My Big Why

My Big Why is pretty simple.  I'm very tired of not having the energy to do what I want to do.   I look in the mirror and can't believe where the athlete went.  Finally I am starting to loose it mentally.  Very bad case of CRS.

Very specifically, I volunteer with a group that helps combat wounded vets.   We use SCUBA Diving as a way to help mitigate PTSD Symptoms and to help paralyzed vets recover.  Having a vet on SCUBA at 60' depth for an hour is similar to a treatment in a Hyperbaric chamber, and it's in an environment that is both stressful and relaxing at the same time.   The vets I work with tell me that it is as stressful as combat situations they have been in, but relaxing as well.  "I get to float around and look at all the pretty fish". I spent 10 years in the Air Force Combat Ops myself I've seen the same reactions.  It's why I fell in love with SCUBA 30 years ago.

There was a study done by John's Hopkins.  In the study they measured PTSD and Neurologic function before and after the trials. The trial included a course of study in SCUBA, certification as an Open Water Diver, and 10 total dives in an 3 day period.

The study showed a 80-100% reduction in PTSD symptom's.  The effects lasting past the study exit interviews 6 weeks later.  It also indicated an average 20% increase in neurologic function for the group.   Similar to a full year of Task Based Therapy.

As a Dive Master for the group, I am supposed to be there in case of emergency.  In my current level of fitness I could well become another accident victim while trying to rescue someone, and it scares the crap out of me.  So bad, that I've declined to help for the last few months.

An not wanting to help someone in need is just so antithetical to my being, it is depressing me.

The Art of Goal Setting

I’m the type of person that will be able to complete all PADI Dive Master physical tests at an average point value of 2.5.â€â€‹

I will walk 10,000 steps per day, in order to complete the walk to Mordor.  On weekends I will try to get 20,000 steps.

I will do body weight training on alternating days to increase my stamina to be safe in the water.

I will log all my food intake on a permanent  basis to give me a base line to understand how the foods I eat affect me.

I will do away with junk food, eat a proper diet to loose 47 pounds.

I will check in at NF and chart progress on a bi weekly basis to ensure I am holding myself accountable to the first 4.

The Journey Day 3:

Na na na na Batcave!!!

Thought a lot about the bat cave.   I don't have a problem with sleep.  90% of the time I get a solid 7-8 hours.  I don't use an alarm with the internal body clock waking me around 4:30 am.   I can't trash the junk food in the house, or the rest of my family will shoot me.  Will power when I'm motivate isn't really an issue, so it being in the house isn't really a problem.

My issue is that at my core I'm pure lazy.  I'll look for any excuse for NOT working out.   Too cold, too hot, have to walk to far across the house.  (ya, I do 10,000 steps a day without a problem, but 40' to the sun room is just too much bother.  Sheesh....

I have to do the batcave in 2 phases.

Phase I:

Take all the clothes off my Weider workout bench and move into my office.  (3' from my desk and not in the sun room that is either 30 or 110 degrees)

  • Get dumbbell handle for the Olympic weights that sit collecting dust on the barbell I'm scared to use with out a spotter.
  • Get a ORBITape to make it easier to do body measurements.
  • Get batteries for my Withings scale.

Phase 2: Mid Jan.

Son is going in the Navy, and will be vacating his room.   Second room also will become available as one of his military buddies that stays with us on the weekends is also moving his stuff out soon.

Once the bedrooms are available.

  • Get WIFI extender to reach rooms.
  • Move my office into the room
  • Move the Weider weight set into room (has pull up bar!!!).
  • Move connection to DVR to the bedroom

And so the adventure begins.

Been working on the academy quests.

Just did my first Recruit workout.  Well sorta anyway.   Let's see, I was gassed by the warm up.   I just could not get the full 3 sets in.

I know by sticking to it, it will get easier.   roflmao, It has to get easier, can't get harder.

Will report in again, in a week.

Good mornin' all.

So it's been about 10 days since I started.

I've been working through more quests.   Been getting between 10,000 and 19,000 steps per day, with an average around 14,000 or so.  I get 2 or more 1+ mile long walks every day. "Brisk Pace, 3.5 miles per hours"

Workouts have been tough to get through.   Its a question of available time right now.   Between 4 - 4 1/2 hour of daily commute, adequate sleep, normal daily life it's proving to be really hard to find time for warm up, work out and then cool down.   I know, priority, but which do I give up?   Work? (Love to!!! but can't yet), Sleep? time with family?  NOPE.   I'm going to switch up the every other day schedule and just go for 2 days a week for sure and try to slip one more in. I was scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I work from home on Fridays so that gives me back 4 hours.  I'm going to do Friday and Sunday, and again, try for one more day.

Sleep is averaging around 7:00 per night.   Been falling asleep in under 2 minutes. (that's normal, wife says I fall asleep faster than light.)   And sleeping through the night.  I don't use an alarm and wake naturally around 4:30 am.

Total liquid calories last week.  About 350.   Was on vacation last weekend and had a couple of really good beers over a great lobster dinner.

Total bread servings, 4.   That's down from 20-30 servings a week.  Honest. I was getting 1-2 servings with every meal, and with various Hostess products all day long.

Sweets.  1 time.  Again on vacation had a ice cream cone.   That is down from 2-3 times a day!!!   And heck, I got 19,000 steps the same day!

Total weight loss so far.  5.4 lbs.   That's a bit much for 10 days, but I know a couple of that is just from a reduction in the bulk of food consumed and the body catch up to less intake.

I've noticed a renewed sense of energy already.   On my walks I typically avoid going up and down curbs, and have to "plan" my stride to catch them correctly.  I've been "leaping" the curb the last few days, and have been seeking them out.

Merry Christmas all.

So it's the time for the two week check in.  It's been roughly 24 days since I started.

Still on an average of 10,000+ steps, but have dropped the body weight work outs for the time being.   As mentioned below, don't have the number of hours in the day to get them all in.

On the diet side.  0 liquid calories in the last 2 weeks.   Again, this is pretty easy as I didn't have a soda addiction anyway.   I've stopped drinking alcohol all together.

I have been doing pretty well with the Paleo diet.   Call it 90%.

Sleep is still staying good at ~7 hours per night.

Current weight. 218.8 lbs.   Down a total of 10.2 pounds.

Energy level way up.  I can actually stand on one foot and put socks and shoes on again.  About to need to buy new pants.  Have to wear belt now with the ones I have, as they won't stay up any more.

Well all, it's been more than my normal 2 week check in.    Been a bit busy.   And been an emotional couple of weeks.   My son departed for US Navy boot camp on Wednesday.   Sister-in-law passed away after a short battle with Cancer.

Through the holidays I've been trying to keep the walking up but haven't been anywhere near as successful as I'd like.

Food wise I've been staying on the Paleo about 80-90% of the time.

Progress.   Going to have to buy smaller belt soon.   The ones I have are on the first whole and still aren't tight.

Weight this morning was 215.7.   Down a total of 13.3lbs
