so.

Sam Ashen Summer Swole Program, Day 9 of 30:

I could not ditch my parents for CounterFit this morning.  I could not ditch my parents at all today.  So today was obviously not going to be a gym day.  So I did something completely unthinkable today.  I ran.

So it turns out my route is only 2.21 miles each way, or 4.42 total and it takes me at least a whopping 48 minutes to complete that.  The pace is 5.5 miles per hour.

Well.  That makes me a warrior and not a ranger.

@Emerald_Dragonfly - What do the rules say?  (besides shooting the person who wrote it that way)

x=a/bc

Is it clear or is it ambiguous?

Does (a/c)(b/d) = ab/cd or does it not?

It should be clear, but parentheses are preferred to avoid confusion.

I agree that parentheses should be used to avoid confusion.  I deliberately put up the problem like that to find out who has been taught what.  Right now on FB, there is an amazing argument going on.

I was particularly interested in your interpretation of the problem, because you teach this stuff and you have closer access to textbooks than I do.  We have the same interpretation and I was never aware of anything different until I ran into the discussion on FB a few months ago and I looked up the question.

x=a/bc, where

a=24

b=2

c=12

I consider the rules to be a mule.  Therefore:

x = a / b * c = 24 / 2 / 12 = 12 * 12 = 144

I am in Camp 144, because I find NO Rule anywhere in the Order of Operations Rule Book saying that multiplication by juxtaposition must be resolved by inserting a multiplication operation between b and c, and now I have to resolve the operations from left to right, like a mule.

I agree with the clarity.  If I wanted to be clear on the answer being 1, then I would write:

x = a/(bc)

-------------------------------------------

So if I go into the realm of physics, here is a Wikipedia article on calculating eddy current losses due to magnetic field.

P={\frac {\pi ^{2}B_{\text{p}}^{\,2}d^{2}f^{2}}{6k\rho D}},

If I were texting this in the absence of advanced formatting tools, I am forced to type it as:

P = (πBdf)²/(6kρD) instead of

P = (πBdf)²/6kρD

....and I still can't make a subscript! :(

------------------------------

Online, I had people both in Camp 1 and Camp 144 telling me this is basic algebra.

I'm with you in the math camp. That's how we teach it in sixth grade. If there are operations of equal rank (like multiplication and division) you work from left to right.

ETA: of course teachers teach a lot of things that are a bit incorrect in order to make things easier to understand. So I may be wrong.

I honestly get the impression that there is a minority competing convention - Camp 1.  Meanwhile, nowhere can I find an Ultimate Authority.

In board game terms, somewhere on one of my FB groups, there is an extremely heated argument over a nuance in the rules.

Meanwhile on teh internetz, the war is still going strong.  Here is something I found:

Quote

I have found that depending on how I type an expression into my TI-85,
it comes out with two different answers. If I type 36/6(25-11*2), the
answer comes out to be 2. However, if I type 36/6*(25-11*2), the
answer comes out to be 18. The difference is whether I put the
multiplication symbol between the 6 and the parenthesis or not.

I've been under the impression this should make no difference; with or
without the symbol, a number up snug against the parenthesis still
implies a multiplication symbol.  Help?

.......

Your two expressions in the calculator are

  36 / 6 ( 25 - 11 * 2 )

and

  36 / 6 * ( 25 - 11 * 2 )

The problem is that some calculators that allow multiplications to
be implied as in the former case treat that as a higher precedence
operation (as some algebra texts say), while others treat all
multiplications alike (as most texts do, in my experience).

My world is still upside down. D:

My next quest is to find a text that says one thing, and then find a text that says another thing! :D

I have never seen a text that disagrees with me and Sloth.  To be fair, I have only taught Algebra from two texts...

Online, that is where I am at.  Absent knowledge of any special rule, I have to execute equal-level operations in order from left to right.  Right now I cannot find a text that disagrees, but the number of texts I have distinct recollection of reading is zero.  I will add to that your count of two text books.  I will also assume that the two text books you taught from are silent on the issue.

I did look at my physics text and my calculus text.  They explicitly avoid the issue.  I am also "pretty sure" I have been taught to avoid this specific issue with brackets.  The writers usually avoided single-line text, unless it was easy to make the expression clear.  What I saw in my calculus text was:

x=-b/(2a) in reference to a line of symmetry in a parabola.
