Aiming to Misbehave Browncoat Style

Recommended Posts

This is my first journal/blog type entry, so my guess is that I will improve in organizing thoughts and writing at the same time. But this is not about that. Instead I am here to document my journey to become fit and healthy through diet and exercise. I hope that anyone who reads this can learn from my mistakes and take this winding path a lot better than I know I will. The beginning of this is as good of a place to start as any.

I have never been a good eater. I would consume horrible foods for me, and lots of them. It was not unheard of to down a whole big bag of Starburst, a half gallon jug of orange juice, and five tacos from Taco Bell all in the same day! I should have ballooned to epic proportions at a younger age, but the combination of a strong metabolism and marching band in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and baseball all spring and summer kept weight gain at bay. When college began and all of those activities stopped, and my weight crept up and up. I went from one-hundred and thirty pounds at eighteen to over two hundred pounds by twenty-one. My cholesterol was high, my triglycerides were through the roof, and my blood pressure was creeping up. The doctor was worried about diabetes.

Then probably the best thing happened for both my health and my life. In about a 6 month period I met and began dating my wife (married two years now) and really focused on losing weight. This was almost exclusively through diet because I hated to move or exercise. I felt that any time I spent doing so would cut into my gaming or into my time spent with Beth. I dropped from two hundred plus to almost one-hundred and sixty pounds. But then I let my diet start to creep back to what it was and only intermittently exercised. As a result I am back to one-hundred and eighty pounds and ready to start making a life change.

Yoda said "Do. Or do not. There is no try." This is the new philosophy from which I am starting fresh. It doesn't matter that there have been numerous failed attempts to diet and lose weight. It doesn't matter that I was so obsessed about a number and not about my physical fitness level. What matters is that I am ready to move in the right direction with my diet and workout routine, and I am making the change now.

So here are my stats and a couple pics at day one. The vast majority of fat on my body gathers in my gut, so in clothes I don't look near as bad. But this is not the place to hide who we are.

Starting 07/01/2013

Weight: 180 pounds

Height: 5'8"

Waist: 34

Push-ups: 5-10 at a time

Pull-ups: 2

Chin-ups: 2

Not horrible, but this is all about getting in shape. Here are my current fitness goals:

Cut processed, sugary foods (and drinks) out of my diet

Limit my adult beverage consumption to just one or two a month

Slowly incorporate more Paleo into my diet (my goal is to be 80% eventually)

Don't miss a day on my weight training or cardio all the way through level 1

Run a 5k this fall

And life goals:

Move into our new apartment

Set my career in motion

Build the beginnings of a savings account

Work to be debt free

So how am I going to do it? Well, the diet and exercise is relatively simple. I am following the rebel fitness guide starting all the way with level 1. I wish to eventually be a religious ranger/scout (I love yoga) and I think the rebel fitness guide is a good starting point to get there. For my diet I will remove the bad stuffs more and more while incorporating more and more Paleo into my diet. I love fruits and vegetables so this is not too much of a stretch, but giving up all of the things I "just have to eat" will be a lot more difficult. But that is why I am here on Nerd Fitness. I hope to take advantage of the great resources and people to make the whole journey a heck of a lot more fun.

Everything is just more and more shiny with my life. And it will continue to get better. :)

So it is just Day 3, but I have already come to the realization that I am lazy and it has to stop now. I have done workout A and B one time on the Rebel Fitness Guide, and even though I did more than the recommended reps for the two sets I realized that I could have done more. It's not about just hitting a certain number and quitting. It's about doing as many as I can. I should be lifting and training until I am done and not until I hit a certain number of reps. It's not worth getting upset about so it is time to just move on and get on track on Friday! Might be switching to 10 pound weights instead of the 8's I started with. I also need an affordable set of adjustable dumbbells (we are moving and are tight on cash) . Any suggestions?

Diet wise things have been going great. I have been slowly adding in the more healthy food options and removing the horrible things I was consuming. I still have a battle everyday with Starburst (but then again everyone needs a nemesis).

Let's keep fighting everyone! :)

Day 4 and I am ready to crash into bed. Woke up at seven and ran a mile and a half this morning. Averaged 9:35 per mile which is faster than my previous record, so that makes me really happy. Spent most of the day packing books into boxes, and if you saw our book collection you would realize this is no small feat. 8 boxes later and we are only 40% through packing all of them. And that is after donating probably 30 or forty. On the diet front it was another good day with the highlight being kabobs. I made squash, onions, peppers, and carrots as my veggies, and chicken marinated in a mixture of pure maple syrup, chipotle peppers, and spices. Yum!

My wife and I are going to look at apartments in the new town tomorrow, so I might have to take my lower key day out of order with the rest. It is a strength training day and I hope I can fit it into the day. If not I will do it on Saturday and not take an "active rest" day before week two. I am feeling better (and sore) and don't want to miss any of my exercises. I will likely not be on very much tomorrow either because of things. Wish me luck!
