musicalgal123
Hello. Musicalgal123 here. Time to finally get myself going and in shape. Been trying for awhile now. Even tried blogging about it (which I sometimes still do) but I find that I very quickly get burnt out. Motivation is a huge factor for me. I've tried to do a bunch of different things to help but the longest I've ever stayed going was about two months. Looking to make full life changes, you know? A little bit about me. I'm a nerd (obviously). I am hugely into Science Fiction and the ideas of a Dystopian future. I am into fantasy, but no where near as much. I'm a Gamer. Mostly table-tops and Live Action Roleplaying Games. I love me some zombies. Star Wars is my first and greatest nerd love. I am into Renaissance Faires. Fitness wise? I love Martial Arts, Stage Combat, and Archery. I hope to eventually be able to run a 5k and keep up with my karate instructor in class (endurance wise. I realize that I have a lot to learn, lol). I would also love to regularly meet 10,000 steps a day without difficulty. I've heard a lot of great things about this community and am hoping that it can help encourage me to reach my goals and get where I want to be. I want fitness to be an active part of my life. Maybe you guys can help motivate me to get there. May the Force be ever by your side. Link to comment
Jallen720
It's awesome you're trying to get in shape. I too have struggled quite a few times with getting healthier. I've spent around 2 - 3 months getting into great shape and feeling awesome and then just letting myself go again. I honestly don't know why I struggle so much with staying healthy once I've done all the work. This time I'm going to continue improving myself even when I've met my goal. I want to make fitness and health part of my life not just a phase I go through when I've let myself go too far. This site as been amazingly helpful, not just informative but motivational too. Hopefully you can get as much out of it as I have. I'm new to the community too but so far everyone seems super helpful! Maybe we can motivate each other to stick with it and push ourselves beyond even what we believe is possible! I can't even remember the last time I played a table top game. It's been years but I remember playing a LOTR table top game every Sunday at this local gaming club. Great times! I used to love going to the Renaissance Faire back in the day. You have me in a total state of nostalgia right now lol. Give it time and determination and I'm sure you'll be able to outrun even your instructor lol. It's awesome that you're into all that. I want to start learning martial arts and parkour but I have a little ways to go before that's a possibility. I like the interesting mixture between "May the force be with you" and "May the odds be ever in your favor". Star Wars and Hunger Games fan? lol MAJOR kudos for your signature! More motivational words have never been spoken! =) Best of luck to you! Link to comment
musicalgal123
Yes I am a Star Wars and Hunger Games fan, but that is not the origin of the line I said. I used to do a Star Wars mud RPG and I didn't want to do the same as everyone else and have every greeting and goodbye be "May the Force Be With You." My character dealt with loneliness and she would turn to meditating in the Force as a way to get over that loneliness. She eventually just started saying "May the Force be ever by your side" and it stuck. Link to comment
Jallen720
Lol I had to do a double take because I thought I misread it. I wonder if they're going to keep the original saying for the new ones. I'm so PSYCHED! And to think by the time the new trilogy begins, if we can stick with exercising and eating healthy, we'll be in the best shape of our lives! Have you already started a routine or anything? Link to comment
musicalgal123
What I had been doing for awhile was the Zombies, Run 5k trainer. And then on off days trying to do a "TV Workout" in which I say something like "Every time someone mentions the Force do 10 push ups." But I got burnt out. Not sure why either. I'm going to do a bit of research before I rebuild a routine. May use the old set up again. It may have just been a motivation issue causing the burn out. But definitely gonna do some research first. I did recently buy a fit bit. One of the goals I'm gonna work with is trying to get my steps per day to go up. Waiting for now. In a few weeks I'll take the average (minus any outliers caused by faire season) and use that as a starting point to find a first goal. Baby steps. Link to comment
Jallen720
Never heard of a "TV Workout". Sounds like an interesting concept. Did they really mention the force that many times? lol I've always wanted to do a zombie run like Run For Your Lives. Right now I'm doing incline runs twice a day just to get myself back into the swing of things. I need to get my heart and lungs back into shape before I do anything too intense. Then I'll start P90X in about a week and a half. I love it but it's tough, especially being as out of shape as I am. I've done it before but never like this. I never really thought about tracking my steps per day. Think I might try that, I do a lot of walking and hiking so it would be interesting to see what my count is. Definitely going to work on taking baby steps instead of jumping in. I have a really bad habit of trying to power through stuff without building up to it first, like pull ups or burpees (pull ups especially because I've been struggling with for years due to bad shoulders). I just get impatient I guess and want to be on top of it from day 1. That's why I like P90X because you have to pace yourself or your going to burn out. Link to comment
optimistsmile
Musicalgal, I am brand new here as well. Btw, thanks for reminding me about the Renaissance Fair, I've missed it the last two years. Not this time! Anyway, I notice that when I run, I do a LOT better when I have a good playlist- I mean, it's so good that I look like a maniac, running past people while mouthing the words. It just keeps me going, and takes my mind off the burn. One other thing that helps me is running in the evening, so that I don't have the sun beating down on me. Everyone has their favorite time to run, so maybe see what time is best for you. Also, I love the Runkeeper app for tracking goals and personal records. It feels great to get that little electronic trophy.I like that you do the TV workout, but if you want to be more consistent, I would just get some workout DVDs that appeal to you. My collection is ridiculous. Like Jallen mentioned, P90X is a great one, but it totally depends on your goals. If greater running endurance is a goal, I would say in general, interval training and leg strengthening workouts have helped me the most, just because the quad burn is what typically gets me. Plyometrics is useful as well, and very good for strengthening the legs. It sounds like you already have the desire, you just need a little more consistency. Find something that is fun for you, and I guarantee your strength and endurance will improve! I should know, because I used to only be able to run for a block before getting winded. Keep at it!
