Kithis
Hi everyone. I've been lurking around since the gizmodo post and finally getting around to using the forums.I'm 22 and graduated from University last year with a degree in Computer Science. I got pretty lazy at Uni and didn't do a whole lot of exercise. Now I've finally managed to get a job and moved out of my parents I've started doing a lot more. I've recently started learning Wing Chun Kung Fu and joined the local gym.I'm a bit on the scrawny side (5'2" and 98lbs) even for a girl. I'd like to bulk up a bit if I can but mostly I'm just trying to get fitter and practice my kung fu.My character sheet so far. I thought Monk would be a good choice for me to get good tips for training. Quote Link to comment

Alethea
Hiya!! Martial arts! That is neat. Your fitness will definitely be focused toward functional strength. Looking pretty is all well and good, but punching through boards is WAY cooler. Do you want to do weight strength training or focus on bodyweight movements? I've noticed a lot of martial artists prefer body weight. Quote "Let another say. 'Perhaps the worst will not happen.' You yourself must say. 'Well, what if it does happen? Let us see who wins!' Kithis
I've mostly been doing bodyweight when training. I'd be interested in learning how to use free weights and see if they are useful for me. Quote Link to comment

I'd be interested in learning how to use free weights and see if they are useful for me.I'm of the personal opinion that free weights are useful for EVERYBODY... but I'm Dutch/Russian. I think it's genetic. I also take offense to you calling yourself "scrawny"... *rawr* No down talk here! *shakes fist and grins* Everyone here has things they're working on and things they want to improve. The stuff you can do with just bodyweight is absolutely sick if you start looking into balance training and being "scrawny" is almost easier for some of it because you're not trying to control excess weight in weird positions. Welcome and .... well, welcome! =) Quote . ~*~ Some things make ripples... I prefer to make waves. ~*~ . Link to comment

Kithis
Hehe thanks guys. Do you know of any good guides I could use? I've found a few sites with helpful videos which I'm going to try out next time I go to the gym. Also do you have any tips for beginers? Always worried I'll drop the weights on my foot Quote Link to comment
realJWade
Steve's Rebel Fitness Guide is a good place to start for beginners, but there are plenty of other resources out there if you don't want to put down the money. Quote Link to comment
