My mother makes 1870s to 1910s replica hats. That image is unfortunately a true representative. (One of hers has a stuffed gopher on the brim. Next fancy hat battle I'm totally throwing it in the ring.)

  6. Hey all, I’ve just joined a local gym and now that I’ve been shown around and taught how to use the machines I need to build a workout routine. I’m just so overwhelmed by all the Instagram, Pinterest, ect suggestions. I am a 28 year female, roughly 130lbs and 5’7”. I used to be a cross country running in college, which has lead to an avoidance of all gyms and a weak ankle. My main goals are to look good in a bikini/naked and to get healthy/create help habits so I can be healthy when I’m older. I’m just have no idea how to get there. My gym has all the usual free weights, machines, barbells, and treadmills. I really just need someone to go “do this and this to start, then add this”
  7. So I've been combining squats and deadlifts on one day, and bench and OHP on the other day. And each day, one lift is heavy and the other light. So there's four variations. But I'm thinking about switching back to bench/squat and ohp/deadlift, and making all my lifts heavy again. The light lifts (10 or so reps) suck. And I'm not sure they're even making me stronger because I give up from feeling yuck well before failure. I was only doing them because I assumed I needed them for hypertrophy to support my heavy lifts. But not everyone agrees that higher reps are necessary for hypertrophy... and if there are two paths to getting strong, I'd rather take the one that suits my physiology and preferences. Even though the entire internet claims women have more endurance and can do more reps, the entire internet is wrong about me at least. I have less endurance and can do fewer reps than everyone else. I will probably still do some medium rep squats, because I feel they're helping me nail down the form. Today I had another go at the 170 deadlift. Got one more rep than last time. I decided to do heavy OHP instead of light squats, and I looked in my notebook and saw that I defeated 3x5x60lb last time, so it would be time for a new weight. I thought "Oh, you can't attempt a new OHP weight after heavy deadlifts", to which I answered "Suck it" and attempted 65lb anyway. PR!!! I got 3 reps.

Thanks for the TED talk video. I just watched it on my own, but I'll make sure to watch it again with my wife. It doesn't really give any answers to anything, but it was a good talk nonetheless. I will answer your thoughts more specifically when I'm on my computer instead of on my phone

Ran today. 2nd time outside. Discovered that the trails are still way too snowy for running. Also rolled my ankle. Ouch.
  12. Today's food We went out for lunch on the fly because it's Good Friday therefore a bank holiday so it's reason to celebrate and the atmosphere is always great at the start of a 4 day weekend (though it's not for me). I had the premium surf and turf - sirloin steak, calamari, king prawns, lobster mac n cheese and chunky chips. We also had dessert - this is a cherry brownie, with cherry sauce on chocolate cookie dough with vanilla ice cream and a churro from TH's churro ice cream sundae. I didn't need anything else, this was more than enough.

O Rangers, my Rangers! Some zero week occurrences: > I had a quantum mechanics exam Thursday that I was super scared for cos I’m not doing well in the class, but I knew how to do everything on it! Well, most everything. There’s some stuff I know in hindsight I got wrong, but hey. I think at the very least it went far better than the first exam. (If it didn’t, I think my soul might actually vaporize) > I’ve been taking a little bit longer route to walk home, which has the added benefit of having more trees. Prettier + more shade + more walking = ideal! (No sunburn!!) So, that’s a little thing I can do while I try and get my sh!t together to do other things. ...Or maybe I should try and incorporate more little things like this instead of waiting for the day when I can do More. That seems like a smart idea. Cos I don’t think that day is coming any time soon, heh. > ...I think that’s everything of note. Hope you all had a good Good Friday, and have a nice Easter weekend! <3

[SymphonicDan] the Runaway Professor [Level 25]

Well that didn't happen So here's a summary of what I've been up to for the past (nearly) 3 months! CoLife Productivity House in Medellín, Colombia: A friend organized a shared villa in the second-biggest city in Colombia - a destination very popular now with other travelling entrepreneurs - with a focus on Productivity. It was only by chance that I ended up here (my flight to Ecuador was messed up by the airline) but it ended up being a really awesome and useful experience! We had: 14 of us sharing this massive villa an office space a pool (swimming in the rain!) group WHM breathing sessions, ice baths, and calisthenics workouts visiting chefs and two really bad masseuses two parties where we welcomed the wider community lots of strange fruit (mangosteen? grenadine? guanábana (soursop)? passion fruit? delicious...) As it happened, quite a lot of us were working on online courses, so it was super helpful to share perspectives with the other entrepreneurs. My plan was to finish the course entirely by the 22nd February, but it was actually a lot more work than I had anticipated. Furthermore I was more self-conscious than I'd expected with my voice and presentation when talking to a camera in an empty room - so it delayed me while I calibrated my performance. To be honest I found the entire process quite stressful, but at least now I can be proud that I finished it Online Course Release: Finally in the second week of March I finished the entire course, and released it on Udemy! The current challenge is to improve the visibility of my course on the website. When a course is new, Udemy needs to establish that your course is worth showing to more students, and therefore looks at some mysterious secret combination of: course rating number of reviews number of students amount watched of the course So if you're interested in improving your Practical Mental Math, and want to help me out with some of these metrics, here's a link with 15 free coupons for the course - just register on Udemy if you aren't already and you'll have full access It's basically 86 minutes of videos, with a bunch of practice activities for you to do at your own pace: Santa Marta & La Guajira: As I finished the course, I travelled to the Caribbean coast and explored that area of Colombia. I'd show you photos, but unfortunately I lost my phone while on a trail run in the hills above Quebrada Valencia so the majority of my photos are gone... but if you search for "La Guajira", "Punta Gallinas" and "Palomino" then you get the idea. The most entertaining place was the Taroa Sand Dunes - they are these steep dunes at the extreme north of Colombia that just falls directly into the sea, like a beach that's all at the wrong angle. So of course I tried running up the hill, dive-rolling down the hill, and got a group together for the Official Taroa Dunes Long Jump competition (a couple of us were getting over 6 metres down the slope, which was fun). Now: Back in the UK, doing some software work, and planning my next travels within Europe, then teaching at some Summer Schools again during July and August. WIll probably rejoin for a challenge at some point too Just I need to have a schedule planned before I can really commit to any particular goals.
  15. I'm a bit overwhelmed, but I think I figuring this out. I've never played a character or participated in a forum group. I did my first 4wc and it went well. Now... what? As I'm interested in calisthenics and body weight tricks, I'm leaning toward lurking among the assassins for follow up ideas. There are just so, so many things to factor in to this being alive thing! Healthy, maintainable diet. Fitness. Social life. Personal growth. Keeping me happy. I know, pick one to focus on, but what if I pick the wrong one! Eek! Seriously though, I think I will join the next 4wc, maybe with a guild choice by then, and focus on learning my TDEE needs, so that I can subsequently learn how to do kindly, incremental cutting sessions as needed. Though I really think that if I eat decent food and do fun things I'll be fine. I think I will do some research on Parkour just to keep body weight work interesting and challenging And, of course, being female, continuing to build upper body ability. I will gladly take ideas and suggestions about how to get the most out of the forums, as I feel a little like i'm flapping at loose ends over here. Ready to learn and join everyone in this game.

I am legit curious about this. Keep that option in your back pocket. With their coping skills I'm not sure what they would actually do if you drove them to like, Swampscott or something and just left.

I love being able to discuss this with all the clever, wise people here. If dieting and thinness culture were a devil's snare plant trying to prevent my escape, these forums would be the sunlight that will eventually overcome it.

    Flea’s Super Secret Mystery Challenge!

Stupid crush story to come eventually when I don't want to light everyone on fire. My errands with both of the idiots were such annoying processes and I'm still short on sleep, which means I'm short on patience. Looks good. Thanks! Eh. My father basically spends all his time in that room regardless. He probably won't ever sit on the couch though because he has a recliner that he lives in. I don't understand why we got the new one anyway, unless it was retail therapy. Really wish I could have abandoned them somewhere. But at this point the errands are done so there's that.

    Raptron Turns 50?!?! [Challenges]

I express this much surprise and delight any time I survive another year, so I am definitely not coming for youuuu! Aye, aye!
  22. Something like that If you're doing it purely by converting time into points then best to keep the points for different activities separate - otherwise a 2-minute cold shower gets lost alongside a 45-minute walk or music practice. I guess the only important thing really is that whatever each person uses, works for them. If anyone is interested in the way I'm tracking these points at the moment - here's a copy of the spreadsheet (I'm not updating this copy of the file - it's just for illustration)
  23. Week 0 has been going okay so far. I've hit my step goal 2 days (Wednesday and Thursday) and have been on target and tracking food since my cycle ended Tuesday. Working at home today to get a much needed meal planning session in while I work. I use the slowcooker/rice cooker and oven quite a bit. Went to the gym on Wednesday and beat my previous cycling record of 5.77 miles in 30 min. I did 6.02 miles in 30 min! Pretty happy about that. The reason I started logging my day is because it makes me much more aware of how I'm spending my time. It's amazing how many hours I've wasted away. And yea, it definitely helps.
