Fabrics and the Interiors

Besides paint, fabric is another method to introduce colors in a room. A variety of fabrics with innumerable new designs are available in the market. The choice depends on personal interests.

Greige is a fabric which is mistaken to be a color. It is an unfinished woven or knitted fabric that is not bleached or dyed. Upholstery, window treatments, clothes etc are the areas where this material is generally used.

Another type of fabric is the Hemp fabric which is made from the inner bark of the cannabis plant. It is known for its durability and hence is often used for making rope and twine and also for the upholstery. It is fairly soft when made into fabric.

Fiber made from flax fibers is called Linen. It is a good conductor of heat and is two or three times stronger than cotton. Hence it is popularly used in the summer. When it comes to interior designing, linen is used for window treatments and accessories. It has little elasticity and hence can wrinkle a lot. Due to this property linen is a good choice for upholstery while is seldom used for slip covers.

Jute is a fiber that is commonly used for carpets, drapes and upholstery as it is a very strong natural fiber. An added advantage is that it is biodegradable.

Cotton canvas fabric is a tightly woven fabric that is used for furniture upholstery. It is available in linen, hemp or cotton and is highly durable.
