"His loss" implies that he would be better off with unicornassassin than with his current companion. It may be true, but we don't know anything about her, or about him. So this turn of events could even have saved unicornassassin from a crappy stagnation-inducing relationship for all we know.

Unicornassassin, good on you for asking, even though it didn't work out! Getting up the nerve to ask is so often the hardest part.

For what it's worth, I tend to be super-blunt, but not because I think guys are oblivious. It's actually mostly because I'm oblivious, and I don't want to go through all the hassle, heartache and wasted time of tiptoeing around trying to find out whether they're interested! Also because I'm poly, and being that blunt about it tends to weed out guys who would cause drama, in my experience.
